Anyone thinking about a trip to Devon for long or short stay, regardless of unit, we would really recommend this site! Clean, welcoming, friendly, helpful, tidy, kids area, beautiful views, dog walking area, small on site shop, well maintained grass areas, big pitches, electric hook up available, lots of water points, lovely clean bathrooms, toilets and washing up areas, ice pack freezing facility available (20p), superb value for money!
Site was quiet when we stayed but I would imagine that you would need to book for school holidays as it is such a good site.
Woken daily (and quite early) by a truly wonderful dawn chorus made up of so many different birds it was hard to distinguish most of them, unfortunately the local cockerel joined in alongside the pheasants. Also the first night that we were there I found the local church bell woke me up as it does ring rather loudly on the hour, but soon got used to it and it didn't wake me after that first night.
Showers are lovely and hot. Hairdriers in the bathroom, very effective but they are 20p a go so take plenty with you!
No disposable BBQ's allowed at this site - worth getting a small portable/folding one which we did (about £15 from Sainsbury, B&Q etc).
Best local pubs to visit for dinner/evening in a pub garden are without a doubt 'The Bowd' and 'The Blue Ball'. We enjoyed dinner at both of these pubs and while they may not be cheap and cheerful, (about £12 - £15 per main course) the food is superb, filling and fresh and staff are very welcoming. Also local ales and ciders! We don't have kids so didn't pay particular attention to play areas, but 'The Bowd' has a lovely play area at the front of the pub.
Site is well placed for lots of attractions including donkey sanctuary, Crealy adventure park, Exeter, South devon Railway, also lots of lovely coastal towns including Seaton (with the tram rides), Sidmouth and a lovely sandy beach at Lyme Regis but be warned, it is a VERY steep walk back up that hill! Leaflets provided in the washing up area for inspiration.
Would definitely stay here again - actually, looking at this as a stop off point for a couple of nights next year when we may go on to Cornwall.
Thank you for such a lovely camping experience, hope to come back next year!

Directions are a bit confusing stating third turning at the top of the hill, but it is 2nd turning. When we reached the site it was very clean and tidy with plenty of space within the two fields,
The only problem I found was the toilets and shower facilities. There was only one block for the site and and extremely long walk if you are in the bottom field, you would certainly need a portable loo during the night especially if the weather is not clement, they could certainly use another block for facilities in the bottom field.

What can I say, this is a very well kept camp site.
The directions from their website are a little confusing (follow the brown tourist signs as you come up the hill and you can't go wrong), but once found the site is excellent, even though it was bank holiday weekend there was plenty of room, never a queue for the clean toilets and showers, the staff were extremely helpful and friendly and the pitches were large enough to accommodate an 8 man tent, porch, car and trailer.
The beach is a pleasant 20 minute downhill walk through country side, however it is a good 40-45 minute walk back mostly up a steep hill. The village is picturesque, but sadly no pub (nearest is a 5 minute drive down the main road, not really ideal for walking to as there is no footpath). The on site shop sells essentials, but there is a Waitrose and Lidl in Sidmouth (about 10 minute drive) plus a small Co-Op and Tesco metro.
Sidmouth itself can be walked to over the cliff path, which is well sign posted and maintained and gives excellent views over torbay (takes around 45min to an hour). Sidmouth itself, is typically seaside, though not tacky with an excellent safe beach.
Only downsides to the site is that there is only one facilities block, so if you are pitched at the bottom end of the field, it is a bit of hike, and the field itself gently slopes (but so does all of Devon) so don't expect bowling green levels. All in all the site lives up to it's sign post ('the site for the discerning camper').
If you want a perfect seaside site, with bags of space for the kids to run about, near a decent seaside town, with lots of pleasant, safe walks, this fits the bill perfectly. Definitely on the list of places to go back to.

This was our first visit to this particular area and it was our friends who picked this site. We turned up mid afternoon and it began to drizzle and so many people came and asked if we wanted help putting up our tent.
Everyone on site was so friendly as were the staff who were also very helpful. The campsite had a lovely atmosphere and the tents were nicely spread out giving a good area of greenery for children to run around in the middle.
The showers and toilets were very clean and Hot, as was the dishwasher area. There was a little playground for the children and another large space for them to run around with balls and kites.
It was a lovely weekend and we will be returning.
Some lovely pubs in the local village and a waitrose supermarket about 10 mins away.
Overall very spacious and clean. Perfect for a short break.

