North Morte Farm campsite is a wonderful get-away for anybody, whether you are old or young, single or with family or friends. The campsite itself is off a small road in Mortehoe, and is easy to locate, with numerous signs along the incoming roads. The pricing seemed very reasonable, with no added extras( such as shower tokens). The location is fantastic, with stunning views overlooking the sea, my favourite being when I woke one morning to a bright, warm summer's day to catch the outline of Lundy Island, and a ferry jetting of in its direction, under the cloudless sky. You are not allocated a pitch per say, but rather you can choose anywhere on free on the campsite to pitch. The areas to pitch vary tremendously, with very few overly flat pieces of land. As the campsite is on the peak of a hill, you can end up right on top, where you are closer to the loos and on flater land, or lower around the edges, where it is slightly less flat and further from the loos. It is worth exploring the campsite on arrival before pitching to find your perfect spot, especially around the edges, where there are nice, secluded spots with flat ground and splendid views of the surrounding fields and ocean.

The open view of the ocean can be a disadvantage, due to the wind, which is usually always present. It was only light wind during the day for us, however we had hot, sunny weather everyday. It was more noticeable in the evenings, when it became a bit chilly, but certainly not a hazard nor did it affect our grilling or gourmet cooking. In stormy conditions however you certainly would be at nature's mercy, and cooking would be a no go, although we didn't actually experience this ourselves. The wind here was definitely the biggest gripe for us.

The toilets and showers were clean, with many toilets, showers and sinks for when the campsite was busy. The showers themselves were a bit old school, with a push button which only provided flowing water for a short space of time, we would of much preferred to have paid for a token in exchange for say 10 mins of continuous flowing water. There is also a washing up room for cleaning up which did its job. For water there were taps dotted around the campsite, and bins for rubbish and recycling were also present.

In terms of things to do, you can go into Woolacombe where there is the main beach, which is accessible by foot or vehicle. The walk is about 25 mins, but is a good way to become accustomed to the local area. A cab from the beach back to the campsite is about £5, which is good value. This beach is huge and is mainly a surfing beach, which gets busy. For swimming there is another beach, about 5 minutes walk from the campsite, down a little path, called 'Rockham Beach. ' It is quiet, and catches sun down at night! There are also nice coastal paths around the area, where you can go one way to the lighthouse and back round to the campsite or the other way into Mortehoe.

Mortehoe itself is a small village, which is home to three pubs, of which two we visited, and can safely say are gorgeous, with some of the tastiest ales and lagers around. We liked the Chicester Arms, and suggest you check it out too.

Overall we had a very positive experience, and would definitely visit again, dependent on the weather. The area surrounding is calm, with numerous things to do, and the campsite was clean, with brilliant views. If you are looking to visit, go ahead and visit for a couple of days, and be prepared to enjoy!

Overview

GOOD- Great views, spacious campsite, clean loos, good pricing, lovely, calm area.

BAD- Windy( exposed), not the flattest pitches, showers need renewing.

I arrived after the office had closed but there was an alternative reception at the farm house where I was warmly greeted and given all the help I needed.

It was obvious that this is a well run, clean and tidy site. The automatic barrier with number code and window sticker is a brilliant idea. I set up on the lower camping field where the view of the bay below is dramatic. Waves breaking on rocks, Oystercatchers and gulls calling.

The ground is tent peg friendly but firm enough to keep the tent intact in probably a fairly strong wind. I levelled up my airbed with pillows and cooking table board with some shoes. The cliff path is visible and there is a link path to both it and the steps (with handrails) down to the bay. The on site shop was excellent, friendly and well stocked. Also on site is a small but well done wildlife garden with Slow worms and toads in residence. Its a fair walk to the shower block so go prepared. There could be another water tap or two in the lower area and I missed electric lighting. All in all as a base for a walking holiday this is hard to beat. I did think though that a few more level spots would not go amiss as I watched folk favour the existing ones. I'm still missing the sound of the waves as I go to sleep at night.

Its very exposed, very windy, there are hardly any flat pitches and those that are even slightly flat are so well used they are muddy. The sheltered areas get really crowded, you can't book in advance and it's huge, so there is a long walk, uphill, to the toilets and showers.

So why does it get such rave reviews, and so many repeat visitors?

Because the views across to Lundy and Wales and the cliffs are stunning. The long walk to the toilets is probably the best walk, with the best scenery, to any toilets, anywhere.

