We spent a night here in Half Term and were disappointed. I was horrified to discover that we were going to be charged £24 for one night. This was with hook up, but added to the expense, was 50p per shower! Two showers each added another £2 so £26 per night for a campervan. The spaces were cramped and on arrival our booked pitch was full!.

The lady in reception was very polite, it was very busy and she sorted out the double booking quickly.

The showers and toilets were adequate, but not very clean and despite there being a new small block as well as the old one, we discovered that it was locked in the morning.

The location of the site is good, an easy walk to St Davids and Porth Clais is very beautiful.
Management response: Dear Pansy Potter

You KNEW the price structure when you made your booking, so why "horrified"; you were 2 adults and one dog in a campervan for £20 a night and £4 for the electric hook up? Our prices are the same as adjacent campsites at Whitsun (high season) and these only accept 7 night bookings.

Your allocated electric hook up had been accidentally taken and to compensate we allowed you an extra half days stay free of charge.

If our toilet facilities were "not very clean" why did you have two showers EACH for a one night stay? We pride ourselves on the cleanliness of these facilities. The small block was closed in the very early morning for cleaning; the notice on the door asked you to please use the other block.

Any complaints reported at the time would have been investigated immediately.

Kind regards
Porthclais

We stayed here for 6 nights and found it a wonderful base for one-day coast walks. The site itself is right on the coast, so access to the coast path is excellent. There are also regular buses from the port (5 minute walk) where you can take them to go to St Justinians, Whitesands Bay, Solva, St Davids, and further if you want.

The site itself is very well equipped (toilets, showers) and clean - though we did find the washing up basins to be a bit exposed (there was a cold wind blowing for a couple of days) and they could benefit from some form of wind protection.

Went three years ago and loved it. Going back 2 August 2015 and can't wait. Kids loved it. Best campsite ever been to. Magic. Views were stunning.

Fab icecream in town. Querky supermarket in town but has all the essentials. Use Tesco vouchers at nearby theme park so that's free!

Jet boat trips nearby too.

If you want SPACE, this is for you.

We had trouble finding availability over Jubilee weekend so went for Porthclais, which had really good reviews, an impressive 9/10.

What we found when we arrived though was only 2 fields open (not sure if there are more)so everyone fairly squished in. The views were fine if you were lucky with your spot down on the bottom field, but you couldn't get much of a sea view from most of the 2 fields.

There are 2 toilet blocks with ample toilets but only 2 showers in each, didn't have to wait long. We're not vastly experienced campers but this is the first site we've been to where you had to pay to use the shower and the blocks themselves were lacking in space, sinks and showers - at least for the size of the site. There are six washing up sinks.

While the site is walk able to St Davids and a couple of the coast path points of interest. There is no playground or communal play space so it didn't feel as if it were a place you could really hang around and while away the hours while the kids went off and played and made friends.

There was just something a little half baked and lacking in thought about it. The little touches make a big difference when camping, and those little touches don't cost much.
Management response: Joeyf76 says that we have only 2 showers per block. THIS IS INCORRECT. There are 10 showers, all new. We decided to make a charge of 50p for a shower as we received so many complaints that thoughtless people stayed in the showers for half an hour knowing that there was a queue outside. This has solved the problem and guests no longer have to queue for a shower.

We have regularly stayed here, we like the site particularly out of season when it is nice and quiet and you can have the majority of the site to yourself.

The facilities are quite basic, with portable loos/showers brought in for the hi-season with free showers, the original showers block require 20p for the showers. You can get tokens for an electric point in them too for hair dryers/straighteners (apparently they are essential for camping!?!)

The campsite sits on the coastal path with great views and just above the pretty port. St Davids is a 20-30minute walk away.

The staff are friendly although driving the old car around at 8AM to check tickets is a little annoying when your still sleeping in the tent.

It is around £7per person per night for the tent, so good value, but it is mainly for the stunning views that we stay here, although in Pembrokeshire great views come traditionally with great wind!

We've just returned from Porthclais having spent a fortnight there (last two weeks in August). It was literally a holiday of two halves.

The site is situated a 20 minute walk from the cathedral city of St Davids (more a big village!). Here you'll find several pubs and restaurants which all serve decent food, average price for main courses being round about the 8 or 9 pounds mark.

The Ship Inn, a short drive away in Solva proved much better value both for food and drinks with main course being on average a fiver and puddings £2. 95 - it was really good food as well! There is a small supermarket in town too which has most things you will need.

