We phoned the campsite beforehand to see if we had to book and they advised that they didn't take bookings and to just turn up. On arriving at the campsite we were disappointed that we couldn't get our vehicle close to our tent (no vehicles were allowed onto the field), but we managed to find a pitch not too far from the car park, so once we had set up our tent etc it wasn't too inconvenient.

The campsite is basically one long strip of grass next to the old train line which is in a valley secluded by trees. The pitches are not set out, so it's a case of finding a space. When we arrived at 6pm on Friday, at first glance (of the field and the car park), we thought the site was full, but because you're not restricted to camping around the edge of the field, there was actually more space than we thought.

The sign said 'pitch your tent and the warden will find you'.

We found that a number of large groups had already taken up much of the campsite by pitching their tents in circles. We found a spot between two pitches and set up. The campsite was pretty lively when we arrived and we found that it got livelier as the night went on! We're used to a bit of noise on campsites but it seemed that no action was taken by the warden until about 3am when it was impossible to sleep due to loud music and films being played (many people were taking advantage of the site's electric hook up facility!)

The site seemed to be popular with a mixture of people but there were lots of young groups drinking at all hours. There were also families with young children.

It was nice to see real fires on the site although there were lots of them and they seemed to be very close to the tents.

The car park was very limited and we saw a number of people pushing trailers/wheelbarrows of camping gear between parked cars which had blocked each other in. On a couple of occasions the warden walked around the campsite shouting a registration number and trying to find the owner because somebody was blocked in.

Saturday night was chilli night (take away available from the warden's teepee for £2.50). Although we didn't take part, it was very popular.

We took advantage of the site's location and walked a couple of miles down the disused railway line to Sowerby Bridge which is a surprisingly nice olde worlde town. We called at the Turk's Head pub for a drink. We took advantage of the local bus service to get us back to the campsite.

We stayed for just a Saturday night as the site is local to us, we arrived around 5pm and the field was packed!

However the owner(s) managed to squeeze us in and helped erecting our tent (ideal for groups of novice girls as there is plenty of help at hand for setting up (we had a hen night next to us)).

It seemed to be full of locals just there for an evening of socialising and drinking, hence very lively!

There was a queue for the toilets at 5.30am!

Toilets and showers were the worst to date.

Having said all this we probably will return but for the same reason everybody else was there- next time we have a large group together just wanting to do one noisy night on the lash.

EHU are aplenty though not many people using them.

Fires are allowed though must be elevated (conainers are supplied).

Very well drained site.

Car parking is not the best but the system seems to work (no cars on site).

Probably quieter through the week.

This was our first time camping and wanted a test drive. Read the reviews and with the river nearby and being able to have a fire we decided to come here. We went with some friends who have been camping before, so with 2 tents, 4 adults and 7 children aging from 19 to 2 we came here.

Went friday day to get a good pitch then all came after work. Not very busy so was quite pleased couldn`t wait for peace and quite, but that was the last thing we got, a group of females up till the early hours shouting, screaming and laughing, no one came to ask them to shut up although a lot of people shouting at them and they ignored them. Saturday everyone turned up and the field was packed and very roudy. Groups carried on until the early hours with music and shouting and some got very abusive but still no site manager came. The facilities were dirty and the sheds were the toilets were are very cobwebby and dirty. We came home on sunday and were knackered, but are going camping this year to a normal campsite and not a hippy commmune, not that I have anything against hippies cos I don`t.

Hands down best campsite I have been to for years!

John, Debbie and family who run the campsite make it, they are so warm, welcoming and friendly it really makes a difference to your holiday.

Myself and two friends camped here for three nights, the weather was wet for the first day but then it dried up. Not being able to take the cars onto the field is a great idea, it's not far to take you gear and it stops the field getting too muddy.

Sowerby Bridge is the nearest shopping town, good pub food, nice market with local produce and a couple of bigger shops, lidl and tesco, although there is a small post office shop only ten minutes walk away, and if you get desperate the cricket club down the road will sell you some minature wines! A good bus service runs into and out of the town, although the taxi serice is cheap enough to get to the campsite. It's a nice walk in, getting back out again with shopping bags requires a bus or taxi, or maybe we were being lazy!

Basic facilities but the hot showers are great and there is always hot water to wash your pots and pans.

