Stayed at Carlyon Bay over the June half term 2010 with 2 other families. We were met by the very friendly and helpful reception staff who showed us to our pitch, which as it happens was directly opposite the reception centre and shop. We had pitches G6, G7 and G8 which all had electric hook-up. I'd recommend any of these for their location in relation to all the amenities on site. It rained heavily on our second night but we experienced no flooding whatsoever so the drainage seems to be well sorted here too. There is a train line that runs along this side of the site but the trains are infrequent and never bothered us at all.

The site is very well maintained both outdoors and inside the communal areas. The toilets and showers were spotless and there was always plenty of hot water, although some of the showers were a little on the weak side when it came to water pressure. Whilst there was never a queue in the men's, my wife did have to wait a couple of times for the toilets/shower first thing in the morning.

The kids used the pool every day and whilst I didn't venture in myself, there were no complaints of it being cold and like the rest of the site it was very clean and well maintained. There's also a great adventure playground for the smaller children and free crazy golf for everyone.

Although not a particularly large site, the pitches were very generous, our tents being a Vango Tigris 800 with porch extension (and the pirate flag if you were there!), Outwell Hartford XXL with canopy and a Litchfield Apache and we had plenty of space for the cars and bbqs etc. We sat up each night around a firepit/bbq until midnight/0100 and caused no problems for our neighbours with our talking (the kids were in bed though by 1030 so that probably helped!). Equally we heard no noise from our other neighbours.

The site has a very well stocked shop and we were pleasantly surprised by the very reasonable prices of most of the things sold. There's also a Tesco and Asda within a 5 and 10 minute drive respectively. There are also takeaways located very close - we used the Indian and the food was good with plenty of it. There is a food servery on site but we didn't use this so can't comment on its qualities.

The nearby beach at Carlyon Bay is easily reached and worth the 10 minute walk. There are building works ongoing on the beach front but these cause no problems in accessing the seashore. Charlestown is a 30 - 40 minute stroll along the clifftops and well worth the walk.

The site is also very well placed for the Eden Project (well worth a visit and if you have Tesco vouchers use them to book your ticket before you go - half the price and you don't have to queue to get in!) although exploring the rest of Cornwall can take time due to the limited amount of dual carriageways.Land's End is about 1 hour 30mins away and Newquay about 35-40 minutes away.

All in all, we had a great time at Carlyon Bay and would recommend this site to anyone visiting Cornwall. It's easy to see why this site has won awards in the recent past.

Stayed here over the bank holiday for one night as a 'break the family into camping'

Rang the camp site up and explained our circumstances and they were excellent. Booked over the phone and staff very helpful.

On arrival, they were great, explained where everything was and made us feel very welcome.

The site was great with large open spaces for the children to play football. Had younger kids playground too for our 2yr old.

Toilets and shower block very clean, no extra charges for hot water.

Didn't use the swimming pool, but everyone we saw and heard seemed to be having a good time.

Can't wait to go back in the summer.

What a lovely site. I don't usually like sites that look so commercial but this was a great sunrise. The guy in reception was really helpful and explained where everything was.

Great facilities the pool looked good, shop was well stocked and the toilets where so smart and cleaner than some hotels I've stayed in! And at £17 per night, really good value for money. A lovely coastal walk is not far

Top Marks!

We booked this site after doing an extensive search of Cornish campsites on this site.!

On arrival, our impressions were very favourable. We had requested being as close to the dog walking area as possible due to our old dog which meant that we were located in the grassy tent area but this was no problem as we had been given what we had asked for!

As advertised, the pitches were huge, although they did appear smaller on the hardstandings in the lower fields but still generous compared to some sites! The toilet facilities are of a good standard generally but take 20ps with you for the hairdryers (which is annoying when you're paying 28 or more a night!)

A railway runs along the top of the site but it didn't bother us really, trains are not too frequent.

There is a covered courtyard type area for eating (I would hesitate to call it a restaurant) which also does takeaways. We didn't use it but many seemed to and the portions looked quite generous. They also do a take away breakfast.

There is a free mini golf and ping pong which our son loved and there is also a nice park area for the younger kids. The site has a well stocked shop.

Staff are amazingly friendly and helpful and very knowledgeable about the local area.

There is a request bus stop outside the entrance to the park too which is very useful when you have a motorhome!

The beach is a 10 minute uphill walk from just outside the park (although it is a bit of a construction site as they appear to be finally redeveloping the old Coliseum building) and a huge area is fenced off with security which gives it a bit of a run-down feel at the moment but I am sure it will be great when it is eventually finished!

Just a little further on towards Charlestown up the back road, is a little shopping complex which has an Indian restaurant and takeaway and also a Chinese.

Tesco is between Carlyon Bay and Charlestown reached via the back road and back down under the railway arch or out onto the main road back to Saint Austell.