This was the second time using the site and we would certainly return again. The pitches for tents are spacious and marked out so no-one should encroach onto your space. Some of the pitches are fairly sloping but nothing that can't be put up with. There are plenty of cold water taps around the camping field.
The shower block is always clean and on both occasions we've been there, they've never been too busy - loads of showers in both male and female blocks. The wash-up facilities are great too with plenty of room.
The staff keep busy and it's clear they take great care of the site which is immaculate.
This site has probably the best 'dedicated' dog walking area we've seen with free bags and doggie bins.
There's good walking around the site, with easy links onto the South West coast path and it's within easy walking distance from the Donkey Sanctuary.
There's a Waitrose just outside Sidmouth and a Tesco just outside Honiton, as well as a Spar in nearby Sidford.
The children's play area was popular with the five year old kids we were there with.
All in all, this is an excellent site, highly recommended and we'll be going back again

We have just returned from this site (2 adults, 2 5 yr olds and a 2 yr old) and absolutely loved it.
Vry well maintained, staff very friendly and the toilets etc were always very clean. The review before that said there were 3 toilets and 1 shower had obviously never visited the toilet block behind that had another 3 toilets and many more showers.
Family with us had a dog and they were very pleased with the dog walking facilities.
You can easily walk to the donkey sanctuary and there is a lovely chip shop nearby.
You can renew your freezer blocks in the on site shop as well.
I would recommend escot as a day out if you have young kids but see if you can get the Devon 2010 booklets from the tourist office for a discount on kids entry prices.
Overall - I would say it is a great site at a good price and I would return!

I enjoyed my weekend stay on this site. I hadn't booked, but was given a choice of available pitches and was asked how near/far I wanted to be from the facilities.
As the previous reviewer mentioned, there are plenty of showers, toilets, etc. There was plenty of hot water and the facilities were clean and tidy. There were also several sinks for washing up. I didn't use the shop, so can't comment on how well-stocked it is.
The site is well located for walking - a footpath runs through the site.
The dog walk area was well laid out - and with bags and bins provided, it has obviously been well thought out.
My only criticism was that, although I was given a choice of a couple of pitches once I had selected which area of the field I wanted to be in, someone else arrived a few hours after me and was given the pitch that I didn't choose, meaning that we were right next to each other, even though there were plenty of vacant pitches around us. I'm not sure why we were both put together in that section of the site when it seemed that we could have been allocated pitches a bit further apart.
This was a friendly, well-run and well maintained campsite.

A lovely campsite, well looked after with good clean facilities, walking across the fields to the Donkey Sanctuary in the sunshine was unforgettable, with refreshments available at the cafe before the walk back,
We did not find it as easy to get to the coast on foot and sadly gave up before we reached it as you needed to be really fit.
We did notice that the site became very noisy on the weekends when families moved in with their tents but in the week very quiet and peaceful.
Our pitch had a lovely aspect but the ground was unlevel and had to use bricks and blocks to level it.
A well stocked shop and within easy reach of all the great places on the South Devon coast.

A favourite of my parents, we visited this pitch recently. It is a well kept site, with limited facilities. The park is central, which was great from where we were pitched, as we could see them from the van.
The kids enjoyed it, but not for hours on end. Lovely walks from the site, beautiful scenery. Toilet block, as stated previously, very dated and only one shower in the ladies. Clean though.
Not allowed to have a washing line, which is frustrating, as there is then no-where to hang damp towels, so this is a problem. There is washing lines by the toilet block, but I would not want to leave towels there daily.
Compared to our previous destination, we felt we were quite close to our neighbours, although not troubles by this, pitches with hedges in between would be nicer! But I guess that is more unusual.
Overall, we like it, clean, friendly site, but would be unlikely to go back again, as there are more places to explore.

We arrived on Good Friday, literally minutes after a torrential downpour so everywhere was very wet! Registration was very efficient and we were shown to our pitch and helped on by very friendly warden. Managed to get set up in dry and then had a week of excellent weather.
Site is very good and although views are limited there are lots of walks nearby. Along the lane to the Donkey Sanctuary is just 10 minutes. Site facilities are OK - loos and showers quite dated but perfectly clean and never had to queue.
Shop sells basic items but there's a Waitrose on the main road out of Sidmouth just 5 mins drive away. No pub within walking distance but if you go down the road to Branscombe The Miners Arms does fantastic food, is dog friendly and the front terrace is a real suntrap. We enjoyed the week and would definitely return to the site if visiting the area in the future.
