This is a lovely, quiet, site looking down the valley and within easy reach of many/most of the main ‘attractions’ in the Forest of Dean.
Although some of the Forest roads are narrow, we had no problems accessing the site. Bev runs the site and sent detailed directions in advance on how best to approach from all points of the compass.
Level pitches (around 12 from memory) set into the hillside with gravel hardstanding. A separate loo each for male & female and one shower (20p for c. 5 minutes) may seem sparing but we never found a queue. All the facilities were spotlessly clean and the shower as hot as you wanted.
Several circular walks can be taken direct from the site and Bev (as well as being so very welcoming and helpful) is a font of knowledge on what there is to see and how to get there.
Two pubs in Sling (nearest village) although perhaps not the easiest of walks along the road as no footpaths but only 5 minutes in a car. Coleford (10 minutes by car) has supermarkets, petrol, local shops, a museum and is well worth a visit.
A very well-maintained site run with the environment in mind so re-cycling options and you’ll see a good percentage of British bird life just from your caravan window…. And free WiFi! We’d certainly visit again.

Loved this site! Bev was friendly, knowledgeable and helpful and clearly cares deeply about the site and every visitor.
The site is beautifully laid out, quiet apart from birdsong from the adjacent forest and the facilities were spotless (as an arachnophobe the lack of cobwebs and spiders was very much appreciated) The shower gives plenty of hot water for just 20p.
The wi-fi was excellent. No tv signal for us but we could have obtained a sat box from Bev if we had chosen to.
The Bream Heritage Walk was stunning, with the forest carpeted with Wild Garlic this time of year and several interesting landmarks along the way. My husband saw a huge stag in the forest on an early morning walk with our dog and it made his day.
Aside from the forest which can be entered from the site, there are a host of attractions within the Forest of Dean and beyond. We took a trip to the beach in Weston-Super-Mare one very hot day. The journey was an enjoyable 1hr 15 mins.
The Coffee Shop in Bream does fantastic coffee and cakes and is ideally placed as a stop on the Heritage Walk. Andy, the butcher, just up the road from the Coffee Shop is very helpful and the produce is second to none.
We bought items for the BBQ from him and it was the best.
We would definitely stay at Hawthorne Cottage Caravan Site again

There's nothing to dislike about this campsite bev and her husband go out of there way to make sure you have access and information for the forest of Dean which you can access from the site and the surrounding area.
They give you the information then leave you alone but make sure if you need anything just to ask. It's quiet, 10 hard standing plots on a tiered layout (we forgot our motor mover wheel wrench) bev helped us push it into place.
We were told that they have wild boar, 3 different types of deer, sheep etc but unfortunately we didn't see any. There is one male toilet and one female toilet and a unisex shower which runs for 5mins on 20p which is adequate for a 10 plot site.
We are really novices at map reading but gave us the confidence to give it a go and if all else failed they would come and rescue us by us phoning them🤣
The site is immaculate and well run. We did the China walk and we saw wild garlic in abundance and blue bells.
We have two small dogs who loved the walks. We were advised to go to the coffee shop in Bream were you get a 10% discount by mentioning hawthorn cottage lovely cake and a really good coffee.
Bev mentioned that she might have to put electric meters in because of the current situation and to be honest even with the meters this is a reasonable priced adult campsite and we need to save our CL sites a real gem.
We have already booked for next year.

Excellent site with fabulous and very helpful owner who can't do enough for you. Clearly thinking how she can make it as good as possible for those that visit with out spoiling it
Lots to do from the site walks and bike rides and reasonable shops and the like not too far away either,
Great break in March weather and managed to keep occupied with plenty left to do next time
In terms of value and customer service wish I could have scored more

Just had three nights at this great campsite.
We arrived in the dark and Bev, the owner, was so helpful and couldn't do enough for us, holding our dog while we managed to get onto the pitch and fill up with water.
The site is lovely and so quiet, near a forest and with lovely walks from the site.
The toilets are spotless all day long if a little dated.
We will definitely go back for longer at this great site.
It is always good to have a really lovely site owner that does everything to make your stay the best.

Lovely site, well laid out.
Owner very personable and excellent knowledge of the area.
Got great fish n chips from Bream, 4 mins away.
The only downside for me is paying £1 per dog per night (I have 2).

This was our first outing in our Motorhome and it didn’t disappoint.
We liked Hawthorne Cottage so much we stayed an extra night.
Bev was helpful both before and during our stay.
Site was quiet, facilities clean and the wildlife was good to watch.
Great walks through the forest too which the dogs and ourselves loved- walked to Parkend and ate at the Woodman which was excellent.
We look forward to visiting Hawthorne Cottage again

A very peaceful site set with easy access to Forest walks. We had a lovely welcome from Bev who we think is disguised as Super Women! She is always busy on site making sure everyone's needs are looked after.
Our pitch (8) was perfect with views over the valley. We did some very long walks exploring the Forest which our Springer loved.
Facilities are kept very clean and although only one shower on site (operated by 20p) it didn't appear to be a problem.
Bev is certainly the friendliness and most helpful host we have met in our two years of Motorhoming.
