A fabulous small campsite set in a beautiful location.
The site is so well organised, all facilities available microwave, washing, freezer to keep blocks cold, washing up area, all so spotlessly clean all day long. My only warning is there are only two showers which I imagine in high season could be a slight problem. However this really is a well run and looked after sight.
There is a great shop on sight and Sue has plenty of info available for the surrounding area. Also the pub (very handy, particularly on site) is a great traditional pub, myself and my friend had a fantastic meal there.
I had a thoroughly brilliant few days at Lowtrow Cross and will definitely be returning.

This campsite is one of the best I have stayed at in a long while. The shower block has been updated inside this year and kept extremely clean. The wardens on site were very helpful and very pleasant to talk to. The pictures on the website are not very recent and do not do it justice the site is far better than it looks. It is a great location for exploring Exmoor and the North Somerset/Devon coastline. All in All a fantastic little site.Keith C from Reading

One of the best sites we have visited. The pitches with EHU are flat, but the rest of the field does have a slight slope, but no-one I spoke to had a bad thing to say about the site. It is small and friendly, we were welcomed like family. The owners really couldn't be more helpful.
The facilities and surroundings are exactly as described by the owners. The only things to add to the previous reviews is that the toilets and showers have been updated and are excellent. I found there was sufficient room in the cubicle, each has its own light, a stool, pegs for clothes and duck board to stand on. The showers are still push botton, with plenty of hot water. There were nice little touches, like bottles of handwash at each handbasin, with a makeup mirror with its own light. The washing-up area even had washing up brushes, scourers and spray cleaner, needless to say all was kept spotlessly clean.
We had a marvellous time, there are some lovely walks, a little too hilly for me to cycle around the roads. But we went into Barnstaple and cycled the Tarka Trail to Bideford, stopping at Instone beach for lunch, it was a superb day out. The site is almost on Exmoor and within easy reach of many seaside resorts, Watchet and Lynmouth particularly are well worth a visit. The only complaint we have is that a week was not long enough to see all we wanted to. We will certainly be going again.

A beautiful location, especially if you love being in the middle of nowhere! A small campsite for both caravans and tents, but only room for 4 electrical hook ups in the camping field. The caretakers (Bob and Maria?) were very welcoming and warm. The shop is open 24 hours which is bliss but can run down in supplies a bit too long - a trust policy is in the unmanned shop. The shower block was ample (never had to queue) but the floor is lethal so take care.I slipped no less than 10 times. All in all though, I enjoyed my holiday.

Just come back from a weekend with friends at this site. It was very quiet and has clean & modern facilities with lots of hot water for the showers.
This site is perfect for caravan owners but be warned if you have a tent. The tents are put in the dog walking field which has roughly 6 level pitches and the rest are on a hill. We were advised by staff that the level pitches had new drainage underneath and as it had been raining all day we would be best on one of these. (Good advice, the hill was soaked through and no where near suitable for a tent). Here is the problem, in order to put the drainage in, the pitches have been battered and have hardly any grass. There is no topsoil, it is all on a bed of clay. So no grass + clay X rain = a clay mud bath in your tent ! The drainage does very little for the pitch as the rain just sits on top of the clay. The owners need to put down some new grass and not let anyone camp on it for at least one season.

I very much enjoyed my stay at Lowtrow Cross. The owner and assistant were very helpful.
Although the toilet/showers could do with a little updating, they were clean and spacious. The washing up facilities are well equipped and having a washing machine, tumble drier and microwave on site was a great help as the week I stayed was exceedingly wet.
The only downside for me was that the adjoining pub no longer allows dogs inside.

Lovely quiet small non-commercial site with a friendly welcome. Lots of hot water in (free) showers and hand basins, plenty of handwash and loo roll, facilities always clean and tidy. Showers were push button type and were a little on the small side, had 3 hanging hooks, and a moveable stool made sure belongings stayed dry. Washing up area under cover. Freezer and microwave very useful. Owner has thought of everything - lots of helpful personal touches. Lots of information for surrounding area and things to see, walkers' maps, maps of area, etc. There is a little shop on site stocked with a variety of items (with honesty box), which is useful because site is not in industrialised area. Dog walk was closely mown and so 'cleaning up' after dog was easy. £14.50 per pitch per night, in high season. Would return back - all in all a lovely site.

This site is well maintained, in a lovely location and has great facilities. The fact it's adults only is a bonus too.
The site offers hot showers (toilet/shower block kept very clean), freezer and microwave for free and also has hairdryer, iron, washing machine, tumble dryer for small charge.
The reception/shop is very well stocked with tourist information, maps for local walks which you can borrow and general local info. It also sells a large range of essentials - more than the cupboard that some reviews refer to - there are several shelves of food, drink, toiletries, etc. And a fridge / freezer packed with eggs, milk, OJ, and frozen meats, pies, ready meals, veggie food and bread.
The owner is very helpful and there always seems to be someone on site if you need them. We managed to turn up without any cash and couldn't find a machine anywhere nearby but it was no problem as they accept debit / credit cards.
The Inn by the entrance is very good but more for dining than drinking, we did manage to get a meal without booking but I think that's unusual and it was fairly late on Friday night. The food is great although quite expensive (£8-12 for main meal). I was impressed that they had 3 vegetarian main meals on the menu and another on the specials board. They had 3 real ales: Otter, Dartmoor and Exmoor's Fox when we visited.
The tent field is on a slight slope which was fine as there was only one other tent when we arrived but wouldn't fancy having to camp at the bottom if the site filled up and there was poor weather.
The only draw back was the lack of parking space - we came back after a day out to find none and had to park in the pub car park.
At £14 a night for a tent pitch, I thought this was a bit expensive but perhaps that's the going rate these days?
One additional tip: it's best to ring rather than use their online enquiry form - I waited a week to hear back by which time I'd phoned and booked anyway.

This is an adult only site. Great site clean and spacious, toilet block clean and tidy, showers may need an up grade pretty soon, great area for walks, just the right site for a peaceful break, little shop on site just sells the basics with a honesty box for anything that you buy, one down point is the dog walking area is in the tent field.

Quiet site with spacious pitches. Excellent onsite shop with honesty box, brilliant idea as the nearest shop is some miles away. Free use of freezer and microwave. Good laundry facilities. Clean toilet block but the showers need updating I felt. The local pub is practically on site. The food is great but its essential to book. The pub is open every lunch and evening except Monday and Tuesday lunch. Sat Nav essential to find your way around. No mobile coverage. Enjoyed our few days there and will probably return.
