We live in Cornwall and wanted to stay somewhere close to home in our folding camper during the lovely spell of hot weather at the beginning of the school holidays. We ended up staying at this great site for 5 nights and commuted to work.

The staff were really friendly, helpful and incredibly cheerful. The site is very well maintained. Some pitches were level while others were slightly sloping.

They have got to be the biggest pitches I have ever seen - ours and the others near us were 9m x 9m. In my opinion it would be an improvement to have more water points. None were visible from our pitch and we had to go hunting.

One of the reasons we chose this site was the swimming pools and we were not disappointed. The heated pool was a lovely temperature and we were able to swim every day after work. What a luxury! Apart from 'no diving' there are none of the usual swimming pool rules (no airbeds, no ball games, etc). I had always thought these rules stuffy and superfluous but have to say that we, like others, found that our enjoyment of the water was marred somewhat by lots of people throwing balls and by groups sometimes taking over large areas of the pool for ball games.

This is clearly a family park. Although we do not have children in tow, the site is very well appointed for them. Apart from the pools there are several play areas, a pirate ship, table tennis and a crazy golf course. It is also close to Carlyon Bay beach. There was also entertainment a couple of nights a week. I am guessing that this will only be in peak season.

The nearest pub is The Britannia Inn, a 20 minute stroll. It serves good locally sourced food and ales and has a big outside area with play facilities for children. Children (& some adults) might be interested to see Charlestown; less than 10 mins drive or about 40 mins walking along the coast path.

It has tall ships in the harbour, one of which was used for filming the pirate episode of Doctor Who. Charlestown also has a pub and a couple of good places to eat. The Pier House is a favourite with us locals and, again, offers locally sourced food and ales. Best to book at weekends.

There are no street lights on the road that passes the site or on the site access road and the night lighting on site is low level. This means that at night when there are no clouds you can sit back and stargaze. A rare thing these days. Now we know where to go to watch the meteor showers due later this month!

Carlyon Bay is a relatively large site (180 pitches I think) and has 3 shower blocks. The décor is of a really high standard and they were always clean. In the block closest to us there were 3 shower cubicles and, although we tried at different times of the morning/day/evening, we always had to wait for one to be free.

For the last couple of days of our stay if there was no cubicle free when we came out of the pool we went home to shower instead. In all 3 cubicles the shower heads were fitted very close to the wall and the direction of water flow could not be changed so it was a bit difficult to shower.

Also the water flow was erratic. At times, the water slowed to almost a trickle and went cold. After what sounded like a pump starting up, the water flow and hot water were restored. The shower head in the cubicle nearest the door only ever let out a trickle of water, which could not be remedied so was pretty useless for showering.

The recycling bins near our closest washing up point did not appear to be emptied regularly, which led to piles of stuff being left on the ground around them. It was also evident that some people didn't realise they were recycling bins and put all sorts of rubbish in them. Perhaps clearer signage would help?

We were very pleased to have found this great site so close to home and work and will definitely return if the weather heats up again.

We spent a week at Carlyon bay and had a fantastic time. The site is beautifully kept and the pitches were huge. We had a great pitch (with electrical hookup) in Crinnis near the play area and could have probably fitted our tent in it twice again (and it's a large 6 man tent).

The facilities for the children are excellent and ours spent lots of time on the ship-style play area, the crazy golf and the pool. There were also lots of older children enjoying the table tennis.

One of the really nice touches was that all these facilities were free - we've stayed on sites that would have charged extra. We also liked the fact that the pool was open til 8pm as we often like to use it in the evening if we've been out for the day.

The main pool was reasonably warm although the two smaller ones were on the cold side (I'd have wanted a wet-suit!).

The shower blocks on the site looked like they had been recently refurbished and the showers nearest our field were great, lovely and warm with great pressure and I didn't have to queue once.

They are push button and it's worth working out which ones stay on longest after you've pressed the button! I also liked the fact that they had cubicles with toilets and sinks in as I quite like to be able to just have a quick wash in the morning. I did often have to queue for these but if you just wanted the toilet there was another block 30 seconds away with normal stalls.

We were fortunate enough to have lovely weather and that meant that everything we did was within a ten-minute drive of the campsite, with the exception of a trip to Crealy (30 mins). We were not short of places to go and would recommend Polkerris Beach, Wheal Martin China Clay Country Park and Charlestown.

