No deposit to pay upfront so easy to cancel if the weather is poor. We had a warm welcome on the bank holiday, with a choice of 2 fields to pitch in 1 of which does slope away but all the same plenty of room and not crammed in.

Lots of toilets between the 2 fields with pot washing etc. Limited number of showers and the water starts going and your time starts running when the money is put into the meter located up the room. The owner however did let us stay as long as we liked on the monday (very Nice bloke but does rummage around the bins, showers early 7am in morning).

Excellent value for money as paid per head unless you have a lot of kids then is expensive.

Excellent stay, nice site, lots nearby, certainly worth a look.

 - A quite large, open site- two spacious fields, which I'd think get full in peak season.

- It's situated on the hilltop above Lathkill Dale- a beautifully forested steep gorge with a crystal clear stream, there are footpaths down to it.

- £4.50 per person per night, so it's good value!

- The toilets and showers were clean, but I'd imagine it gets very busy in peak season.

- The site was clean and quiet, pitch up where you like, the site is flat too.

- There is a pub about 40 mins walk along the road, at Over Haddon- the Lathkil Hotel. There was a pub quiz on in the tiny, rustic room. They were all locals but they made us feel welcome even when we came last in the quiz and won the booby prize!

- Mandale Campsite is a working farm with chickens running around and sheep in the fields, which was lovely.

- The area is wonderful for hiking and exploring in the tranquil wilderness surrounding you.

I spent just one night at Mandale Farm at the end of the school summer holidays with my younger son. We rang up on spec Friday morning and within ninety minutes had driven there, paid, chosen a pitch and were pitching our tent. Due to our short stay I cannot give a particularly in-depth review but, hopefully, the following will be of some use.

The campsite is about 3.5miles miles from Bakewell which itself is not large, so the campsite is quiet and has a delightfully remote feeling about it. It’s very much the sort of site I like: family-run, not overly commercial, has a few essential facilities (showers, toilets and washing up) and nothing else (no bar, no playground, etc.). After being warmly greeted and paying what I thought to be a reasonable fee for our stay we were free to choose our own pitch – it was quiet and we were only the third group on two fairly large fields. The second field (I assume that this is the “family field”) is the more level of the two (even so, few of the pitches are completely level) and had the better views but is also more exposed to the winds; and it can be windy here! The first field has relatively few useable pitches as much of it is on a significant slope. This did, however, mean that there was plenty of space for the kids to go and play without the risk of bumping into tents or getting under the feet of the grownups. Given that the wind was up we chose to pitch on the first field in the lee of tall trees separating the two fields.

The site’s remote location means that there is little light pollution at night and little if any noise. With one exception: the campsite is on one of the distant flight-paths for (I presume) Manchester Airport and, after my son woke me up at about 5am because he wanted to go to the toilet, I struggled to get back to sleep and was aware of the aeroplanes overhead. They weren’t low or making a booming noise and I doubt that they would have woken me without my son helping that cause, but I was aware of them. Looking at the map suggests that there are plenty of walks in what is a pretty area and a group of DofE explorers arrived early evening in the middle of a two or three day hike.

The toilet and shower facilities are functional and adequate but hardly the last word in luxuriousness – which is fine by me. There are two sinks for washing up but there is only cold water and they are outside and exposed with no roof or shelter. As a result I had to ferry pans of hot water to the sink from our pitch and, on more than one occasion, got wet from the rain. I think that the site should at least look at putting some form of simple shelter over the sinks; I can’t imagine that would be too much of an expense.

As always I asked my co-camper what he thought of the campsite. He appreciated the views (not bad for a seven year old boy!) and the space to play. I too liked the site. The space for the kids to go and play was a blessed relief after the experience of two other camps that season and the rates were very reasonable. I’m sure that we will camp again at Mandale and for longer than just one night.

We spent a weekend at this site in some terrible weather! Most tents had pitched up against the hedge which did a great job at buffering the wind.

The field is very large and on a gentle slope. You choose where to pitch and there was plenty of room for everyone.

The site is in a beautiful spot, views are magnificent.

Owners very friendly and helpful.

The toilets/ showers are very are basic but clean and warm, with toilet paper provided. My only criticism would be that there is no electrical point to use a hairdryer.

No hot water at the pot washing sinks was a bit of a bind, and also the fact that the area is not sheltered, so we ended up washing pots in the rain in freezing cold water.

Overall, a good site for the price charged (Which I can't remember precisely how much it was, but I paid £6.50 for one adult, one child per night.)

Lots to do in the area, we cycled on Tissington trail on one day of our stay and visited Chatsworth on another.

Great family site with good clean shower and toilet facilities. Lovely views from camping field and well positioned for walks and shopping in Bakewell etc. Was fully booked when we were there and it was far from overcrowded compared to some campsites we have been on at this time of year. Had a lovely relaxed atmosphere would definitely visit again and would recommend it.

Mandale was a brilliant choice of campsite, the owners were so nice and informative of the surrounding area. There were clean toilets and showers. The field had short grass so easier for us to pitch the tent. There was a really nice gorge walk not far from the site. Overall we would definitely recommend this site.

There is a 10-15minute walk to the pub in the village with wonderful views a tad expensive for food, but worth a stop for a drink and look at the view.Only a short drive from Bakewell which is lovely to visit.

