We spent 4 nights at Waldegraves over a very wet and chilly weekend! There were 2 adults and 3 teenagers in our party, we thought that Waldegraves would provide entertainment for the kids as there is a lot to do!

The staff were friendly, but very slow on booking in! They pointed us in the direction of our pitch, but when we got there, it was already occupied. We returned to the Reception area where they told us the people should be vacating soon, we had to wait - this wasn't the fault of Waldegraves, just an inconsiderate guest! However, we waited and waited and they didn't leave and the Staff didn't seem to know what to do. Some time later, we returned to the Reception where they allocated us another pitch, as they had allowed the people occupying our original pitch to stay on! Why they couldn't have done this in the first place, I don't know! But they didn't seem too bothered that we had waited for them to sort out this problem. Wasting our holiday time!

The pitches are rather close together, so you will have to get on with your neighbours and in the height of season in the Summer, I can imagine it being extremely crowded. The toilet and shower block are adequate, clean and warm. They're not the worst I have used, but not the best either!

The driving range was a hit with everyone, but it was far too wet to make use of the Golf course, so I can't pass comment on that. It was too cold to use the pool, although it would be very inviting on a hot summer's day! The boating lake was good fun with an inflatable dinghy. However, it could do with a good clean, there was quite a lot of black sludge around the edges, but this could have been down to the weather. We ate in the Granary one night and the food was very nice. The shop is very well stocked, selling foodstuff as well as camping essentials. The site has good access to the beach.

Would we stay again?. Probably not.

Just returned from a weekend visit with my two girls aged 13 and 4

Reception was quick and helpful, was given a map to my pitch, but that is when the problem started.

The park was half empty, so why did I end up next to god knows how many chavs? There must have been 15 of them.

So the Friday night was rather noisy.

Saturday was a different day, woke up, breakfast and took the kids down to the beach, tide was out, but the kids loved getting filthy looking for crabs and oysters.

Then once cleaned off took them up to the pool area, the weather was fantastic, one could almost thought they where in Spain.

Had lunch by the pool and more swimming.

By the time the afternoon came around back to the beach and had fun on the sandy beach.

Fortunately our neighbours had a hard day of drinking stella and we had a quiet night Saturday.

Previous comments said there was problems with the shower block and the electric supply, nowt wrong whilst I was there.

Great site, great location only criticism is some of the clientèle.

I still can't understand why most of the pitches was empty and those that where occupied where well spaced out, that I ended up next to this lot. Other than that I would return.

We booked a three night stay over the Easter weekend.

This is a large site with a lot of pitches.

The Toilets & Showers were very busy and were always a bit of a mess. I think this is mostly because of so many people needing to use them.

The biggest problem was the unreliable power supply. Each evening when the sun set the power tripped out. The staff did what they could to reset the main circuit breaker but it kept failing leaving the entire campsite (including statics) in the dark. We were lucky as we could still use our 12v lighting but most people were completely in the dark.

As a result we decided to cut the weekend short after only two nights. Reception was packed with angry campers but the unfortunate staff had been given no leeway by the owners to improve the situation.

Talking to another camper (an electrician) revealed that this same thing also happened last Easter.

The bottom line is I think the site has too few services (Showers / Toilets / Electricity) for the number of holidaymakers it wants to attract and should reduce the number of pitches available until it can upgrade.

On the plus side, the camp shop was large and well stocked and the weather was OK for the time of year.

I will not be returning.

Just came back from this site and was recommended to us, it was a big touring site and quite buzy as it was great weather.

Reception was friendly all good there.

The restaurant was lovely worth a visit.

Shop very handy good selection

Pitch and putt was good too, kids loved it. Although there was a warning they could not be held responsible if you got struck from the driving range next to it, just had to dodge a few flying balls, kids found this funny, but probably wouldn't have done if they had been hit by one. So could be better sectioned off.

Location to beach excellent

Pitch was small but ok nice and level.

Noise past 12 at night was bad and not enforced by the site, had a group of families close to us shouting and screaming at their kids all night and had music playing till 3am.

Dogs were generally kept on leads, but there was the odd few roaming and leaving their mess.

Toilets were ok, but had been trashed by other holiday makers, with loads of toilet roll down the loos and over the floor and outside on the floor and thrown about generally. And a few of the toilets were not working at all.

Overall the site was good, but maybe the people who kept the site in order, should have been stricter as the rules of this site are not kept to at all, which is a shame as others can easily spoil your visit here. I didn't see any wardens driving around the site keeping check the whole weekend?? shame.

Visited Waldegraves for the first time last weekend, and had a thoroughly enjoyable time.

Although not the cheapest site in the world (£20/night for electric and non-electric pitches) you do get a lot for your money.

This is a large site and we (my wife and two children) and where pitched by the fishing lakes with our own electric hook up and water tap. We went with friends and where situated right next to each other very close to the toilets and showers.

The facilities are a bit dated, but there are plenty of toilets/sinks and showers (which were situated in another block), and also plenty of hot water.

On site there is a superb restaurant (The Granary) in which we eat Friday night and for Sunday lunch - prices are very reasonable and the portions are huge. There are also two bars on site (The Wheatsheaf and The Barn) both were very good and again very reasonable with plenty of staff to serve.

We also used the outside swimming pool on Saturday afternoon which is heated - which is a good thing in the middle of September.

The site is right on the beach, and you can walk along the beach in to the small town of West Mersea which is about a 40 minute walk.

There is also a golf driving range and a 18 hole pitch and putt coarse on site, but we ran out of time so didn't get around to trying these, so maybe next time.

