I love camping, and have camped in all sorts of pitches. Looked for somewhere that was good to go with 2 small boys (my grandsons). Camped with friends and children (and their dogs), and chose to pitch our tents at the far end of the field near the forest to escape other campers as much as possible. However, that just meant there was constant people traffic past us. We were surrounded by other campers children as soon as we arrived, and felt like an attempt was made for us to become some sort of child minding service, we even got asked to make sure a little girl didn't climb over a fence. Needless to say we refused to take such responsibility. We also ended up with some loud ignorant people pitching opposite us, who stayed up chatting til about 3pm (with woman with a laugh that made you want to get up and shout at her). Rough Hey looked ok online, but I was very disappointed at the state of the field when arrived. Not how we thought it would be at all. Not very big, and weirdly, being surrounded by trees gave it an almost claustraphobic feeling. But then when we arrived it was packed out with only about 25 tents, and just got more packed as the numbers grew. The field was reasonably ok when we arrived, but became very muddy after a bit of rain. Cars not allowed on field (they'd get stuck), so trekking across it in the mud to the car park with all our kit when we were packing up was hard work. The boys loved the forest, but we couldn't get directly to the river (though the website leads you to believe you can). We found a way by walking through the Cricket Club, and found a beautiful spot there, but really wanted this kind of spot on site. Anyway, John's 'cafe' tent came in handy to get the boys a hot chocolate while I put the tent up. There were 2 female toilets, but only 1 I would use as the other was dismal. Didn't use the showers but they looked ok, except for the kids playing in them. I believe that any experience is what you make it, and thankfully our group pulled together and still managed to have a good time.

Just had two wonderful days here. Not been camping in years but definitely planning on going back here. Showers fantastic and toilets good as was washing room for pots etc. Warden and his wife are lovely people and always there if you need anything. Logs sold on site which is great. Free fire pits available which is a good touch indeed. If I was to pick fault the only thing I could think of is the timer for the lights in the toilet could do with an extra couple of minutes but that's the only thing I could think of. Thanks for a great couple of days.

Stayed at this campsite for one night, but would have gladly stayed longer. Loved the fact that we were only 20 minutes away from home, but could have been anywhere in the country, with lovely surroundings. You are allowed to have campfires, and the site supply an old washer drum and breeze blocks, and you can buy a sack of wood from the site owners. Showers and toilets were simple and functional. There was a food tent selling bacon butties and burgers. Site owners lovely and friendly. Didnt explore the surrounding area last time. But hope to return in the next couple of weeks to explore. £10 per tent per night and £1 per person. Cant wait to return.

We went to this site mainly to try out new tent out before our weeks trip to North Yorks in July.
Site itself is quite nice. Toilet facilities are basic but fit for purpose.
You don't need to book here, just turn up pitch your tent and the owners come round to collect the fee. They seemed nice enough, as did the wardens who live in a van on site.
The stay was spoilt by people allowing their dogs to run free and toileting where they wished, safety rules such as the 3m pitching space not being enforced and the site not really being for proper campers. There was an influx the following morning of people looking for a cheap night away, drinking beer at breakfast and tattooing one another in the porch of their tents.
My husband and I intended on staying for 2 night. The first night was good. Just general noise but we left the following lunchtime after returning to our tent to have 3x8 man tents pitched so close we could no longer use the side door of our tent.
Shame that the sunny weather seemed to attract all the idiots.

We had a short stay here over the weekend of 17th - 19th August as everywhere we usually stay was booked up.
It's a Basic site that has a shower block (which we didn't use, so I can't comment on them) and toilet block. The toilet block (mens and women's) were very basic, no hot water, no toilet roll in the toilets.
One good thing is that there is a tap with drinking water available. Another thing we had a problem with is that we couldn't park the car next to the tent.
On a good note the price was excellent, £10 per tent per night. Everyone is also allowed to have a fire along as its off the ground. Bins are also provided so you can have the fires without needing to bring your own equipment.
There is also a Forest at the other end of the field where you are able to collect your own wood for the fire. Or you can buy the wood from a van on the site.
Overall I would give this site 7 out of 10 and I would visit again. If you go don't expect the ritz but it's definitely value for money.

Well afer having a really challenging week in the rat race we ended up at rough hey wood pitching a tent for our daughter & friends & won a night in the tipees - absoloutely awesome night - all mod cons with heating ( yes still needed in July) & cooking facilities,
The wardens were ace really friendly & informative. In fact my husband is now looking for a warden post!
My daughter has camped at rough hey wood many times & I now understand why. 13 miles from bradford & away from it all.

We have just returned from an overnight stay with our three children and dog and enjoyed the evening sat round our camp fire and noise level wasn't bad apart from one group opposite us which the warden did tell to keep it down.
The site itself is nice but the facilities let it down they are the worst I have ever seen and because of this won't be returning. There was two ladies toilets and two gents which were full of cobwebs and spiders, they weren't very clean overall dingy the shower block has two sinks in two rooms both which are poor to say the least, the showers were filthy also wouldn't use them

Stayed here a few times with my girlfriend.
Found the campsite very good. You can have a campfire here, the owners provide free washing machine drums and the firewood can be taken from the local woods. They also sell logs at the camp site.
Nice surroundings, surrounded by woodlands and a river. There's toilet blocks.
If you're expecting silence by 10pm maybe this isn't the place for you but if you're easy going like myself you'll be fine. The owners are very friendly. Will keep coming back here.

Had a lovely sunny weekend at Rough Hey. Loved the unspoilt feel of the camp site, everyone doing their own thing, the friendly camp warden walks around at night just to remind campers that all music has to be turned off at 11-30 which is acceptable, but you can still remain around your camp fire for however long you wish.
Shower block could do with a bit more cleaning through out the duration of ones stay, and toilets very basic but we are in the middle of the woods! Visited the picturesque Hebden Bridge.
The only big drawback to this site is a very long walk with your heavy tent, clothes, food, cooking equipment, chairs, table etc. We did think that access should have been allowed for off loading & reloading purposes only! Not all people are as able bodied as others.

Hi all, we came for a 3 night break as first timer's in our Zrnobia 6, 2 adults, 9 yearold, 11 month old n the dog. Found the sit very quiet and friendly, Wardens and owners the same.
However we only stayed one night as it became extremely cold in the night to the point we all had to huddle in one bedroom together (nose freezing and could see own breath), probably due to the location (right at the bottom of the Calderdale Valley).
Not much for our daughter to do, we went for a little walk round Sowerby Bridge taking in the locks on the canal. Had a very lovely afternoon but had to get there by car as it is over 2 miles from the site.
Other than that if your looking for a quiet break with serene little walks then go ahead and book, but if you look for more then I wouldn't recommend it.
