We spent 4 nights at Wood Farm in the Hillside field. It is a lovely site that is kept spotless. The site is easy to find straight off the A35.

The Hillside field is free camping rather than allotted pitches. The field is very hilly so there are only a limited number of areas you would want to pitch to avoid camping on a slope.

Many of the reviews point out the road noise as a negative of the site. We weren’t bothered by it at all possibly because the Hillside field is the furthest point on the site from the road.

The facilities were great. There are four toilet blocks which are cleaned daily (mid morning) and we found them spotless throughout our stay. The showers are push button and of a good warm temperature. The washing up area was also clean with washing up cloths provided in case you had forgotten one. The distance from the Hillside field to the nearest toilets was the biggest negative to us. Although only approx 300metres this was uphill on the way back because we camped at the top of the hill, and it felt quite a trek at night.

There is a combined shop & reception selling basics but it isn’t the cheapest. The swimming pool is a good size and temperature, and open most of the day. There is also a games room (table tennis, pool, air hockey and soft play section), a cafe and an outdoor play area although we didn’t use these.

There is WiFi available to purchase on site. £10 for 4 days on 2 devices but the signal is very weak on the Hillside field so we had to walk down to the toilet block if we wanted to use it.

They don’t allow the use of bicycles, scooters, skate boards on site for Health and Safety reasons which seemed harsh.

Wood farm is a mile from Charmouth. A pretty place but limited in facilities. You could walk it but beware it would be a steep climb on the way back!

Lyme Regis is about 2 miles (also a hilly walk) and is more substantial than Charmouth with some lovely little shops, cafes, pubs and ice cream stalls! The walk along the sea front is really nice although it gets really busy in good weather it seems. There is also a Tesco express and Co-op for any food essentials although if you want a bigger supermarket you’ll need to go to Axminster which is 5 miles from the site.

Wood Farm is a beautiful site that is well maintained with friendly helpful staff.

Stayed in the hillside camping field, nice and quiet, great view. Longer walk to great facilities but nothing too far. Yes there is a little road noise but it's not too distracting over the noise of the birds and cows. All in all a great site.

Tesco's in axminster 10 mins away for supplies. Lyme regis 5 mins way, charmouth walkable (but not much there!)

Write UP for Wood Farm 11 - 24 April 2015

Wood Farm Caravan and Camping Park, Charmouth, Dorset DT6 6BT

This was our annual U3A Rally which was organised by Jim who unfortunately was unable to come along owing to his wife Shirley being too poorly.

Access is by doing a very sharp left hander off the A35 (at the roundabout just before Charmouth) onto a side road and then into the site. All the roads are fully metalled and all the pitches are Hard standings with gravel for the Awnings. Although sited on a rather steep hill, the pitches had been levelled with terracing. Basically the higher up on the site - the better your views, all lovely.

The Toilet Block was first class, immaculately clean with good disability access and laundry facilities. The whole site was disability friendly/aware.

This was a very large park with static caravans, fishing lakes, games rooms, large indoor swimming pool, restaurant, large dog walks and loads of pitches for touring caravans.

The Fish and Chip van is in attendance on Monday nights and we rated it as very good. The restaurant has specific nights for curries, steaks and pies. There is also a fish and chip shop in Charmouth which is very good too.

The staff were all helpful and friendly. There are local walks chitties available from reception all free (donation to the lifeboat).

There is a caravan shop/retailer in Charmouth for any caravan/motorhome necessities.

The bus stop is outside the site entrance, over the A35 and is on the Charmouth Road. Busses go to Exeter/Bridport/Dorset/Poole.

Television reception fine on DVT and Sky.

All of Dorset is lovely and the Charmouth locals are extreamly friendly offering advice on how to find Fossils from the beach which is a mixture of sand and pebbles. At the time of writing no one was in the sea owing to the temperature in mid April. I did manage to find some Fossils, but if you come here and do not find any, don’t worry - the Fossil Shop on the beach sells them. They are between 65 and 400 million years old. There is also a museum by the Fossil shop which is free and you can update yourself on all things Fossilish.

