First time my hubby and I have been camping for thirty years. Armed with a new tent bought two weeks previously we waited for some good weather which we had ( we don't do rain by the way ) fair weather campers that's us. Not sure what to expect we really enjoyed it. The camp site was good, pitched by the lake, what a view. Sat early evening having dinner with a glass of wine and when when it got dark the lights across the water were magical. The toilet block was good and clean and the washing up sinks big enough. Plenty of hot water. We will no doubt stay here again after trying other sites so we can compare them as this is our first outing. The only criticism was I thought there would be more grass to pitch on but I suppose being late in the season its been well used

Myself and my boyfriend decided to take a 3 night break at Low Wray after reading other reviews of the site, and I have to say, we enjoyed it thoroughly.
As other reviews have mentioned, the site is very basic. There are 2 showers and 4 WC's but there were never any queue's to use any. Apparently the site can home upto 200 tents - maybe the facilities would be a little overstretched at this capacity, however, it was fine.
We decided to pay the additional £5 per night to stay on Ramsomes field, and it was worth every penny. What better way to spend the evening watching the sun go down over Windermere ?? Absolutely worth every penny.
There are plenty of things to do in the area. In particular we decided to do a boat trip and a walk (walkers ticket), we caught our 1st of 3 boats from Ambleside, back towards the campsite, but were dropped off at Wray Castle (which isn't really a castle!) It's a NT property, so members get in free ;-) We then walked 4 miles to the car ferry, which took us to Winderemere where there are plenty of shops etc to look around, before getting ferry back to starting point. (Parking was £3.50 all day.
Other than that, campsite had adequate facilities for washing up, and there was even a laundry room. There is also a little shop, but opening hours were a little short, think it was about 12 - 8pm. But we didn't need to use it anyway, there is a COOP and a Spar in Ambleside which are adequate (if not a little pricey - but expected in a tourist area). There are also plenty of restaurants in Ambleside, but i'd advise booking if your going out, there were no tables left at the local Thai on a Tuesday eve at around 7pm, so take out it was!

Just got back from our most recent & longest visit here & had forgotten how basic the site was. No hairdryer or plug for my straighteners - oh no! It doesn't take long, though, to get into the laid back mood (or wear a hat!)
The site is extra special for me as there are no caravans, just tents & a few motorhomes, and I also like the fact that you don't park next to your tent which avoids cars driving around the pitches. The opening hours of the shop are a bit of a drag (lunch til 8pm) as I'm not very good at planning ahead & buying my milk the night before. The staff are really friendly though.
We've only ever stayed in Vic's Meadow which is small but well located near the lake. We had a walk to the other part of the site & that seemed equally relaxed. The best pitches, though, seemed to be the 'large groups only' part amongst the trees altho there seemed to be a few families pitched there??
Wray castle is worth an evening stroll & Grizedale is a really good day out, especially for families - the playground is pretty impressive & there's also Go Ape.
Another good spot for families is Brockhole on the other side of the lake - we pre-booked a canoeing & raft building session there & had loads of fun.

We stayed at this campsite over the Mayday weekend - 2 families each with 8 yr old boys and 5yr old girls - and had a wonderful stay.
We paid the extra £5 to camp on the banks of Windermere, which was well worth it. We arrived on the Thursday and had our pick of pitches and so pitched right next to the lake. I think that this is the site's USP and it would only be worth paying the extra £5 if you can get this close. The other fields aren't that far away from the lake either.
There are only two showers in the ladies (free to use), but somehow we didn't need to queue even when the site was full. The block is quite basic, but seemed to be cleaned several times a day as there was never much mud. Strangely there are two hooks to hang things on in the toilets, but only one in each shower - not sure why!
The wardens were very friendly and did enforce the 11pm quiet rule as I think some campers were asked to leave after making noise the previous night.
Ambleside is full of things to do, come rain or shine. We particularly enjoyed fish and chips at the Walnut fish bar - very fresh, and our pizzas at Zeffirellis (need to book). Zeffirellis is actually veggie, which concerned our menfolk at first but they enjoyed their meals nonetheless.
We'd love to return to Low Wray, but only if we can arrive slightly off-peak to guarantee getting a pitch - sadly you can't book, and with small children we daren't take the risk.

Myself and two friends spent the May bank holiday at Low Wray and I have to say very impressed. The site was well laid out with seperate camping areas, we stayed at Ransoms which is right next to Lake Windermere, this costs an additional £5 per tent/per night, but well worth it in my opinion. The shower/toilet blocks are basic, but to a good standard and kept clean and tidy. The outdoor washing up sinks were very good and always plenty of hot water whatever the time of day. Also a good outdoor boot / kit washing tap as well. Plenty of car parking space (although you do have to pay £3 per night for car parking). The wardens are very good and regularly patrol the site, a no noise after 11pm rule is enforced. I noticed on two occasions the wardens assisting new arrivals in selecting pitches to suit their needs. The site shop is small but has everything you need including certain small gas canisters.
The surrounding area is very easy for bikes and walkers alike. Ambleside and Windermere are 20mins away in a car, a little furthur afield is Hawkshead which had its own very large single field campsite. There are two local pubs, both very very good. However we got caught out on the Sunday as we didn't book a table so be warned! (we found a great pub called the queens in hawkshead instead).
The site does get full very quick, we arrived at 1pm on the friday and the site was half full. So please pay attention to the first come / first serve rule issued by the site.
The whole area is peacefull and inspiring for adults and children alike, pay a visit here as it's too good to miss.

