This is a lovely site, in a lovely location, with just a few problems which can be ironed out in time, seeing as it is new.

On the plus side: the site comprises one large level field with EHU aound the very edges, hard standing around the circular road, and general tent camping in the middle and everywhere else. This simple arrangement is great for kids, because they can see all the other campers and quickly run up to other children to play, within sight of the parents.

All around are views of the hills and mountains.

It is only a short walk away from Fort Augustus, with shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants, plus a few interesting and easy walks. You can take a boat cruise on Loch Ness from here, or just simply gaze at the view up the huge body of water from the shore beside the many layered system of canal locks.

I really loved this site, apart from the niggles.

On the negative side:

The signage is wrong. They still haven't Cumberland Campsite on the sign at the entrance, in spite of them telling a previous reviewer that it would be sorted soon. We went several miles out of our way looking for the place because of this, and we saw other motorhomes doing the same.

The customer service could be improved. We were charged for EHU on arrival, even though I said we didn't want it, and I had to go back to get a refund. Three members of the family faced me and argued with me about it,because my husband had mistakenly asked for it on the phone when booking.

The check out time is eleven. Most campsites have it at twelve - so why does this place have to be different? AND the toilet/shower block is closed and actually locked between 11 and half past, so if you are desperate for the loo, you are stuffed.

(When I went up to the block, I found a fleece top on the muddy ground outside the door and picked it up. The cleaner came to the door and said she had thrown it there because someone had left it in the gents).

On the shore, right on the shore! Little beach access to loch Pitches at front are sloping, so you will need blocks, probably two sets. 20 minutes walk to village of Invermoriston where there is a shop, hotel, coffee shop and craft shop. Invermoriston Falls are lovely too, just avoid the coach tours by walking through the wood to the Summer House. 'Nessies Lair' immaculate facility serving a good standard of food, cooked to order between 1830-2000. Nothing fancy but excellent service. Pool tables, darts, Sky tv. The facility is brilliant. Two shower/toilet blocks, basic and only one shower per sex, currently being extended and if anything to go by standard of bar area will be immaculate when done.

This site is only in its first year of operation with things like EHU and certain facilities coming “on stream” as the year has progressed. When we set out on our tour of Scotland we were unsure if the site would have EHU for our tent, but on arrival found that this had just been installed.

The site is part of the same business that runs the Stravaigers’s Lodge Hostel, as stated previously, and the camping fields are situated beyond the main lodge buildings. The clientèle were mainly vans and small backpacking tents that did not stay long and were obviously just travelling through. We were one of the only people to stay more than a few days.

The facilities consist of a main toilet and shower block that looks like it will house other facilities like washing machines and fridge and freezer at some point in the future. There are three (free) showers and three wash basins in each unit. Pot washing sinks are outside but under a canopy roof. As all this is brand new it is, needless to say, in excellent condition but there are areas around the block where grass needs planting to make good the ground where all the earth moving machinery has been at work.

The main camping field is on the flat and has a hard core track that runs in an oval shape round the middle of the field. EHU pitches and water points run around the outside of this field. There are some hard standing pitches for vans. We experienced the site in the worst of weather unfortunately (torrential rain and strong gale force winds), and with very few campers given the field size, it left a bit of a bleak impression. After a couple of days rain some areas started to become waterlogged, but did drain quickly once the rain eased of for a few hours. There are no kid’s facilities here.

We got hit hard by gales that blew the day before our departure. Upon arrival in rainy, but wind free conditions, I had pitched the tent simply to align up to the EHU and point outwards to the middle of the field. Broken poles later I now realise that paying attention to the direction of the average prevailing winds will be important here.

The site is situated a stone’s throw away from Fort Augustus and it was a real joy to be able to walk to this lovely place for a drink and meal. The site is ideally situated for Loch Ness, Inverness and surrounding area.

This site just needs a bit more time for it to get going. A few more facilities (that look like are already “work in progress”) and a bit of attention to detail: more refuse points with recycling if possible, better visibility of the water points and better signage, grassing over the areas where building work and pipe / cable laying has taken place. I’m sure that all this will be addressed soon and the site will become a good one and much visited considering where it is. And, when all’s said and done, I think the weather dampened (literally) my spirits a bit here, which was no fault of the site.

