Our first camping adventure. A truly beautiful experience. The extra five pounds a night for a lakeside pitch is well worthwhile.v convenient for swimming in the lake in your best pants. Also the sunrise over the hills is breathtaking.
The Drunken Duck (pub) is about 20 minutes walk. It is really good although a little expensive. An excellent choice of interesting crisps combined with a fabulous view framed by surprisingly fat sheep made this an excellent evening out.
The campsite shop although not extensive opens at 1 o'clock (pm!). Upon our enquiry as to the availability of bread we were enlightened to be given an extensive and detailed explanation of the dynamics of the local economy and its supply chain which rendered the sale of bread as completely out of the question.consequently, I feel my 3 years spent studying Economics at Uni was a complete waste of time!
We must disagree with earlier comments about the friendliness (or lack thereof) of the friendliness of the warden. The yound lady and chap were lovely and the older fella, whilst we suspect a little cantankerous was nonetheless more than accommodating to us.
Whilst we hope this information is of some use, without any doubt the highlight of our trip (aside from the opportunity to get to know each other a little better) was our all too brief excursion into Ambleside. A charming place with a chippy that would provide sustenance to even the weariest of campers. But, if you are to do just one thing in Ambleside, we heartily recommend seeking out the Health Food Shop run by Craig & Pandora, opposite the Post Office.

I love this campsite! We come at least twice a year. The lakeside pitches are well worth the extra money, even if you are not the closest to the lake, you still get a peaceful area to camp in and lovely views of the lake. Due to the trees it is not the easiest soil to pitch in sometimes but no more so than would be expected in an area with so many trees. Site is ideal for those who want no nonsense camping. The toilet block / showers are cleaned every day by NT staff, it is only the users that make them dirty. If everyone has respect for each other and facilities then there is no problem. Car parking is away from tent pitching areas which is great for peace and quiet in evenings and removes the danger of some idiot running over guy ropes or sitting in car pumping fumes over the next door tent as I have seen on other sites when it gets a little cold in evenings. Only downside is that you can be walking your kit to your tent in the rain - easily overcome by packing sensibly. After all, info on parking is given on NT website so should not be a surprise. Walks around the lake are easily accessible, just walk out the campsite to the lane then turn either right for Ambleside (footpath off road) or left to head down lake shore (approx 1-2km walk along road then footpath). We take canoes to the site and love the fact we can launch from the shore outside our tent! All in all, a great campsite with decent facilities. There are no surprises if the National Trust website pages have been read before you go.

In summer this site is full most of the time and is really only suited to passing back-packers, as they are the only ones for whom space is held in reserve. Even then its only two or three pitches. If you are really lucky and just passing through with your vehicle then a pitch may be vacated. You cant make an advanced booking, though. All of this is very poor - we found you may phone in to be told there is space - but when you are on your way the site may have become full before you have arrived. Often if you phone to check, the answer phone will be "on" at busy times or you will get a recorded message that the site is full. I encountered a particularly bizarre warden on the august bank holiday weekend. He didn't seem to like vehicles of any form, nor boats or trailers and was particularly perverse in his logic on admission, changing his mind when I declared the prescence of my Car, boat and trailer. This was doubly frustrating as a minute or so earlier - they had inferred that there may be space. They also asked the size of my tent (2m x 4m khyam freelander) deemed it too big! The wardens also refused my request for me to take my sailing dinghy down to launch it from the lake shore. I asked only if i could leave it there and return the next day for a sail. Answer was a flat NO. The reason stated was "its just another vehicle". The wardens advice was to take the boat and leave it at the public slip. On checking I found this was to be 15 miles away in Bowness, on the other side of the lake and in the worst part of the lake for sailing that was chock full of power boats with little wind and where you could leave a boat for a maximum of 14 hrs. Had I followed the advice my holiday would have been ruined. Its a real pity that the National Trusts policies are so poor - as this site has the only access the western shore of lake Windermere. Its also in a lovely location, and its a great shame that the landowners (national trust) seem to be able to interpret the policy on admission of leisure users. In short - don't consider visiting this site if its a weekend and you are not local to it,. Best advice is to get as close as possible - then check if there is space before you shift pitches. But beware - even then the site may fill up before you can "claim" a pitch - I intend to sort this situation out by querying the admissions policy with the national trust and will report back when I get a result from them. Site in itself was not one of the best, one of the deciding factors to visit it was the lakeside pitches, and when we arrived we weren't even offered one, but saw that there we lots of empty pitches. There were absolutely no lights in the toilet block on the first night, which made it thouroughly unpleasant. Luckily by the second day the lights were on in the toilet block and it had been cleaned. Unfortunatly the number of showers in the ladies (2) meant that we were left waiting for almost half an hour and resorted to washing in the lake. Had a lovely stay eventually but not helped by dirty toilets, matter-of-fact staff and dissappointment of not getting a lakeside pitch. Worth a visit, but not for the site, just it's location.

