My partner and I stayed at this campsite for 2 nights mid-week and the reason we chose it is that they allow open fires. We found the directions to the site very clear and had no trouble finding it. The owners came to collect the fees (£7.50 per night for a small tent) later on in the evning and they were friendly and helpful. They provided a leaflet which contained details of the local amenities and also the telephone numbers of take aways that deliver to the site. The site is a large field that leads directly into the woods and when we arrived there were only 2 other tents there so space was not a problem. The gate to the field was locked so you couldn't drive onto the it but due to the unpredictable weather we've been having, this has obviously been locked to preserve the grass.
The toilet and shower blocks were clean (do take your own loo roll as there was none provided) and there are 2 sinks for washing up. There is a Tesco just a short drive away and the local garage sells firewood should you not wish to go foraging in the woods for it!
All in all we had a very pleasant stay at Rough Hey Wood and we would return. The only thing I think they could do to improve things would be to install a freezer in the washing up area for freezing ice packs. There is enough room for one and it would be very handy.

This is a small secludered camp site which is very basic, the toilets are not heated and at times they didnt have toilet paper (so you have been warned, when you have to get up in the middle of the night)
The showers are warm (until someone decides to do their washing up in the sink) and are rather small so be careful because your dry clothes could get wet.
When we was there, there was a small community of children rugby players, which was a bit noisey at times.
The weather was not too bad when we arrived and so we set up but the weather changed for the worse on the saturday, with rain all day the kids screaming and shouting and getting covered in mud.
The local petrol station down the road sells logs and sticks for the camp fires but be aware 2 bags of sticks and 1 bag of logs £11.75 so if you can, take your own, the local pizza takeaway darios is excellent and will deliver
The camp is ok but would not go overboard about it £10 a night and some hook ups available first come first served

Went to this campsite on friday 6th june for 2 nights with 7 tents and a load of alchoholics, £7. 50 per tent regardles of how many people in the tent which makes it the cheapest one I have visited yet, 3 showers, washing up facilaties, 2 toilets which are in a separate building (well shed) very clean though, word of warning take you own toilet paper.
Right now about the actuall site or field, flat a little patchy but that is due to the fires which you are allowed to have, you must use the bins provided which are actually iners from washing machines, very ingenius.
You will find that people come here for a good time, sat around a open fire drinking until it comes out of your ears and in our case it did, some people were up until dawn so if you are looking for a peacfull camping trip don't go here, this site is for people who enjoy a drink and are willing to go 2 days full bore I loved it and so did every one else infact there was at least 200 people camping here which shows its popularity, every body I spoke to was amazed at how quickly this place fills so get there early, after 8pm on friday forget it, we were there at around 4. 45pm and by the time we had sat down for a drink which was around 6pm the site was a buz of activity and by 8pm you couldn't get you car on the car park never mind a tent on the field. Forgot to mention, you cant drive on the field, so if your at the far end of the field you have to carry your tent ect for a good 100 yds.
The owners were very polite and very amusing actualy asking you to tie this ticket on a string to your thingy. They actuly meant your guid rope on the tent door.
THIS IS BY FAR THE BEST SITE I HAVE EVER BEEN TO,
And yes I WILL be going back and back and back

Visited this site on the 9th May with a large party of 9 adults and 2 kids. Fantastic place to camp, very friendly owners. We also took our dog, had no problems with this. Also value for money was fab and we will be going back there very soon.

Just got back from a great weekend at this campsite with a large group of friends
Arrived Friday night, Sat nav took us to the owners house rather than the actual campsite (a sign is definitely needed at the right turn at the bridge) however the lady in the garden had no problem with all our cars driving up her drive she just told us where we needed to go and sent us on our way.
Once we got to the site we went ahead and set up camp, there was plenty of room and as the whole field was flat no need to worry where we pitched.
Once set up we found a barrel at the edge of the site to set our fire in (why do so many sites not allow open fires anymore - what is camping without a fire to sit round till dawn) and set off to find wood - which there is plenty.
The owners then came round to collect the £££ and found them very friendly. Less than £100 for 6 tents for 2 nights as well - bargain.
As for the rest of the weekend it was fantastic, facilities were all that you need for camping (in my eyes anyway) the showers were hot, clean and worked and the toilet block was clean. Also a short drive into Sowerby and you will find a tesco for anything you forgot plus plenty of food places if you can't be bothered to cook.
The river at the bottom of the banking is tricky to get to but if you don’t mind sliding down the bank every now and again definitely worth getting down to. However for the less adventurous of you a walk to the end of the field and though the gate it is a lot easier to get to.
All in all a great weekend with no complaints and will definitely be returning in the future.