This is the second time we have camped at low wray. We love camping here because it is in a beautiful location and you really feel like you are getting away from it all. Facilities are very good, toilet & showers cleaned once a day.
The children's play park is very good we couldn't keep our kids off it, also the lake on site is a bonus we took our blow up dingy on the lake which the kids also loved & the view of the lake at the evening is spectacular.
The camp shop is handy selling basic essentials and some camping equipment, we bought our first camping kettle from there on our first camping trip 6 years ago and we are still using it now.
You can also freeze your freezer blocks for a small charge in the freezer in the shop.
We would camp here more often but being in the lake district it does rain a lot and last time we camped here it rained really bad all week and we had to go home early, but when it is sunny I can't think of a more lovely place to be.
Of all the camp-sites I have camped at this has to be the best and I would recommend it to anyone.

This is a great site on the waters edge of Lake Windermere. We stayed for one night and managed to pitch easily on a small field. It was sloped so some pitches were a bit boggy but there was room to avoid it. The facilities are quite basic but adequate. Good location, easy access to local attractions and pubs. Will be staying again.

Hello, I have been camping at Low wray campsite for almost 20 years now, sometimes 2 to 3 times a year, my two young children of 3 and 9 have also camped here every year for periods of up to 2 weeks each visit.
Although this may not be every ones ideal holiday,it is certainly great for us. The campsite itself is a huge and in my opinion, well maintained site, without losing any of its surrounding natural beauty. It hasi n total4sepperated sitesinone location, ransoms, whichissituateddirectly on the waters edge, you willpay apremiumof£5 extraper nightper tent,(Iwontcamp hereunlesspushed as Iwontpitch under tree's) thenyou havevicks meadow whichis my all timefavouriteas you areon anopen field, yourkit dries outmuchquicker, andyou arestillavery short distance fromthe waters edge.Thereis another site(the name I don't know), still avery nice site, buta bitof a trekto the water, esspecialyif likeme youhavekayaksanddinghies etc. Thelastpart is the group sitewhichleadsdown to a differentpart ofthe water, I believe this ispart isdesignatedto larger groupsthat need to bookin advance, there are no restrictionstoroaming throughthe different sites.
Low wrayis a fantasticplace for anyonewho wishes to enjoy thebreath takingviews, there are plenty ofwalksto thesurroundingvillageslikehawkshead and ambleside,up to thecastle which is situatedjust abovethe campsite, and iseven nowopen tothe public, only thegroundfloor isonview, canbequiteborring but its steeped with history, beatrix potter livedthere for aperiod of time and would youbelieveit wasbuiltby a scouseguy LOL.You canalso follow awalk along the waters edge to the ferrycrossing thatwill take you tobowness(50pfor footpassengers each way or£3for acar, eachway). The walkto the ferrywillprobably takeyou anhour?
Low wray issuperbforaccessonto windermere,so if you enjoy swimming, kayaking, oreven a bit of relaxing fishing, then this is the ideal location for you, thekidslove paddling across to thebrockhole activity centre which is situated betweenwindermere and ambleside, brockholeoffers a very large outdooractivity play area, vast gardens, and adescentcafe with good food, be warned,if you go by car you have to pay and display, but still worth every pennyfor the kids to have a good day out.
Thetoilets are ok, they are cleaned out every day, but by the timetheyhave been used afew hundred times before youcome to use them, well, its not always a pleasurable experience! butyou shouldn'tlet this put you off, I've seen far worse on other campsites which are supposed to have 5 star rated facilities. The same goe's for the showers, there not that bad, they could just do with a few slight improvements.
There is a seperate area outside for washing your pots and pansand even asmall room with a washer and dryer for doing yourlaundry, these are expencive and don't really do a good job, but they aretherepurely if you need to doan emergency wash.
There are 2 pubs that are reasonably local, the drunken duck which is about 2 miles away and the outgate which is about 3 miles away, both reasonably nice pubs.
The staff areok and will do whatever they can to help, but they are very busy and it can at times seem like there notinterested, they wont hesitate to turf off unruly people.
There is a small play area for the kids situated on vicks meadow, and although there's not much there, there is never a short supply of other friendly kids, infact its one of the only places I feel comfortable letting my kids of the reign
, they love it.
Now for the downsides!
You cant be gauranteed to get onto this site so its wise to have a back up plan.
£3 per night to park your car seems a little bit of a rip off.
Having to pack away by 11am can be a bit of a hassel.
And like everywhere else, you will come across some idiots who don't care much for the other people around them.
Hope this is of help to someone
Happy camping

Just got back from Low Wray what a lovely site. Views outstanding the NT staff are so helpful. The site is very clean apart from early in the morn when the bugs seem to want to drown themselves in the sinks! All in all if its your first time camping or your 1 million time this site is just the one for a good old chilled and relaxing time

Excellent and well run campsite. We stayed in the 'overspill' field, so it was a short walk to the lake. Clean and nice and quiet, the way a camp site should be.
Superb location, the only downside was that we couldn't book in advance so just had to turn up at 3pm and hope we got in, not a good idea on the Friday.
Facilities were pretty basic although the toilets and wash area were perfectly fine. Will go back soon, just hope we can get in.
