As part of a group of 6 adults and 18 children (the Bambi group), We probably had the best camping experience of our lives at Mains.
This was partly due to the fact that we were 'housed' separately to the other campers, in the orchard, which apparently is the way they keep everyone satisfied (by either putting the campers with children all in the orchard, or all in the main field and everyone else in the orchard).
We were hosted by the legendary Robert and Julie.
Robert is one of the most pleasant and laid-back people I've met. He's up early in the morning and runs 3 businesses, yet he's always got loads of time to chat and to give advice. Julie's also full of fun.
The facilities were decent and we share the views of the other reviewers about them. Apparently next time we visit there will be an additional 4 showers and 6 toilets and possibly a family bathroom, The site is constantly looking to improve and upgrade.
There is a lot of wildlife around including a resident barn owl which makes interesting noises at night. Lots of sheep as well because it's a lamb farm.
The site is within striking distance of the Lakes which is why we chose it. We climbed Catbells and were struck by the beauty, gradient is a bit tough at first. Next day we did the hop on hop off steamers on Derwent Water.
We'll be back.

We have just spent 6 nights at Mains Farm with our three children. We had a pitch in the Orchard which felt like our own private campsite. The owners were exceptionally helpful and pleasant. They couldn't have done more to help. They made us feel very welcome indeed. This is the best campsite we have stayed on.
The play area was excellent and our children spent a long time playing on it. There were super walks along the river and the sheep always provided a lot of interest. The views from the pitch were outstanding.
The facilities were immaculate and there was never a queue. There was always plenty of hot water. And the electric hookup greatly appreciated. The communal kitchen was very welcome especially the use of the fridge! Our family visited and made excellent use of the Bunkhouse overnight which they enjoyed greatly.
The surrounding area was beautiful with plenty to see and do. The outdoor swimming pool in Lazonby a great hit with all of us and the drive into the Lake District scenic and interesting.
My husband is now planning doing the C2C and will certainly be back soon!

It was the first time we visited this campsite and were very impressed. The owners were very friendly and very helpful. The pitch sizes were good.
The washrooms and facilities were immaculate, even having a kitchen with oven and microwave.
The site is located in a lovely village with two very friendly pubs with Robert even offering to give a lift to the pub if needed. There are some very good walks around the site, some of which the owners have mapped out.
Penrith is only 10 mins away and has everything to offer, even a go outdoors. We were very happy with the site and everything it offered.
We will be back and hope it is still the same.

We really enjoyed a week at the farm right in the arms of Nature. Bats and owls and rabbits and sheep.
The toilets and showers were definitely dated, but Robert was talking about putting in new facilities. We were part of a group of three families, and thankfully, were put in the orchard, together.
The play area is a real plus, the kids spent hours there, but keep in mind that it can not be seen from the orchard, although you probably can from the main field.
The river is also a plus, and one of the families spent a day there alone, a 'private canoeing lake'.
Not a place to go if you want street lamps and nightclubs, there isn't even a shop on site, and that keeps it extremely rural.
Make sure you bring a torch to avoid the hedgehogs at night.
Would love to return.

One word - outstanding! We booked mains farm purely on the fact it had availability for the jubilee weekend as I left it a bit late booking. After reading other reviews I thought 'sounds a bit too good to be true' in fact everything you will read is true.
The owners Robert and Julie are lovely down to earth people who make it a great time away. Helpful, friendly and thoughtful people who have thought about what's needed to enjoy camping.
The tent fields are spacious and clean and have fantastic views of the fields and the newly installed play area for the kids. The toilets and showers are clean and modern and there is a wet room for families. There is a kitchen area complete with oven, microwave, fridge and tea and coffee facilities for communal use which we used quite a few times.
There are some lovely walks along the river to the 'secret swing seat' or the other way to lazonby which has a supermarket (co-op) and an open air pool. My husband enjoys running so Robert took the time to map out some routes for him to run.
Anything you need at mains farm they will try their best to help you out

