It shouldn’t work, but it does… This is our overall impression of Mains Farm Caravan & Campsite. It is part of a working farm, but this is not an issue, with no noise, smells or distractions, etc. The campsite itself (work in progress, according to the owners)is set on what appears to have been the centre of the original farm, with the main house and several outbuildings, some partly derelict, set in and around a courtyard. The facilities are basic (with unfinished refurbishments in parts – no ceiling in shower area, birds in the rafters and facings and skirtings unvarnished / painted) and are scattered about the courtyard. The lounge room is an old, dark sandstone room with a couple of rickety chairs, a table and a piece of farming machinery that belongs in a museum.
However, don’t let this put you off. On the contrary, the camping pitches (with EHU), where we were located, were well maintained (although on a slight slop, but not an issue) and there was plenty of room between tents, with beautiful views of the countryside ahead.
The real selling point for us, and no-doubt other visitors, was the owners , who were very welcoming, friendly and could not do enough to make our trip enjoyable and a success. Robert was a definite character, who always seemed to be about making sure that all was well. On returning from a day out, Robert welcomed us back and on mentioning that we were thinking of booking a table at the Featherson Arms, in Kirkoswald for lunch the next day, he immediately went into his house and phoned and reserved a table for us, before offering to run us there for free. The next day, and true to his word, Robert gave us a lift to the pub, for as he pointed out he felt that we [being Scottish] “had the right accent for a drink”. A wee bit of stereotyping, but, why turn down a chance of a free lift – well almost. When we offered to pay for the lift to the pub, Robert declined, but suggested that we could leave a drink behind the bar for him later. On doing so, the barman laughed and advised us Robert now doesn’t have to buy any pints when he visits the pub – nice position to be in!
The food at the Featherson Arms is excellent and reasonably priced too. Across the road, there is the Crown Inn, but we didn’t visit this establishment, although Robert did say that it was nice too.
There is no doubt that this site is set in a quiet & beautiful part of the country, although there is a shop and several pubs (mentioned above), within a mile of the campsite, in the village of Kirkoswald. A little further down the road is Lazonby with a well-stocked CO OP, an outdoor swimming pool and, of course, there is the town of Penrith, approximately 20 minutes’ drive from the campsite, with all the usual shops, including Morrison’s and GO Outdoors, etc. Mains Farm is a good base for exploring the countryside, wildlife and undertaking outdoor activities such as walking, fishing and cycling (including being a stopover site for the C2C Route), etc. As for us, we did some walking and attended the Penrith Parkrun (Parkrun organise free, weekly, 5km timed runs around the world).
This campsite is certainly worth a visit for new and established campers alike and we will almost certainly visit it again.
Happy camping!

One of the best campsites we have stayed at. The facilities are excellent always clean and the kitchen with kettle, fridge & microwave for campers is an excellent addition, showers & toilets are really plentiful, some brilliant homely touches flowers, towels and soap in all the loo's.
The camping area is really well laid out plenty of space between tents.
The new pod's are a great addition if you only want a quick night or two away. The bunkrooms are ideal for family members who don't camp but want to join you or for C2C stop overs. The location is simply perfect great views, great walks in the local area.
The site owners go out of their way to friendly and helpful but without been intrusive, we were a party of 8 and Robert gave us a lift to the local pub where we had an excellent meal. We hired a fire basket and were given plentiful wood and shown where to get more wood if we needed it.
A awful lot of thought has gone in to this site which has resulted in a perfect site that we will visit again and fully recommend to anyone without reservation.

We had a great stay on this site. It was an ideal base for those in the group doing the C2C, lots in the area for this who weren't and an idyllic site for the children, who could play freely and safely - it was good to be car free at the pitches. Lovely and exceptionally helpful and accommodating owners. We will definitely visit again.