We didn't explore St Austell town centre but there were a range of supermarkets as well as a Halfords and other such stores on the outskirts for practical needs. I used the large Tesco which was only five minutes away from the site. The beach within walking distance of the site had some building work going on and we did not visit twice.

The only negative points to the site were that the Café was very disorganised - often getting orders wrong and frequently taking a long time to serve food (although it was nice when it came), and that the recycling rubbish would have benefited from being collected more often.

These were minor things though and did not detract from a great site - we will definitely go back.

Stayed 5 nights here during lovely(!) weather. We were very impressed with the standard of the facilities on offer. The toilet /shower blocks were fitted out to a very high standard and kept clean throughout our stay. Despite the site being nearly full the swimming pool was not too busy and the terraced pitch we stayed on was very spacious. The crazy golf was free and there is a grass football pitch and tennis court. The beach was a pleasant ten minute walk away across a golf course. Please don't be put off by the derelict night club on the beach. This was securely fenced off and is about to be redeveloped we understand. The staff we really helpful and friendly too. There are dozens of places to visit nearby and the walk to Charlestown village is well worth it for the view.

Overall this was a great site and we will definitely be returning.

I stayed at this lovely site for 5 nights, in a tent. It was easy to access on public transport as I don't have a car. The reception staff were incredibly helpful and friendly.

The site is well maintained and lots of large levle pitches. Although it had been very wet, there wasn't a problem with water logging. The shower blocks were fitted out to a high standard and nice hot water.

The facilities always appeared clean. The shop was well stocked and reasonably priced, but whilst I was there the opening times were very restrictive. The country kitchen meals were very tasty and very well priced, the staff friendly and chatty.

The surrounding area is lovely and there is easy access onto the coast path and Charlestown is a charming place to visit, being an easy walk along the coast path. Would definitely return to the site.

Originally booked to stay for 5 nights but only stayed for three, that is through no fault of the campsite, but the weather was rubbish and OH is not a loyal camper!

Lovely campsite, very clean and well equipped. Pitches are a good size but ours was not huge. NIce terracing on one side of the campsite and flatter on the other. Plenty of water taps, rubbish spots and very clean and well equipped loo blocks.

Excellent shop, very well equipped with everything you could need. There is a reception which also acts as an information point. Check in is swift and easy.

Plenty of room for kids to play at the parks but not much room for anything like rounders or football.

Had the weather been better we might have got out and about more but we only walked as far as the beach and a small trip to Fowey.

The beach nearby is sadly let down by a very large disused night club which lies in ruins. However there is now plans to redevelop the area, with a leisure complex, residential area and still access to the beach.

I would be very happy to recommend this campsite but would want to come back when I know the sun will shine!

Fabulous site set in a beautiful area only a few miles from the eden project and with excellent facilities. Its easy to see why this place has a 5* rating as its impeccably clean and tidy and the hard standing pitches are perfect for camper vans with electric hook up and water near by

The shower block & toilets here were the best we had used on our weeks visit to cornwall touring around from one site to another, all the sites were really good but this one definitely stood out

Loads of wildlife around the grounds and only a short walk to the beach and it was great for stargazing (when the clouds moved over)

Although we don't have children this place is well equipped for them

We were really pleased that we chose to stay here

We have just returned from a week at the Carlyon Bay. This was the week before the August Bank holiday and was therefore very busy and the site was full.

On our arrival we were greeted by very friendly and welcoming staff who seemed genuinely keen to explain all about the sites facilities, this excellent customer service continued throughout our stay. The pitch we had been allocated (Lerryn) was a very large pitch with electric hook up.

We were situated on the 'upper' field which was terraced, however the pitches were flat with a gentle slope. The lower field was all flat and some of the pitches here were even larger! These are some of the largest pitches I have ever seen on a campsite. We had a fair amount of heavy rain at times, however we did not see any signs of flooding as reported by other reviewers.

Facilities at this site are excellent if showing a little wear and tear. The toilet blocks were large and of a very high standard, however we only saw them being cleaned once a day just after lunch, subsequently at times they were a bit untidy. There are three toilet blocks with hot powerful showers and communal wash basins as well as some private cubicles containing wash basins and toilet. There are also baby baths built into the counter surface which seemed a good idea.