3rd time back to Mains farm and still as fabulous as ever
The site is set in Kirkoswold about 10 miles out of Penrith in the peaceful tranquil county side!
Owners cannot do enough for you! This time we were here for 5 days Thursday to Monday for brother and sister in laws joint hen and stag weekend! This comprised of 12 caravans 4 tents and use of 2 of the fantastically clean and well set out bunk houses! So we basically took over and celebrated in the sun playing games in the day and then having a barn dance using the barn at night! The owners went out of their way to make us all welcome and came to check on us every day to make sure none of us had and complaints and I can assure you there are none! The owner brought the newly born lambs to see all the 16 kids that were here which made there day!
The site is a stones throw from the river Eden and there are some gorgeous walks along it in the sunshine and a swing to sit on and enjoy the gorgeous views there are!
It has a communal kitchen with fridge sink hob cooker and all the utensils and crockery you would need! The wash rooms and toilets are cleaned twice a day and they are fantastic! Hot water in the showers for as long as you want to stay in for which as a tourer is a novelty to find!the toilets are very clean and well maintained!
2pubs down the road are about 1mile away but is a nice walk along the way and you deserve your drink when you get there! but the owners offer a taxi service if you need it!
We can not thank them enough for there hospitality over the weekend and the gorgeous weather made it complete and we are already planning the next trip back for all of us again! But I'm sure we will be back for a weekend before that as we love the place so Much!
Again thank you for a fantastic weekend you truly are 6*** caravan site owners and lovely people!

This was our first attempt at Caravanning and we could not have picked a more friendly site. The owners, Robert & Julie, were friendly and helped us immensely. There is plenty of space between pitches for privacy and water and electric at each pitch. Toilet blocks are ok and are in the process of being upgraded for new season along with other improvements. Plenty of space for the young ones to let off steam and some lovely walks down by the river. The Village is just under a mile away and has a local shop which stocks most things and the Crown Inn is highly recommended for food, drinks and hospitality. Some lovely places to visit, we will be back soon hopefully.

Spent two days here winding down from Christmas on our way to Scotland for New Year. A little bit muddy for Motorhomes (all grass pitches ). We had to be directed to our pitch by tractor, was a different arrival
Facilities basic but good, 1 loo and two showers in ladies, but did have extra toilets and a wet room in the room next door, with a wash up sink. Plenty of hot water. OH was happy with gents facilities,
No shop on site and quite a walk away for us crinklies to nearest in the village, with two pubs. Although we never left, the site the owner would run you in and you could walk back, most of the other campers said it only took them 15 to 20 mins.
There are cabins with bunk beds if required and you could buy local preserves. I believe there is a tent camp site but I did not see this so cannot comment.
Will go again when we next go to Scotland.

Not long back from a fantastic weekend at Mains farm,
The site is one of the best I have stayed at in my many years of camping and caravanning.
Set in a stunning location with plenty of walking within close distance plus ancient churches/stone circles/a river and pubs (we didn't manage to get to the pubs but we will definitely make the effort to rectify that next time.
The site is superbly clean and well serviced with the friendliest hosts I have had the pleasure to meet, yet not overbearing or awash with rules and regulations.
The area is full of small pretty villages and small hamlets, also stunning views from the hills that are but a cock stride away.
Convenient for the C2C (coast to coast cycle route)there are also a range of very very nice bunkhouses on site IF you don't want to take a tent. The bunkhouses also had exposed beams as they were built into the old farm buildings in a very tasteful style.
Toilets were scrupulously clean and very very hot powerful showers, ideal after a long walk or cycle ride.
We will be back. Again and again and again.

Just got back from a fabulous stay at Mains Farm. The owners were very friendly and helpful; they couldn't do enough for you.
Our tent pitch was in the main tent field as we had requested electric hookup. There was ample space between pitches and although it was the week leading up to August bank holiday, the site didn't feel cramped.
Robert and Julie have gone out of their way to make the facilities as 'home from home' as possible, even by installing a kitchen with double oven for campers to use at their convenience.
If there was any criticism to make of this fabulous site it would be the number of toilets and showers: these are plenty adequate when quietish but a few more would be beneficial, particularly on busy weekends.
This is one site we will definitely be returning to either for a weekend before the weather gets too cold, or in the spring.
Fabulous!