This campsite is fabulous!
The location is stunning and the farmhouse and surroundings are idyllic.
We were 6 adults and 2 children meeting at a halfway point (being Penrith ish). After trying loads of sites we finally found this gem who were willing and able to accommodate us for just 2 nights on Easter weekend.
We were directed into the walled garden/orchard which was amazing - loads of space and privacy. You don't park your car next to the tent like some sites but we felt that was a benefit as you don't end up hearing doors and boots opening and shutting 24/7.
The shower block was spotless and I have to say - a toaster, kettle and microwave - WELL DONE! It especially came in handy for a couple of hot water bottles in the middle of the night when the temperature took a bit of a plunge! Brrrrrrrrr!
Our hosts were very helpful and friendly with offers of driving you to the local pub and lush homemade marmalade for sale.
The wee play park for the children was perfect (although the 3 year old was more interested in trying to climb the tree and running laps round the buildings). The lambs were gorgeous and we will definitely be returning (perhaps in the summer with a higher chance of warmer nights though).
If we could rate this place higher than 10 out of 10 we would!

This is a lovely site in a beautiful part of cumbria. We stayed two nights and wish it could have been longer. There is plenty of space to walk your dogs, it had been very wet before we arrived so we didn't use the river walk but it would be great on another occasion. The owners were very friendly and helpful. It is an easy walk into Kirkoswald where there are two good pubs and an excellent village shop.

This is a little gem! The toilet and shower facilities are plentiful and always clean. The facilities are excellent and well maintained. We especially liked that there was a kitchen which we could use in bad weather or if we just popped for an overnight stay and didn't want to bring so much equipment. We were in a camping field with electricity and an amazing view, and we loved that campers are given plenty of space between tents. There are also bunkhouses and camping pods, good for walkers, cyclists etc. The village is only a mile away with 2 pubs serving meals. We ate at the Fetherstone Arms and the meal was fantastic. There are loads of wonderful walks in amazing surroundings, details of which you will find at the campsite. The owners are absolutely fantastic, so helpful and accommodating. They went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed and are always on hand if needed. We were in a group of 8, and Robert even gave us a lift to the pub! We would wholeheartedly recommend this site to anyone, whether couples, families, campers, caravanners or walkers - it is perfect.

This is the only campsite we have ever made a return visit to! We have been there 4 times in 3 years and plan to return again. The owners, Robert and Julie, are always available and helpful. Julie checked on us mid-thunderstorm and Robert offered to use his blowtorch on our reluctant barbecue!
The facilities are plentiful and spotless. The site has a small playpark for the kids and lots of walks for dogs. The river is only a field away and we spent time every day splodging and swimming and, with the kind permission of the owners, canoeing. Robert even let us store our inflatable canoe in one of the barns.
My kids love this site, my dogs love this site and we do too!

Can only agree with all the positive comments about this site and Robert and Julie are so helpful and friendly they just simply cannot do enough for you and make you feel so welcome. Stayed in the main caravan site for a week and had a wonderful holiday.
Facilities are what you would expect for the price and kept well cleaned even with the rain. Neither me or my wife had to wait for the shower or toilet when needed. EH is 16amp and there is enough water points around as well.
The pitches are flat and well spaced with more than enough room for the van, awning and car and there is enough space left the size of a football pitch to play games in which everybody did and joined in together all week. It rained really heavy on the Tuesday night for an hour or two and there was a lot of surface water on the field which drained away when it stopped raining and didn't turn the field boggy, the owner came round asking everyone if they were all right when it stopped which was a nice thing to do especially for the campers.
Lots to see and do in the area with loads of walks from the site and the village of Kirkoswald is 0. 9 miles away with 2 village pubs the Crown Inn and the Feathersten arms. The food at the FA was top notch and priced cheap, the CI had only just reopened and was not serving food yet so cant comment but the beer was good. We liked our stay that much we cant wait to go back. Well done and thanks for a wonderful time.

This campsite is perfect ! Lovely owners made us feel very welcome the minute we arrived, extremely helpful, if you've forgotten anything, they will help you out, they are a very chilled out couple. We took our two boys age 2 & 4 yrs old, it was so safe for them to run freely, and also a little park which was lovely for them and us to have a bit of peace ;) Facilities are great, clean, and there is a kitchen with a kettle. The campsite has stunning views and is quiet and spacious. We had a very relaxing and great time.
Thank you so much for looking after us. We have told our friends about your place and we will be back soon, from Shelly & Sam x
