Just spent 2 nights, Thursday & Friday at Rough Hey, you don't book, just turn up. Having read some reviews we thought, its the first time camping without our kids, we'll give it a go at a £10 a night. The site is very basic which we like plus we like to have a fire. The warden lives in a teepee on the site with his family which is just as well because on the Friday night it got really busy & loads of teenagers pitched up and were spraying aerosols onto their fire and burning their clothes then eventually their tent which was quite scary when there are children around and no rule on how far apart to pitch each tent. Dont let this put you off though most people are responsible campers and the warden sorted them out then off next morning.
It is a lovely relaxing place with lots of walks, a tesco & little town (Sowerby) nearby a co-op the other way. Just a couple of things to bear in mind though the facilities are very basic, no hot water on the wash basins, no loo roll so take your own they seemed cleanish but I never saw anyone clean them whilst we were there. You have to park then cart your stuff up the field & its quite a long way if you don't get a pitch near the front. But it is a tenner a night no matter how many you have in your tent so make your own mind up. The location of the site is a bit tricky to get to very narrow bridge & sharp bend so you might struggle with a trailer which we would of had if we'd had the kids & the big tent with us.

We have just returned from this site, it is very basic which is what we wanted! the wardens are great, everyone on the site was very nice,
The children loved being able to kick the ball around in the day and sit toasting marshmallows on the fire at night!
All the children on the site seemed to be settled down for 9. 30pm and after then the adults sat around the fires!
Its a great back to basics site and we are returning next weekend!
My kids are 7 and 4 and were not board at any time.
The toilets, washing up area and showers were clean. We had a fantastic time.

I came to this site in june 2011 with a friend and must admit it is in an amazing setting, woods, trees, river. It is managed and run really well and the staff are really friendly and happy to help.
It was great to camp somewhere safe and be allowed to have a fire to sit out by in the evenings, the old washing machine drums are a brilliant idea and serve the purpose very well.
I really loved my few days at this site and I am planning to return for another lovely stay within the next few weeks.
I would highly recommend it.

Right, first things first. We have a large Kalahari 10 tent, a dog, small baby (1 year old) and a 7 year old boy.
This is a brilliant campsite. If you want to sit in complete luxury, with children silently playing board games and not having any fun, get a caravan! If you want a great family experience go here!
The wardens are superb, striking a perfect balance of giving people freedom to have fun, but making everyone keep the noise right down at a very fair time of 11:30 on weekends (10 weekdays). For us this was perfect. Also they sell eggs and a generous amount of firewood and will offer help and advice if you ask for it.
The surrounding Forest is beautiful and does a superb job of sheltering the campsite as well as providing plenty if dead wood for the campfires. The local town is easy to access with lots of shops and sights including a large and convenient Tesco's.
All in all if your reading this it means your considering it. STOP READING. Get your tent packed, your wellies on and get over there. Besides which, it's £10 a night, what more do you want.
Oh and if you see a couple with 2 kids and an old English sheepdog in a big blue tent, come and say hello!

Just back from an enjoyable weekend at Rough Hey wood, although it got very wet and muddy the site was everything we expected, with the added bonus of a camp fire to sit around all night, as I have read in other reviews the toilets are not gleaming five star with gold fittings but hey we are camping aren't we. Our group had three tents in all, two 9 berth family tents and a small dome tent, plus gazebo and large wind break and we were allowed as much space as we wanted really which with 13 of us plus a dog made for a nice camp. Noise was not a problem at night for us, as some reviews state although partying did go on until the early hours, , I think it is part of this site. It has a festival feel to it and a charm unlike most other sites. The owners and wardens are friendly and helpful, I thought towing peoples trailers off the field was a nice touch

What a gem of a camp site, really pleased we gave this site a try, Firstly the wardens are really helpful & pleasant. The site has a great feel to it families & groups of friends all having fun.
Open fires are allowed if raised off the ground, we took our fire pit but washer drums are supplied. The cost is £10 per night per tent which is good value. Yes the toilets & showers are basic but you are camping so it's all part of the experience if you want 5* then book a hotel! As for footballs etc; the kids are camping and whilst I agree they shouldn't be hitting your tent every 2 minutes, have these people who write these type of reviews never been children or had any fun? also there is nothing like sat round a camp fire on a night having a few beers and a laugh with your friends and if you can't do it here where can you do it. Admittedly I have experienced the type of Chav's that have no consideration for anyone other than themselves at some campsites I have visited, but the owners/wardens cannot let them spoil it for everyone by putting in place strict rules like lights out at 10:30 and everyone tucked up in bed that would take the charm & fun out of this site for all those who just want relaxing fun time after all isn't that what it's all about?
The only negative I have is dog's being allowed to roam on the field and owners not clearing up after their animals, I myself love dogs although my 6 year old son is not so keen and so I don't think dogs should be allowed to roam free as some types like to jump up on small children. Also wiping the mess off his shoes is not very nice. Give this site a try, unless you are grumpy & can't stand anyone having fun then you will absolutely love it and keep going back time after time!

This is a very basic site and not quiet. Facilities are basic toilets and showers.
Good Points: you can have open fires, surrounded by trees and beautiful walks in countryside. Cheap at £12.50 per night.
Bad Points: very noisy, dogs were allowed to wander around and left deposits, they also cocked their legs on our tent. Despite rules of no football kids allowed to play this and cant count the amount of times they hit our tent or ended up tangled in our guy lines.
These points are not the fault of the wardens as such more the inconsiderate campers that were there at the time. But I feel rules are no use if not enforced. Would not go again as not our cup of tea, prefer to pay more for better facilities and a quieter.

Camped as a family of four with a view to having a peaceful weekend away with the kids, but ended up leaving early (weather was wonderful!) due to noise and lack of facilities. The field was level but very rough in parts.
The woodland walk was lovely but spoilt by beer cans and rubbish left by other campers. The main reason for the noise was being able to have camp fires which encourages later nights/drinking and also as we noticed on several occasions people sabotaging healthy trees for firewood as all the fallen twigs and logs are long gone.
By no means are we new to basic camp sites and have been to many, but have never felt compelled to leave such a review.

Myself and my family have just spent the weekend at Rough Hey Wood and had a fantastic time, its back to basics here but that is just what we wanted! the on site wardens were extremely helpful and very friendly, it was out of season when we arrived but they made us welcome all the same and we had the whole site to ourselves, some of the facilities were not yet on but the site wasn't officially open yet so it wasn't a problem.
When we decided to go camping for the weekend we wanted somewhere that allowed campfires and they a few and far between but Rough Hey catered for us and the old washing machine drums were a great touch! more campsites should take a leaf out of RoughHeys book were this is concerned! we will definitely be revisiting!
Toilet block is very basic but lets face it you don't go camping expecting 5 star luxury facilities and if you do well you shouldn't be camping!
Near by sowerby bridge has everything you need for your trip and there are several places to eat out if you fancy a break from the camp stove, I would recommend The Roxy Venue cheap beer and very satisfactory food!.
Give this site a go you will love it if you love the back to nature aspect of camping!

Just got back from a few cold days. Sie was technically closed but they let us camp anyway! Enjoyed having the site to ourselves and nice to have a bit of snow. Wardens were very welcoming and helpful.
Lovely walks through the surrounding woodlands and enjoyed a few pints at the Bridge Inn at Ripponden. Got down below -10 and everything froze! my boy was most impressed with the frozen toilet!
Nice to be able to have a camp fire and have a hassle free time.
