Annstead Farm is just that - namely a working farm midpoint on the coast between Beadnell and Seahouses that boasts two campsites: one a field for about twenty-odd caravans; the other a 'walled garden' with a neat, manicured lawn for the exclusive use of adult campers. We chose the former, mainly because we preferred its more open aspect with more space on pitches to spread out.

As well as water taps located by the farm buildings and an elsan hole by the main gate, the amenities block is located centrally to both camping areas, although it can be quite a trek to it from the furthest end of the main field. There are male and female toilets and showers and a washing-up station with coin-operated washing machines. The showers are 40p for eight minutes.

My own personal view is that I really don't know why campsites charge for showers nowadays when most units have their own hot water systems anyway. Does it not cost the site owners at least 40p for me to have my caravan's water heater running for two hours to heat up water for a shower, using the electric I've already paid for?

Annstead is a working farm, so expect some noise from farm vehicles, as well as from livestock in the adjacent shed (although it is never so much as to be intrusive). One thing we did notice though was a distinct whiff of something eminating from the septic tank that the elsan point feeds, although mercifully it was localised to around the elsan point itself.

The Northumberland coast is truly one of England great unsung gems, encompassing breathtaking scenery, magnificent imposing castles, and pristine (and frequently deserted) beaches comprising miles of golden sands. Indeed, across the road from Annstead Farm is a long stretch of beach with rock pools that is ideal for making sandcastles, catching crabs and romantic strolls at sunset.

Meanwhile, Beadnell has a delightful harbour and a safe, sandy beach, Seahouses has a harbour with boat excursions to the Farne islands and a Co-op stores for stocking the larder. Further along the coast lies Bamburgh, with its towering castle and more expanse of unspoilt beach. Although the villages are dolloped with double yellow lines, most of the locals seem to ignore them. Besides, there are also free off-street parking placed available.

Further afield, Alnwick has shops and a disused railway station that now houses a huge, second-hand bookshop. Berwick-upon-Tweed - England's most northerly town is just over twenty miles away, whilst day trips to Newcastle and Edinburgh are the ultimate option for rainy days.

All told, Annstead Farm is a superb base for exploring Northumberland and is worth considering when planning to do just that.

We booked a week at Anstead Farm as a late change around in destinations for half term mainly as a child, some 40 years ago I had friends who lived on lindesfarne.

We were pitched in the 1st pitch on your right as you entered the main field. The pitches are amply sized and reasonable flat, although inclined to get a little soft when we had heavy rainfall.

The site itself is ideally situated as a centre to explore the Northumberland coastline.

The main plus point for us was the sea was a 10 minute walk, if that from the site and the many surrounding places of interest and plenty of room for children to play.

All in all a great place to stay and we will definitely be returning without a doubt availability permitting.

Sue. Keep up the good work!

Have stayed here on at least 6 occasions this year and can't wait for the winter to be over so we can return.

We've found everyone on the farm to be friendly and as for for previous comments about noise - well what did you expect on a working farm???

At £17 per night including EHU and awning this site is excellent value. Can hardly grudge 20p for 4 minutes in the shower at this price!

Location is ideal for walking into Seahouses or Beadnell or just playing on the beach.

A big thank you to the owners for a fantastic season at Annstead Farm. See you all next year :-)

Can't fault the site, location, cleanliness etc. BUT. I hope the owners will read and consider my comments. I felt that some of the many notices pinned up, particularly in the womens' toilets, were unwelcoming to most decent, considerate campers. One - displayed twice - requested that campers refrain from putting their feet on the walls. Do many retired, law abiding owners of expensive outfits who make up the bulk of campers at this time of year really make a point of intentionally dirtying the walls ? I imagine that to mischievous children the notice could even be an incentive to be rebellious and ignore the request. Another notice explained why there were no spare toilet rolls. Apparently, they had been disappearing. What is the cost of an occasional toilet roll, against the income the campers bring in ? Other campsites do not speak to their guests as if they are all potential thieves. In actual fact, the owners appear to have relented on this one, and there were plenty of spare toilet rolls, but the notice was still there. So, please, Annstead Farm owners, take the notices down and welcome your guests as they would like to be welcomed - as decent, considerate people, not potential hooligans !

We booked this site based on the reviews on here.

The site is easy to find and is well located within easy reach of of Seahouses and Bamburgh. There is beach access across the road (a busy B road) from the site.

We booked into the 'walled garden' which is the adult only part of the site. The gate into the walled garden is fairly narrow, so you if you have a large motorhome or caravan, you will need to pull wide and go through the gate straight on.

The pitches were fairly level and a reasonable size. There was a marker on each pitch, but the pitches are not clearly defined so, people seemed to pitch wherever they liked with no respect whatsoever for neighbouring pitches!

The walled garden has one unisex shower and toilet (the washing up sink is in the same place) The shower takes 20p or £1 coins. The coin meter is outside the shower cubicle, so make sure you put enough money in or you might end up going out in your towel while someone is washing up!

The signs around the site were not particularly welcoming. We only saw the site owner once when we were paying. We didn't feel welcome at all. It was more like they were doing us a favour by allowing us to be there!

We stay on many farm sites, but the noise from the farm vehicles (just behind the wall) from early morning to late evening was very intrusive.

On the 'upside' you will find all you need in Seahouses. There is a fairly large Co-op, a good bakers, greengrocers and cafes, pubs, fish and chip shops!

In summary: £17 per night plus 20p - £1 for a shower, plus not feeling very welcome. We wouldn't go back.

