We visited Bank House Farm four four nights over the may bank holiday. As we booked at the last minute we were located in the 'bank holiday field' which was up quite a steep hill from the facilities. It was quite a walk to and from, but good for the old calf muscles! There were no set pitches in this field so we could go where we wanted and although it was a little windy and exposed at times, the views were lovely. The main part of the site by the river looked great but we weren't too keen on the second field over the bridge and to be honest, we were glad we weren't located there.

The facilities were a little basic but were extremely clean and well looked after. As it was bank holiday and only two showers each for men and women there were some queues but it was nothing that wasn't to be expected and we learnt our lesson the next day and went down a bit earlier. In fairness the shower block probably needs expanding with more showers and better wash basin areas but you couldn't fault what was there for cleanliness. Also there seemed to be one shower at busy times in each of the mens and womens blocks which alternated between freezing and boiling which was a bit of a shame as it got a bit nippy waiting for the hot water to come back again. However, in the grand scheme of things it certainly wasn't the end of the world. Facilities-wise there were plug sockets in the ladies toilets for hairdryers etc, a decent size fridge/freeze for storing ice blocks and also a tumble dryer.

All in all this was a great site if, like us, you want a truly relaxed camping experience rather than a more 'holiday camp' feel. The site itself was ideally located for the Manifold trail which was a couple of minutes bike ride away and definitely well worth a visit for either walking or cycling and the scenery was beautiful. There's a shop and a pub right by the site entrance and while we didn't try either ourselves, we did speak to someone who said the pub food wasn't great and was overpriced. Wayne and Alexa are lovely and extremely helpful and nothing seems too much trouble for them.

Overall, I'd say if you were looking for luxury this probably isn't the site for you, but if you're looking for a nice friendly, relaxing campsite with beautiful views then you'll love it. We will certainly be going back.

We stayed here on Friday and Saturday nights in a 6 man tent with 4 adults and 2 dogs. We were given a great pitch next to the river.

This is a great site, it was a lovely weekend when we were away, so it was pretty full, however I never had to queue for the showers, of which there were 2 for both male and female. These were kept really clean and are some of the best I've come across camping in the UK.

The surrounding countryside is fantastic for walking with so many routes to go for. Hartington is a couple of miles up the road and is nice place to wander round, with a couple of pubs and cafes.

The manifold inn, the pub opposite the camp site is nice, it has good beer on tap and serve;s decent meals. Although we were told it was dog friendly we were told we couldn't take our dogs in when eating as it was too busy.

Our fellow campers were all also very well behaved and there was very little noise after 1030, which is good as it seems like a very family friendly site.

The only thing I would mention is that the dog walking field was not in use when we were there, as the owner was grazing cows. However, this may have been because it was getting to the end of the season.

All in all it is a very good site and we would definitely go back.

Very attractive spot next to a river in a picturesque village. No toilets or wash facilities in the field we stayed in, the walk up the busy road probably isn't that suitable for those with kids. There is an equally pretty field next to the toilet block though.

Friendly host and clean but small washroom. I know not everyone takes their hair straighteners camping, but it would be useful to have access to sockets for those who do.

Best bit about this campsite is the brilliant pub just across the road. Very reasonable, tasty homemade food (recommend the great chips and salad over the veg/potatoes if you get a choice, plus the treacle pudding was amazing). They also do a full cooked breakfast with a brew for a fiver, you just need to book in the night before.

Only negative is the road really is busy from about 5. 30-9am with tractors, lorries and cars. Aside from that, very nice spot

We stayed here for 4 nights and was overall a little disappointed, which is a shame as Wayne is nice guy and very helpful but you'll have to dig deep to get the answers you want rather than the ones you'll hear.

Before we left I called to confirm availability and to see if camp fires or fire-pits were allowed, 'as long as they're of the ground then that's fine' was the response there's even a pic of a camp fire on their website.

The availability was that the field across the road was empty with no bookings, the river sections on the main site were all booked.

Upon arrival we were told that the whole corner of this field was booked by a party from Friday to Sunday. When questioned 'what sort of party', the answer was 'they're all over 50', what a load of tosh, what arrived were groups of 20 somethings with generators running, a kid on a mini moto type bike but give them their due they were quiet and generators were off after about 3hrs of constant running, note the sarcasm here.

