What a lovely site. It is in a beautiful situation with direct access to the forest. Male and female toilets with one unisex shower which is 20p (which is plenty of time). They are situated in shed type buildings which have been upvc lined inside. They were OK with regard to warmth but it wasn't cold when we went. Not sure what it would be like when it gets really cold. They were lovely and clean, which to me is more important. The owners have really done a lot of work to this site. There is no TV reception at all but they have installed satelite dishes for you to use and you rent a digibox for a very small nominal fee. Most plots have a bird table.
There is a very nice pub in Sling which did excellent food, with offers on different days. It took us 20 minutes to walk there, but take your torch if you go at night. It was an easy walk but is all road way. There is also another pub which is in Bream but we didn't try that. There is a Spar in Bream and a general store in Sling. Takes about 30 to 40 minutes to walk to Bream which is up and down hill. Road quite dangerous with mad drivers who were overtaking on bends with us walking on the side of the road. !
I really loved this site and will certainly be returning.

This is a fantastic site and great value for money. We arrived but were unable to unhitch the caravan. The owner was very helpful. We tried most everything to unhitch then all of a sudden were successful. The problem turned out to be a broken friction stabiliser pad. After the drama we settled in and really enjoyed our few days of rest. The weather was brilliant so we were able to sit outside and listen to the birds. We walked in the forest with the dogs. All in al this is most definitely a site that we will revisit. It's beautiful ; peaceful and most likely the best site we have visited. We shall return later in the year.

What a gem, there are not a lot of sites in this area but this one is superb and great value for money. The site is on the edge of the forest so brilliant for walkers, cyclists and peace lovers. It is somewhat hilly in this area so not great if you like level surfaces!
The camp site only takes caravans and motorhomes, no tents and has x10 spacious plots, all level, with hard standing and grass and kept in great condition. Though on a hill it is terraced and so gives good views into the local valley, a sun trap but protected from winds. The toilet / shower block is sufficient but could do with a bit of a refit, but it is clean enough. The 20p shower is warm and efficient and gives a reasonable shower time (wash the hair first though or take another 20p if you like to linger) there is 1 water tap but a very long hose is available in the shed if you do not have a mobile container. The owner is always on hand, very laid back and very helpful.
Shops and pubs are available in most of the local towns but nothing is in walking distance. The Montague Arms pub is about a mile away, uphill but it does not look that inviting and appeared closed a lot of the time we were there, we were recommended the Miners arms in Sway but did not try it.
Phone signal is non existent, 95% of the time (02 and Vodafone). The owner has placed satellite dishes on each plot for those who must have TV; we prefer board games and cards, so did not need it and there is a Club WIFI service here that is superb and with great bandwidth. We used it for iplayer, etc and general internet on the odd occasion and no buffering even though the site was fully used, the signal was superb and reliable.
We thoroughly loved our week here and if we are in the area again we certainly would book this place, great value for money. Excellent!

This site is a little gem! It has 10 level pitches, all hard standing with EHU, and most of them have their own bird tables too! It's all very laid back, very welcoming and very reasonably priced. Dogs are made welcome too. There is one male and one female toilet and one shower [20p]. All clean and tidy. Despite being pitched quite close to the trees we had no problem with our roof mounted Sat dish. The site is a few minutes drive from Coleford where there are supermarkets, petrol stations etc, and is well positioned for exploring the Forest of Dean. We wouldn't hesitate to go there again.

Brilliant little site. I would come again. No bucket to clean shower between users, so appears shower could be cleaner. A dog does bark most days opposite the site, which does wake you up if you like a lie in. Apart from that a short walk to the woods, so if you have a dog would be lovely. Owner helpful but does not give impression is approachable, but OK. Just can give impression not the most friendliest. Always helpful when you get past this. I would recommend. Always difficult being frank but could give a warmer reception. Shower and toilet needs revamping, so would recommend using own shower.