My only criticism is that our pitch had no grass and was just hard ground. It rained on the Saturday night and this quickly became a muddy swamp in the morning when we packed up and left. I assume that this is because it is the end of a long season and after repeated use this is what happens.

We have already booked to return next June, as all in all this is a very good site, with excellent facilities and plenty of things to do.

The site is not far from us and reading the online brochure, for a last weekend it seemed ideal.

The location is good with the water activities, shop, bar, pool and take away as described.

I did find the reception staff very curt without a please or thank you anywhere in sight.

Internet access is available at £7 a day or £4 an hour, at those prices we declined to connect.

The pitch had EHU and a tap, uneven sloping grass and was fairly tightly packed. Toilets were dated, rather smelly and a bit of a route march to get to. Fortunately I used my RADAR key which gave me a much cleaner, less used facility.

Well publicised site rules stated the dogs must be on a lead at all times and no music after 1100.

Dogs roaming free were a problem as was the loud Boom Boom music that continued into the small hours, The staff did nothing at all to enforce these rules which we found rather annoying.

It's a first for us to pay over £20 a night for just two adults and a £2 surcharge for a small dog, we had expected much better, hence this is certainly one site we will not be returning to.

Been to this site a lot over the last few years but mainly in summer.

Went last weekend in September (hottest weekend on record) and swimming pool was closed. We weren't the only family who came away disappointed.

Also advertised evening entertainment was Oliver the Musical. Got all dressed up only to find it was cancelled as they rented the clubhouse out to a 60th birthday party.

To sum it up a nice but noisy site in summer but not very good out of season

I really wanted to like this site as it's not far from home. I think my review may be based on the fact that we were in the non-electric field. No electric is fine as we only started using after 15 years of camping last year.

We paid £26. 00 per night. The field was flat and you could camp where you wanted. This is an extremely busy site and I am not sure I would call it peaceful. For non electric tents, you pitch where you want and they squeeze them in. Pitching was ok, normal tent pegs worked fine in the ground.

Good points

Nice bars, not too expensive. £6. 30 for pint of ale and 250cl glass of wine. Children loved the pool, very safe and clean. There is a playground outside the bar. Shop well stocked and not silly prices. Lots to do, pitch & putt, boot sale on Sunday morning.

There are lovely walks along the beach, turn right and you will find some really pleasant sandy bits, good for sandcastles.

Now for my bad points, some people do not keep their pets on leads, which is one of my biggest problems.

The toilets are a good 5 minute walk away from the non-electric field and there are only about 10 toilets and 10 showers in one central block. I have never been anywhere where they were so far. Equally, there are not enough of them. They were dated but clean. Queues for showers & toilets at certain parts of the day.

The entertainment was amateur and carried out by residents in the statics and barstaff. For the amount of money paid to park in this field, I expected much more.

If you don't like wasps then simply don't go, this was a wasp convention. I did ask if they sprayed very often and was told they only spray once a year at the beginning of Summer.

For non electric camping, this site is overpriced in my opinion. Maybe the other electric hook up pitches are much better.

We will not be going again.

The 5 of us went here last year and it was a really lovely trip.

The facilities were fine, the club house was perfectly cheesy, including the Abba tribute!

Overall, it was a lovely site, we only went on 1 day trip which is a lot less than we usually would, as we were occupied with the sea and the lake etc.

The only bit of warning I would give, is to pitch carefully if you are near the beach. It can get crazy windy on that field. We had to turn the tent so it didn't fill with air and fly away like an air balloon!

Also, watch out for the time of day you arrive, you might find the sea is blocking your path!

This was our second visit this year. We went here in April as we were new to camping and the reviews were good with lots to do with a 5 year old. On this visit the site was busier. It is a large site set over three fields. We had a pitch with electric hook up and water supply. I requested a pitch near a toilet block and they were very accommodating.

Staff in reception were polite and helpful. We were given our barrier pass to access the pitches, there is a £10 refundable deposit. Our pitch was marked on a map. There are a lot of information leaflets available in reception for things to do in the area.

The pitches are clearly marked well lit and divided by a hedge. The site is in a very tranquil area. Walking distance to the beach where you can walk for miles if you wish. If you turn right you come to beach huts and a place to jet ski by the next campsite. There are two visitors parking areas before you go through the barrier.

There are three toilet block areas, two with showers and the other has enclosed cubicles with a hand basin. The showers were hot any time of day. Never had to wait. The toilets and showers are separate blocks but there is a family room in the main block with both. There is a shelf for toiletries a seat to leave your clothes on or to sit when dressing or undressing. The blocks are cleaned and replenished with toilet rolls about every 3 hours.

The washing up area is under cover between the mens and ladies shower blocks. There are 6 sinks plenty of hot water but bring a plug or ask for one in the laundry.

Rubbish and elsan are here also can be a walk if you are at the other end of the site.

The shop is well stocked with the essentials. The take away hut is very popular and good value an asset on a late arrival. We did not use The Granery restaurant or bar so cannot comment.

The swimming pool is not large and very popular it was lovely and clean and warm, toddler pool also available. The lifeguards are very vigilant and make people stick to the rules. There are plenty of loungers around the pool and also on a grassy area if you want to sunbathe.

There are two play areas with equipment and a tennis court. The area between the pitches is large and perfect for ball games. You have good visability from your pitch so no concerns about the children playing and making friends. We took our bikes to ride to Mersey or to the conservation area about 10 minutes drive from the site. There are a couple of lovely pubs close by also.

Other facilities include Pitch and Putt area, Carp fishing lake, areas for kite flying and dog exercising areas. There is an arcade for entertainment on wet days.

This is a lovely site and will be going back there again.