This is a tranquil site, well situated just off the road from Beadnell and ~15minutes walk to Seahouses. We stayed in the Walled Garden part which is even more peaceful with lots of space - only 8 hook-ups allowed. At £1 extra/night giving £17/night, we thought this was a good value deal. The Site is well kept, part of a working farm and has a second, larger field for families. This never seemed crowded either.

With a regular bus service along the coast, its easy to get out and about in this lovely area. We walked down the coast towards Low Newton one day and took St Oswalds Way back from Belford on another. Both lovely walks in warm sun. The latter gives a good chance to explore Bamburgh Castle.

Our only negative was that the toilet/washroom facilities in the Walled Garden are rather limited. There's one room with toilet, bowls for dishes and washing and a shower all in one space. If washing in public was a difficulty, or the room was in use, then you had to go over to the main area.

What can we say about Annstead Farm? It is a delightful site. One of the best, if not THE BEST campsite that we have stayed at. No, it doesn't have the fanciest wash block with heated floors, or a playground to leave your children at, but what it DOES offer is a great location directly opposite one of the best stretches of Northumbrian coastline and fantastically large pitches on level well maintained grass, in a large walled/fenced area and there is also an 'adults only' area. My teenager who never leaves his 'gadgets' even played Frisbee in the field. It is great how our family dog is welcome and he loved the beach walks. This is a working farm, so one should expect everything that goes with that, but how nice to still see a working farm. You do need to take extra care with little children when going from the camping field to the wash block as farm machinery is being used, but there is a gate from the field and children wouldn't go unaccompanied.

The owners are very friendly. Children can ride their bikes around the camping field and campers can play ball games/rounders/cricket in the centre in peace (which is lovely to see as not possible with some stuffy sites). As you turn up, there are clear instructions with your name and what pitch you are on (and this was the same three years ago) - so we are unsure why the negative comments from some reviews, with details of how to pitch.

The wash blocks have been modernised since our last visit 3yrs ago and do offer two showers and two toilets for each sex, but as you are on a beach site you will expect sand in the shower tray etc, other than that they were very clean, plenty of loo roll and I'm sure if there was a serious problem Sue would not mind it being mentioned. There are also a handful of rental cottages which are very nice which family rented which worked well if people want to be on-site but not camp. Highly commended. This is not a commercial site with a 'reception' and 'shop' and hopefully will stay 'just the way it is'. Perfect!

 Positives:

The campsite has great location with a beautiful sandy beach through the nature reserve/dunes a few mins away, idyllic countryside to the back & a very peaceful spot. Pitches v large & basically situated in a large field at back but there is a 'walled garden' for vans. 2 modern, clean toilets & showers & 3 wasbasins for each sex.

Negatives: lots of (free) water at sinks but excessively hot-kids be careful! Nowhere to hang towels at sink if having a quick wash at basins (resorted using the floor)

Meters outside showers so need to undress, put money in and whizz back to get you moneys worth(not ideal!)20p per 4mins. Plug socket in utility for hairdryer etc (charged also)

Laundry room with washers/driers at an £1 per 30 mins so you need to do a calculation as cycles various odd lengths & will stop dead mid cycle if your time is up! my washer did not spin properly, but so had to put another £1 in for 10 min spin - v annoying & pain you can do without on your hols to be honest. No reception or shop, no kids play area, no service for cooler packs which was a major issue for us.

Whilst Annstead is in a lovely spot, We are not sure this site warrants the 'luxury' tag - not for tent campers anyway.

Shame about this site. It could be a fantastic site. Just a few changes and I wouldn't have to give such a negative review.

When we arrived there was nobody around to tell us where to go or where anything was. We had to rely on the other guests to show us how to find our pitch from a notice next to the gate, also where the water etc was. The pitches are a very good size but we had no idea of how we were to park so we just kept to the middle.

There were only 2 showers and 2 toilets per sex, which are no way near enough. There were 24 pitches in our field and around 8 in the walled garden. Most pitches were being used and a lot of them tents with no toilets of their own. You were lucky to get a shower and as they were only cleaned once in the morning and there were no buckets and mops they were filthy by the evening. I do not feel they were worth paying for so did not use them in the end. Luckily we were only there 3 nights.

Apart from the negatives, the site was in a wonderful area with a beach close by, a boat trip round the farne islands is a must to see the sea lions and puffins.

Because of the lack of facilities and absence of any help from the owner we will not use this site again.

We chose the best week of the year so far. Mostly sunny & dry but cooler than the South.

Fabulous site, well run & tidy within a 600 acre farm. We were allocated the walled garden which is a bit tight when all 8 pitches are occupied. No problem with the facilities as we always use our own. We would have been quite happy with the farm field where each pitch had loads of space.

The owners and their family are delightful with time to talk, especially Grandad (88).

Lovely beach across the road. Walking distance (20mins) from Seahouses. We ate at the Links Hotel, no ambience but was very good. The Ship Inn is lovely so pop your head through the door and have a look at the bar, it is something else. Good fish & chips at Pinnacles.

We had a lovely trip to the Farne Islands but check some of the other trip operators on the quay, we used Billy Shields but we felt that his boats were very crowded. This is due to him having the most publicity.

Visit - Bamburg Castle, Ford & Etal, Berwick rampart walk, walk from Craster to Dunburgh Castle, Craster Kippers. Alnwick Gardens, Beadnell, Grace Darling Museum (free), Holy Island (check safe crossing times).

You will love the area!

Be wary of the 10 amp supply on the electrics, not a problem if you balance your usage.
