Just returned from a weekend at this site. I can only describe it as a work in progress. Firstly, check in went smoothly, given a map to find our pitch, the paths around the site are very rough and uneven.
We were the furtherest you could be away from everything, but we did not mind too much. Although it would of been nice if the grass had been cut, it was at least 5 inches long and very annoying, especially in the morning when it was wet, our shoes were constantly soaking.
Another really annoying thing was how far away the toilet block and grey waste were, not too bad if you had a car, as most people were going down to them in there cars but this is not an option if you are there in a motorhome. Definitely need another amenities block at the top of the site.
There is also a rescue centre that you can look around, slightly pricey at £5 per person but it was nice to see the animals. Will we return, yes but possibly not till next year when hopefully there has been more improvements to the site.

I booked this site very last minute for the bank holiday weekend as somewhere not too far from home. It's easy to find off the A66 as its right next to it.
The road was pretty noisy particularly on the Friday night but I wasn't too bothered and the rest of the family slept well. The site has a main caravan and camping field then an overflow camping field down a small slope.
There's a big pond in the middle and a couple of big trees with rope swings on which all the kids loved. There is a portacabin with 3 toilets for men and 3 for women although only 2 were working in both this weekend.
There are 2 outside washing up sinks although I couldn't get any hot water out of it. The toilets were a bit grubby by Saturday as the ground was damp and lots of mud got walked in. There is the main block that also looks like a porta cabin.
There are 4 toilets and 4 showers in each of the men's and women's which doesn't seem a lot for the size site. That said though I didn't struggle getting in the shower. They are free but have push buttons which I had to keep pressing every 10 seconds. The shower head is also fixed in place.
On Saturday there was a bucket and mop to clean the shower floor but this had disappeared by Sunday. There are 2 play areas on site, one near the shop and one on the main camp field which weren't bad. Also a nice dog walking area. I personally felt the grass was a bit on the long side but this may have been because it had been too wet to cut.
On the whole it was fine for 2 nights last minute. I doubt I'll be rushing back, at least not on a busy bank holiday.
As for the local area, Barnard castle is very nice for a wander around. We also visited a park in Newton aycliffe.

We arrived on a Thursday for 2 nights. Didn't get shown to our pitch, we were just given a map. It was about as far away from reception as it could be, right on the fringe of the site. We weren't given any info' about waste disposal etc. Campers close to us were using the clean water taps to wash their pots & pans etc, because the facility was too far to walk to.
We only found it after asking another caravan owner, and even then I had to take it by car as the container was heavy. When I got to the 'area' I had to ask again as there was no signage. The area was untidy, not marked up for those not quite familiar and difficult to use because of the height of the drains.
At night it was very rowdy(10. 30pm) with no staff anywhere near to report to. Dogs off their lead. One actually had a go at me before the owner showed up. Just as well the dog didn't go for a child! Play area for kids was very basic. Still looking for trampoline and walled garden. Weatheriggs. £10 for a family ticket.
Interesting but over in about 10mins. ( too expensive, I think) We won't be back that's for sure. This is my personal point of view and not just a dig at the site. It needs sorting before you disappoint too many people.

Just got back from a week camping at this site with my partner, daughter and my friend and his kids and we were all very impressed. Firstly the location, the site is set in some beautiful countryside with lovely open views. Barnard castle is just 5 mins away by car and there is a Morrison's in the town centre open until 8pm. There's also farm shop on the way to town. A heritage walkway runs by the site and eggelston Abby and the Bowes museum are also only minutes away. The site is close to the A66 but we weren't bothered by traffic, to be honest I only heard it once, in the middle of the night when I couldn't sleep and even then it was just a bit of background noise. The site itself is large and well maintained and even though we were there during the school holidays and there was a fair amount camping there was so much open space you had a lot of privacy. The field was well drained and not boggy which is especially good as it bucketed down the first few days. The ground is fairly rocky though, we bent a few pegs before braking out the hard ground pegs, however I suppose all the little stones help with drainage.
The toilets and shower block, wow! I've never seen such nice facilities on a campsite. They're new and were kept spotless and well stocked with toilet paper and soap. There's also a disabled toilet, kitchen area and games room in the same block. The games room was a little run down but it kept the kids happy when it was too wet to play outdoors. The only niggle I had with it was that I couldn't use the toilet when I was walking the dog as dogs weren't allowed inside.
On site there are several playgrounds, duck pond, a gift shop, reclamation barn, animal rescue centre and a lovely coffee shop/restaurant. I thought the food in the coffee shop was a bit pricey but the tea and coffee were reasonably priced. I can't comment on the food as we just cooked our own but it sounded nice on the menu.
There are lots of very friendly ducks on the site who came and visited us in our camp every day and lots of rabbits.
The customer service was excellent and both the staff and owner were very friendly and helpful. On the day we arrived we spent hours struggling in the pouring rain to get our airgo cirrus 6 to stay up, to no avail. Once they were aware of the problem the staff and owner could not have been more helpful. Eventually we admitted defeat and went back home for the night before returning the next day with a new tent.
I promised my daughter on the last day I'd take her to see the animals as I mistakenly thought they were all in the rescue centre barn. What I didn't realise was the majority of them are kept in 25? Acres of paddocks and woodland which unfortunately we didn't have time to visit, I guess we'll just have to return next year and see them properly 😉
All in all this is a wonderful campsite which we will definitely be returning too and I would heartily recommend it to anyone.

