I chose Rough Hey for my girlfriend's surprise birthday weekend camping. What a fine venue.

The site was very busy but there was plenty of space for tents.

Lots of groups were celebrating and the site had a great atmosphere added to by camp fires and the buzz of folk enjoying themselves.

Wood was available on site at £4 but I was alarmed to see campers going off into the woods armed with saws and returning with green wood hacked off the trees; no good for burning and certainly not sustainable. Please bring your own rather than depleting the wood.

We did find dog sh*t on the site but got rid of it. Problem solved.

We had a great time on Friday and Saturday nights but on Sunday morning I wish our neighbours had the decency not to have left all of their rubbish for the proprietors to clean up. It's the least they could have done.

It's a cracking site and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes their camping on the basic side. Don't bring your maiden aunt unless she likes a drink, a fire and partying that can go on a bit late.

Having just returned from a weekend visit, we are already planning a return trip! We arrived at around tea time on Friday,(just as the heavens opened!) but soon had our tent up, and secured one of the fantastic drums for our fire! It started to fill up at a rapid pace, with the majority being families. Very friendly atmosphere, quite a community feel, what we forgot was easily borrowed from neighbours who were more than happy to oblige! The woods are great, had fun climbing up banks to gather wood for our fire! Toilets were clean, showers could do with curtains and somewhere to hang your clothes but were clean and hot! Owners lovely, helpful and chatty! Site was ideal, cars were kept in the carpark which may have been a pain when lugging gear to set up but in terms of safety for the kids is perfect, they could play freely without worrying about traffic! They did open the gates on sunday morning for ease for packing up which again was helpful! Highly recommend this site just remember your toilet roll! And something to chop up your windfall wood with!I took my 9 year old and two year old, and our dog, we had a ball and will be returning with more family very soon!

We stayed here in May but not during the bank holiday weekend. We arrived mid afternoon and although the site consisted of just one field we were very happy with the place as the tents were adequately spaced.

However, by early evening more and more large parties were arriving and the place was getting crowded. When the owners came to collect the money they were very pleasant and assured us that they would not be allowing any more tents on site. In the next two hours at least 6 more large tents were squeezed into the site which was now heaving with people. Children were tearing around the place, screaming and shouting amidst the smog of dozens of campfires.

We decided to settle ourselves down for the night at around 10.30 and although the noise from the many parties was still loud we felt reassured that the owners would not let it go on too late since she had herself quoted 'We can hear everything from the house as the field is like an amphitheatre so we will soon make sure people quieten down if it is still noisy after 11.00' The noise of adults shouting and swearing and kids shrieking and screaming continued until 1.30 by which time my husband had had enough. He politely asked several parties if they could keep their voices down, His request blatantly ignored as the horrific noise went on and on until 4.00 am. By now our two children were both frightened and over tired.

Yes it was only £10 per night, yes campfires are allowed but I would rather pay more and do without a campfire than spend a sleepless night listening to too many very loud people crammed into one field.

We stayed at this site for the first time last week and despite some rain, we had a great time. There is a fantastic cafe in nearby Ripponden that we would highly recommend.

Great to be able to have a camp fire, and plentiful wood available to feed it if you are prepared to stray off the track in the woods. Very friendly owners, who manufacture false teeth as well as running the site!

The kids loved the woods, which also provided good shelter from the rain, and this enabled my wife & I to have a very relaxing couple of days. We will most definitely be returning to this one, which is an absolute little gem.

Wow! Remote site that allows camp fires. Fire Bins provided and dead wood is freely available.

Toilet facilities and showers are adequate.

Great people camping, one couple freely gave us wood and Firelighters to get us started and helped us put our tent up! The woodland walks are amazing with Wild Garlic, and Bluebells everywhere! There is even a Tarzen swing if you look! We'll be back soon. Fab.

I have been to this campsite on numerous occasions throughout the year. All have been great but I must stress if the weather is bad bring your wellies.

Fantastic camping.Ground flat, camp fire what else do ya need.