We paid 110 pounds for seven nights then extended for a further 4 nights at 18 pounds per night.

For further info/prices just put Wood Farm Caravan and Camping Park into your browser.

We saw this site at its best - lovely sunny weather throughout our stay.

Highly recommended, no problems to report and will certainly visit again i. D. C.

We stayed at Wood Farm back in the 90's when we had our caravan so this return visit was a long time coming!

Easy access straight off the very busy A35. Really friendly check-in and shown to pitch too. We had a lovely large hardstanding in the first section with views over the Dorset countryside. However, we were close to the road and it was very noisy all day and some of the night.

Great facilities. Not sure how many blocks they have but there are plenty. Our closest one was spotless and even had separate shower rooms. Great indoor washing up area too.

Good shop with essentials, not cheap but convenient. Wi-Fi was VERY expensive.

The walk into Charmouth is easy, downhill all the way (but obviously not on the way back!). Not much in Charmouth these days or so it seems. Both pubs were closed in the afternoons! However we did go back to the George in the evening and had a lovely meal.

The walk into Lyme Regis, up over the hill and golf course, is harder than you think but do-able. We got the bus back (£3 each for a less than 5 minute ride but it saved walking up that hill!). Lyme is lovely, much better than Charmouth, with lots of shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants to while away a sunny day people watching. We had a fantastic meal in the Rock Point Inn, sat on the terrace in the very warm sunshine, overlooking the bay. Perfect.

Wood Farm is a beautiful, well looked after site, and as much as we'd love to return one day I think the road noise may put us off?

What a lovely site superb pitch fully serviced, the staff were very friendly especially upon arrival showed us to our pitch and made sure we were ok, the pool cost of £2-50 is an extra cost but the upkeep nowadays of a pool is very costly hence the charge.

The cafe very good breakfast as is the steak night quality food and cooked the way you want it.

We heard the boy racer on his bike every evening at the same time but that was the only traffic noise that really stood out.

We fortunately picked the weekend when the guitars on the beach record attempt was on and got a full days entertainment for free and glorious sunshine to go with it, the finale was Ian Gillan playing smoke on the water and all the boats in the bay setting of distress flares with orange smoke drifting across the bay.

The negative part of the holiday was the fishing, there are now no carp or tench in either lake as the otters and cormorants have eating them shame as could be a good fishery.

Overall a very good and pleasing restful holiday will definitely go again.

First time to this site will not be the last (so the wife says?). Very pleasant greeting on arrival and escorted to pitch, we were also given a choice of pitches.

The site is very clean and tidy I used the different toilet/shower blocks and found them all very clean and tidy. The pool was very good and the games room and children's area must have been good as we hardly saw our daughter once we were back on site.

Charmouth and Lyme were both nice places to visit both within walking distance although hilly, bridport and west bay aiso nice places only a short drive.

The campsite is very easy to find - it is very difficult to miss as it is directly off A35 / A3052 roundabout at the top of the roads to Charmouth and Lyme Regis. The staff at reception were very friendly and lead us to our (allocated) pitch on a quad bike. They say that a record is kept of any previous pitches you have had, so if you want the same the same one again, they will make every effort to do this. The site is very hilly and some of the caravans had novel techniques to get them level.

We were sited in the Eastern low side of the site - called something like Oak Lea. It is the nearest section to the pool and play area. It is a terraced section with 3 or 4 caravans per terrace, with fully serviced pitches. Our pitch was level though. Some pitches around the outside of this section were electric hook up only. Each terrace is not that ‘deep’ so positioning the caravan can be tricky. Reversing on involved almost jack knifing Next to us appeared a long twin axle caravan on one day. Sadly I missed this being positioned but the owner said it was interesting! When full, the site seems fairly densely populated with our pitch being overlooked from all directions.

The facilities are modern and very clean. Near us was a block with whole rooms containing a shower, toilet and sink. These were lovely to use - your own washroom but it did mean they were often all in use - a little frustrating if you just needed to pop in to use the toilet. There were other standard toilet blocks just a short walk away though.