I stayed here with my 3 children for 4 nights - Monday to Friday, with my 2 friends and their daughter. The site is very easy to find being directly off the A66 - approximately 15 minutes West of Scotch Corner. I was a bit cautious about the noise of vehicles being so close to the A66, however no noise could be heard on the site.
The site is fairly large with plenty of pitches including many with electric (if you like that sort of thing). There is a large duck pond in the centre of the site with very tame ducks that wonder around the camp. At one point there were about 6 ducks walking in between our legs whilst we were sat cooking on our fire pit.
There are 2 main play areas for the kids. One is located next to the café at the front of the site and the other is located next to the duck pond.
The combined toilet/shower block with a games room was less than 5 minutes walk from anywhere on the site. The only down side was that dogs are not allowed in this block and considering it is supposedly a dog friendly site I found this a bit strange.
This is an ideally situated site with a Morrisons supermarket being less than 10 minutes away in Barnard Castle - Turn right out of the site and take the next right off the A66 for Barnard Castle and just follow the road - and a Farm shop just 4 miles left on the A66 from the site.
We are already planning our holiday for next year to come back to this same site. I can definitely recommend this site for families or couples.

Very good site for location to Barnard castle. The ground is very hard you will need strong pegs and good mallet to wack them in.
The road noise is quite bad and relentless you will need ear plug if you plan on staying here.
The shower block is dated but clean not the best not the worst. Could also do with something on site on the evenings.

First time on this site and we will not be returning. On arrival young man on desk was very polite gave us a map of where to pitch however when you get there they are not marked and obvious.
We asked others what their number was and had new arrivals asking us to help them. There was a security gate which you get a fob for however next to us was an open gate directly onto a road which some people were using and pitched on some spare grass and used facilities, who knows if they paid.
The toilet block also had the children's play area and the children were running around whilst you try to use the toilet. They also were throwing info leaflets all over. The dog on a leash rule was a joke. But the worst of all was the endless road noise we had very little sleep.

This site was a strange mixture. Some things were excellent - the layout of the site was great: large pitches, well drained, well maintained grounds and a pretty pond with ducklings at the heart of the site; at night it looked beautiful with strings of solar lights reflecting in the water. The young man who showed us to our pitch was very helpful and friendly and recommended a nice walk to us. The location was OK, we hadn't realised quite how close to the A66 the site was, but in the end this wasn't a big problem, the noise wasn't excessive. The ladies' amenities were fine and clean but my husband thought the gents were dirty. There was a nice little children's outside play area.
Two things let this site down for me. Firstly the confusing signage and unprepossessing entrance - we thought we had gone to the wrong place and were on the point of leaving as we could see plenty of signs for the static caravans but none for the campsite.
Secondly the weird combination of club room (for static owners?) and the amenities for the campsite. One large slightly run down portakabin combined children's room (battered table football and apparently broken tv), an adults club room (with a 'do not enter' sign on the door) plus showers, toilets and washing up room. This meant that some kids spent a lot of the day hanging around the toilets, and at night it felt like you were walking into a private party if you needed to use the facilities. Rules for the rest of the building (like no alcohol and no dogs) didn't appear to apply to the club room. We were also less than impressed by the dog poo that we stood in outside the amenities block!

Bad choice. Big site and very poor facilities. Four toilets and four showers not enough. Also a long walk to grey water disposal and chemical waste, needed to use the car, not ideal to load waste water into it. OK pitches, but blocks are needed as not level. We were in the top corner and the fall in the ground was bad. Impossible in a tent. Not much information in reception regarding walks from site, shop is very poor. Could be improved. Rude service with another customer, left waiting and staff talked as if she wasn't there. Feel the site has got too big too quickly. Good access to the site and A66 into the lakes. Handy for Barnard Castle but so are other more pleasant sites.

We have been to this site a few times and enjoyed it however this last trip was very disappointing.
They have expanded rapidly recently, this may be the cause of our issues.
The electric kept tripping off, this must have happened around 8 times on our first evening, and another 8 or so times on the next day. On informing the staff and the owner we were told that too many people had electric fires etc on! To which I responded that they should have lower current breakers on the pitches so that they don' t trip the whole site.
When we phoned up on each occasion to let them know the electric was off (trying to help them by keeping them informed. ) this was met with quite rudely.
Anyway, one of the reasons we have kept going back was down to the pleasant walks in the woods and feeding the animals. However they have started charging to go into this area, very disappointed kids. I think it's £10 for the family.
Really disappointed and we won't be rushing back.
