We spent the jubilee weekend at Low Wray after they opened the spare field as an overflow area. This site is fantastic as you feel as if you are in the middle of the lakes. The scenery is almost Truemanesque it is so perfect.
The site is clean, very well spaced out varied. When it was windy I wished we were pitched in the woods where it was sheltered but when it was sunny I was glad we were in the field.
The site is on the side of Windermere and you are able to launch small craft. I thought the toilet blocks were great but my 'teenage' son did not feel the showers were warm enough to meet his facial cleansing routine needs.
There is a great playground for younger children and a really lovely walk around the site. Over the weekend there was an orienteering trail if you fancied joining in. The sinks for washing up are adequate and there is a good site shop.
This is an expensive site and for this reason it would not have been my first choice if we had given this weekend more thought before it was virtually upon us. As previously stated you cannot take your car onto the pitching areas and for me this was another downside. I would not have minded moving the car once we had pitched.
There is a short walk to Low Wray castle and a lovely drive to Hawkshead where the pubs serve excellent food but book in advance.

Just back from an excellent weekend at Low Wray. The site is very well managed and quiet beautiful in the woods. We camped in Woodhouse field which is right on the edge of the site. On our next visit we will ask to camp in the woods.
The two play areas were well used by our kids. They also found a rope swing and were very happy just to wander through the woods. Wray castle is a good wet weather plan if needed. The kids can dress up as knights and princesses. The grounds of the castle are very beautiful as is the lakeside area.
We ate at Outgate Inn which was good food. For tremendous food visit the Drunken Duck (you will need to book). Another great find was a cafe Chesters by the river in Skelwith Bridge.
We will return as there is a lot to do and see in the Lake District.

Have stayed here several times, lovely quiet quite basic small site with 'eco friendly' loos/showers (use 'green' chemicals in your porta potti to preserve their bio tank system!). Not suitable for large units or if you're looking for electric hook ups, facilities and entertainment, club houses etc. This site is really about being around nature - love it! Toilet/shower block basic but clean (cold in winter!), what you need though. Run by friendly National Trust staff who enjoy canoeing and are happy to spend time telling you all about the wildlife and surrounding areas etc. View of the lake from tent pitches, and if you have a small/walkers tent you can pitch right next to the shore in seclusion, lovely! We have a small VW Campervan so stayed near shower/loo block (next to lake) on hardstanding parking area, with views through trees to lake. Great for walking/hiking/canoeing/fishing. A drive to local towns, shops and pubs etc. But lots to do in area, canoeing (launch from campsite), boat trips from nearby towns, visit Beatrix Potter estate, Ambleside is a lovely old town with interesting shops, restaurants (check out the Mill restaurant/cafe with mill wheel in place). Other lakes and places to see near by. Magical area to visit.

We have just returned from a lovely 4 night stay at Low Wray campsite. It was my first time camping with my partner & I must say I was pleasantly surprised. We stayed on pitch 119 in “Whitworth’s Meadow”, which is just a standard pitch, near to the Teepee area.
When we arrived the guys at reception were very friendly & told us where to go, although we didn’t get a map of the site which I thought was odd (we later went & asked for one & they gave us a standard one from the Kids pack that they provide). We drove around to where our pitch was, parking was very close but not on top of you which was good. We were very unlucky, as our pitch was on a dreadful slope which really is the only thing I have to complain about.
The showers & toilets were hygienic & considering there are only 3 blocks for the whole park (which is large & quite spread out) the wait was never too bad, I only had to queue once. The floors got muddy when it rained but they were never smelly. The showers are free & of the type you get at the swimming baths (press a button & water comes out for a bit) but there was always hot water, the pressure & temperature varied a bit but we were never scolded or freezing cold. There were only 3 showers in the ladies block nearest us & 2 in the men’s, but as I said, we both only had to queue one day.
The site itself was lovely, and very obviously National Trust, they have not made it commercialised, although there is a kids play area & some water activities, it just feels like tents in woodland and a field. I would not have wanted to stay in the woodland area, it did get very muddy when it rained & the tents did seem a little close together. One thing I would say is if you really want a lake view then you will need to pay for it, the lake is not quite as on your doorstep as the website makes out. But it’s a nice walk to it and it is a great view when you get there. The shop is in the reception area, it has basics but is very expensive, and you also need to pay for putting your freezer blocks in there, 20p a block which seemed a bit steep.
There is a catering van on site near the reception/shop which sells all sorts of locally produced food (burgers, bacon sandwiches etc, as well as other meals) we didn’t eat there but it was a nice touch.
All in all we had a really lovely time, it possibly was a bit on the pricey side but we would definitely go back there, as long as we didn’t have a sloped pitch! I would also say you will definitely need a car, as nowhere is really within walking distance!