Everyone when we were there camped at the edges of the field so there was plenty of space for kids to play in the middle.

We loved being able to go and collect our own fire wood, there is more than enough for everyone to share and there are also plenty of washing machine drums for your own camp fire, I imagine if it was very busy though you might have to get there early to get one.

We loved our time here and if we didn't have a wedding to go to we would have stayed all week!

The woods are big and you don't meet others when you are out walking, all the kids that were on the campsite when we were there looked to be having a ball!

Would totally recommend this campsite to anyone, it is fairly quiet, a little noise some nights but not too late on, so we didn't mind, and we were the late ones one night! Most people are very respectful and even if they stay up late its chatting over the fire so its not an issue.

Loved our time here and are already planning our return holiday! go and enjoy it!

Stayed here for 2 nights. This campsite is very, very basic, the grass was really muddy a lot of patchy grass and the showers need updating, the toilets were clean though in another little hut. The price was only £10 per night which is good if you want really old skool camping. Nothing there other than a small field and the woods. The good part of it is you can have a campfire and everyone was really friendly.

No toilet roll or hand washing facilities. The showers were dirty. No where to put your clothes and standing in what can only be described as a muddy puddle.

The other really annoying thing was the fact that you can't park near the tent so packing and unpacking in the rain just doubles the pain!

We went in a large group so just got on with it all - the surroundings are fab and the camp fire went down well

What a truly great place, this is what camping is all about! this was our fifth visit to rough hey, was only there last weekend and returned this weekend for another three nights. Firstly the campfire is a must, there's nothing better than sitting with family around the campfire. We usually buy logs on way in from cattery on way down from M62 or from garage down road in sowerby bridge, but much more fun collecing with kids from nearby woods.

Site is basic toilets and showers just really sheds, you get all kinds of people here from families to students, from professional campers to large mixed or single sex groups, but do not let this put you off as everybody well behaved even full off alcohol! Everybody talks to each other, its like a community, tesco five mins down road, great restaurant called temujins mongolian bbq in sowerby bridge where you have stir frys made as you like in front of you, normal stuff like chicken, beef or exotic like kangaroo, crocodile or ostrich! Cant wait for next visit! just £10 per tent!

Well we only stayed here for one night which was not long enough. When first entering the campsite the road leading down is very very tight I was only driving a little nissan micra so anything bigger I feel would of found it hard to get down.

The campsite was very clean and was really nice, the toilets and showers were very good not a high standard but for a campsite they were more then good enough.

The price was £10 per night per tent which I feel is very cheap as some of the other places I have been charge per person.

After setting up the tent on the grass we had a mission into the woods which was very fun there is a river and the woods were a really nice trip out.

There is a Tesco about 2minutes drive away which is very handy The campsite owners have take away delivery menus which I felt were very good it gets delivered to the gate at the top of the field which is great.

Overall I really enjoyed my stay here the campsite owners were very friendly and gave us all the information and help we needed I will definitely be returning to the campsite soon and staying for much longer.

Basic facilities, nice location, real camping!

Went for the first time out this year, just to try a new tent, so picked this site as it was relatively local.

What a great little spot! Tucked away from main road, down a gorgeous lane and hidden from view, watch out closely for the small signs.

Just find a pitch and wait for the owners to find and fee you. The washer drum fires are a great novelty, although most of your gear will smell of smoke by the time you return, but a small compromise for the fun of scavenging for logs (please leave healthy live trees alone) and sitting round a campfire toasting marshmallows!

The site and facilities are basic and functional, not too posh, not too primitive, we went after a week of rain and the ground was fairly dry. The toilets are limited (2 per sex) and located in a timber 'shed', smell of drains noted although this is near the entrance not near pitches, there is a disabled loo near the newer shower block, which is fine, the free electric shower (we didn't use, only stayed one night) seemed fine, and the washing up facilities were adequate, and indoors!

We will definitely return with friends, apparently early arrival is needed, no booking available (good idea!) and will get busy!

Owners will evict noisy campers.

The campsite was the best place for a relaxing weekend. A group of friends and family had a quality time and the owners are lovely. There's tons to do in the woods and theirs a river near the place too!

We had a mint BBQ in the sun, with a fire to keep warm when it gets dark. Everyone was chilled out and friendly! A quality place in a beautiful part of the world.