The slopping pitches are very steeply slopping, but we have never felt crowded, even on a Bank Holiday weekend, as there are acres and acres of space to chose from, if you are prepared to chock the table legs and roll off the airbed.

There is a great mix of campers, families and small children, surfers, walkers, cyclists. Its friendly, surprisingly quiet and calm.

However, it's not for everyone. As it is on the coast its very exposed to the elements, our tent nearly took off in the wind when we were there at the end of August, I would never go without checking the forecast. We knew the wind would die down in the evening.

In my opinion the Pros far outweigh the Cons.

Love this campsite! The views are amazing, it's steep but we found a relatively flat place that was quite sheltered from the elements. The facilities are excellent and well maintained, plus there are good play facilities for the kids. Would highly recommend this campsite and would love to go back. Think the only downside would be not being able to precook, but we phoned them before we left and were assured there was plenty of room.

 Love, love, love this site!

Amazing views, super friendly staff, excellent facilities, superb local pubs, lovely walks - I could go on & on. 10/10!

To me it's a positive that you can't pre-book - I arrive on a Friday, by lunchtime & have my pick of spots - a nice level pitch close to the loo's & showers.

Pitches priced per person per night at £9. 25 - perfect for solo camping.

North Morte Farm don't change a thing!

The site took a bit of finding but well worth it when we got there. The scenery was spectacular especially from our highspot.

There were areas you could tuck a tent up against the hedges out of the wind.

Plenty of room for everybody.

All the facilities were good, toilet block roomy with everything needed including a big sink that the dog/children could be sluiced down in! OK probably not designed for the dog but it was big enough!

The shop site was well stocked and local pubs friendly with nice food.

Very steep walk down to secluded beach with a waterfall.

All good, definitely going back.

A great basic campsite with views that cannot be beaten anywhere.

Positives:

The views are outstanding. Sat on the corner of North Devon there are sea views from the North down to the South West.

Very clean and quiet campsite.

Toilets and Showers were always clean (saw a cleaner in there 3 times a day).

There's a baby bath / sink with shower head.

There are 2 parks to keep the kids entertained.

No allotted pitching so you can camp where you want to as long as you are 15 feet from a neighbour (unless they are in your party).

Short 5 min walk to the nearest pub and village.

Excellent location for Woolacombe and Ilfracombe.

Virtually private beach accessed from bottom of campsite.

Staff are friendly and supportive.

Great access to the coast path - Woolacombe in one direction and BullPoint Lighthouse in the other.

Price was excellent compared to other sites in this area (and in fact around the country).

Plenty more positives but will leave for you to find out.

Negatives:

75% of the camping field is on a gradient. We pitched on a relatively flat part and still had to prop up tables and cooker stand to get a level surface.

Beach is accessed via a 60 foot steep stair case, which is after a 500 yard walk down the steep hill at the end of the campsite.

Due to the excellent location overlooking the sea to the west, there is a tendency for strong winds.

Depending on your pitch, there is a walk of up to 7 minutes to the toilets. As we had the in-laws we tended to all go in a car to save their legs.

Woolacombe parking is approx £6 - £7 per day. So get there early and stay late to get your moneys worth.

There is no pub or entertainment on the site.

All in all we loved this site and will definitely be coming back as soon as possible. Other campers that were newbies to the site also commented on the site and would also be coming back.

Recommend this site to anyone.

It's hard for me to review this campsite as it's far and away my favourite site. UKCampsite.co.uk reviews are meant to be objective, but how can you be objective about a place you simply love? So I've put off reviewing it, but I haven't been for a few months and there isn't a free weekend in sight

Let's start with what North Morte Farm (NMF) doesn't have: a clubhouse; a cafe; neatly marked, level pitches; a kids' club; EHU - except for the rather boring touring field; much shelter from the Atlantic winds. I often camp at other sites that have some or all of these, but the attractions of NMF far outweigh them all.

A. The views. Panoramic. Exceptional. From Hartland point in the south-west, past Lundy Island, Milford Haven, the Gower and right up the Bristol channel to Barry. And even the inland views are wonderful: nearly all National Trust land, rolling, rocky countryside with grazing sheep and drystone walls.

B. The beaches. Rockham bay, almost a private beach for NMF, with rockpools and good swimming. A steep 10 minute walk down and a heart-attack inducing 20 back. But worth it. Its lack of easy access ensures it's never crowded. Then there's Woolacombe, one of the biggest and most popular surfing beaches in England. You can walk down easily in half an hour from NMF. Get the bus or a taxi back. On the way is Barracane Beach, made entirely of shells, with a brilliant little cafe that does great food in the day and Sri Lankan curries on summer evenings! And Lee Bay, about 15 minutes drive away. The best rockpools ever, and a hidden swimming beach you can reach via a 'secret smugglers' path' at low tide.

