Just returned from a 'wicked Hallowe'en Weekend' at Rough Heywood Campsite and it was fantastic! Site owners very very friendly and put on a great weekend for the kids with facepainting, competitions, trick or treating and food!.
Although it was bitterly cold everyone there had lots of fun and we will be back next summer for another visit with friends. We stayed two nights and found the facilities to be adequate and the only mess in there was from the mud off of our wellies!
Hope that the other campers there for the Halloween weekend enjoyed it as much as we did!

I have just returned home after an enjoyable but wet weekend at Rough Hey Wood. It was only our 4th camping trip so we still are quite new to all this, and we also took my brother and family who had never camped before.
Directions - SatNav took us straight to the site with the postcode.
Parking - You cant take your car to the pitch so everything had to be carried from the car to pitch. On Friday evening it was a pain, but after all the rain I was glad that cars were not allowed on the field as it would have been even more muddy. If you pack too close to the fence you may get boxed in too.
Pitch - good level grass, seeing how much rain we had over the last month it was still in good condition. Very Sheltered due to the trees all around the site.
Facilities - I found the toilets quite clean although there were only two for ladies (inc one with no lock) and only 1 sink. By Sunday it was very muddy, but that was to be expected. Did not use the showers, so cant comment but did use the washing up sinks.I think the block that houses the washing up sinks and showers closes between 9.30pm - 7.30am or something like that.
It was so nice to have a fire in the provided drums, we purchased a bag of wood each night for £5 and picked up some fallen wood although it's hard to find much near the site and it was wet. Did see some hardened campers carrying almost trees into camp (site does say it will kick you out if you cut down trees but I saw people doing it). We walked through the woods to Ripponden (Co-op) for supplies and a walk, this is about a 4miles round trip and a nice walk. The people who warden this site and the owners were very nice and helpful. The owners came round each night to collect rent (£10 per tent plus £2.50 gazibo) then at 11.30 wardens came round to ask for the music to be turned off (10pm during week). I thought that there was a very nice vibe to the site, almost quite festival feeling what with kids, dogs and music. But no good if you are looking for a really quite site. It was very quite on the friday night, but on the Saturday a group decided that at 3am they would start a sing around the campfire. They were soon told to shut up and in fairness they did.
On Saturday we order take out and this was delivered to site, with a free kebab (if you ask) the wardens had menus if you asked.
All in all a great trip and we will return at some point but not this year.

My wife, 2 kids and myself stayed here for a week. It rained all but 2 days, but didn't deter us; we had a great time.
We did cheat, we popped home (10 miles) for a shower, as after our first shower in their shower block, we decided not to use it again !
Intend to stay again though
Gets extremely busy at weekend
Post office shop was a rip off, but walked to tescos
Very friendly site
Very good value too, gave us 7 nights for price of 6

Stayed here for 2 nights with friends absolutely loved it, the washing machine drums provided to light the camp fire are a great idea and the men in our party all enjoyed searching the woodland for deadwood to burn.
The only downside we had were the toilets, which were rather dirty on our visit and the showers although nice and warm, there was nowhere to hang your clothes while you took a shower, but all in all a great campsite and I would definitely visit again.

Stayed at this site in for 2 nights and I can say it was good. There is free showers with hot water and there are 3 toilets which were clean but you need to take your own loo roll. The site is clean and at £10.00 per night that is cheap. There were 5 of us in a 8 man tent and we had lots of space when we arrived but it did get very busy, people were still arriving at 9.30pm on the Friday and same on the Saturday. It was only noisy on the Saturday when every one had a bit too much to drink but it wasn't a problem, it was a laugh.
You're allowed a camp fire but you need to get there before tea time if you want one as they get snapped up. You can buy fire wood for £5.00
There is a tesco about a mile away and a post office just outside the camp. It was a fab weekend away and will defo be returning time and time again. Its very child friendley and dogs are allowed, and every body was friendly.