Wood burning is a complete no no here and signs were everywhere despite asking before we arrived, which if I'd have spotted before pitching, we would have driven away.

The site itself is basic, the showers are no frills and clean, plenty of hot water is available, I can imagine that the showers couldn't cope if the site was full as there are only 4, 2 men and 2 ladies.

The site is split by a very busy B road which is busy from around 5am till gone 9pm. The pub across road served honest food and beer and was pretty good.

The surrounding areas are lovely, the stepping stones at Dovedale are a must.

My only other gripe with the site is that they charge more for a dog than a child, all sites we've been on, dogs are free, this 'extra' put our nightly pitch fee to nearly £20 p/n, when considering its mid Sept was rather high.

We had the pleasure of visiting this site for a few days last week, we are very seasoned campers and found it one of the nicest we have been to. We pitched by the stream which was very pretty. We had a lovely relaxing few days. The campsite is kept neat and tidy, nice large pitches. The dog walking field was a lovely extra, enabling our labrador to have a good run. The area is great for walking, nice pub at the edge of the site and local village store if needed. Lovely clean showers and toilets. The owner, Wayne was very helpful and friendly and we would certainly visit again.

Very friendly owner who obviously goes out of his way to ensure everywhere is clean etc

Two ladies toilets and showers which were very clean and free! Also the showers were hot which is always good!

I believe the men's were great too.

There is also an extra toilet which is fine, it's clean has soap and lighting. The main toilet block has a code which is great to stop kids messing about or people from other sites using them. The extra toilet doesn't have a code and the owner has obviously tried to make the best of an old out house. Which was more than adequate.

He has also gone above and beyond giving people free use of tumble dryer fridge freezer and an area to keep dry where you can borrow books. He has also information leaflets from the local area.

Beautiful site with a river running along the campsite. It cost £17. 50 two adults one child and a dog in a small tent. For the area that's fair.

The toilets are up an incline good exercise! There is also a washing up sink etc and water point there too.

We only stayed one night as we were visiting relatives. We would return as owners attitude to the campsite excellent and he obviously cares about his site!

The Manifold Inn. Beautiful food, friendly staff, dog friendly and very welcoming.

We stayed here for 2 nights on the 2nd field (no electric), a very popular site, we arrived in good time and was able to pick and place our tent.

Was a bit of a trek to the toilets and showers(5mins approx) and had to cross the road, which could be busy) but the owners were very helpful and friendly and we were allowed to run our dog in the dog walking field which is a good size.

The pub was just across the road from the site and was very friendly. We visited the information center which was very useful, loads of places to walk. Luckily the weather was good with only a few showers.

Feel with a bit more development meaning they could do with more showers as two for females & two for men just wasn't quite enough.

We will come again, had a really good weekend.

If you don’t fancy regimented pitches and notices everywhere, this campsite is for you.

The owners have worked hard to make the camping experience here as “hands off” as they can.

We stayed in a “satellite” field which had a drinking tap in one corner, and no EHU. While this might seem a bit spartan for modern “glampers”, there was a village shop 200 yds away and a super pub the same distance in the opposite direction.

The toilets and showers (cleaned regularly) were adjacent to the house and main field, up the lane from the pub by a further 50 yards or so. Somehow the mild privation of walking a few yards with the washing up bowl bought campers together, with morning greetings on the road between strangers refreshingly common.

If you need electric, the main field has only a few hook-ups, but next season this will be addressed. The owner went out of his way to get folks camped on the driest fields. Even after the wettest of months there were still some pastures which coped with cars arriving and departing without becoming a quagmire.

Loads of great places to visit nearby, too much to take in over a weekend, so I will definitely be making a return visit.