Good customer service on booking and I also emailed for a weather check on the morning we were due to arrive as forecasts looked terrible and received a prompt, honest reply. I had booked for two nights but when we arrived we were allowed to just pay for one in case weather was bad and we went home early (which we did because it did get very wet) that was really appreciated.

We pitched in the family field and there were only about 8 other tents there so we had loads of room and could pick where we wanted to put the tent up. No noise from any of the other campers but the sheep in the next field made up for that at dawn, much to the amusement of my two children :)

Showers and Toilets were really clean.

Really good point about the site is it provides recycling facilities - more sites should provide this as we usually have lots of bottles to get rid of on a morning, so that was a plus.

Unfortunately the weather turned foul minutes after we pitched the tent and so we didn't get to appreciate the surrounding area.

We visited Mandale as a large group of couples and two Families with Children. We cheated a bit by booking into the Camping Barn situated at the edge of the Northern Camp field.

As we stayed in the Camping Barn I can't comment on the Camp facilities although they looks generally clean and modern as we walked past.

The Camping Barn was great though. You have to book the entire barn for weekend stays which I understand is £85 per night but considering the barn will sleep 12 the price represents good value for money.

The barn is spread over two floors and heated throughout.

Ground floor.

Kitchen - A good size providing, Gas Hob, Microwave, Toaster and Kettle. On the downside their is no oven however, there are plenty of pots/pans, plates crockery etc for your use also.

Dining Area is large and will seat 12

A Bathroom including shower, wc and sink is on the ground floor which is kept clean. The water pressure for the shower could be better but the water is nice and hot.

1st Floor

There are two bedrooms both including 3 bunkbeds and enough spare room for a couple of travel cots. The books are in good condition with mattresses provided.

Outside the barn is a little paved yard which is ideal for BBQs - you'll have to bring your own though as no BBQ is provided.

All in all a great Camping Barn well worth booking out if you have a large party but also work a stay if your walking the peaks and don't want to lug a tent around with you and don't mind sharing.

Mandale Farm was easy to find, although the entrance to the camp site was a little confusing -(make sure you take the driveway on the right marked 'Camping Barn,' as the one on the left marked 'Mandale House' leads only to the B&B.

The general atmosphere of the site was very relaxed, with only a few basic rules posted, forbidding radios/music and camp fires (BBQs excepted). Had the rule been extended to include loud children after 10pm that would have been even better!

Pitches were not assigned: we were just instructed to set up wherever we liked and could find space. Even though this was a sunny June weekend, and the site was almost full, we still found plenty of room to pitch our tent within a good distance of other campers. The ground was soft and level, and the spot sheltered by trees and a dry stone wall.

The toilet facilities were clean, with well-stocked levels of soft loo paper. Our only wish was for soap, and paper towells or a hand drier, but that's a very minor point. The outside dish washing area was adequate and clean (and the lack of hot water there could be simply addressed if we carried hot water in a bowl a few feet from the shower block to the dish sinks).

The rubbish area accommodated several recycling bins which were regularly emptied, and the area was kept clean at all times.

The owners, Mr and Mrs Finney, were very friendly, and their waggy-tailed sheep dog Meg regularly made the rounds to greet each new arrival on the field.

The site was too far from any towns or villages for us to be able to walk to a pub, or go out for a meal, but we bought our own drinks to the site, and enjoyed cooking dinner on our camp stove. It was great to have the additional option of a bacon and egg butty for breakfast, made for us by Mrs Finney at the farm house (£2 each, and served between 8-9am).

The only thing which spoiled our stay was the nuisance posed by the two families who arrived the day after us, who let their noisy children play football near our tent from the moment they got up in the morning until the last glimmer of daylight had disappeared. The balls often hit parked cars, and the children made no apologies to the vehicles' owners for this.

Having gone to the countryside partly to get away from loud kids who constantly kick footballs around outside our house, this was a source of irritation to us, and made us wish that the site prohibited ball games close to tents, as is the case in many other sites. The provision of a 'Family Field,' or a separate play area for kids would have been ideal.

That said, we had a lovely time at this site, and what the location lacks in convenient proximity to pubs and shops, it more than makes up for in its placing in the beautiful Lathkill Dale, which is just a few minutes' walk away down a picturesque lane. We will definitely be returning.

Just enjoyed our first mid-week break in out new tent.

Arriving at 4pm in the evening we were made very welcome and shown the facilities, we were free to choose our own spot.

The toilets were clean and tidy (with loo paper - always a camping bonus) and the showers were roomy and the perfect temperature. There were not many campers during the week so we spent most of our time with the run of the facilities, we had a small motorhome for company one night and a small tent on another night.

There was always somebody about the farm should you need anything.

Washing up facilities were adequate provided that you took a kettle of hot water to help things along and an extra top up from the bathroom sinks. Once again everything was kept clean and tidy.

A few groups of D. Of E kids arrived on our last evening, but after the initial squeals etc. Which were to be expected everything was quiet by 10pm.

The surrounding area is wonderful, for a good walk I would recommend taking a right out of the yard and walking down to Mill Farm (on the left) then follow the footpath down the hillside and arrive at the river, you can follow the path along the riverside but don't get too carried away as it can be quite a long walk back !

If you want to try some local food we recommend the Pizza Takeaway in Bakewell, or to cook yourself try the Marinated Pork Steaks from Critchlows Farm Shop, delicious and tender !

Although there are many small local farms and villages, don't be afraid to hop in the car to visit somewhere else, the A515 (to Buxton) is easily accessible as is the A6 (to Matlock).