Just spent 4 days at this site had a great time went with my grandson who is 6
Ok its not the best site in the country but I can say I have been to worse than this and they were owned by the big company`s, for £10 a night per tent no matter how many people and having to provide your own loo roll to me is not a problem at all.
The surrounding area was fab we had a run out to Hollingworth Lake about 20-30 mins away well worth a visit with children or just for a peaceful walk round the lake, also went for a run onto Saddleworth Moor the villages up there are very picturesque.
All in all not a bad place and run by some very welcoming people will go again with all the family and all my grandsons

My girlfriend and I visited this site over the end of May Bank Holiday and chose it as it was only an hours drive away and we wanted to try a different area, we usually go to Wales. The price of £10 a night per tent was good. On the whole the site was friendly enough with a community spirit oozing through the smog-rich air, from copious campfires. I love a campfire - one of the reasons which enticed us. The downside was the noise at night, into the early hours (I'm talking 3, 4, 5AM on each of our 3 night stay) which is unregulated by the wardens.
The facilities on site were adequate, toilets were clean enough over a bank holiday weekend. The showers were small but free and there are bottle recycling facilities (bins). The main gripes I have with this site are the disregard of the camp rules (handed out on arrival on a sheet of A4) - noise to be culled by 11.30pm at weekends, no live wood to be cut from surrounding forest for use on fire - and the lack of intervention by the wardens to apply the rules. One thing which really got my back up were the people who took it upon themselves to hack down live trees to fuel their fires. I find this totally ignorant and lazy. If they had bothered to walk a bit further out of camp there are tons of dead wood to be had.
To sum up then, the site is adequate for a cheap weekend, it has decent facilities for washing, free fire drums available for fires and plenty of deadwood to collect from the woods. There's not much to see on the site itself as it's just a large, narrow field, flanked by tall trees either side. Although if you go to the end of the field there is a track that you can follow all the way into Ripponden for a lovely quiet walk. If you can live with the noisy groups at nightfall that this site attracts, then happy days.

Visited this site for the first time on a very busy may bank holiday. What a joy to have found this place. The wardens were lovely and helped us to erect our new tent and introduced us to our neighbours.
Facilities on site are great for the money, Hot showers that were clean, Hot water for washing up and clean toilets complete with a bunch of wild flowers. On this weekend the site was packed full of campers and the visiting ice cream man must have made a fortune!
The surrounding woods are beautiful but to be honest we very rarely made it out of the site as the campers are so friendly and helpful all we seemed to do was social chit chat with everybody. The campsite had a children's talent competition and got the full support of everybody there.
Full marks to the owners Sue and Chris the owners, John and Debbie the wardens (who ran around helping everybody!) and Zak (The man who sells the wood on site) for showing us how to build and start our fire.
I will highly recommend you.

The pictures on their website show cars on the field but this is not allowed so you have to trek your stuff by foot. By the end of the evening our car was totally blocked in so couldn't go anywhere.
The loos were dirty and no toilet roll is provided and I had to pull my trousers up before I could use the loo as the floor was wet through!
I used the shower and didn't mind the unisex nature of it, but when you have a couple in the shower next to you doing whatever it was they were doing and breaking wind every 2 minutes it was not very nice and there are children around!
It became very noisy around 11pm with music and people watching dvd's at full belt.

I don't want to be completely honest about this campsite, because if you read how thrilled we were with our first camping experience, and love of this site, it will become more popular overrun and always busy, and I don't want it to! I want it to stay Yorkshire's best kept secret!
We did a one night stay, to see if we could do it before we booked a family holiday, and we had an amazing time. The site was well hidden, well sheltered quiet and peaceful, and yet full and busy.
Ok so the loo's were cobwebby sheds but they had lighting and hot & cold water, and washing up facilities and showers were basic, but for the price it's a bargain. On arrival, park up and walk your gear to your pitch and the site manager does the rounds each evening at about tea time to collect 'Rent'. Very relaxed approach, although quite a walk from one end to the other with lots of bags.
Top marks goes to the site manager who I got chatting with, he completely surprised and thrilled us by providing us with a firebucket and bag of wood as we stared jealously at our neighbours. He was wonderfully helpful and encouraging for newbies like us, and we were made to feel incredibly welcome, if somewhat underprepared. It made our stay magical and immeasurably memorable, and gave us reason to stay up till 1am drinking wine and watching the sparks fly up into the starry sky, rather than turning in early, which is what we were about to do. We enjoyed the guitar and light bongos from our neighbours quite late into the night.
I heartily recommend this site because of the wood burning fires, grab a fire bucket and concrete blocks the second you arrive to guarantee a toasty warm evening under the stars.
Nice (if muddy) walks along the disused railway and river bed lead to Rippenden a very sweet little village with a fab old pub next to the church. Local amenities are great, supermarkets, shops all just about within walking distance. They even do burger deliveries to the site where you can order the ingredients for a bbq and they get delivered ready to cook! Expensive but clever idea.
So all in all, this site and manager had a hugely positive impact which has turned us first time campers into regulars. You could not wish for a better introduction. I really cant praise them enough.
But just don't tell anyone. Please?
