We had my Mum with us for an Easter holiday so the tent was left at home and we booked a self catering chalet at the C&CC site at Winchcombe. Not cheap - £630 for the week but it would accommodate 4 adults - 1 double, 1 twin, 1 bathroom, 1 shower room, a large living room with a well equipped kitchen. There was also a patio/balcony overlooking a small lake but sadly it was too cold to sit outdoors.

Gas central heating, electric fire. TV & DVD and washer/drier included.

Everything was top quality and clean.

It was hard to fault the site except to caution that there are two lakes - great for the fisherman but you will need to keep a very close on smaller children. There was a small playground and indoor games room sensibly sited away from the water. Reception sold the basics and could direct you to the nearest shops - all a car drive away.

Winchcombe itself is a few miles away over the field footpaths or by car.

We spent the week visiting National Trust & English Herit properties. Fortunately the chalet included numerous guide books.

We didn't eat at any local pubs so can't comment on their quality.

There was a chip van on site Friday evening.

Just returned today from a two nights stay. The wardens are a total credit to this site. The site is in a really good location for walks in the area. It is certainly the best for dog friendly site facilities. Definitely a site to return to. The shower block was immaculate, although, the heating in November was not working yesterday! !

Just had four nights at Winchcombe, stopped for a short break on way back from a weekend in Stafford.

Easy to find site, straight off of a main road, you could hear a bit of noise from the odd truck at night, but didn't bother us.

Welcome was very friendly and site was in immaculate condition.

Small games room for the kids with a pool table and skittles, there was also a small playground area with swings and a football goal.

Toilets as expected for a ccc site, were spotless, next to them was a washing up area and next to that an enclosed elsan point.

Unusually for a ccc site where you normally have a dog walk, but with dogs on leads signs, there was a large field at the rear of the site where you could let the dogs off.

We walked the footpath across the road to the Gardeners Arms, about 20 easy minutes walk, and sat in the snug room with the dogs for a drink and sandwich, reasonable price and nice pub.

We also took the walk to the Royal Oak to watch the steam train pass, again an easy walk of about 40 minutes.

A map of the area with footpaths etc was available in the small site shop for £3.

We didn't have kids with us, but the ones we saw seemed to be having a good time, they are even allowed to ride there bikes around the site, I have marked the child friendliness down slightly as the lake had open access with no gates.

Fishing was £7 a day or £26 a week I was told.

Perfect welcome excellent staff very helpful in all aspects.

Spotless site, pitches flat and clean and great size.

Lots of hot water at pot wash

Facilities clean and tidy

Beautiful peaceful area loved Tewkesbury.

Plenty of supermarkets nearby.

Slight disappointments :

No lakeside pitches big enough for our Bailey twin axle van pitches plenty big enough ?????

Play area and games room only suitable for under 10 s

No late check out even if paid extra and site half empty ?

Recreational pond fishing for amateurs only not really a lake

I've stayed at several Camping & Caravanning Club sites in recent months and been impressed by the consistently high standards of operation and maintenance. Club sites have a reputation for being well-run and well-kept and Winchcombe is no exception. In April 2015 I stayed a night there and was not disappointed.

The camping pitches are centred around an attractive tree-lined fishing lake. The location is in pleasant farmland surrounded by rolling wooded hills. The site is roughly six miles east of the M5 Junction 9 at Tewkesbury and about three miles from the small town of Winchcombe.

The site is beside the A4077, a busy road linking Tewkesbury to Stow-on-the-Wold. This road means easy access but it also means quite a bit of traffic noise.

The GWR steam railway is two miles away at Toddington station and is a fully operational heritage line with steam trains most weekends.

Upon arrival (and throughout my stay) I found the wardens were very friendly and helpful - top marks. I found the facilities were kept spotlessly clean with everything replenished regularly and plenty of hot water.

There weren't many tents on the campsite during my stay - most visitors were in touring caravans and motorhomes. Electric hook-up (EHU) is available on most of the pitches. Surfaced tracks link the pitching areas and you can park the car beside your tent. There are plenty of hardstandings for caravans and motorhomes.

