Visited at the weekend, site full by about 6pm on Friday. There are 2 options, Vic's meadow which is a field and looked pretty bumpy and Ransom's which is the shore side pitch. Vic's meadow is right next to where the cars are parked and therefore do not have to carry bags too far. A lot of the tents looked as though they were pitched on a slope, although there were a few flat areas. The toilet block is situated between Vic's and Ransom's and is pretty basic but generally clean. Ransom's is more scrubby underfoot and is in the trees, running down to the shore. Not all pitches have a view of the lake. There is a limitation on the number of tents allowed in this area at the moment and so it is well spaced out and quiet. This makes it worth the extra cash, rather than the lakeside pitch, unless you can secure a pitch right next to the lake. The 6 metre rule between tents is rigidly enforced! We stayed at Ransom's and it was quiet both nights, apart from wildlife. This is a lovely spot for simple camping but don't expect too many creature comforts! At most expect to have to carry your kit 60-70 metres from car. The Drunken Duck is a 5-10 minute drive and highly recommended for a drink. Ambleside is 10-15 minutes by car. I would stay here again.

Disappointed with this campsite. Paid the extra £5 premium for a "lakeside" pitch, but found nothing but lack of grass or unlevel pitches.
Long walk to the toilets and no natural light, the toilets themselves were very smelly and dark.
Plagued with flies around over pitch and when we found the bins, we found them to be over flowing with bin bags! not really good on a hot June summers day!.
As said previously in other reviews, not allowed to park car next to pitch, this can be a problem in the dark. As you cannot see your car.
After one night, we packed up and left!.

This is a fantastically situated site. The main pitching area is split into two, lakeside and main field (the lake side is £5 per night more). It is not very well sign posted from the main Ambleside road so a map is advisable. The site for the most part is very quiet as really there is nothing roundabout. Childrens facilities are minimal and there are no walks or anythin along the lake side which was a little dissapointing.

As expected this National Trust site has good facilities. The wash facilities are excellent and well lit. There are extensive recycling facilities and the pitches are fair if a little lacking in grass. The location is excellent for setting into the lakes and its nice to be by the edge of the lake.
The wardens are vigilant and perhaps sometimes too vigilant. We were woken by a warden insisting to see our tickets at nine in the morning. He hadn't even checked our guy ropes (of which each tent only has two!) where the tickets were clearly displayed, as per the instructions on the back. All in all a good site for families and newbies but this kind of attitude will keep more traditional campers away.

Vics Meadow area is ok to pitch on if you can find a level spot and not one that is on quite abit of a slope. Car parking nearby is a pain as you have to carry all your equipment and stuff and can be quite a trek. There was a lack of natural lighting in the toilet block and not artificial lighting at night even though there were lights up.

June 2005 Just got back from a few days at low wray. Weather could not have been better. As always its a great base for exploring the lakes, the facilities were excellent, however i was a little annoyed at the £5 premium rate for a lakeside pitch, but can understand the reason for this . Though the site wardens are very helpful they informed us there may be a charge at this site for the use of inflatables.

May 2005 Low Wray is in great setting in the lake district its quite a twisty drive from the main road in ambleside but the signs are clear enough to find it.
We paid for a lake side pitch but there was only a few places right next to the lake so you have to turn up quite early to get a decent pitch.
The toilet block and shower block are right in the middle of the campsite so there is quite good access, but they could do with a good clean.
The only downside to the campsite is the lack of grassy areas near the lake for you to pitch yur tent. When we attempted to pitch we found that we couldnt get all the pegs in due to lots of rocks in the ground, and we were forever moving our tent around to find some grass with no rocks, this was a bit frustrating.
But all in all we had a great weekend in the lake distict and I would recomend coming here for a weekend or short break.

May 2005 Got lucky and pitched right next to the lake. Nice view. Especially in the morning at sunrise. It's an extra £5 so think twice whether it is for you before you rush over there. Why? Well, the lakeside view is the sites chief selling point but staying in the main area is cheaper, easier to unload the gear, the ground quality is way better, less flies - away from the water and it is much closer to the toilets and playground.
Although we didn't stay in the main area, I kinda wished we had because for me, the view from where I pitched our tent wasn't quite enough to make it worth the hassle. Apart from that, the facilities where clean, the staff polite and there was always hot water. One thing, don't be tempted to turn up early to get the best spot. Reception opens at 1.00pm. Not 12.30, or even 12.55... 1.00pm on the dot. You cannot get on the site even to wait until you have the card they issue on payment.

September 2004 I love this site! I've been going to Low Wray campsite for the past ten or more years and have never failed to enjoy it. It's a large site, with great facilities and if you're lucky, you can pitch by the lake (something that is easier to achieve outside of the summer months). One other thing to consider: If you don't mind a 40 minute walk to and from the pub, check out The Drunken Duck. It's a fantastic pub / restaurant / hotel, and on a hot summers night is the perfect setting for a couple of post-walk pints!

June 2004 A NT site, therefore good, clean facilities & free. Also have recycling facilities. A lovely site situated on the western shore of the lake. You can request lakeside pitches (beneath trees) but you have to be early or time it right to get these prized spots. A good location for Windermere/Ambleside with a car. Roads to/from site are narrow so beware of other traffic! Fairly easy to find - don't go too quickly down those narrow roads or you could easily miss the NT signs! On-site shop has essentials and some extras. Access is only granted by way of a barrier and passcard (which is issued on arrival) Therefore making the site quite secure (it's so secluded anyway, I wouldn't expect this to be a problem). Unfortunately the site was rather noisy on the Saturday evening/night as there was a large group of children camping here (They must have been Scouts or a school group as they were playing games and singing camp songs rather noisily). They were in a separate field to the other campers - but not far enough away if you ask me!
