Having had our third visit to Wombleton I can update my first review.
The site is still fantastic. This was our first weeekend camp and we were lucky to get an electric pitch with just a few days notice and were set up in 'Electric Tent 4', which is the furthest pitch facing you as you exit the shower block.
This is right in the corner of the hedge behind the owners quarters and the airfield hedge. This gave us a completely different experience from the tent field where we have previously pitched.
It is obviously more surrounded by other units, although this did not cause us any problems our neighbours did get smoked out when we lit a BBQ - sorry guys! It was also much cooler than the tent field as we got the morning sun and then shade for the afternoon and evening.
This will be great when it is really hot, but would be a big disadvantage during colder times - we were quite chilly during our tea time BBQ even though everyone else was still in shorts.
Also, this area of the site is much closer to the facilities, which, as we had my 80 year old Father In Law with us was great. The shower block continues to be of a very high standard.
The pub in the village, The Plough, has also been refurbished and modernised recently. Previously it had a bit of the 'Slaughtered Lamb' about it so we had not ventured in. However with the new look us gents went for an explore and I can say we were very pleased.
The small bit you see from the road is the restaurant and there is another welcoming bar further back. The food looked OK, at normal prices, and we managed to toddle back to the site in about 25 minutes, but could have easily done it in 15 with younger legs.
The fish and chip van visits at tea time on Saturday and was welcomed by a lot of the campers.
As per our previous vists there were quite a few kids on site despite the lack of playground etc and they were all well behaved and a credit to their families.
If you like a pleasant, quiet, relaxing camping break Wombleton remains a great site. Its is a great base for exploring the countryside, there is plenty of cycling available, you are not far from all the things to do in York, (we visited the Air Museum at Elvington this time, very good day out), the theme parks at Lightwater Valley and Flamingo Land, and also the seaside at Whitby, Scarborough etc.
Don't forget to visit the North Yorkshire Moors either, there are great views, walks and steam trains to ride, as well as some lovely tea shops to investigate.

We stayed here on route further north. We had tried a campsite nearby first, but as it was after 5pm, the wardens weren't available/answering their phone. So, we drove on & found this one instead.
We arrived in a bit of a sorry state. The window in the roof of our vw camper had been blown out in a thunder storm earlier that day. One of the owners came out to greet us & when he saw our broken window, immediately set to try & patch it up for us. With his help (in the pouring rain) we managed to fix it so that it lasted us the rest of our holiday & the journey home south.
The site was pleasant, the facilities very new & excellent quality. The site itself is on the edge of the old airfield (our pitch was once part of a runway), and there are various legends about the old mess/control rooms being haunted. In daylight though, it makes an excellent walk for dogs, & they can be let off the lead if you keep them on the concrete.
It's now a couple of months since we stayed, but we were so impressed with the owners & their help, we felt we had to leave some feedback -better late than never!

Lovely, well kept site with very friendly owners and definitely the best showers we have ever experienced while camping! Lots of loo's and sinks and everything in there immaculately clean, as was the wash-up room also.
The strict 'no noise after 10.30' rule was great for us, having two small children who need their sleep!
The fact that it didn't have a children's play area did not affect us as we like to spend time out and about during the day. That said, this could pose a problem for some families. This is the only reason we have marked it as 5 out of 10 for child friendliness!
As a family we were made to feel very welcome, and there were a few other children on site. We will be visiting again in the future.

Just returned from a four night stay at this fantastic family run site. The showers are lovely and clean as are the toilets. Good drained level pitches, peaceful site not far from the lovely town of Helmsley and a bit further to Pickering.
We will certainly be back to this site.
Very helpful family who own this perfect site.
The pitches are spacious and you do not feel on top of your neighbours.
We must recommend the lovely fresh eggs available on site also stocked was milk.
We recommend the fish and chip shop in Nawton.

Can't fault this site. Tent field is quiet and spacious. Shower and toilet blocks immaculate. Nice site with plenty of areas if you have a dog to walk. Owners are very nice and friendly. Secure site with a barrier. Have stayed twice and both times were good. People obey the no noise at night rule. The only disturbance was an owl! Great place to watch bats and star gaze. Good base to explore North Yorkshire. Close enough to drive to the very good chippie in Helmsley. Definitely a site to visit.

