This is as stated in many previous reviews, is a fantastic, peaceful and idyllic campsite.

Facilities are above average, and cleaned regularly - twice a day I think. I didn't have to queue for showers once, although due to the adverse weather during the first week of our

Stay the site wasn't at capacity.

The weather was absolutely terrible during our first week, but the owners did all they could to prepare each pitch ready for new arrivals, or to repair pitches like ours that had become overly squishy underneath our living area (sorry Nick!).

We had two days during which we woke and it was raining, and didn't stop until we went to bed -

Not what you'd expect for August! - although it must be stated that the site owners aren't responsible for the British summer! Most of the fields had become very damp, and the cars had started to cut the fields up. The owner asked people to use the very top field to park their cars in order to protect his site.

On the positive, the site dried out really quickly during the finer weather in the second week, as promised!

The views from both the pitch we were allotted (37, with EHU on the top field) and the washing up area were something to behold. The sunsets were stunning. My little girl really enjoyed the play area and the 'climbing tree'.

Local attractions:

- Combe Marin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park , top marks. Expensive but well worth it. Would recommend you try and watch the Sea Lion display and the talk given by the 'Wolfman'.

-Watermouth Castle. Again expensive, but top marks. Suitable for young kids and adults who like a 'trip' down memory lane. This has to be the weirdest, trippiest place I've ever visited. But totally recommended. Those who have already visited, would understand where I'm coming from! This is an attraction that can be visited on foot from the site.

- Ifracombe - great for a wander round - and we took both a sight-seeing and a fishing boat trip from here. We also visited Tunnels Beach, although not sure we'd go more than once.

- Lee. Lovely little village with shingle beach, just outside Ilfracombe.

- Croyde. We visited this beach five times. (Free parking for National Trust members).

- Woolacombe - another good beach but £6 to park the car.

- Linton and Lynmouth. We spent a wet afternoon in these two lovely villages. The cliff railway is a well worth a ride.

- Arlington House. A National Trust property about 8 miles from Combe Martin. Passed a wet afternoon away.

For pub food, I would recommend Hele Billys. We ate out at Hele Billys twice and can totally recommend both the food and the service! They do daytime offers which a fellow camper on-site also recommended.

The butchers in Ilfracombe sell lovely steaks, homemade burgers and kofte kebabs for a very reasonable cost. Would recommend a visit for any BBQ lovers.

Would I stay at this site again - a definite yes!

We stayed at this site for 4 nights in early July and I have to say it is pretty much my 'ultimate' campsite. I can definitely see why it has won so many accolades and received such great reviews and for me the site did live up to the high expectations.

Firstly it has been really well thought out; although the site is on a hill, the pitches themselves are on level terraces and everyone gets the awesome views of the sea and north Devon coast. The terraces are separated with pretty bushes and flower borders which add colour and interest - I hate flat boring sites with no features! The pitches are very spacious & well maintained and set out in such a way that you don't really feel like there are 50 of them on site. The bathroom & wash up facilities are more than adequate; they are fairly new and well kept; always clean with plentiful free hot water.

The on site shop sells a good range of groceries including organic milk, lovely bacon & eggs, cheese, ham and ice-creams, local meat and homemade cakes.

Waste recycling is also compulsory on this site and it's good to see the owners promoting this! This is actually indicative of the site in general, it’s clearly well managed but without this being intrusive and having lots of obvious rules.

The site is un-commercial, simple and has really peaceful and tranquil vibe; the owners make it quite clear when booking that anyone who doesn't want this sort of atmosphere should book elsewhere.

The site is well located for the exploring the north Devon coast and there is loads to do in the area. The Tarka trail is great for cycling, there are loads of beaches and pretty villages to explore and the site is right by the South West Coast path for lots of walks. It's also well worth the short walk from the site down to Watermouth Bay to catch an amazing sunset over the harbour.

Ilfracombe itself is a bit of a misnomer; the old harbour area is nice and there are plenty of boat and fishing trips, including to Lundy Island but you need to book well in advance for this one. There are also some lovely walks on the outskirts of town to the Tors and along the coast, but the high street and centre of town is a little run down in my opinion which is a shame.