Dogs are welcome and there are good dog walks right next to the site. Trees provide shelter from the wind, the soil takes tent pegs easily, and the short grass is in good condition.

In conclusion, this campsite is handy for the M5 and the Cotswolds. It is very well-run and maintained with friendly helpful staff. My only gripe was the traffic noise.

Made a stopover here en route from London to Wales, and we were happy to have done so. Friendly staff, good showers, nice dishwashing area, pleasant site which is well laid out around a small lake and well kept level motorhome pitches. There are nice walks you can do by footpath to nearby villages and hills, we did an afternoon walk and saw a herd of roe deer in a wood as well as several pheasants and buzzards. The road going past the site is busy although the noise didn't impinge on the site as far as we experienced, but it is unpleasant to walk any distance along. Convenient for M5 junction a couple of miles away.

Spent 3 nights at this lovely little site. Central to the site is a fishing lake with resident ducks and the site is based around it overlooking the Cotswold farmland. I must say the wardens were the most friendly, helpful bunch I've come across from Sue over the phone who found us a 3rd night after a cancellation came in but had to do her computer wizardry first then phoned back to confirm as we were stuck over 2 hours away with no access to the internet, to Ian who booked us in, walked us around and was always cheery whatever time of day, and the other Sue with her map knowhow. Lovely walk through arable farmland to the Royal Oak pub overlooking the steamtrain line and a walk to Sudeley castle via charming Wimchcombe is a round 10 mile, but mainly level and great for the dogs, icing on the cake is the site has a 10 acre enclosed field for exercising the dogs. Showerblock is modern & clean, as were all the facilities, we will definitely revisit, a true testament to 'The Friendly Club'

This is a lovely little site, in a beautiful location. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly.

Hard standing pitches are flat and most have a view over the lake or surrounding fields.

The toilet/shower bloke was spotlessly clean and had constant hot water. There is a games room with table football, table tennis, a skittles court and tv.

We visited the GWR historic railway station at Toddington and went on a steam train to Cheltenham race course. Broadway town is nearby with antique shops and places to eat.

I recommend The Gardeners Arms in Alderton for a meal, the steak, ale and stilton pie was yummylicious.

Tewkesbury is worth a visit for a walk along the river and there is a Wetherspoons for food at reasonable prices.

Just returned from our second weekend at this site. Once again, we thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful campsite with far reaching views across the Cotswold landscape. Facilities are excellent and the staff helpful. Can recommend a visit to Stanton and Broadway which are very Christmassy at this time of year. Gardeners Arms in Alderton serves excellent food with a discount to campers staying on the campsite. Looking forward to returning.

This is a great campsite, as good as any we’ve ever stayed at. It’s not too big, and has a friendly intimate feel to it. Some reviews have mentioned the high price, but I think it’s reasonable, and comparable with other club sites – none are particularly cheap any more.

It’s very easy to get to – good access from the M5 and no narrow lanes to get down, it’s straight off a main road. There is a bit of traffic noise early in the morning and a bit in the evenings, and only then if there’s a particularly noisy vehicle going down the road, but nothing to be concerned about. It’s completely silent at night.

The area is lovely, possibly one of the best areas to explore in England. The local villages and towns are all worth a visit. The Gardeners Arms is a 3 minute drive away, gives 20% discount for anyone staying at this site, and provides huge meals at a reasonable price. The Hobnail, only a minute further is good too, daily carvery.

The staff at the site are friendly and helpful. The shop is tiny but the essentials are there – tea, milk etc.

The pitches are a good size and fairly level, but you’ll need levelling blocks/ramps if you want to be dead level. The hard standings are hard as hell. You’ll need good strong rock pegs and a decent hammer. The old ‘skewer’ style pegs have got no chance.

The shower block is excellent, very clean, water piping hot, everything replenished daily so there’s no running out of soap, toilet roll etc. Gets a bit too busy at 8am, but don’t they all at that time? Go early and have the place to yourself.

The lake is beautiful, and full of fish. The carp had gone quiet when I was there (end of October), but the roach and rudd were very active.

Apparently the TV signal is pretty hopeless, not a concern to us as we don’t telly on hols, but no doubt an issue for some.

We’ll be going there again.
