We have just returned from a week at this site and can only describe it as the best and most wonderful relaxing week we have ever had. Julie & Robert are the owners of this fantastic farm and they have put so much thought into the different requirements of caravanners, tenters and the C2C cyclists.
We had so much space between us, and there were never more than 10 caravans in the whole field at any one time. One tap and electric box between 2 vans so no long walks for water !
The whole area is very scenic and the walk down to the river and across to Laceys caves is well worth doing.
The Fetherstone Arms in Kirkoswald also come highly recommended for their steak night on a Monday and if you can manage another huge meal, pie night on a Thursday !

When we first visited Mains Farm it was just a 5 caravan club site and perfect for us, but since then has grown beyond belief now comprising a larger commercial site, bunk houses, and a camping site. the club site being moved to a field that is along way from the facilities,. having said that the site is on the C to C and therefore will always be a busy but sadly not for us.

We only stayed here overnight as I was catching up with an old school friend who I haven't seen for over 35 years. She lives in Kirkoswold.
We actually would have liked to stay longer. The site is in a beautiful position with beautiful scenery all around.
The owners were very friendly and Julie showed me all around the site. They have built new toilet/shower blocks and also have bunk houses for rent.
The showers were very big and clean. Kirkoswold is around a 15 minute walk and has 2 pubs and a small shop.
Phone, internet and TV reception were good.

The biggest asset to this site is the owners! They are attentive and friendly, many thanks to them both for making us so welcome.
As a family of two adults and three children (6, 4 and 3months) we were looking for somewhere family friendly - well this is it! They loved the walks, paddling in the river and the 'secret hammock'. There are so many places to explore.
We also had a cyclist and a biker in our party, the site is set up perfectly for both. We aim to return with the bikes on another occasion.
We stayed Monday-Friday and so relied on the sites amenities. The toilets and washing up facilities were clean and never overcrowded. There was plenty of hot water in the main block, and it is possible for a family of children to fit into the showers!
There is a kitchen with cooker, kettle and microwave as well as a number of kitchen utensils (we borrowed the colander!). There is also a communal fridge which was ideal for milk - especially as the weather was so lovely.
Locally we visited the Watermill, which was fascinating to the children, we watched the wheel, went inside where the miller showed us the flour being ground, bought our own bag and made bread on our return home. To eat there is expensive though (£4. 80 for children's beans on toast!) We also went to the Shepherd's Inn at Melmerby, where the food and atmosphere was great.
Finally it was lovely to be in a site which was busy but not overcrowded, we were made to feel like guests rather than customers. Both Robert and Julie remembered all our names and were great with the children.

Up there with best sites I ever stayed in!Brilliant campsite in nice locale. Very friendly and helpful owners. Very child friendly and safe. I do not think I seen a single sign with rules and regs, which surprisingly did not result in the onset of chaos.
The site is divided into 4 separate areas.
A caravan field (no statics), a tent field, bunkhouses around the farmyard and a small walled orchard/kitchen garden area. The tent areas were distinctly separate from the caravan area, the tent field has a capacity for around 12 tents accommodated in very large pitches.
The orchard had space for around 5 tents and had an exclusive feel to it. The toilet and shower facilities were in excellent order, clean, modern and never really overcrowded.
There were also indoor kitchen facilities, with microwave, cooker and fridge. A barn was available to use should the weather become inclement, fortunately the weather was beautiful when we were there!
Homemade Jams and chutney available to buy, never got to try them though. Bike hire was available and I also believe there was transport to local villages arranged by the owner.
The site is located just on the outside of Kirkoswald, a very picturesque village. The neighbouring village of lazonby seemed to have better facilities including an outdoor swimming pool, cash machine and small supermarkert
Fires were allowed on site as long as they were raised from the ground. The owners hall could also set up a fire for you beside the river(which is easily accessible from the site) for a charge of £10.
If I were to think of any downsides to this place it would be that the camp field slopes a bit and that the hot water boiler for dishwashing was not working, however, there was another kitchen sink with plentiful hot water next to the toilets/shower block.
The owners knew about this though and are going to replace it. However, these small criticisms are overshadowed by the good things about this wonderful site, which I believe is a reflection of the owners personalities and all for a very reasonable £15 quid per night.

My partner and I came to Mains Farm as we'd bought a tent and I'd never been camping before and the reviews were to a high standard.
I didn't know what to expect but I was so excited when I saw the views, beautiful!
We were met by Robert the farmer who showed us where everything was, very clean showers it was like home from home, I was delighted. His wife Julie makes her homemade marmalade and chutney, it was gorgeous,
The first night we visited the local pub 'the Featherstone Arms' we ordered two lovely steaks as it was Steak night, beautiful food.
We visited Penrith the following day (only ten mins drive), we arrived back at the farm and sunbathed as where we pitched our tent was a total suntrap.
I didn't want to go home as it was so beautiful, but we will definitely return soon, very nice helpful people they were, a gorgeous experience for us both.

Superb site, Owners were great very helpful and always willing to help. Site was in perfect condition very spacious with water and hook ups at every pitch, plenty of space for the children to play.
Toilets and showers were immaculate with plenty of free hot water. Would recommend this site,as well as Julies home made preserves. The nearest take aways are in Penrith,
There are two Pubs that serve meals in Kirk Oswald but the opening times are very vague. The Co-OP in Lazonby is well stocked and carries everything you could need during your stay.
We intend returning next year.

First class site great getaway site very peaceful and stunning views. Toilets and showers spot on very spacious pitches and staff great.
Village about a mile away no shops but two good pubs. Rob and julie work the farm and the park so hats off to them and there daughter. Fifty two pounds for four nights can;t be bad.
Only bad points is the bridge as you enter kirkoswald should have traffic lights I got stuck on top with other caravans behind and not much for older kids on the park.
Good walks from site along the river visited laceys cave about five mile round walk. Plenty of wildlife buzzards owls and the odd sheep getting on the site.
The two pubs in the village serve good food and ale thursday is pie night and is good value. Co-op in lazonby sell most things or penrith about 9 miles away overall great site.

We stayed at Mains Farm while doing the C2C cycle route, and also used their cycle & baggage transfer service, all went without a hitch.
Rob & Julie are great people, Superb welcome and couldn't be more helpful, without any fuss.
Camp site is fab, and the bunk house will be a great addition to the facilities.
Can't recommend it highly enough and I'm sure we'll be back.

Decided to have a weekend away at a 'local' campsite so that the mother in law could try out her new tent and we could make sure the awning hadn't been eaten over the winter. Decided on Mains Farm as it was only an hour away from home and because of the positive reviews.
The owners were very friendly and welcoming, the facilities are lovely and the homemade marmalade is gorgeous (so's the pear chutney!). The hook ups are well spaced allowing generous pitches and there are taps between the pitches too.
We will definitely return to this site and recommend it highly to anyone who wants a quiet, friendly site.
