My second visit to waldegraves this year, but this time in a tent and adults only. We were based on field one, lovely pitch with enough space to enjoy the outdoors and have a bar b q. We did not feel on top of our neighbours.
The booking facility was easy and a warm welcome. The site is centrally located to appreciate and enjoy Mersea. It was a carnival weekend so Mersea was busy. On site, toilets and showers which are dated and very basic. No curtains exist between the showers and changing area no more. But they did the job. Washing up facilities are under cover but it was luck of the draw for hot water. A shop on site was well stocked or if you fancy a trip into town then you have a co-op and tesco express. The swimming pool was nice and warm. Although minimal seating was available despite their new extended green area. We did not use the clubhouse, restaurant during this stay.
Security was good on site, wiith a security guard walking the site throughout the night, an aspect I had not realised previously.
Had a fantastic weekend away, very relaxed and enjoyable. Waldegraves is what it is, you can't flower it up, a basic site, where enjoyable times can be had, especially if you can get a good pitch. Very tempting for the future, but the best pitches do seem to be the non electric fields as you have plenty of space.

Just got back from spending a week here in our FC and had a great time. Facilities were OK, toilets, showers etc. Were fine and no problems. The swimming pool was great for the kids and was heated which was also good. We took our 3 dogs so we spent a lot of time walking around the site and it was clean and well maintained. The 11 o'clock noise curfew was mostly stuck to and the noise during the rest of the day was not bad at all. If you like your fishing, the fishing lakes were well stocked and they had some mighty big carp in them! EHU and water on each pitch was ok.

Great large site. Quite packed in but still a good size pitch. Club house small but busy and tries hard. Good food and choice in restaurant, shop covered all needs, take away van on site, pub has huge grassed area complete with modern playground. Pool was great for kids and beach was very peaceful. The usual teenagers loitering about at night but to be expected I guess. Toilets and showers always clean and site security active. Busy family site - but would go back.

This VERY large site has a lot to offer for families, its not a site for those that want peace and quiet! My children enjoyed the swimming pool and my partner took advantage of the fishing lakes which can become very busy.
We were disappointed with the shower and toilet facilities which were very dated! There always seemed to be staff about cleaning but this often was a very basic clean! On several occasions when my partner went to the toilet they were not flushing so there was still remnants of the previous persons visit! The shower block was closed from 10pm-5am everyday, apparently according to the sign this was due to mis-use and previous vandalism! This site obviously has a very good turn over by the amount of static, tents and tourers on site so a little money spent on these facilities would definitely of made our stay more enjoyable.
We did use the restaurant which was very clean, main meal prices ranged from £8-11 but good tasty portions. We also had breakfast here which again was very nice and reasonably priced. All staff were very pleasant and helpful.
Word of warning, check when high tide is because 'The Strood' Mersea Island's only road from the mainland can become cut of for a short period during this time because the water covers the road and cars can not cross. During our stay on one particular day it was the highest springtide at 3pm and the Island was cut of for 1 and half hours and this could of been a problem for those arriving and wanting to pitch up at 3pm which Waldegraves state on their website however they fail to mention 'high tides' and possible restricted access onto the Island during this time!
Also be aware on entry to site (after going through the small industrial estate) there is a rather large ramp! It is worse leaving the site due to its angle and we scraped the bottom of our car and caravan on it!
Overall this site has good and bad points but you make the most of your time there. There are things for the children to do, arcade, play area and swimming pool but as you can imagine these do get very busy during high season. The beach is accessed by a dusty track which when it has been raining it becomes very muddy, there were also lots of pot holes about which also filled with water. However once the sun came out these did seem to disappear.
I recommend you pick a booklet up from reception that Waldegraves have printed that lists many attraction you can visit and to help they have put on the post codes so all you have to do is type it into your satnav. We found this very helpful and had several days out visiting places we would never of known about.

Just returned from a 6 night stay and I must say it was a great trip. Location is great. We had fun walking the beaches and searching for shells with the kids.
As for facilities. Showers and toilets and washing up areas were well looked after and cleaned reglarly. Showers maybe a little cramped though. Found it a little dificult to shower the kids when needed. Maybe do with an upgrade but water was hot.
Was very busy in the field we were in but found that it was generally quiet after 10pm.
Pool was great. Heated and expectedly very busy. Kids loved it The lifeguards on duty did a good job keeping a handle on the mayhem. Playgrounds could do with a bit of updating for the kids but was otherwise good.
Didn't eat in the restaurant or take away so can't comment on them. Clubhouse did a great job of keeping the kids entertained the couple times we visited and the staff were great with the kids. The Wheatgrain shop was well stocked and the service was great.
Overall we had a great time and would gladly be back again. Great family site though probably not so much a place for people looking for a quiet break during the school holidays