The main attraction of Low Wray is to be near the lakeside of Windermere. We took our folding boats for a couple of weeks and had a great time (10 year old & I) exploring the lake and the rivers leading off it. Care is needed to make sure you get a pitch near the water. We were ideal - 50 yds away and able to leave our boats ready rigged by the waterside. The beach was a bit leaf mouldy but fine. Another part of the site has a pebbled beach - if I came again I'd try to get a pitch there. The view over the lake was better there to.
Facilities are pretty good. They have their busy moments like all large sites but was never a problem.
The shop was useful but generally expensive. So most of our shopping we did in local stores in Ambleside & Hawkshead. They did let us charge our big batteries in the shop free of charge which was nice (using our own charger of course). The on site catering (high end burger van) was so expensive we didn't use it and hardly saw anyone else use it. There's a sit down fish & chip shop in Ambleside if you're looking for a budget non-cooking evening.
The playground was much enjoyed by the kids. Had we not had our own boats, the on site canoes for hire would have been a valuable asset.
They have orienteering maps for kids to do round the site which was fun.
The staff were very friendly and helpful. I was worried beforehand that the NT might be overly bureaucratic in their management but this seemed groundless.
A great base for exploring the lakes. We did several mountains while we were there including Helvellyn & Striding Edge which my 10 year old loved. Rainy day outings are much in demand - our favourite was the Aquarium at Lakeside.

Stayed for 2 nights at this beautiful campsite during the Windermere airshow weekend. The site is beautifully located with pitches being well spaced apart. The new reception area also stocks the basics, ie; milk, bread etc.
The staff are very helpful. An added bonus is an on site cafe run by Yew Tree Farm providing not only breakfasts but also sandwiches, picnics and a great selection of hot meals all made from locally sourced meat etc, fantastic!
The facilities I understand have been recently refurbished and were of a high standard. The only problem I have is the fact that spiders and their webs are not being brushed away from windows and ceilings so I imagine in a few months time it will be rather unpleasant for people like me with a phobia. It really doesn't take much to brush them away regularly, this was my only complaint.
Had a walk around the site and noticed that the children's play area set in the woodland looked very exciting. There is access to the Lake at several points around the site.
I would definitely stay here again at this peaceful and relaxing site.

Due to arrive 19/07, as out of mobile reception, only received a message on the day that shop/reception was to close for staff training at 3pm when meant to arrive.
Rang back and arrived early - booked pitch was double booked (not great)- guy had reception was however very helpful and got a better pitch (would have been a nightmare if reception had closed).
Toilets and Showers were a distance from 'lake view' - only two showers and three toilets at nearest facility - but others available over camp site.
Lovely views, parking away from tent was a pain when arrived in rain but ok if could find parking.
Is a premium price and more suited to families - lots of kids walking by tent all day. Was worth a visit - pitch under trees, good in the bad weather but limited if sunny.
Hard hard surface on pitches, stones, so had the rugs out which got super muddy.
Liked it, but for me not worth the premium price for a return visit.

We have stayed in this campsite for 3 nights. When I booked this campsite for our bigger tent, I was given only grass fiel option, so I thought maybe all the pitches by the lake were already booked. But there were lots free.
We even asked at the reception if it would be possible to get a pitch by the lake, they said we booked for large tent and they don't allow them by the lake. But we saw that there were even bigger tents than ours. So it did annoy us. If we will be coming back there, we know pitch numbers by the lake, that we will request.
Otherwise, toilet/shower block was good, newly done, clean. Always hot water available. The grass field was not flat, but nothing too bad. It is narrow road to get to the campsite and the reception is open just on certain times, so you have to be on the right time or you'll be waiting.
Ambleside village is a few miles away.

Visited this site on the spur of the moment and what a lovely spot it is - rained all weekend but didn't spoil the trip - nice sheltered site and well drained.
Midges are rife in the wooded area but the bats do their best to eat them all and smokey BBQ's help!
Great spot for canoeing expeditions - we launched onto the small river running through the site and paddled down onto the lake itself which gave a great sense of adventure to the kids (and me!)
Staff and facilities are first class and we shall certainly be returning - no problems with noise apart from cows, sheep, geese and owls ! Smashing.

Finding the campsite is easily enough, once on site the reception is a long way into the site (not the farm at the entrance).
National Trust staff were very friendly and knowledgeable regarding the surroundings and things to do. Booking on times are adhered too, to allow the staff time for their other duties, don’t arrive early, you’ll be waiting. Activities for kids are run directly from the site.
The pitch was a good size but quite stony below a couple of inches and it also had a fair slope on it. Close to the water it was well away from other tents so quiet in that respect but take ear plugs for the honking geese and quacking ducks (they stay up late and get up early), a really lovely idyllic spot with very few midges probably due to the bats.
The shop was stocked with many essentials, seemed good value too and was open at useful times. Maps are available for local walks and biking. The one to the pubs is useful as you can get lost. The Outgate Inn is welcoming with good ales and reasonably priced food. The Drunken Duck Inn is exceptional. Great selection of ales and lovely food, though it’s more of a dinning experience (you need to book a table). Walkers welcome at both. Look out for the Barn Owl on the walk back.
Its also possible to walk to Ambleside, mainly off the road along permitted paths, but it takes about an hour (there is no shortcut).
Showers, toilets and washing up facilities were all really clean, well lit and worked really well. Recycling facilities provided.
The site was quiet at night and all the other campers well behaved, no groups. All in all a very nice campsite and I look forward to going back.
