We camped here for two nights. We are a retired couple with a dog. This is a first class site and we shall certainly return. It is the nicest site I have stayed at.
There are a number of fields used. One for the caravans, one for pods and powered sites and so on. The facilities are excellent. It has plenty showers and toilets. There is a microwave, several fridges, a deep freezer, kettle and toaster. The proprietors are welcoming and helpful. It is walking distance to Kirkoswald which is a delightful village with two pubs.

Our group stayed at Mains Farm for the first time to allow us to visit the nearby Kirkoswald Beer festival, and even though we are relatively local ( Carlisle ) found it to be excellent and will certainly return. The owners were always totally help and the facilities were first class without being over the top. A super site for cyclists, simply depart the Settle Carlisle line at Lazonby, head over the river Eden and you are just a mile or so from the site.

A lovely site which deserves all the good reviews it has received. Robert and Julie are indeed very welcoming and can't do enough for you.
We are a family of five who stayed over the Easter weekend and were treated to some fantastic weather which brings out the best in the area.
The site has good facilities (we were nearest the orchard and used the kettle, microwave, toilets and showers there. We found them to be clean, well stocked and Robert and Julie put up notices with pub recommendations, leaflets with walks marked out etc.
We have a dog and made use of some pleasant walks along the river where there are benches if you want to take the views in for a bit longer. I would imagine anglers would find it a pretty useful location as our tent was less than 5 minutes walk from the river.
The site was very quiet although as a working farm you have to expect the usual noises but we did not find that in the least bit off-putting. Indeed the children particularly enjoyed visiting the newborn lambs!
The site is certainly right away from busy roads and you really feel out in the sticks. However, we are keen walkers and a lot of lovely routes near Ullswater such as Helvellyn were no more than 40 minutes away. There is also a Co-op in a nearby village and a Morrisons at Penrith which is only 15 minutes away by car. Cyclists would love it, anglers, walkers. I challenge anyone not to enjoy what this site and the wider area has to offer!
Robert will supply some firewood for £5 per bucket if people have a fire basket which we took up the option on.

Robert and Julie run a great little campsite, that's right little. It is wonderful, not sprawling or inpersonal. I counted 17 pitches for caravans and motor homes, 2 tent fields (including a 3 camping pods and a bunk house. We used the pitches turning up for 3 nights in a VW camper. Julie directed us to our pitch and showed us the facilities. The bunkhouse seemed very popular with C2C cyclists, there were around a dozen over the weekend. The toilet and shower facilities were fine with piping hot water and never a wait. We made use of the sink in the laundry area to wash our dishes every morning. There was a washing machine and tumble dryer which we did not make use (although if we had been there longer probably would have). There was also a well appointed kitchen with cooker and oven. When I booked, Julie kindly gave me the number of the Featherston Arms in Kirksowald and advised that we would be better booking for a table especially on a weekend as it fills up quick. Food was fab and his nibs did enjoy the local Tirril ale. We hope to return to Mains Farm again and enjoy their site again. The Henderson 3 nights. X

This is a beautiful camp site for walks and scenery. It's made great by Robert and Julie who run the site and the farm. Nothing was to much trouble and they always had a door open if you had a question!
The showers were warm and clean we both said they were best of any camp site!
We would highly recommend this campsite.

We tend to opt for campsites that have good recommendations via this website and Mains Farm definitely lived up to expectations.
Robert and Julie were very helpful and welcoming. We were pitched on a powered site in the Orchard, a quiet, picturesque spot next to the toilets, showers and washing up facilities (which are located in a converted barn). These were clean with plenty of free hot water. There was fresh soap in the toilets and the hand towels were changed regularly.
The added bonus was the kettle, toaster, fridge and microwave in the barn, which are free for all campers to use.
The site is safe for the kids to play and explore (cars are parked away from the pitches) and there is a small enclosed playground (I would say suitable for children 4+). The site also allows camp fires and you can buy a 'starter' pack of logs from the farmhouse.
Locally, we would recommend a visit to the Mill cafe at Little Salkeld, the stone circles (Long Meg and her Sisters) and the community open air swimming pool at Lazobny.
The Co-op at Lazonby is well stocked (lovely local sausages and burgers) and we also ate out one night at the Fetherstone Arms in Kirkoswald which is about a mile from the campsite. The food was good (huge portions), but you do need to book in advance.
Overall we can definitely recommend this campsite and will be returning again!