Anyway back to the site. Situation is right on the edge of the Pembrokeshire Coastal path offering miles of stunning scenery and walks in either direction. Porthclais harbour is right at the side of the site and is very pretty and great for crabbing as our kids found out!

The site itself consists of 3 or four very large fields which all have level bits and a few slopy areas. The ground we found to be rocky in places which bent a few pegs but nothing major.

For the most part of our stay, the toilets and showers were very good. They were cleaned very regularly and were more than adequate. Up until the bank holiday weekend, there were absolutely no problems with noise or the toilets/showers being overcrowded. Unfortunately, that changed as the weekend arrived. It was more akin to Glastonbury with the number of tents on the site. This had the knock on effect of long queues for the showers and due to constant use, the showers were cold.

There were also occasional bouts of loud music and unruly behaviour late at night but in view of the number of campers I suppose it was relatively quiet

On balance, the last few days did spoil things a bit but we would return just making sure we avoided the bank holiday weekends.

In terms of value for money, the site was very good. If you're up for 'extreme' sports, coasteering is a must. We used Celtic Quest Coasteering and can't fault them. There are loads of beaches up and down the coast.

Newgale was excellent for watersports and all manner of equipment could be hired from the surf shop (wetsuits, kayaks, surf boards, etc). It is a huge sandy beach and not at all overcrowded. Free parking can be had behind the surf shop - otherwise it's £2/day further up the beach. Whitesands is a smaller sandy beach but we found it very busy - the parking is also expensive by welsh standards (£4/day).

Tenby is an hour away and is a very picturesque town with some nice shops and a great beach.

Whilst we were there the weather was ok. We did notice that there was a constant wind on the site so it pays to pitch your tent against one of the hedges to get a bit of shelter.
Management response: The water in the showers did not run cold because of numbers of people but was only cold for an hour on Bank Holiday Sunday Morning because of low water pressure from Welsh Water! This has been remedied and we now only have pumped electric showers.

Visited in August 2011, 4 large fields and fairly full with large family tents, including many surf boards and bicycles in evidence for exploring the area:

A stunning location but definitely peg down your tent well, the winds are pretty constant as you are fairly high and exposed on the cliffs! Luckily, the space we found was actually one of the more sheltered spots during our visit on the East field, slightly down a slope.

Great area for the children to run around (and great resulting photos with the beautiful scenery!).

Facilities very clean, small shop on site useful too. Would go back again (but not in a gale!).

We stayed here visiting friends in South Wales. We chose the site as the best located, although reviews we read were mixed. Prices were very reasonable, so we gave it a go.

We were not disappointed. The views from our pitch were stunning.

The site was basic, granted - though the owners had rented a mobile shower and toilet block, which brought the total of toilets and showers to four each for ladies and gents. Some might say this is too few for a site as big as this, but I rarely had to wait too long. A reasonable little shop, with fresh pastries and Welsh cakes.

The site was indeed very well located. A short walk to the beautiful little harbour at Porthclais. Great crabbing to be had here.

A nice walk straight from the site into St Davids. Eat at the Bishops Rock pub (I think the name is right. ). Expensive fish and chips at the Fish & Chip shop set well back from the road.

Anyway, back to the site: The only downside was the narrow road serving as entry to and exit from the site. I'd hate to see two caravans battling for right of way here. But never did during our stay. There's a perfectly good passing point halfway along.

There's plenty of room for kids to run around, or cycle, though no actual kiddies play ground/equipment.

We had one night of very strong winds - it'd pay to have a good selection of pegs and maybe some extra guy lines. And don't leave the windbreaks at home like we did.

All in all, a beautifully located site, with adequate facilities. Well worth the 7-8 hours journey time from Kent.

Review from mum and 11 yr old and her friend. Fantastic, only 2 mins walk to the small beach, great for exploring and snorkelling.

Campsite was three open fields, large group of boys one night and girls next night kept us awake. Didn't mix with the other children on the site.

Owners not putting pressure on us to leave next day. Left late afternoon

Only downfall, charged £1. 00 per bed to inflate. .

No other complaints and will visit regularly even though only 20 mins from home

We had a fantastic holiday at this campsite as the area is very beautiful. St Davids and Solva are very picturesque and I took a lot of photos. There are many fabulous beaches all the way from Solva to Fishguard.

The site was not full when we were there. All the facilities were perfectly adequate and very clean.

We stayed on the top field so did not see the best views, but lower down the views are truly outstanding.

It is therefore with some regret that I have to point out that it can be a very windy site and normal tunnel tents can be damaged, once the gusts reach 60 knots. Even though our tent withstood these gusts it was windy all the time we were there and so was not as peaceful as camping can be.