The pool on site was a hit with my 8 year old son. There is a charge of £2. 50 per person per swim so this did add up. However, it is a lovely clean indoor pool. If you think you’ll get the use, there is a discount for buying multiple swims with the minimum being 20 I think. Probably good if you have 3 or 4 children!

The games room proved popular too with my son often asking to head down there on his own to see who else was there. It became a great little meeting place for the children and he made many friends. The room contains a pool table, table tennis table, soft play area, TV and vending machine.

There is so much to do in the local area. My son loves fossils and dinosaurs and we found loads of ammonites, belemnites, devils toenails etc just lying on the beach. Particularly good for this was Monmouth Beach walking West around half a mile from Lyme Regis, where the spectacular Ammonite Pavement (with huge fossils set in the rock ledges) can be seen at low tide. Also good is walking East towards Charmouth from Lyme Regis towards a cliff called Black Ven. There is currently work going on with the sea defences here so this walk is only possible from Lyme by walking on the beach at low tide. We did the organised fossil walk on one day, booked at the Lyme Regis museum - very informative and well worth it.

For food in the area, we liked the Royal Oak pub in Charmouth. This can be walked in around 15 minutes from the site. I’d recommend walking to Charmouth but driving to Lyme Regis as this is just a bit further, down a very steep hill and has plenty of car parks.

Back to the site itself, there is a good mobile phone signal and 3G coverage. I notice some reviews mentioned road noise from the A35. It was fine where we were, just like the sound of wind in trees with just the occasional boy racer making a bit more noise. I suspect it may be a bit noisier in the Western higher part of the site as this backs onto the A35 after the roundabout where vehicles are accelerating away up the hill. Traffic noise aside, it is a very quiet site, virtually silent after about 9pm. There is a ban on bicycles and child’s scooters etc being used on site. When I first read this, I thought it was very harsh. However, after now seeing some of the very steep roads and paths on the site, I think it is correct. There would be some nasty accidents with a great speed very quickly reached. There are hardly any level bits!

In summary, we had a lovely eight nights here and will certainly return, probably to the same pitch if possible.

This is an immaculate site. The pitches are generous and well laid out in small areas. Each area has immaculate toilet blocks, plenty for each area and they are cleaned regularly. The grounds for use of guests are very extensive and well kept. There is a restaurant/bar serving a variety of meals. The site is very close to Charmouth which has shops and pubs and Lyme Regis is a very short drive away. All in all an excellent site to visit.

Stayed for a week, and did not want to come home. Staff amazing, views amazing. Little noise from a35, but not a problem. Nice little walk past the piggies to the lake. Charmouth is a mile away with it's cafe's and stony beach and is a very quaint little village with a handful of shops and pubs. Lyme regis is lovely too, if you park at the top of lyme, although quite a tough walk back up, the views are amazing. Would love to buy a static at wood farm.

This is the third year that we have stayed near Lyme Regis for the annual fossil festival and the third campsite we have tried. This one is about perfect. The premium pitches with water and waste hook up are on terraces. The area is naturally a hilly one. Although the pitches are hard standings you do have to go along the top of a grass bank to get to the hard standing bit of the pitch. Not sure how well that would stand up to some wet weather. The campsite staff were terrific and some of the most pleasant I have encountered. We had to have two cars with us but that was no problem and also had friends to visit and again no problems encountered.

The children enjoyed the outdoor play equipment where there is enough room for ball games, the indoor play room I can imagine being very popular on wetter days.

The pool is very good indeed, and ok you have to pay but it's cheaper than a swim at a leisure centre and it is very well kept. The changing facilities are good.

The shower room facilities nearest to us were very good with each one being a little shower room with toilet wash hand basin hair dryer and wonderful full length mirrors which are so often absent. A little more signage might be a good thing as I saw one confused looking camper taking his washing up into a shower room.

Overall this is a very good site and because of the terracing, the views are tremendous. A little bit of road noise from A road admittedly but certainly wouldn't put me off stopping here again.