Very friendly and helpful owners campsite. No problems with the media. We are very happy to stay at this a campsite and will be recommended this place. Very nice area for walking with flowing river. A lot of free space around their place of stay. You can see some all interesting places in other cities in 4 days.

I love this site. My friends and I have been here a few times since discovering it 3 yrs ago. Robert and Julie are helpful and friendly owners. The site is part of a working sheep farm (but that doesn't intrude on your holiday) and there are also bunkhouses which are mainly used by C2C cyclists, the farm is pretty red stone buildings typical of the area. There are toilets, showers, electric plug sockets, small fridge, microwave, toaster, kettle, in a converted barn area and are kept clean. There are a few local walks including an 8. 6km walk via Lacey's Caves, Little Salkeld (recommend the Mill cafe there) and Long Meg and her Sisters (stone circle). These walk instructions have been thoughtfully printed out and laminated by the owners. There are wonderful views every way you look and you may be next to a field of sheep but these were moved to a further away field during our last stay (and we missed them!). I don't have children and prefer quiet sites, although this site has expanded since my first visit, it now has an extra camp field which includes 3 wooden camping pods and there is also a small children's playground but it is still usually a lovely relaxing site even when busy (although I do prefer it mid season). Robert also hires out metal fire braziers with wooden logs and sells disposable bbq's. There are 2 nice pubs with great food approx 15 mins walk away (although you can ask Robert to give you a lift, he has a minibus for the C2C side of the business). Lazonby village is a short drive away with a small community run outdoor pool, 2 pubs and a reasonable sized co-op (I've also seen a fish and chip van there parked nr the river just before the bridge). If you want a picturesque, relaxing site just outside of the hussle and bussle of the Lake District I can thoroughly recommend this one.

We had a great time on this site; it was our 2nd visit. The situation of this site is beautiful and the owners The owners are very helpful. We were in the caravan field, although there are several different areas, so there is plenty of space. The facilities are all housed in old farm buildings, so a bit rough and ready compared to some sites, but full of character. The loos and showers were always clean with plenty of hot water. There are kitchen areas as well for campers to use. We cycled a couple of days, (last year we did the C2C, and this year we just created our own routes in the area. ) On another day we walked to Long Meg (a stone circle) and then visited the outdoor swimming pool at Lazonby. There is a Co-Op in Lazonby, which is a good size, as well as a gallery of some description which we tried to visit, but could not get past the barking aggressive dog!
I would definitely recommend this site.

What a beautiful site and the sound of sheep, cows and birds was all we could usually hear - we had a wonderful time!
The owners are very helpful and we saw them once or twice a day but we knew we could find them if we needed too, which we did when our electricity didn't work one night. We are not sure what the problem was but Robert was very helpful when we saw him in the morning and gave us another electricity cable and deducted £5 from our bill. We possibly wouldn't have had the issue if we had had our electricity plugged into a 3 phase supply; our supply came on a standard extension cable through a window in the ladies' shower corridor.
The toilets were clean and there was a clean hand towel provided for each sink at least once a day. However, the mirrors are positioned too high up (if you are 5ft 3 or under). I could only see my fringe but, hey, we were camping so I wasn't worried! My only (minor) gripe is that the shower cubicles could have been cleaner - there was always dried grass in the changing part of the shower room, though the showers themselves were always clean and there was always plenty of hot (free) water. The washing up facilities were what was required. The owner had left out some homemade marmalade that you could buy.
Our pitch (just outside the shower block) was slightly sloped, which had amazing views but you may need to use the stone slabs that rest against the farm wall to prop up your table.
There is a fabulous local farm shop (Cranstons) and food and wine shop (Booths) in Penrith. We had a lovely meal at Fetherston Arms in Kirkoswald but you will need to book as it is so popular.
The site is about 1. 5 hours from Coniston Water so, if you are going there, you should plan for that - we tried various ways of getting there including going down the M6 to J36 but that took even longer. Coniston Water Boating Centre hires out electric bikes, which we pre-booked - a great way of exploring the area. We stopped for a fresh and tasty lunch at a tea shop on the other side of the lake.
All in all, a glorious campsite and we would thoroughly recommend it for a quiet relaxing break.
