After ringing round several campsites demanding I book all four days over the jubilee weekend or telling me they don't accept groups of friends, I came across Mandale Campsite. The owners took my booking for 5 tents for 2 nights straight away, no questions asked, and responded quickly to emails and phone call.
Mandale campsite is in lovely Peak District countryside. It's not too big either, although we had plently of space for 5 tents. When we went for a walk through a neighbouring campsite they were packed and it looked like a festival field.
The toilets were clean and the showers were warm. Showers were paid for with coins, I used about 40-60p each time, which I didn't mind. There was no hassle from the owners, although we are not a rowdy bunch.
We needed to get a big taxi for us all to go into Bakewell on the Sunday night and the owners were very helpful ringing round to get numbers for us.
There are some great local walks, short or long. No pubs very close by but walkable in about 30-40 minutes and as we discovered, taxis are available. Bakewell and Matlock Bath and great for a visit and easy to get to in the car.
Also, Matlock has 2 mainline stations. Altogether, fantastic value for money, friendly owners and a beautiful spot.

Just arrived back from our stay at Mandale Campsite, This was our first camping trip, We planned to try this for one night, we ended up staying for three. Although quite a basic site we found the facilities to be ample for us, the showers were lovely and hot and the toilets were clean and always had loo roll!
We thought the site was really good value for money, costing us less than ten pounds a night for two people and a dog.
The owner was also very helpful when we rather stupidly charged our phones in the car and ran out the battery! he came and helped us jump start it.
We will definitely return to this site.

Was our first visit to this campsite & being a 'HOT' May bank holiday weekend. We booked the week before we went and its a good job too. The 2 large fields were full & busy but not cramped at all. The owner of the site met us on arrival and directed us to the camping fields, she was pleasant and tryed to smile but not much effort went into it! Her husband farmer, was very warm & friendly.
The fields behind the house is a little slopy, but flat near the bottom close to the toilet blocks but the to shower/toilet block was bang bang bang, on one of the nights! It is surrounded by trees, stone walls and the grass was cut nice and low.
The toilet block was very 1980s basic but very clean throughout our 3 day stay. The showers were 20p and you get plenty of hot water, at a decent pressure. There was an indoor washing-up point that was clean and tidy at all times.
A good facility is the freezer, handy for cooler bag blocks! Our neighbouring tent occupants thought it was a fridge and put their bottles of beer in it. There is a sign asking people 'NOT to put your food/drinks in the ice block freezer' but some don't take any notice of the sign and the owner just put all the food and beers outside in the sun and shouted to people to come and get it back! 'rightly so'!
The area locally is lovely, the gorgeous Lathkill Dale is but a 10min walk away, turning right out the drive though another campsite ie; public fp. And vir pretty village of Over Haddon too. Monyash is a 5min drive or 40min walk on roadside or along the dale beck public fp and we can reccomend the Bulls Head pub for great food, great ales and really nice staff. At the rear of the pub is a large village play area, perfect for the children and adults alike. I didn't see a play area on the campsite, so bear this in mind.
Mandale also have Reckoning House camping barn and Pine Lodge for hire which looked fab and open most of the year too.
Camping charges are £4. 75 pppn which is a little cheaper than most in the area but remember the shower/toilet blocks are 1980s.
All in, it's a great 'basic' campsite with all you need for your stay. No shop on site and no hook-up so be careful when taking you own needs with you. Nearest shops are in Bakewell, 10min drive away or 50min walk by verse public fp's. The village of Youlgrave is a beautiful place too & 10min drive or again you can walk by public fp and there is a pub with food, a shop and a butchers.

After visiting Bakewell for the day my wife and I and our two dogs called in last night in our vw campervan.
We stayed on the level top field which has an area of hard standing. Great views and a lovely location, plenty of quiet lanes/paths to walk the dogs.
Very peaceful at night without any loud music or noise. The toilet and shower blocks are fine.
Plenty of rubbish and recycling bins. Just remember to stock up with provisions before you have a evening drink because it's about a 4 mile round trip to the nearest shop.
A great site to get away from everything at a fantastic price.

Just spent 3 nights in this campsite and overall we had a lovely time and the owners were extremely helpful.
The location is stunning, staying in the top field, the flattest of the 3, gave beautiful views across Lathkill Dale. The grass was longer than most sites but it is a working farm and the sheep were grazing on the lower field when we were there, so can't blame the farmer for not wanting to cut it too often, and there was no shortage of space to pitch or play.
The showers and toilets were plentiful but fairly basic; of note however the showers in the standalone portable cabin were exceptionally hot and not suitable for kids. The site is generally very peaceful (no music rule in the camping field); and although we did have an issue with noise from the camping barn on the second night the owner dealt with it very well.
The surrounding area is beautiful with Lathkill Dale a short walk from the site and Monyash (excellent pub - The Bulls Head) just a 5 minute drive away.
Overall a nice site, very reasonably priced with fairly basic facilities.