Tunnels Beach in the town is great, although you do have to pay a small fee and don’t go expecting golden sand, it is very rocky, but this makes it excellent for rock pooling! The original Victorian bathing pool is there too and makes a safe place for swimming / inflatables. Good bacon butties in the café there too, as well as free Internet access.

There were plenty of things we didn’t get chance to do whilst we were there and this campsite will definitely be top of our list for a return visit next year!

This was our second visit to the site. We went there four years ago and it was the fantastic views that made us want to go back.

Since our last visit the shower block has been rebuilt and there are now more showers and basins for both sexes. The building has been built to use natural light and at night the lights operate on sensors, which is fine once you know, although going into a pitch black building in the middle of the night needs a little courage. There are no hand dryers, but hairdryers are provided. The showers work on 20 second bursts like the ones at swimming pools, which was a bit frustrating.

Hand soap was provided in the shower blocks and the washing up area.

There is a disabled loo with shower in both ladies and gents.

My daughter has MS so we telephoned to ask if we could be given a pitch near the loos. The owner was very kind and sympathetic and we were given the same pitch as last time, on the lower level with fantastic views.

The disabled loo has a shower in it and no handrail by the shower. Also the pegs to hang clothes on etc are very close to the loo, which has no lid.

This is the first site we have been to where there is limited staff presence on site. There seemed to be someone there for an hour or two in the morning and an hour in the evening. Last time we went there was a man there almost all the time. We never did find out the opening hours for the shop as there was no notice on the window, and presumably we went out at the wrong times.

The laundry facilities seemed to be just a toploader washing machine which cost £3.50 a load, and the room it was in could not be described as a laundry. There was no dryer. There is a freezer for ice packs but it was overfrosted and full of ice packs which looked as though they had been forgotten by previous campers. Only packs put at the top froze properly. In the same area there were a lot of leaflets about local attractions, which was very useful.

The site is described as peaceful and tranquil, which it probably is during term time. There were a lot of children on site who played unsupervised on the play area and the tree next to our tent. This was a distinct disadvantage as the children ran from playground to tree and back again playing loud enthusiastic games often until well after dark, starting again before eight in the morning. Even parking the car between ourselves and the tree had limited effect.
The play area had a few swings and a climbing net and the climbing tree gave great scope for those with imagination. In general the children seemed to have a fantastic time and parents obviously felt that it was a safe site, as only the youngest children were supervised.

As has been said before, the washing up area has fantastic views and we met some really nice people over the washing up!

My son and I tried to walk into Combe Martin but the road was very busy and the coast path very muddy in places, so we turned back.

We visited The Big Sheep which gives re entry during the same week at a reduced price.

Linton and Lynmouth are lovely and well worth a visit.

We also went to Clovelly, which was quaint but overcrowded. The film explaining the village heritage was good. The landrover service to get back up again was useful and they allowed disabled visitors a free ride.

We were told that we could only book the campsite for a full week, but this was obviously not the case as people came and went all week. They seem to aim to get everyone to book for a full week but nearer the time if there are vacancies it is possible to book for fewer nights. You do have to book though. Turning up on spec would be inadvisable.

Dogs are allowed on site and the owners while we were there were very responsible. There is a field to walk dogs in.

I would recommend this site for parents with children and the able bodied.

I have to agree that the views from this site are amazing. The site is clean and the showers spotless although the water gets very hot so beware if you have little ones.
Site is a good base to cover North Devon and Coombe Martin has an excellent fish and chip shop. There is a pub which serves good food within walking distance and the prices are reasonable.
All in all this site was nice if a little too structured for my liking. One member of staff is particularly rude. It is true that the site has good recycling facilities although campers are told its compulsory.
We went in a group and had four cars. On arrival we were told to unload our cars and then park all but one of them in another field.
To sum up too many rules spoil this beautiful site.

