We stayed on the lakeside field. Wow what a beautiful view, over the lake to Ambleside. The pitch was 20ft from the lakeside, ideal for launching our canoes.
There is a nice play area for the kids which felt safe. The kids really enjoyed playing in and around the lake on jetties and beaches in relative safety.
Only downside was you can't take cars onto the field so you have to carry everything the 100yards or so from the car. Some pitches were closer to the carpark than we were. Will definitely take a luggage trolley next time. It did make the field a nicer place to stay be with no cars though. There is a 6M area between tents which meant you had loads of room and felt quite spaced out. Great for our dog too as he is quite large and had room to move around on his long lead.
The NT website isn't too clear about it but there is no launch fee for canoes.
The shower and toilet blocks are very centrally located and quite new. They were usually very clean and not too busy.
The reception and shop building is also quite new and very smart. The shop is limited in its stock and ran out of milk and bread a couple of times.
The nearest shops are Hawksheads co-op, chemist and post office or many more in Ambleside.
All in all a really good site and we will definitely return.

Visited this site over the extended royal wedding bank holiday weekend. Our first visit - had tried to stay in pre-online booking days but campsite always full when we'd tried - so expectations were high.
Good points - we had a great pitch in the woodland - very peaceful. Site, as other people have mentioned, is in a beautiful location - its close to Ambleside but felt a long way from bank holiday lake district hecticness. Our kids are a bit young for boats but if that's what you're into think this site would be fantastic.
Bad points - I was a little surprised, bearing in mind its national trust, at the number of low level niggles I had with this site.
The play area had quite a bit of out of order equipment - it was supposed to have been new for Easter but I'm guessing this wasn't the case.
Loo blocks could do with more frequent cleaning - I never saw anyone clean our nearest block and am guessing (from having seen the same bits of rubbish around the sinks for over 12 hours) that they only got cleaned once a day - which just wasn't enough for a bank holiday weekend.
Ne of the loos seemed to be leaking (fresh water) so floor (of whole block) constantly wet and got very dirty. Queues for showers (better in other blocks so I ended up walking a bit further to those).
Washing up area also had a leaking outflow so you had to be careful not to get a soaking when you pulled out the plug. We were in a quiet spot but waking up in the night to deal with kids loo trips I did hear noise from other parts of the campsite - didn't get the impression some of the rules were enforced.
A disappointment that I hadn't realised was that you can't directly access lakeside walks from the campsite as adjoining land is privately owned - you can do lovely walks (including to the out gate inn) - but do have to make a detour round to access the main stretch of lakeside walking - its not a long way but meant not an option for post dinner stroll with kids before bed.
Overall we had a lovely weekend in great weather but, although I thought I would love this site, this won't be my first choice for our next lake district camping trip.

We visited for two nights over the royal wedding bank holiday, there was bunting aplenty on some tents.
We find the campsite easily enough and there was a friendly member of staff on hand at the gate to direct us where we needed to go to get to reception.
At reception another friendly staff member and we were ready to start pitching our tent.
The pitch was a good size but half of it was quite stony. A number of our plastic outwell pegs, having been fine at Malham the week before, we decidedly the worse for wear after ground conditions here. The pitch (no. 55 in Vic's Meadow) also had a fair slope on it, which not all do. We also found Vic's meadow to be pretty windy all weekend, whereas the pitches in the woods were much more sheltered.
A short walk from the lakeside, with lots of small stony beaches to sit on and throw stones in the water with our little boy, a really lovely idyllic spot.
The shop was stocked with essentials, and some luxury items too, although we only bought a loaf, two choc bars and a drink, seemed good value and was open at useful times.
Showers, toilets and washing up facilities all really clean, well lit and worked really well. 5* for a campsite on this measure.
Full recycling facilities on hand, just a shame that some people still seem unable to separate their waste even when it is made so easy for them!
The children's play area was a little worse for wear with a few parts clearly having been removed very recently (piled up rotting timbers!). The remainder was good for older children but was much too big for our 3 year old to enjoy on his own. There were a few nice paths around the play area through the woods which we all enjoyed.
The site was quiet at night and all the other campers well behaved. All in all a very nice campsite and we shall be back, but maybe when there's less wind!
We paid £27 per night for 1 large tent, 1 car, 2 adults and 2 under fives.

We visited this site in a snowy April. Although our tent blew down in a gale in the night we had a fabulous time.
The site was wonderful though. We loved the location of our pitch and the fact that the children could run and expire in the woods round the site.
The staff were friendly and discreet. The site was clean and well managed yet allowing us to feel that we were not being watched and monitored.
Our pitch overlooked the lake and we were able to observe lots of wildlife. The arrangement of the pitches allowed us to feel we we camping in a wood alone. Admittedly due to the bad weather it was very quiet.
We would definitely return but perhaps in the summer!