An excellent site if you want peace, quiet and space. Very friendly owners. Open for BBQs, lots of clean toilets and showers (£1 for 5 minutes and hot - not warm - water. 2 good places to eat nearby, Lathkill Hotel - about 1/2 hour walk or Monyash a bit further in the opposite direction. Great walk in the Dales nearby and the Monsal Bike Trail from Bakewell. Try Holdsworth's chocolate shop by the station. Undoubtedly value for money, we will return for the Autumn colours. In summary: camping as it should be.

Just returned from 3 nights here at Mandale. Had an absolutely fabulous time - owners very helpful telling us the best spot to pitch our tent.
The top field (which is the flattest) was very busy when we arrived so decided to pitch in the second field (very sloping) but flat at the top, bottom and sides.
Pitched at the top nearest the facilities which turned out to be a good spot. There is a separate field specifically for DOE grops. The site was very quiet at night which was great with 2 children tired out from very long walks.
The toilet facilities are plentiful, situated in the middle of the 2 main fields. Only 2 showers but never had to wait. Facilities were a little dated but very clean - no hot water in the toilets. Showers were charged at £1 for 5 minutes of hot water and for hot water for washing up, 20p for 1 minute.
This said, the rate per night (less than £18 for 2+2) was very reasonable so didn't mind paying for hot water. Freezer situated in the washing up room for freezer packs etc.
With regard to the long grass, this had been cut but left in the field so you were always walking big clumps into the tent but wouldn't have commented on this maybe if I had not read the previous review regarding the long grass.
The owner very kindly loaned us his OS map for the duration of our stay as I had left mine at home! Lovely spot, quiet and fabulous walks on the doorstep.
Will definitely be returning in the not too distant future.

As first time campers we enjoyed our stay at this site had no problem finding somewhere to pitch our tent, beautiful views and close to lots of good places to visit.
I would however say that the toilets weren't very nice and the showers were very small.
It made a good base for a weekend and we would have stayed again if not for the toilets.

We have just returned from a two night stay at Mandale House.
First off, I will say that it isn't the easiest of places to find- its easy to miss the turn and there aren't any campsite signs off the mainroad so do keep a lookout.
When we arrived we booked in at reception, the owner was very friendly and she directed us to the top field away from the large groups of D of E students who were occupying the bottom and middle fields. (they were very quiet and well behaved by the way- we didn't even notice them really)
The site as a whole is quite slopey but if you choose your pitch carefully you can get a nice flat piece of ground, and can be quite sheltered too- I recommend pitching against the trees and stone wall as the site is very high up and therefore quite exposed to the elements. The pitches aren't restricted so you can spread out and have as much space as you need which is nice.
The views around the site are amazing, truly breathtaking and it is so peaceful, the only sounds to be heard of cows and sheep- perfect!
There are plenty of toilets and showers, basic and a little shabby but quite clean. Hot water for showers and for pot washing is charged at 20p per minute. There is a freezer for ice blocks in the potwashing area and bins are provided for recycling too.
The area is great for walks and the site is only a short drive away from Bakewell town centre for shops and pubs etc.
We absolutely loved Mandale House and the only criticism we could possibly have is that the grass was a little too long which was a pain as it rained quite heavily during our stay so it was messy around our shoes and trousers. BUT that is us picking fault because really- the site is perfect, its not the place for those wanting shops, parks, clubhouses etc but for a quiet and relaxing break in beautiful surroundings then it is perfect!
We have already booked to go again in a few weeks!

We have just returned from an over night stay at this campsite to try out our new VW camper van.
The site was easy to find. We didn't book before arriving. There were three fields, the bottom field only being available to DofE groups and the top field being the flattest open to general campers.
We arrived with only three other campers in the top field and left on a gentle walk round Lachkill dale. (It was a beautiful walk and one I would absolutely recommend). We finished in the local village in the Lachkill hotel for a well deserved drink of mixed fruit cider. The hotel also does reasonably priced food. Which allows well behaved dogs in the bar area.
When we returned to the campsite it was full with D of E groups. Now my husband and I have both done D of E and do encourage young people to do it. However with a dedicated flat field for D of E we did think it a bit strange to have them mixed in with the other campers. However I must say they were well behaved after a good telling off by one of the teachers and were silent after about 10:30pm. The school should be proud of such a big group of children.
The toilet blocks were clean and the showers were warm accepting both 20p's and £1 coins (20p per min. )
There were three blocks of toilets in between both the main two fields and in peak season I would expect to cater for a full campsite. They were nothing special but had basic amenities and were clean and tidy.
The site offered recycling facilities. The only small down side to this site it that there is no on site or local shop so make sure you stop off on the way. I must say that for £4. 75 per person I thought this site was very good value for money.