I have to give the little seaside village of Charlestown a mention as I really liked it there, all the owners of the shops and restaurants were very friendly and the food looked nice in most of them. Lovely coffee shop on the right down the hill as you enter the village with cakes to die for! A special mention to the Rashleigh Arms pub on the left as you enter the village. We had the Sunday Carvery (suggest you book first as it was incredibly full including all the tables outside!)for 8.95 but I have never received such HUGE portions anywhere! It was delicious!

On one night we also ordered a Dominos pizza from St Austell by phone which was delivered to the site for us.

All in all a great break at a well run site and we will definitely consider returning again.

Stayed on this site at beginning of May 2010 and liked it so much going back middle of May 2010.

Toilet facilities superb and site very clean and tidy. Hard standing and grass pitches. I had a large hard standing pitch. Plenty big enough for my 27foot motorhome.

Staff at the site are very helpful and friendly.

Would recommend this site. May of course be busier in the height of summer with children etc. There is a play area for them and swimming pools. Good location for some nice walks and a few miles from the Eden Project.

This was our first visit to the site and found it via this website. We arrived on the Friday evening to a warm welcome. We had requested a hardstanding as we were unsure what the grass would be like, so we were right next to a Motorhome Rally that was on on the site. That said, it didn't cause a problem - even though they were a bit high spirited at times.

The shower block we used was lovely and spacious, 4 showers, 4 loos with a sink in each cubicle (but you had to go outside the cubicle to use the paper towels). The showers were always hot, (maybe too hot for children), and very powerful. The position of the shower head did mean that the floor got wet though. There were two hooks and a fitted bench in each cubicle so plenty of room.

All the pitches were spacious and the site nicely laid out in smaller areas. We didn't use the takeaway so can't comment on that, but the area did look nice. We had a nice Indian takeaway from up the road (menus in reception), and also ate in the Rashleigh Arms in Charlestown on the Sunday, which was good value for money. We arrived early at about 6.20 and had to eat in the bar as all the tables were booked, which was surprising for a Sunday evening.

All in all we had a lovely weekend and have already booked to go back for a weekend at the beginning of June with our daughter and her family.

Stayed on this site for two nights in late April whilst visiting the Eden project. It was very peaceful with only a handful of the other pitches occupied. Well-maintained site.

Beautiful beach across the golf course despite the building works mentioned in other reviews.

We were disappointed by a few things, given the 5* rating of the site. Firstly both the shop and the takeaway were closed, presumably because it was low season, and there wasn't a shop within walking distance. We probably would not have chosen this site had we known this in advance.

Secondly, the showers work on a push button system and each push lasts only 20 secs or so, so you have to keep pressing it. Added to this, the windows were open, there was no heating inside and it was chilly outside leading to a very cold experience despite the hot water.

The final straw was the hairdryers, both requiring 20p pieces which I hadn't taken to the shower, not expecting to have to pay for this. As I trudged back to the 'van I was a cold, unhappy bunny. In a week of touring we paid the most for this site and weren't required to pay for hairdryers anywhere else or suffer rationed showers.

This is a shame and it let down what is a lovely site in a great location.

I'm not often inclined to voice my opinion on review sites, but as regular visitors to this lovely campsite I feel I have to speak up in praise of it. We go there two or three times a year, in high season and low season and have always enjoyed a warm welcome and excellent standard of facilities. It is always spotlessly clean, and the pitches are huge, well drained and maintained, as is the whole park. I read the review from 'Sherper' in amazement as we have stayed there in all winds and weathers including very heavy rain and have never had a problem at all. I would say the complete opposite - this is definitely an excellent place to stay whatever the weather forecast!

Beautiful park-like site with very large sites. The grass and vegetation are very well maintained. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Small shop where everything still available at normal prices. The "Country Kitchen" offers a limited menu and is located on the covered square where regular entertainment in the form of a band, or clown-man safari with different animals is provided. Beer and other alcoholic drinks are not given.

The nearby beach, accessible by a staircase of 82 steps, has been a building site. The site owner can not change this, however. A little further walk along the golf course and you come to another nice beach. Too bad you can't buy ice cream at these beaches. Near enough to see and do, England is a museum! Recommended include the Eden Project and certainly the Orca Sea Safari from Falmouth, Pendennis Castle where more than worth the effort.

Just returned from a weeks holiday at this campsite on arrival we were greeted by two lovely women who showed us our pitch. They also gave us all the information we needed to know about the park. We had a pich in the higher field it was nice we were also told that if my husband had any problems manoeuvring into the pitch that the owner would help which was nice. The shower blocks were lovely and clean. The pool was nice. The children enjoyed playing in the park and crazy golf. The children were also allowed to ride their bikes around the campsite and there was a nice and friendly atmosphere there. The cafe on site was nice and there was entertainment on the camp a few nights a week the only thing that was missing was a nice little bar. Overall a lovely site and we all enjoyed.