Agree with all comments before. Lovely peaceful site with fantastic views. Require a car to travel to different places. Bit of a steep climb back to the tent from the washing / toilet facilities but nothing too strenuous.
Only slight criticism would be the lack of hand drying facilities in toilets and would like to suggest availability of mop and bucket in shower area for users to mop floor after shower. However, toilets and showers were very clean.
Clean, dry pitch with electric hookup. Will definitely return again next year. Excellent cycle path (Tarka Trail) from Barnstaple and lots of nice walks along coastal path.

Me, my wife and four children had a great week here, despite the wet first few days. The campsite and surrounding area is superb, fantastic views from our pitch, as were most pitches.

Hele bay just down the road is a very nice place with a lovely cove style beach.

The facilities are basic but very clean, staff very friendly

All in all a great place, well recommended we will return

Stayed on this site for a week at the start of May. These are the best views I have ever seen from a campsite, and the view from the washing-up area was particularly stunning. No arguments over who was going to wash up on this holiday!

The toilets and showers were lovely, and cubicles plenty big enough for my 2 year old to come in with me. There was a small play area, although this is really for slightly older children (who seemed to be enjoying it). There is a really nice theme park next door, which we went to a couple of times - you can return for free if you have your photo taken on the way out. Amazingly, we couldn't hear or see the theme park at all, but it's proximity was great for us.

The only downside for us was that the hedge in front of our pitch meant that I couldn't see the view unless I stood on the picnic bench (I am only 5'), bit most pitches have an unobstructed view. We were at the far end of a row though, which meant that our pitch was very private, and there was no passing traffic at all.

Would definitely return!

What a fantastic site! Great views! Great facilities! Great owners! All has been said before in previous reviews, so I won't bore everyone with repeating things.
The only things I would add are: you need a car as it is a very hilly area for walking and local buses are a bit limited for exploring the area. Watermouth Castle (5 min walk away) is highly recommended for children and is possibly the most bizarre place we've ever been too. Coombe Martin does great fish and chips; great boat trips from Ilfracombe. Fantastic horseriding on Exmoor. M my boys loved the play area and the home-made cakes! We'll be back next year. With a car!

 The Site:

What can we say that hasn't been said already.

The site has wonderful views of the North Devon coast, some of the best I have seen. The owners are lovely and very helpful. The toilet block is very clean and we never had to wait for a shower (although it was Easter week). The washing up facilities were excellent and everyone wanted to wash up as the views made you forget you had your hands in dirty dishwater! The recycling facilities were excellent and everyone is actively encouraged to recycle as much as possible.

The only down side is that the site is very hilly and we were pitched on the top level so each trip to the play area, toilet block and washing up facilities left us needing a beer when we got back! (our youngest is 7 and as we couldn't see the play area from our pitch, we felt the need to go with her, as the walk back up was to steep to keep going to check she was ok).

We will be returning to this wonderful site at some point and would recommend it to anyone that doesn't have mobility problems.

Oh one more thing. The roads on site are not made for push-bikes so although our youngest took her bike she couldn't really use it, so we won't be wasting time or space taking it with us again.

Surrounding Area:

Combe Martin is lovely. We paid to go into the Tunnel Beach, we didn't think it was worth the money and was disappointed with the shingle beach although we did have fantastic weather. A day out at Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park, was expensive and rides were not included in the price (around £45.00 for a family of 5). It was very hilly and two of our party were disabled and we were not informed of the difficult terrain prior to entry, if we had been it would of stopped us going.

Linton and Lynmouth cliff railway is a fantastic day out and both towns are lovely.

We visited this site during a coastal tour over the Easter Period - this was our favourite site! There are no bar/restaurant facilities on this site, but the view is AMAZING!

There is a pub which is a 10 minute walk away (although when we were there it didn't open until 6pm). Be warned, if you decide to walk into Berrynarbor (the neighbouring village) it's all uphill, and it's a very steep hill!

Owners of the site were very friendly and helpful, and they sell a few supplies in the reception (water, milk, bacon, homemade cakes etc) which was very handy.

The toilets/showers were good and clean. Campsite was extremely well priced, with hot water for the showers included in the price.

I would definitely recommend this site.