Stayed for one night with our 2 year old.
Great location, and very friendly owners.
It's a great site, completely surrounded by tall trees on all sides, and flat as a pancake too.
The weekend we went they didn't allow cars onto the field. Not sure if that's a permanent policy however, but I think it's better.
The woodland walks are georgeous and highly recommended.
The fact that you can have a camp fire is the reason we selected this site. It's dissapointing however that this seems to encourage some campers to cut down branches off live trees. Don't they realise green wood doesn't burn. Nothing to do with the site, or the owners but maybe they could put up a sign. There was plenty of storm damaged or dead trees around too, so there's no need to be cutting down live wood.
The toilet and shower facilities were very good. Basic but very clean. They looked like they's been done up this season. Only slight critism is the lights in the loo. It's on one of those timer buttons and the lights don't stay on long enough.
Definately will return though.

Relaxed and friendly campsite, a recommended visit for campers that like the fun of back to basics camping. On this occasion I used a tent at this site, whilst they accept caravans access is a real challenge for a unit to neonate at the right turn on the bridge.Looking at it, if you had helpers then the easiest option would be to unhitch and push. The field appears well looked after; good level pitches with several BBQ grills to make use of.Located within woodland the site is adjacent to a disused railway line providing some lovely walks. for fire wood id recommend bringing your own for ease, however a good forage in the woods will find plenty of dead wood, however one will need to look far and wide away from the camp site as it is regularly foraged around the perimeter Waist bins are also provided around the site. The toilets always found in clean serviceable condition, these are situated at the entrance in a wooden hut, no hot water, except for the shower. (separate disabled toilets are provided)Drinking water tap on the outside of the hut. All in all enjoyed my two night midweek stay.

If you like roughing it this is the place for you, flat field, trees at either side. Campfires allowed on old bbqs supplied, does tend to get rather muddy when wet weather but the kids loved it.Plenty of space ,didnt find any dog muck like in other reviews. Loved it will go again

Well weve just come back from this little place, deep in the heart of some wonderful woodland and lovely walks. We have just bought an 8 berth tent and was wanting somewhere local to set up and see how everything set up correctly. Having wieghed up the competetion, we opted for this site, as it had the bare essentials, everything you need to survive a camping trip! N.B camping isn't 5 star! it isn't meant s to be, its meant to be about being outside and doing family things and talking to other campers - moan over! Our tent was large and the site is as described, its flat and has hook ups, remmember to get there early as the site filled up quite quickly. There are hook ups, but be sure you have a long connector or you might need to get there early to ensure a good pitch. The toliets were always clean and the showers were fine, please bare in mind your camping and this isn't a hotel!. The owners, were great and friendly and always prepared to chat and it was nice to see them talking to all of us. The rules are quite simple, get there early, get a good pitch and keep things tidy and at night repsect fellow campers - noise travels on a campsite. We had aparty whilst we were there for our daughter and invited family and friends and had a ball, we actively encouraged the other kids to join in . I was a little worried because of the number people visiting us,,but the owners were fine and we had everything wrapped up by 7pm. FIRES! Excellent - what better way to spend an evening, build a fire and all sit round into the night, my kids loved it. And better still it gave them chance to wind down after an exciting day!. There is just one more comment, take the kids and live alittle! its fun camping and on this site you will have a ball dont forget to talk to other campers as there great at finding shops etc. Were going back in a fortnight august bank holiday !

A word of warning to any medium to large motorhome owners (& caravanners for that matter) attempting to access this site. The right hand turn after the bridge noted on the site directions is extremely tight! We were a 7m motorhome and, what with a narrow stone walled bridge to negotiate, combined with a 90 degree turn into a stone walled narrow lane, it required a steady nerve and about a 15 point turn to get around the corner.
Getting away from the site was just as traumatic and wasn’t helped by a car blocking any turning space. We did finally manage to get out but a 270 degree manoeuvre was required which took about 20 minutes!
Whilst the UKCampsites website description doesn’t particularly mention access difficulties, the Camping & Caravaning Site Book does i.e. Not recommended for anything other than small motorhomes or caravans (I wasn’t aware that it was CS until we were driving up the narrow lane after the right turn!) and if I had seen that I would have never attempted to access this site.
The actual site is fine with a large area of hardstanding and a huge area for tenting. We did have electric supply problems but I think that was to do with a faulty cool box connected into our EHU by an adjacent tenting family that tripped out.
We didn’t need to use the site facilities as such, but they looked fine when we were checking the fuse boxes for tripped switches!
