A small site in a great location, within easy walking distance of Wincle, Wildboarclough and Lud's Church. The toilet block is small but adequate for the site (one male toilet, one shower). As others have said it gets busy on a Bank Holiday but we didn't have any problems getting on. The rest of the time it's very secluded. The pub does great food and opens late.

We visited the site during the bank holiday. It's a small site there were 2 couples in our group plus Mel the dog. Lovely setting, views are brill but a little windy, the pub and staff are friendly and Elvis is well and truly alive and frequently plays at the Wild Boar - Great night. Facilities were clean but unfortunately due to the water coming from a bore hole and the site being busy, water was limited during Saturday evening, Sunday and Monday morning. Site rules are no noise after 11.30pm but it's not one of those sites that throw you off if you fancy a bbq at 10pm and we sat out talking until the early hours, so good for couples that don't want to be in bed at 9pm. Nice walks to the Ship Inn in Wincle and the Hanging Gate, go to the Hanging Gate first they sell a little book of walks for £3, come out of the site turn right take a right at the cross roads up a country lane and keep going along that road (about 2 miles in total). No shops in walking distance though so if you don't want to be driving make sure you take everything you need.

A small (smaller than I realised) site in a stunning location. In my opinion there were too many units on May bank holiday weekend, all tents but us. There is really not enough room for ball games but these were going on. The water supply failed and there was no apology for this. We thought the price of £10 a night was a bit much, bearing in mind that there is no EHU. There are 3 loos and basins in the ladies but apparently only 1 in the mens, and 2 showers in all. You have to leave your car in the car park (probably not at quiet times). We will not go there again, which is a shame as the area is beautiful.

We have just returned from a weekend at this lovely campsite. The owners should be commended for not overfilling the site for the bank holiday weekend. The pub is welcome and warming with log fires constantly warming its guests. We were tempted to an Elvis tribute at on Saturday night which made for a lively evening. The site itself only caters for couples and families which ensures a pleasent, friendly atmosphere - and more importantly quiet nights. The washblocks were kept clean although a water shortage limited shower usage at times. Our pitch was ample in size and the whole site was litter free. Overall I would rate this site very highly and will definitely be returning in the near future.

We stayed here at the weekend (3rd and 4th March 2007). Tremendous location with magnificent views and friendly and helpful hosts. Although the weather was changeable, we really enjoyed our stay.

I agree with the review from Piddster, dare I let you know how wonderful this place is. This was my first experience of camping and it was superb. I am not your 'basic' camper and believe me this met my needs. Showers are installed, toilets on site. And the owners are extremely proud and hospitable. They don't allow groups which helped (apart from the herd of cows who kept us entertained throughout). Altogether a pleasurable experience which has led me to unbelievably purchase a tent and a stove (who me?) Give it a visit.

I have just returned from a tour of the Peak District with my family. First stop on the list was the Wild Boar camp site. I must say that this is a gem of a campsite with elevated views across the countryside. The on-site facilities were basic including an outside toilet and use of the pub toilets but for a night’s stay this was more than adequate. There was however a toilet and shower block on the edge of the site which was in the middle of being connected to the mains supplies and should be up and running in the next few weeks according to the owner. The field on which we camped, although small, created a good atmosphere with fellow campers and was safe for the kids to play. The pub itself had good character with a separate games room with pool table and jukebox. It happened to be a ‘free’ pool night which kept the kids happy. The pub had a classic rock band playing the same night which was tied in with one of the local’s birthday from what I could gather. The band was highly entertaining and of the quality that I would expect to pay at least a fiver entry fee if they played at the venue back in my home town. The current landlord and his partner took over the running of the pub and campsite earlier in the year as a new venture and seem to have the perfect setup. They were very welcoming and friendly. The landlord has not yet employed a chef at the pub however they provide a selection of homemade sandwiches and crisps etc. and breakfast baps were available on the Sunday morning at a very reasonable £1.50, just what the doctor ordered after a night’s drinking!. All in all a great start to our holiday and we look forward to going back. PS thanks for the tent pegs!

Mentioned previously this is a basic site with no showers and only one toilet although it looks like some new toilets/showers are mid-construction. The views from the camping field are lovely and despite being only 15/20 minutes from Macclesfield you feel you are in the heart of the countryside. However, this pub was taken over 5 months ago and the website for the pub was actually the previous owners’ site and does not really apply anymore. Despite the introduction above, the pub does not sell food and has only a limited choice of beers. There is no longer a small shop either.
All of this could be forgiven because of the views and the prospect of peace and quiet and we spent a pleasurable Friday here.
The Saturday, however, was totally different. The pub had a band playing on the Saturday night (which incidentally we were not told about when we booked) and the band plus quite a lot of groupies (all late teens/early 20s) were all staying on the campsite. There were also a lot of other large groups of people that age. The outcome of this was that there was constant football taking place - some people even started playing football again after leaving the pub at midnight, although I’m not sure how they could see the ball in the dark! We anticipated some noise for about an hour after the pub closed but were not prepared for the noise to continue until 4.30 a.m. Nor for the abuse received when asking the culprits to show some consideration for other people.
The owner did refund us some of our money when we complained, however, he did not go over to the group responsible for the disturbances. Apparently, the pub plans to have bands regularly on a Saturday so keep this in mind. Conversely, The Ship Inn in Wincle is a lovely little pub that serves fantastic food and is definitely worth a visit.

The current landlord of the pub has only been there with his significant other about 3 months. I'm a little loathe to publicise this place as it was fantastically quiet when we went to stay for a Sunday night. It's within an hours drive for me and my wife, but with views like this I would certainly drive further, but the fact that it is so close meant that for one night, lack of a shower block wasn't a problem. The local area is stunning, and it is amply viewed from the field at the back of the pub. At the moment the pub isn't specialising in food but if you don't feel like cooking around your camp you don't have far to go to find a decent eatery. The welcome is warm, the views are amazing and the price is stupidly low, this will change when he gets his shower block and facilities organised. I fell in love with this site, and will definitely be back again. As much as I liked it quiet, I feel a sense of duty to try and help the owner because of how comfortable they made me feel, so if you have a couple of days free and fancy chilling out with the most breathtaking views at your tent door, and a great country pub just yards away, do yourself a favour and go visit the Wild Boar.

April 2005 We had a superb night/day here. As others mentioned it is a fairly basic site at the moment, but, it is a fantastic spot. The owners are really welcoming and friendly.
Spent a most enjoyable evening in the pub where the locals made us feel very welcome as well. (Had a spot of car bother and the landlord went out of his way to help us out).
If you want a quiet spot, with beautiful views, and friendly people for £2ppn then this is worth a visit. We self catered but the pub also serves food, which is always a bonus.