C. The village. Three pubs, three shops, two restaurants and a chip shop, all within a short, level walk. Sitting outside The Ship Aground on a warm summer's evening watching the people pass by, hearing the church bells, seeing the sheep on the hills behind, is one of my greatest pleasures. (Mortehoe used to have a delightfully eccentric restaurant called The Buttery. Its closure a few years ago was very sad. )

D. The camping fields. Acres of rolling, cropped grass. No more than 1% anything like level. Used to be a bit of a problem when we had a tent rather than the campervan, particularly when the site was very busy. But try to get there when others are packing up, drive around a while, and you'll find something not to steep to pitch on.

E. The site facilities. Very good shower block, always clean. A couple of small kids' playgrounds. A shop that's open long hours, has a good stock, including booze, and really pleasant staff.

F. The owners. The family really work hard at keeping the site immaculate, yet seemingly wild. They're round all day clearing up, cutting grass, hauling litter. They are unfailingly polite and helpful.

There's so much more I could write, but I think I've said enough.

It's the best.

A great campsite - inexpensive and beautiful! If you want a swimming pool etc this is not for you - but if you want natural beauty it is!

We pitched our family tent on a sloping field (which all the fields are) and I didn't quite get it right. I rolled downhill most nights and had to reposition - but I am sure someone with more experience would do it better. If you arrive at the right time I am sure you could find a flatter pitch, or if you were prepared to be further away from the toilet block.

The view was fantastic and made up for every roll down the hill. A beautiful sunset every night (although we were lucky enough to holiday in the fantastic weather). Great for my photography practice.

The shop stocked all that was required each morning at reasonable prices. The showers and toilets were always clean. The back of the shower block provided showers with more pressure but all were warm.

The rubbish was picked up regularly and the site was kept very clean. The washing up facilities were indoors and again kept clean.

I would recommend this site to anyone - although would imagine in the not so good weather it is a little exposed.

For beauty - and for a quick walk to a get away from it all beach, you just can't beat it!

We visited this campsite right at the tail end of the school summer holidays. It's not ideal that they don't take bookings (particularly in the summer holidays!) but the site office was helpful when called in advance to see whether there was likely to be availability and in the event there was plenty of space when we turned up on the Wednesday morning after the Bank Holiday.

We were lucky to bag a great spot only a couple of minutes from the loos but on high ground with a great view. The ground does undulate right across all the tent fields, but we had no difficulty pitching our huge tent in the flat space between hillocks and there were plenty of other similar spots across the site.

The three best things about this site in my opinion are the views, the proximity to Mortehoe, and Rockham Beach.

We had a panoramic 270 degree sea view from our tent - from a very distant South Wales to the north through to Lundy Island 'floating' above the sea at sunset. Absolutely stunning! Even over land you're looking at National Trust-protected headland, which is also beautiful.

Mortehoe village centre is only a 5 minute walk and has more eating and drinking options than you can shake a stick at - with 3 pubs all serving what looked like good food (though we only ate at one - The Ship Aground - which was perfectly fine), a cream tea shop, a renowned fish restaurant and a chippy to name just the ones I noticed. We took the easy option and barbequed a lot less than we do usually!

Rockham Beach, on the other hand, is quite a shlep down a narrow track (and hard uphill all the way back) but is perfect for rock-pooling and sandcastles, and - that rare thing - is dog friendly in high summer. We took our barbeque down one day and had a memorable afternoon cooking sausages and baking bananas on an almost deserted beach.

Other points about the campsite - the toilet block is well equipped (lots of showers, baby changing, soap by the sinks, power points for hairdryers etc) and very clean. There is a laundry room, with lots of tumble driers and a well stocked shop.

There are also two fairly basic children's play areas which the 4 boys in our party (aged 7 - 9) enjoyed for the odd half an hour here and there. The fish van (owned by the same people who run the fish restaurant) came to the site for an hour every evening which was very tempting, but sadly we ran out of time and didn't get around to trying it.

The only negative is the fact you can't book, but as other reviewers have said, I guess this is unavoidable due to the nature of the land. That said, we shall definitely be taking pot-luck again and would certainly recommend North Morte Farm.