Toilets ok, new showers ok, site owners fantastic.Make sure you have a beer ready for Sue! lol

There is a Tesco in Sowerby bridge for all the 'essentials' you forget. And they even deliver pizza etc if needed. Just speak to sue.

Fantastic walks through the woods to the village & a fantastic little waterfall. Oh & an opportunity for the kids to collect their own fire wood!

Overall a quaint little campsite that offers friendship, real camping & fun!

We spent two nights on this site last summer.

The site was crowded, noisy, disorganised.

The facilities were just adequate, not very clean.

There was no obvious 'system' in place for siting vans / tents etc. We ended up parking in what appeared to be the car park, and which housed several vehicles which almost seemed to be permanent fixtures ('locals' camping out?!)

The wardens were only present for brief periods to collect the fee. They apologised for a noisy 'party' the first night (which went on in the main field until the early hours).

The owners described this as a 'one off'.

The campsite is basic but clean, the facilities are again basic but ok. We stayed with two children who loved the location as it is next to the old railway track and is a footpath with great walks around the area. The one problem we found was there was no toilet roll in the toilets. Unfortunately the site was a swamp as all the rain we have had made it muddy, the owners did pre warn us though and were honest.

They provide campfire units which are old washer drums and are fantastic, lovely to see fires allowed.

The down side was there were a people who spoilt our trip who were up and shouting until 4am, on our departure we complained and the owners were sorry and said we should of phoned them and they would have sorted the problem out! was too late for us our trip had been spoilt. If you encounter this problem phone the owners, they are very nice and helpful

Well what can I say about this site apart from we loved it. We got there and yes it was muddy but what can you expect when it had been raining for days, even whilst we was putting our tent up it was raining. We finally got sorted and set our own camp fire going. The owner came round just after tea time and charged us £7.50 per night for the tent we had. The rain stop and for the rest of our stay we had sunshine it was even warm enough not to have covers at one point.
There is 2 toilets for men and the same for the women. They where clean yet didn't have hot water but we didn't mind it was nice to have a cold wake up wash in the morning. The showers where small but they owners didn't charge any extra for using them unlike some places which charge 50p per 15 mins so to get them free is added bonus really.
My partner and uncle went fishing which they got their permits from a local fishing shop in sowerby bridge near tescos cost them £2.50 each. We went foraging for wood even though we took some of our own was fun losing our boots in the mud lol. Really enjoyed ourselves, good to find a nice friendly campsite.
The owners didn't bother you and let you do basically what you wanted. Going again but taking our 2 children this time hope they enjoy as much as we did.

We have mixed feelings about this site. It was 'fun' driving down the VERY narrow, windey lane/road to the site, which is not signposted at the entrance, which looks like the entrance to someone's backgarden. The site was quite busy when we got there but the owners came and directed us to our pitch. We paid £10, though told on the phone it was £7.50. This place is very basic; the toilet block is a large shed separated by plyboard for male/female sections, though they were clean. The shower block had 3 very small showers with very slow running water. None of the sinks have working hot taps. The one in the toilet block is just cold, no hot facility. The washing us section, which is in the shower block has an electric shower head for hot water, which can run very hot or warm, dependant upon time of day. The caravans were parked in the carpark, not a properly designated area. There is no fence on the left hand side of the field, which leads steeply down to the disused railway track, my 2 year old was fascinated by this part of the field! There are old washer drums dotted around the field, which took us a while to figure out what they were, these are for you to have your campfire. We went foraging in the woods for our firewood, and what fun we had, our 2 year old loved it and so did we, real quality family time. Our son was so dirty after foraging for wood and playing with his new found friend, so only take clothes you do not mind getting filthy in. The field itself is very tired and has huge mud patches so staying clean is a task. There is no enforced curfew so although the people next to us were not overly noisy they did stay up till 2am and so did we as tents do not have particularly thick walls. The field was very muddy, the entrance being a huge mud puddle with some boards in the middle as a stepping stone; to be manoeuvred over when trekking back and forth to your car for your stuff. It is basic and rather dirty, everything seems to have been done on the cheap, but we did enjoy ourselves and plan on coming back with our friends.