This is an ideal site for families with 3 outdoor heated pools (junior, adult and paddling pool), the junior pool was quite warm but the adult pool was a little cold. The pools are also unattended, so parents with small children beware. Next to the pool is a covered courtyard area with pool and table tennis along with the laundery and snack/takeaway bar. The food here looked very good and was very reasonably priced, we only had breakfast which was very good and delicious bacon baps on the last day.

The evening entertainment is also held in the courtyard area and while loud it always finished by 9. 30pm. They have entertainment on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday nights. When we were there they had a very good (pop) band, kids disco, line dancing and a local easy listening singer /musician /comedian.

One good thing is that there is no bar on site, which from experience keeps rowdiness down at night. We did experience some noise from some of the teenagers staying at the site, but nothing too bad and things always quietened down by about 10. 30pm after which the site was very quiet.

There are two kids play grounds one of which is for the under fives along with a 7 hole crazy golf course, again these areas are a little old and tired and really could do with updating, however our five year old daughter loved them and practically lived there whenever we were on the site.

The on site shop was very good, very well stocked and reasonably priced. It sold everything from basic camping supplies to groceries to beer and wine.

Overall this is a very well appointed and well run site, we really enjoyed out stay there and would thoroughly recomment it for families. It is ideally suited for visting the St Austell area including the Eden Project.

Carlyon Bay beach is a 10 minute walk away and the day we went was largely deserted even though the weather was hot and sunny, the building works don't detract too much from what is a very nice sandy beach.

We would give this site 10 out of 10 but feel we need to mark it down to a 9 due to some of the site facilities being a little tired.

 Just returned from this site.

Biggest pitches I've ever stayed on. Excellent friendly & helpful staff. Very well laid out & attractive site. Ideal for children all ages but especially primary aged as play areas, swimming pool, crazy golf etc excellent for this age. Wifi areas for older kids as well as table tennis.

Site coped well with full summer holiday capacity & we never even had to queue for showers. Showers & toilet facilities excellent. Would definitely recommend this site & would return.

Excellently located near all tourist attractions & only 5 mins from Eden project. Cornish market on Sat & Sun (& every Wed in summer hols)5 min walk from site & well worth a visit.

Only 2 comments were; 1)the washing up areas are fed by the same hot water as the showers & if the showers are in use you get no water at all in the washing up sink & 2). Table tennis tables so popular my son never got a chance to play as there were always people queuing - would be worth getting another one please.

Just returned from a weeks camping at Carlyon Bay and what a amazing site. This was our first stay here after great reviews in this web site.

The campsite is very well run, and must say a big thank-you to jeff who's attention to customer care was amazing a rare thing in today's world.

We stayed in verian field a small corner with only seven pitches I was nice because it was quiet and peaceful the ony down side ( if you can call it ) was there is no lighting so if you need to visit the toilets in the night it is very dark but then again a torch would be handy

The toilets and shower blocks are very clean and spotless at all times.

Where the site is situated makes it a ideal base to visit Cornwall we visited many coves and beaches from there

The staff are very friendly and helpful especially if you are looking restaurants also the ground working team cleaned the bin area daily at least 3 times a day just to keep it clean.

We found the pool complex was great with heated water and cushioned flooring our children was in there element

With a well stocked Shop on site ( not bad prices), table tennis, pool table, swim pool, mini golf and a large playground realy every thing you would need.

In fact we enjoyed it so much we are to return next year and have already booked. We had good weather only the last day did we see rain hard.

So in response to anyone out there thinking of a great base, great site, great staff look no further I highly recommend carlyon bay Cornwall

What can I say about Carlyon Bay Camping Park, having been to this campsite for the last three years and have booked for next year already.

This campsite is a must for anyone with children, the courtyard is fantastic as no matter what the weather there is always something for them to do, the three swimming pools are fantastic, I know there is no lifeguard but any responsible parent would not let there children go alone even if there was a lifeguard.

The location if great for visiting different locations in Cornwall and being able to arrive any day is fab as you can miss all the Saturday traffic.

The facilities are spotless and the grounds are always so tidy you never see any rubbish on the floor.

The campsite is always so quiet considering how many people are there and at night it is deadly quiet you don't hear a sound.

The size of the pitches are very generous with more than enough room for Caravan, Awning, two cars and windbreaks around.

All the staff are friendly and nothing is too much trouble for them.

This is the best campsite I have every been on and is a must for anyone wanting a relaxing holiday in the most beautiful part of the country.