What a wonderful find, we were visiting family in the area, and came upon this site. The owner was very helpful and supplied a Sat box for the TV reception, he even set it up for us !
Dog walks from the site were numerous, although a little wet when we were there, nothing a pair of wellies couldn't cope with though.
Toilets were clean and the shower looked clean and welcoming, although with just the one night stay we didn't try it out.
Will definitely visit again when the weather is a little kinder.

We chose this small site because a) we wanted to visit the area and b) for the walks directly from the site into the forest.
It's a small site with only 10 pitches (all of which have hook up). Pitches are also reasonably spread out and hedging and small trees help with this. We had pitch 9 (which being more elevated than pitches 4-8) gave us a bit of a view.
The grounds and grass were immaculately kept and mown, especially given the fact it is now Autumn. As others have mentioned there were also bird tables dotted around between some of the pitches. All pitches also had a gravelled hardstand - some were bigger than others. Unfortunately our awning didn't quite fit on the hardstand so we'd probably chose a different pitch next time if we can.
Facilities include 1 toilet for the men and 1 for the women and 1 (unisex) shower which works on 20p pieces. Mr E used the shower a couple of times and said the water was nice and hot but said it could do with a bit of 'sprucing up' but it was clean and there were hooks etc to put clothes.
Mobile signal isn't great and reception is a bit hit and miss (we're both on 3). Sometimes I could get a signal and talk but couldn't send a text message! Again, not a big issue for us as we were able to make calls/return calls when out and about.
A big bonus for us was the path directly outside of the site into the forest - perfect for our 2 dogs - one of which is a 6 month old puppy on his very first caravanning holiday! Both dogs loved to be able to run free and enjoy the forest.
We didn't visit many attractions as we had the dogs with us and we were also caravanning with my hubby's Auntie & Uncle who had joined us for the few days. We did manage to go to Cannop Ponds, Mallards Pike and Coleford - all within about a 15 min drive.
There was also no rush to vacate the pitch on our last day although I think the site owner might have thought we were staying an extra night! The weather was awful on our departure day and it absolutely poured for most of the morning so we wanted to dry our awning out as much as we could before taking it down. So, we didn't leave until very late afternoon - something I know we wouldn't be able to do when busier. We would have gone just after lunch had the weather been better and drier!
So, to sum up - a very small quiet site, in a good location with forest access and all at a great price too, unlike other larger sites in the area!
Would be return? Yes, we certainly would and we hope to return for a long weekend in Spring or Summer 2014.
Thank you Hawthorne Cottage for a lovely relaxing stay.

Lovely quiet site well maintained and clean. The hardstands are all of a good size and there is plenty of room between them. Owners are friendly and helpful. A very good site to chill out in after a hard day of cycling, swinging from ropes, walking or just sight seeing.
Just be aware-1) toilets and shower, clean and a bit better than basic= one male, one female, one shower(20p)- enough hot water
2) T. V. Reception - no digital reception need satalite decoder box, or you can get one from the owner for a small fee(£5. 00 a week)
3) Wi-Fi club £6. 00 for 48hrs, £12. 00 for a week
All in all a nice site, would go back again and all for £11. 00 with hook-up

We stopped here for 8 nights and it was absolutely brilliant. The owners are nice, the site is really well looked after, toilet and shower facilities are clean. There is access straight into the woods to take your dogs or just go walking. Plenty of bins and recycling. Excellent big flat hard standing pitches and only £10 per night. No barking dogs as previously mentioned in reviews we were told that they were gone. Lovely scenery round about with a good pub that does good food a few hundred yards from the site. We had a lovely peaceful stay and would definitely go back again

Just arrived home after staying at this fantastic site for two weeks. If you enjoy peace and quiet, plenty of walks either long or short strolls through the forest straight from the site this well could suit you.
Many small town with in a few miles of campsite so plenty to see and so.
One shower and one ladies and one gents toilet always very clean, but never had to wait.
Bird tables everywhere where you can put out your scraps and watch all sorts of birds squirrels feeding happily, amazing what they get through!
John and his wife were about all day, very helpful but never intrusive. Cant think of one negative comment if you like small rural sites give this one a try.
The pitch fees are only £10 per unit including hook-up.
Go on give it a try.