We stayed in August for 4 nights out of a 14 night week break. Our kids (aged 3 and 6) LOVED it. We weren't quite as enthusiastic.
The kids liked: the bouncy castles (every Wednesday), the outdoor pool (warm), the people dressed in animal mascot outfits, the amusements, the entertainment, the other children they played with at the site.
What we didn't like: the lack of hot water in the washing up area and showers, the noisy evenings, music going on late into the evening and non-existent dog walking field (which looked like it had been turned into a field for tents).
After 4 nights we then moved on to a quieter place in Suffolk. I'm not sure we will be back, but we did have some happy memories there - and like I said, the kids really enjoyed it there. They said it was their favourite site of the holiday. It worked out fine for us as part of a touring holiday, but it's a shame the site hasn't sorted out some of the basics like HOT water and maintaining reasonable noise levels past 11pm.

Unfortunately, standards on this once lovely park have slipped! The facilities are dirty, with most of the toilet seats broken, and never any toilet roll. The park is cramped, and definitely overbooked. There is no space between tents, no where for the little ones to play by the tent. The facilities are unable to cope with the sheer amount of people booked in. Then there is the noise. Park rules state no noise after 11pm, however there are so many large groups having late night parties (1am onwards) that we got virtually no sleep. Park security takes ages to deal with it, yet when we needed to blow up a deflated bed at 11pm, they were there banging on our tent within ten minutes. There are still some good points. The restaurant and their staff are brilliant, and the food is amazing. The shop staff are lovely, bubbly and friendly, and the pool is nice, although a little too small for the amount of people crammed into the park. If you want loud parties, then go here, but if you want quiet then avoid at all costs. Next year, we're going down the road to Fen Farm.

Lovely park, very clean in all areas, outdoor swimming pool immaculate with excellent amount of life guards on duty, good facilities, washing up, showers, restaurant, take away on site, or information happily given to restaurants off site.
I would advise to book in advance as this park was at capacity and we could only get in for 2 nights midweek.
Large amount of space per pitch, however depending on your neighbours will determine how much sleep you get, although park cannot really do anything about this, I did see 1 security guard patrol on one evening around 10pm, however seemed to turn a blind eye to music being played.
Loud in evenings around tents as very close to one another noise wise, it appears spacious, however we had a very unsettled baby right behind us, and a large group of teenagers next to us playing 'it' around the tent until around 11pm.
Not the place to visit if you want an early night, however lively and loud if you are that way inclined and can sleep through most noise.
All in all a good park for the lively to stay.

Have stayed on this site numerous times, but this was the first time on the so called 'Hard standing'. If hard standing means pitched on clinker and gravel then ok. Pitch we were on was so far from the water pipe that the hose did not reach, and we do have an extended one, and the ground was extremely lumpy. Caravan also down a 5 foot ridge, so not good when it rains.
They are very proud of their history and there are many pictures in the Bar area of the site 50 years ago, and it seems they are so proud, they have kept the shower block as it was then, very poor, alhough the hot water was very hot, dangerously so I thought. (I am told the one nearer to the bar area has been improved).
Price at £30 a night, plus extra for awning (£4) extra for dogs (£2) plus anything else they can think of is also too high I feel.
Plus points, the restaurant / take away serves good food.
So my advice is do not go on these Hard standing but keep to the main fields.

This is my first of 2 visits to waldegraves this year
A very large lively site in a fantastic location on Mersea Island. However, this is the first time in a touring caravan to be pitched on their new hard standing area especially for caravans. All I can say is, don't ever book one of these pitches, awful. Hard standing is not the word I would use for these pitches. It is the area that is reknown to flood either when the toilets get blocked or in bad rainstorms. Thankfully we didn't experience any of that this time. The pitches are very poor standard and are based next to the fishing lakes so you have constant road traffic, of which do not adhere to the speed limits. The spacing is minimal so once you pitch your caravan and awning you have no space other than the road edging to sit outside let alone have a bar b q. If you are taking your caravan to waldegraves, make sure you get a grassy pitch elsewhere. The pitches are not hard standing as you would expect other than made up of large chunkie dusty stones, even make it uncomfortable to walk on. A few accidents from the kiddies with slipping on the gravel.
Beware as you travel along the lane to waldegraves, the ramps are not accommodating for caravans with one in particular resulting in scrapes of the underneath. Other than this one ramp, the site is easily accessible.
I like Waldegraves purely for its location and swimming pool for the kiddies, but tired it is, the amount of money that is being generated, it's about time money is invested into the site. Toilets and showers dated and at the swimming pool there is only one toilet with a broken handle and rat knawed door, that is constantly under water. You are also right on the beach for either mud walks on sand castles. To the right are the famous Mersea beach huts.
Yes rather negative but I do still return, Mersea is lovely.
