This is a very peaceful site with very good facilities, they are clean and warm. The caretakers are very happy to offer advice on where to visit and help with anything they can. There is a pub at the site offering food if you wish to eat out. Being on Exmoor the countryside is beautiful and such a variety of wildlife.

Following the directions given the site was easy to find and upon arrival we were shown to our pitch by the owner rather than wardens who had the day off. The pitch appeared to be spacious and with a little assessment reasonably flat with parking on a hard turning point. However as said in other reviews the tent field then sloped down quite a lot and was a little boggy at the bottom by the dog walk area. It seemed we had the best spot. The views were nothing short of spectacular and the only noise was bird song aside from the occasional farm vehicle on the lane behind the hedge behind our pitch. The facilities were clean and spacious and although only 2 showers I didn't have to wait at all. We paid for the on site wifi but that was a little intermittent and there was no mobile signal so beware if you need to be in touch with the outside world.
A slight problem when we arrived back from our first day out when we found a tent practically pitched on our laps presumably to avoid as much of the slope as possible. They didn't seem to have taken much notice of the pitch boundaries and no one had stopped them. As they were only staying for a couple of nights we decided not to make a fuss.
All in all we found this a lovely site but as we have found before with adult only camp sites as 'tenters' we seem to be given the raw deal on pitches.

The good parts of this site are great: free hot showers, clean toilet facilities, well maintained grounds, good dog walk on site & pub next door (mediocre food but ok if you can't be bothered to shop/cook).
However, once we saw the pitch we were bitterly disappointed. Some of the caravan pitches are sloping, despite looking ok on the website. The grass areas between some of the pitches are too small to erect an awning on it. It all just felt very cramped and a nightmare to get our twin axle anywhere near level. Shortly after arrival we said that we wanted to leave and asked for our money back, minus the £50 deposit. This was flatly refused and they wouldn't give a penny of our £308 back (for a 2 week stay). So, we were stuck there!
After a bit of hassle with the wardens (who were phoning the owners) we eventually moved onto the tent field the following day. This is also sloping, but less so than the caravan pitches. We managed to get level with the use of some big wooden blocks. Despite making it very clear how unhappy we were when we first arrived at the site, this solution was never offered to us. We had to stumble across the field when walking the dogs and then ask to move to it.
There are no shops nearby, the nearest are a good 15/20 min drive but there is a little shop on site which is well stocked.

Management response: The description on our website clearly states "all touring pitches are gravel hard standing surrounded by grass".
They were allocated our largest pitch which we reserve for twin axle caravans and there is ample space for caravan and awning on the hardstanding with a further 5 metres of grass space.
The picture on our own website and on ukcampsite.co.uk clearly show the pitch at the back of the site with a caravan and awning erected, this is an accurate representation.
The problem arose when the lady in question refused to put the awning on the hardstanding area, wanting instead to put it up on the grass, there would have been enough room for this (the people on the next pitch were her parents, so being close to them should not have presented a problem) but in addition they also wanted to erect a large fenced garden area for their dogs. Again there would have been space for this if they pitched the caravan and awning on the the hardstanding, the problem was she did not want to "step out onto the gravel". I am at a loss as to why they booked a site that clearly states gravel hardstanding pitches, when what they really wanted was a grass pitch.
Unfortunately, I was away that weekend but our wardens went out of their way to find a solution, but the lady was being "very difficult". If you read other reviews you will see they are very friendly and extremely helpful and no one has a bad word to say about them. The tent field was not originally offered as an alternative as it is generally not suitable for large caravans, because it slopes and if it gets too wet then there would be an issue getting the caravans off. However, when the lady asked if they could go in there the warden telephone me to ask if this would be ok. My reply was that if they were happy with this then they could go in there. I was told later in the day that they were on the pitch with awning and large garden and were "very happy". As far as I was concerned that was the end of the matter. |

Lovely small quiet site located behind the pub about 40 mins from M5 J25. We were on a hardstanding with a spacious grass area alongside, with electric, TV point & water point between 2 pitches. Wardens were friendly & helpful at all times. Site was immaculate, facilities block had 2 showers & 3 toilets which were clean and no queues even on a BH weekend, only small point, would have liked a mop to clean shower after use. Dog walk at bottom of camping field and no restriction on number of well-behaved dogs. Entrance to beer garden direct from site, very reasonable food prices. The local village is purely residential so not worth the walk along the busy B road, need a car to get anywhere. If you are there purely for walking then the only place close is Wimbleball Lake and the surrounding woods. Plenty of different tracks you can take and the entrance to the area is a 20 min walk from the site.