Just returned from 4 nights at this site. A real pleasure.
Location:
Wombleton is a small village at the base of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. Good for getting to Riveaulx Abbey, Yorkshire Lavender, White Horse for immediate tourist attractions. We also used it as a base for a day in Scarborough & Filey, and an afternoon at the Forbidden Corner at Leyburn.
The site is at the edge of an old airfield and so is pleasantly flat in an area that is renowned for hills. Our route there took us up Sutton Bank a 25% hill which caravans are not permitted to use (there is an alternative route sign posted!)
Site:
Good for both caravans & tents. We had a tent and some times struggled getting pegs in (under the grass is part of the hardcore of the airfield) but once in the tent was not going anywhere!
Pitch size was large enough for our Kampa Filey 6 which is something we are always a little concerned about.
We were shown to our pitch on arrival, provided a leaflet about the park rules and explained how the gates operated. Perfect!
Shower block:
The building contained
Washing up room - 4 sinks
Laundry room - sink (you were allowed to clean BBQs here) coin operated washer & dryer, microwave
Elsan room - drain, table & hose
Gents - toilets & showers
Ladies - toilets (lots) & 6 sinks, 2 cubicles with locking doors & just sinks, one area with 2 sinks, a large mirror & 2 hairdryers (with extra electric sockets for curlers, straighteners, etc), 4 coin operated shower cubicles. 20p pieces needed, one coin providing about 4 mins of lovely hot water. I managed to shower twice in 4 minutes & twice in 8 mins, so save up those 20p pieces! If the site had been busy this would have been a great method of controlling queuing times. As it was we never had to queue.
All rooms were spotless and clean. People appear to really take care of the facilities cleaning up after themselves. The main block was obviously well maintained & cared for.
Overall:
Lovely site and a great pleasure to visit. A lack of children's facilities meant a lack of children, which was heavenly!
Owners were always available to assist with queries, and the leaflet room next door to main booking office was packed full of ideas of things to see, places to eat, etc. It also had an informal book & DVD library which was a nice touch.
We will definitely return to Wombleton and this site! Thank you to the owners for a lovely place to stay.

A nice quiet site with ample toilet/shower facilities. The site was fairly busy when we arrived at the weekend but did not feel overcrowded or mean queuing for the facilities. The toilet block was very clean at all times.
The site is ideally situated for visiting Pickering and the steam railway and there are a number of National Trust properties close by as well.
The owners were very friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble.
One small point is that we didn't realise we needed 20p for the showers- luckily we had a supply in our van from previous camping trips! Not sure if we missed this in the campsite details or previous reviews.

Pleasant site. Tent area flat but be warned only 2-3 inches of soft soil then it is layer of hardcore - presumably as it is on a former WW2 airfield so may previously have been either access roads, accommodation blocks, hangars etc. Good sized pitches even considering how busy the site was.
Rained most of the weekend but didn't get muddy - presumably because of the drainage properties of the hard core!
Toilet areas clean, plenty of cubicles and although B/H weekend and busy never had to queue. 4 shower cubicles and 20p for approx 4 mins, but power showers so 20p well spent. Plenty of room to manoeuvre with 2 hooks and a shelf/bench. Free hairdryer.
Dishwash room/ chemical disposal room and laundry all clean. One washing machine (£2) and dryer (50p)iron and ironing board and also discovered a microwave hidden away in the laundry room.
Small shop in reception caters for most essentials and a little room next door with books and games for those not prepared for the rain.
Plenty water points and even a doggie shower for hounds who like to roll in unmentionables.
Great location for touring the area, close to Helmsley and Pickering - I was fortunate enough to see the Tornado pulling into the station, what a treat!
Didn't see a play area for children but that didn't seem to diminish any enjoyment for the children near me.
As previously mentioned it is next to an old air force base so lots of dog walking off site.
Wardens very friendly and helpful although a bit touchy about awnings and whether mine was to be charged extra even though it is the living area of the trailer tent, and compared to the size of some of the other tents and caravans on site it barely takes up any space.
Price wise, personally I originally thought it was a bit expensive as priced per unit rather than per person. However, considering all factors including the security gates, facilities and the free show put on by the local Falconry on the Sunday it was worth every penny.
I went down the B1257 to avoid Sutton Bank and it is one of those roads that makes driving a joy. It swoops and curves and climbs for miles over the moors, great views and well recommended with plenty of picnic sites. Will definitely return to the area.

On arrival at Wombleton Caravan Park after our very stressful journey (we thought it was Friday 13th). We were greeted with lovely smiles and sympathy from the owners.
While I paid the necessary my husband was shown to our pitch (which we were lucky to get due to a cancellation) thank heavens for email etc and quick response from the owners.
The toilet/shower block were immaculate, (mop and bucket provided) yes 20p is required for use of shower (4mins) but that is a small price to pay compared to some. Recycling facilities very good, nice little shop.
We had a first class view of the falconry show right outside our caravan/awning. Everyone from the young to older generations seemed to enjoy this very much. Very good pitches, plenty of room between each unit so didn't feel encroached upon.
Beautiful countryside, plenty of people going for walks or cycling, unfortunately we didn't do either as husband was unwell.
Make sure you plan your journey well in advance if you have not been this way before as you need to take into consideration Sutton Bank. We live just outside of Newcastle upon Tyne, decide to go down the A1 and go into Thirsk and follow the Caravan Route.
Coming back we came through Helmsley and followed the B1257 found that this was the most convenient and easier way. Less stressful going home, of course being at such a lovely site relaxed us.
Would recommend you try this site.

We are regular visitors to this site - in fact we've been coming here for 20 years! It is now at its best and it is hard to see how it can be improved - but it will - Dave, Brenda and James always look for ways to improve things.
Much comment has been made on the rules. As regular visitors the rules make things run smoothly - almost everyone simply complies and enjoys the site. The 'no BBQ after 8pm' comment is a mystery as this does not apply at all - never has.
There are certainly no children's facilities but kids are welcome. The toilet block is incredible - always clean with plenty of appropriate facilities - private wash rooms, microwave etc etc. 20p for a shower? great value.
Security is proportional and we are delighted - electronic gates with keypad/card.