We stayed here for 3 nights on what they call a 'medium woodland lake view pitch' the week before Easter. We booked over the internet the day before and were slightly alarmed by the high price, which included a £5 internet booking fee. And everything after the tent and first person is added as an extra and a £10 premium for the view
We are a family of four with two children aged 7 and 9 yrs, and the pitch was everything it claimed to be and was worth the extra price. The view over the lake towards Waterhead is stunning and the site is of a high standard.
We had canoes with us and it was great to be able to canoe almost straight from the tent. On the their website it states you need to pay to launch 'a boat' at the site, however, it is worth noting, as it is not clear on their website, that this is just for larger craft, such as sailing dinghies, there was no problem launching canoes from anywhere along the shore within the site.
There is a rustic play area that the children could walk or cycle to.
The toilet facilities were excellent and very clean.
During our stay we had a walk to nearby Wray Castle and boat house which I would recommend for a short but pleasant walk.
We did have issue with noisy neighbours on the last night up till well after 12am, but don't let this put you off as I don't think this is the norm, the site doesn't allow groups larger than 4 adults and there is a strict no noise after 11pm. They showed disregard for both these rules having moved together from their allocated pitches. Not sure how the site staff monitor this or enforce the rule however. The neighbours did apologise in the morning.
Over all I would highly recommend this site.

I love this campsite for the location, however there are things about it that could be much better!
We booked well in advance as this site being a national trust site, and for the price we paid, I was expecting great things!
We opted for a small woodland pitch, which turned out to be a small woodland 'cove' suitable for 3 small-medium sized tents leaving the obligatory gap between them for fire safety. On our 'cove' there was already a huge tent on one side and a small 1 man tent on the other so we had to go in the bumpy, uneven and wonky middle pitch. It wasn't such a big problem once we had got the right place. The car park was full near the pitch (3 cars were from the big tent next to us so we had to park a fair walk from the pitch which was a bit rubbish as well.
Facilities on site were basic and often busy. Hot water was an issue in late morning and the evening and appeared to be a first come first served basis - although not sure.
On saying that the site was lovely, close to the lake and close to ambleside. It was a more 'rustic' camping experience which we enjoyed but I can imagine its not for everyone. We certainly wouldn't go back with our dogs and child.

I visited the Low Wray National Trust campsite on the last weekend of March, just as they were opening up for the season.
Only part of the site was open as they were still finishing off a refurbishment programme that provides a new reception/shop and utility blocks. The refurbishment is due for completion in early April 2011. As this was the first weekend of their season, the shop had not been stocked up. One staff member told me, when I arrived on the Friday, that they had only been open for a couple of hours.
I camped in the woodland where all of the pitches were individually marked. Some were in small groups, with others more secluded. There were also rules that tents were to be at least 6m apart, giving everyone plenty of room.
Although the utility block that I used was new, there appeared to be some teething trouble with the hot water, such that I had to use hot water from the gents to wash my pots and pans. Lets hope they get it fixed up before they get too busy.
I certainly will be visiting this site again, as there is plenty to do in the surrounding area with all of the Lake Windermere attractions on the doorstep.

We stayed for one night arriving on Saturday afternoon and it was pretty empty. I had stayed here as a child with my school four times a year for five years so was excited to return. The National Trust has bought the land off the school now which was a bit disappointing at first but once we were settled into our campervan pitch by the stream I was well chuffed. The site is now quite vast and split into two areas: the open field and the woodland, with a stream running between the two.
The site now has three brand spanking new toilet blocks with washing facilities and washing machines ready for the summer traffic! We had a very warm welcome from the staff members both in the reception and out on the rounds. The shop was located in the reception but we came prepared.
There are no shops near by so buy everything on your way in if you’re not staying for long like we did. We paid £13 for one night.
This is now our favorite site and are already planning another trip.

Stayed here in one of the new ish camper bays near to the river that leads into the lake
Good site super quiet shop a tad on the expensive side so make sure you take all you need with you
Great for the kids on the bikes and lake access yards away so great for the kayak
The staff are also very helpful and toilets are cleaned often but are very old and very basic but do have piping hot water
It looked like there was some new building works underway, toilets shop etc so will only get better
Will be back next year 'at least once'

Really felt the need to write how wonderful we found this campsite to be. On arrival we were greeted by very welcoming and friendly staff who checked us in within minutes.
We couldn't believe our luck with the pitch we were given which was within 50 yards of the lake! Excellent views across the water in a very peaceful setting. (By the way the local ducks love to come ashore and say hello!) Tents cannot be within 20 feet of one another and all fell silent every night from 8ish even though this is a family orientated site. The walk from car park to sites is within easy reach, just be prepared to make a few trips if you take too much kit like we always do!
The toilet block was clean and always well stocked including hair-dryer and shaver sockets.
Washing up area was always clean thanks to fellow campers and staff, and hot water was aplenty.
The site is a secluded spot but within 10 minutes drive of Ambleside where we recommend a visit to the White Lion in town for a nice meal and the Wateredge pub right next to the lake for a Guinness. Little tip - parking is free at rear of pub for patrons only and saves paying to park at the car park around the corner. Also really recommend a trip to Wray Castle which is within walking distance of the site, for some fantastic views of the north end of the lake.
Overall would strongly recommend this campsite for couples and families alike. Great spot and looking forward to going back again!