An excellent caravan park set in a beautiful location with great views and a lovely country pub right on the doorstep. The park is well maintained with spotlessly clean facilities. The wardens were pleasant friendly and approachable. Although I discovered whilst there that the wardens are leaving at the end of the season. They will be a hard act to follow the site is a credit to them.

We have just arrived home after a great week on this very well maintained campsite. Nothing was too much trouble for the warden, he helped with pushing the trailer into place and was always on hand with friendly advice. The small on site shop has everything you need. The facilities are immaculate, showers hot, microwave and full laundry facilities. As walkers there was no shortage of routes to take and plenty of information/maps in reception. Pub next door provides excellent and reasonable food. Exmoor is a lovely area with so much open space and wildlife. Would not hesitate to recommend this site.

This site has thought of everything and had everything that we like on a site. The shower blocks were clean and warm with free hot showers. The recycling was clear and concise. The dog walk was perfect for those early morning and just before bed visits. The whole site was immaculate with flowers everywhere and beautifully kept grass areas. There are TV aerial points to access and the site hires extra long lengths of coaxial cable for £2. 50 for the week. Lovely views, a lovely country pub literally yards from the site with its own gate into the pub garden. I think it serves food every evening apart from Mondays. We got to the site at lunchtime on Sunday, having started out on our journey there at 4. 30am, so we quickly set up the van then went straight to the pub for Sunday lunch and the pub allows dogs in the bar area, so, another bonus!
There is a beautiful walk about a mile or so away from site which overlooks Wimbleball Lake and has free parking and Exmoor ponies! A few miles further is Blue Anchor Bay which also has free parking and dogs are allowed on the beach all year round. Also at Blue Anchor is a little cafe called Driftwood which, again, allows dogs inside, although we sat at one of the outside tables and had beautiful fish and chips!
There are no downsides to this site at all. Oh, yes, actually there is one. It's just too far away to enjoy as often as we would like! When we go back to that part of the country, we will definitely go to Lowtrow Cross. Keep up the good work. You've nailed it!

WOW this is truly one of the bet sites that we have been on, we did not meet the owners but did meet the site wardens very friendly & helpful. The site is very well cared for & feels very relaxed, well stocked shop if the wardens are busy just serve yourself and pay into the honesty box [how often do you see that these days]. The local inn is also friendly serves great food & real ale/cider. There are good walks from the site, only a short drive to most places.

This is the only camp site I've been to. Booking was quick, easy and quick with a helpful on-site contact representative. Was able to amend booking info shortly before actually leaving for the site.
We were greeted by the campsite manager/owner as soon as we arrived, and were shown around the site - as well as given a tour of the amenities - in a friendly and concise manner. The on-site facilities were perfect, and the shop was well stocked.
The tent pitch was very spacious, the views rather incredible (faced the sunset), and the surrounding area beautiful.
The only downsides were the weather on our two nights (just so happened to be the two thunderstorms of the year) and a lack of local village to visit and peruse. However, these were not the fault of the site or the site owner, so in effect, the site itself and the service from its owner/helpers was perfect.
With regards to the child friendliness rating, we specifically did not want there to be children at the site, and there were none. So that's a moot rating, but it's still a 10!

As a small group of friends needing a base from which to access Wiveliscombe to tour the local breweries we weren't in need of more than the basics for our camping site; we got more than just the basics.
Lowtrow is a small, well maintained, adult only site. The facilities are modern enough with t. V points (for caravans) and wifi (signal does drop out frequently). There is the use of a chest freezer and microwave and the small reception/shop is stocked with all the necessaries. The washing up facilities and shower/toilet block were very clean and well stocked (although I would advise bringing your own toilet paper if you are accustomed to comfort). It is a great site if you are looking for peace and quiet in beautiful surroundings.