Booked in advance and got two pitches next to each other on the Loch side. The views were awesome, the weather not! The warden was very helpful and friendly and gave lots of local information. The local village was in walking distance and very picturesque.

Fort Augustus is a must do. The whole area is beautiful and the site well worth a visit. The bar was nice and the food reasonable value for money.

Cracking campsite as a stop off near Loch Ness. It's very quiet with lovely scenery nearby.

It's very new so everything is clean and tidy and all the facilities work.

It is close to the very picturesque town of Fort Augustus, so there are plenty of pubs and eateries nearby. I can recommend the Lock Inn and The Bothy in particular. There are a few nice walks to be had inc. Along the 'Caley' canal.

Lovely campsite and lovely little town. I've been twice now and will definitely be back.

The previous reviews given are pretty accurate, although the kids play area is now open. It is just a strip of land alongside the Loch with the road up behind you, but that was not a problem.

Personally I wouldn't stay here for a week's holiday, it is a nice place to stop off and you are right by Loch Ness, one of those things you have to do. Surprised there weren't more sites in the area. Only one amenity block open while we were there, just two showers and not very powerful, but everywhere clean.

We didn't use the bar so cannot comment. No minumum stay when we visited during the week, although the Scottish schools had already broken up for summer.

Lovely site, lovely location. Toilet blocks were clean but basic. A very uneven site with most pitches slopping towards the loch. Unfortunately, we arrived on a Sunday evening and the bar was closed.

Early evening the electric tripped in our row and myself and others went looking for the warden who was no where to be seen. It wasn't until after 23.00 that he appeared with the owner and systematically isolated the fault which was a foreign camper van.

We were left for some 4 hours in the dark as all electric site lights were out. The owner and warden were very apologetic but this does not excuse the fact that there was no help available to campers.

Two adults stayed in a campervan for two nights at the end of June with electric.

ON ARRIVAL:

Campsite easy to find and looked friendly and inviting on arrival. I had contacted the site beforehand to book our stay and the man I spoke to seemed very nice and recognised us when we arrived.

PITCH:

Incredibly lucky with our pitch. We were right on the loch-front and only the second one in from the wee path down to the gravel beach. The pitch was gravel. I do think the pitch was an okay size but then we didn't have an awning or car so we have a bit of a skewed opinion on that.

LOCAL ATTRACTIONS:

We drove up to the Clansman Hotel, had a meal (very tourist orientated obviously but we had to compete with a bus tour which meant service was a bit slow) and then went on the Jacobite Cruise which was brilliant. Didn't see Nessie though.

FACILITIES:

The toilets were not brilliant but certainly not horrendous. I think I have quite a low level of expectations as I do festivals with portaloos. They were kept reasonably clean and well-stocked.

The pub was nice but we only stayed for a few drinks, we didn't eat there.

CONCLUSION:

This was our first time out with the campervan on our own. Although this campsite will stay on our holiday list, I think we might try another one in the future to compare.

First arrived at this site in 1998. There have been a lot of changes since then. My visit in June 2010, is the first time I have been at this site for 6 years.

The views of the Loch are wonderful, its a peaceful and quiet site, it always has been.

I was surprised this time, to find all the grass covered over in chippings. Many years back, there were extensive playing areas for the kids. These have been removed to make way for more stone and wooden holiday chalets. There is one small area for the kids to play, but it is restricted. There was a lot of work, ongoing, to improve and extend the shower and toilet blocks, during our stay. Our pitch was big enough, but caravan legs were fully extended, and on sat on blocks, to cope with the slope.

The bar is nice, and the staff very friendly.

The staff at the site were really friendly, Tiffany who cleans up & works in the office in the mornings then comes back on the night to work in the bar, a lovely girl with a great sense of humour & a excellent personality & Paul the site warden meeting & greeting people & showing you to you're pitch, I swear that blokes running on Duracell batteries, he just keeps going.

The site is brilliant if you're looking for a bit of peace & quite then this site is definitely for you apart from the occasional low flying jet up & down the Loch.

The toilets & showers are really clean & well looked after, there's a laundry room around the back if required & there's a bar that serves meals as well I liked this site when I visited it a few years ago & I fell in love with it this time I really didn't want to leave & come back to Birmingham.

Should anybody ask me to recommend a place to stay in the Highlands I would definitely be recommending this Holiday Park.
