July 2004 I've been an occasional visitor to Low Wray Since the 1980's. This beautiful site has much to offer, I personally choose Low Wray for the access to the lake and there's nothing to compare to the view accross the lake first thing in a morning. As for the location, you are well away from any main roads, the site is well maintained and you are within easy distance of Coniston, Hawkshead, Grasmere (well worth a vist)and Ambleside.

July 2004 "See it is a beautiful campsite ... just not the bit we're on." It would have been a lovely stay had we been able to camp next to the lake (which was the reason we chose this site). Of course this wasn't their fault however as they were contending with a burst water main at the time.
The fishing is non - existant, if you want to fish be prepared to wade out about 10 meters and then get your line out about another 30 because it is so shallow around here that unless you have a boat there is little chance of catching a fish, however, the waterside is lovely.
Hot water for washing up is great, especially as it and the showers are free. Very nice surroundings, wardens are strict though and at times it can feel that you are an animal in a safari park with them driving past in their landrovers looking at you every so often.
Ambleside is a lovely town with plenty of amenities, a traditional market every wednesday, a cinema and a library with internet access (where we are writing this from). There are plenty of places to eat and shop and many free or low cost tourist attractions nearby, including Wray Castle, the Lake District Visitors Centre and the launch for many of the lake cruises.
Overall a very nice campsite that we would consider coming back to, if we could get by the waterside. It is genuinely a beautiful place and when the sun shines it is almost perfect. Do not expect to get anything of nutritional value from the onsite shop, instead go into Ambleside where they have Spar etc.

June 2004 and June 2004 We really enjoyed this site, isolated enough to be quiet and close enough to the facilities of Ambleside for shopping etc. We have camped on Vics Meadow on both visits, although there are lakeside pitches under the trees, the latter being very popular although we thought that it wasn't wise to camp under trees because of sap/raindrops etc. If it is very busy there is a field nearer to the main gate that is used. The site is well maintained, although the grass can get a little long at times on Vics Meadow, a bit of a problem when wet! The toilet / shower blocks are cleaned daily and there is always hot water on site - especially useful to soothe those aching limbs as well as cleaning those greasy dishes. There is a little playground for the kids and a little shingle beach next to the lake which is enough for the kids to splash about in. One thing to say about the site is that the wardens will accept no messing about. We had an incident with 3 loud drunken yobs at 3am. I mentioned the time to them on the way to the toilet block to be met with a reply of "thanks for the time check mate" and they just carried on... Everybody was chatting about it the next morning but it seems we were the only ones to say anything to the culprits. Meeting the wardens later on our way out, I mentioned the incident to them - result, they were instantly ejected from the site!!!! And there they were thinking of sleeping in the sun all day getting ready for another all night session... So if you want a decent little site in the heart of Cumbria, at reasonable rates and well located, this may be the one for you. But word of warning, it can get very busy so a telephone call is wise.

April 2004 Very good on the whole. Toilet and shower facilities great! No plugs for hairdryers though, which meant that us women have to walk around with wet hair, and catch a cold!!! Shame that the cars have to be so far away from the tents! a bit of a pain, but luckily we managed to find a spot next to the car parking area! Not sure if I'd visit in holiday or busy seasons, because there didn't seem to be that much room for cars and tents, and it could become very cramped! Lovely countryside and lake, and not far from Ambleside town. On the whole a brilliant weekend break in a lovely part of Cumbria.

august 2003 Very pleased with the site & all the staff we spoke to were very friendly and polite. Two slight problems that we feel could be improved upon are 1)the shop is a little distance away from the actual camping area(I am disabled & found this a little disheartening)2)please,oh please put a freezer for freezing ice blocks near to the camp area. But all in all we enjoyed our stay very much & will be back Trev & Yvonne cleveland

May 2003 A bit disappointing. We were impressed by the NT website but less keen on the reality.
The area by the lakeside seems a little quieter but you have to carry all your stuff from car to pitch, since NT don't allow cars on the grass anywhere on the site. For families without a trailer (which can be pulled by hand to pitch) this makes carrying lots of stuff (maybe we have more than most!) a problem.
The lady on reception was not particularly welcoming or friendly though the chap who cleaned the toilets went out of his way to help us.
Be aware that there is some kind of young people's activity centre adjacent to part of the site. On one night we were kept awake for much of the time by very excited teenagers who their teachers seemed unable to quieten down.
If you want peace and quiet, don't go anywhere near the children's play area.
We were disappointed but we are very fussy about peace and quiet. Others might not find these kind of factors problematic. The "no noise after 10" rule is adhered to but sometimes you wish that some people had an idea about raucous laughter earlier in the evening (we have young children who we try to get to bed early).
We did email the NT but had no response.

May 2003 Stunning surroundings, one of the best features of the site is the ability to pitch right next to the shore, definately worth a visit. Transport is needed if you want to see more of the lake district during your stay but the walks are not too demanding. One other gem is the pub... The Drunken Duck which brews its own ales and has a good restaurant also.

We have stayed at this site on numerous occasions. The areas on which you can pitch run right down to the lake shore and are on the whole fairly level. We have awoken in the morning to open the tent and watch swans and ducks gliding past - fabulous! The views are outstanding.
There is a slipway for lauching small craft, row boats, sailing dingys, canoes etc. and we have been know to be swimming in the lake at 11.30pm! Quietly might I add! This is not a site for the rowdy, although we have always chosen to use the 'family' area rather than that designated for groups.
The toilet and shower facilities are reasonable, although it has to be said, not great. Especially when the midges start to bite! Areas for washing up - again reasonable. The small shop at the entrance to the site is very useful, stocking a variety of essential food and non food items.
The site is somewhat isolated and a car is handy to reach some wonderful nearby pub restaurants, although hardy walkers do not seem to find it a problem to get from A to B.
It goes without saying that we have really enjoyed this site and will be returning!