Just returned from an excellent stay at Bank House, Hulme End. Wayne and Alexa were wonderful, kind hosts who helped our caravan rally raise over £1000 for Leukaemia & Lymphoma research by staging a Duck Race. A lovely site - wonderful views and setting by the River Manifold. Facilities are superb and good amenities close by - Manifold Inn, well stocked shop and the Manifold Valley Visitors' Centre. There are walks and cycle rides to do, maybe a bit of pond dipping in the river and you're still within easy reach of Hartington, Longnor and market towns like Bakewell, Ashbourne, Buxton & Leek. I would very strongly recommend this site to anyone whether camping or caravaning - it's ideal!

Firstly, It's a little unfair of me to judge this site, as it was our very first experience of camping, so we have nothing to compare it to. Suffice to say, we loved it, and not only will we be camping again, we will definitely return to Bank House Farm.

We nipped in while passing, the week before our visit, just to have a nosey, and the owner, Wayne, could not have been more accommodating. He gave us 'a guided tour', and answered all our questions, which were plentiful of course, being complete novices.

Due to the weather, the main camping field was closed, in order for it not to get bogged up, so we were in 'the second field'. Basically, a reasonably flat field with a stand pipe, and a walk of about 80m or so over the road to the amenities block. Bear in mind, this is a quaint village with one pub, one shop. This is not what you could term a 'main road!', so the stroll is rather pleasant. This suited us fine, as we were not wanting EHU, and were told that we could spread out as much as we wanted, (no marked pitches) in order to try out all our nice new shiny gear (we ended up taking up almost 14m x 6m, including guys and windbreaks, but not including car, and all for the standard rate of £15. 50 per night.

Pitched on the edge of a babbling river, sheltered by trees, and surrounded by approx 2 x dozen other units, all nicely spread out, mainly tents and trailer tents, some a lot bigger than ours.

The atmosphere was perfect. 2 or 3 small groups of kids running round doing what kids do, but behaving themselves, having fun in and by the river, the odd game of cricket/rounders well away from others' tents. There's no playground/amusements etc, which was why this place was at the top of our list.

We fell asleep to the sound of the river, which was a good 3m from our 'bedroom'. No other noise could be heard. In fact, apart from some fellow campers having a Saturday night fire-side-guitar-playing-sing-song, which sounded quite good to be fair, (and finished before 11pm) we heard no music all weekend. Which is all good in my book!

Back over the road, on the main site, the amenities amounted to a covered area, with a couple of washing up sinks, tourist leaflets/notice board, what seemed like a library of books and games for use by the campers, and of course the showers & toilets. As far as the gents goes, it was all fine. Dated maybe, but very clean. I saw no queues, but then I went early evening. Two loos, two urinals, two sinks & mirrors, and two showers.

Hot water at every tap and shower, all free I may add, and a more than adequate flow rate. Probably the only negative was that whilst the shower room had, in theory, room for you to step out of the shower and get dressed etc, (plenty of hooks, by the way), there was no protection between shower cubicle, and shower room, therefore, the floor got wet (there was a raised mat to stand on). Further investigation led me to a decent mop and bucket by the door, so I took the liberty of borrowing it! Having mentioned the wet floor problem in chatting, Wayne is fully aware, but its a big and expensive job to put it right, so as long as we are all prepared to mop up after ourselves, the rest will look after itself!

I can live with that!

The place was welcoming, clean, and served it's purpose!

Literally opposite there is what looks like a typical country pub, which not only does food, but also campers breakfast, if ordered the night before. Unfortunately we didn't sample it this time, but will give it a go when we return!

The village shop is at the other end of the field (So maybe 100m or so from the main site). Again, we didn't use it, but I did see someone heading back with the Sunday papers. Again, I promise to try it out next time!

Just a two minute stroll takes you to the start of the Manifold valley. Something to do with hikers apparently, so although I haven't a clue what it is, I guess some of you will be pleased it's there. I believe there is a tea room involved too, so it certainly sounds nice!

In summary, we are a couple of city dwellers, rapidly creeping up on our fifties, who fancied going camping. We didn't want to go too far (40 mins for us), we wanted basic amenities, away from the playgrounds, swimming pools, and family entertainment, with the option of a country pub, some greenery, some peace and quiet, plenty of room to spread out and experiment with our gear, sanitary ablutions block, and a friendly, welcoming host.

We got what we wanted. And we want some more!