Stayed at Low Wray as part of a group from work. We travelled there separately as our homes are in different places. Unfortunately this was not appreciated by one of the wardens who insisted that we should have arrived together which would have been a logistical nightmare. I get the impression that the campsite is for backpackers rather than anyone with a car. Cars have to be parked separately from the tents. I learned this the hard way, as the warden was also not too impressed that I had parked my car right next to my tent, not appreciating that when we arrived it was raining hard and I needed to get my bedding etc into the tent dry and blow up my airbed using a compressor powered from the car’s cigarette lighter. Obviously we didn’t feel very welcome As for the site, we stayed in a separate group area, which was nice for privacy, but you had a choice of pitching either on stony soil or tree roots, all above rocky ground. Nice if you want to bend tent pegs. The toilet block had the basics, although one urinal overflowed every time it flushed and the lights inside the block only came on when it got dark, which made it very gloomy inside during daylight hours. If it was up to me to choose Low Wray as a camp site, I would have given it a wide berth. I can forgive the awful weather, but the site could have been more friendly, with better pitches where you could take your car and facilities, even if they have to be basic.

Our first camping experience as a couple! A great time, site was full but we weren't all on top of each other, plenty of space around us! Shame the shop isn't open in the morning! Good facilities for showering, although a tad dirty! All in all a great site, run to a high standard!

OK nice site but not really for me and my partner. We had no car so we had a mile and bit walk to bus stop(good service thou). Or 3 miles to Ambelside or hawk head(good walk). The toilet block are coming to end of there working life I think I need to refitted and better lighting put in. The site was nice a quiet. no elecly hook up . Is more suitable for short stay for family groups who don't mind the more basic toilet.

The campsite was quite pleasant. The views pleasant and fairly quiet. However, it is a fair walking distance (2 mile walk) from the nearest town but there is a bus service - 505, that is around a mile walk to get to. The area around the site lacks any entertainment and we were rather disappointed by the fact that there are no footpaths that take you around the lake nearest to the site.
The toilets lack modernization, went the lights are turned off, they are quite dingy.
It is a basic site, adequate for short stays.

First the positive - the lakeside pitches looked lovely, with tents pitched amongst trees and looking out over Lake Windermere. We saw the lakeside area at night, and with the lights from Ambleside Marina twinkling over the water, it was a lovely site. However, the site itself is disappointing. It works on a first come, first served basis, with arrivals catered for from 13.00 to 20.00hr. We arrived at about 13.45, joined a queue and registered. So far,so good. The lakeside area was full, as was the adjacent sites. We had to go "over the bridge" to three small fields. The ground is very uneven and there are no marked pitches. You do a kind of "free for all", whilst making sure that all the tents are at least 6m apart. Although we arrived early, we still had trouble finding two spots for our (small) tents. The wardens do not ask the size of the tents, and there were some big tents taking up a lot of room. Fortunately I am not bad at maths and managed to locate my tent 6m equidistant from 4 other tents. The wardens enforce the 6m rule reasonably well. The ground is very uneven and fairly rocky, so finding a spot 6m from anyone else on a piece of ground that is not on too great a slope or too rocky is quite tricky. Then comes the fun of trying to hammer in the tent pegs. The soil is about 5cm deep over what appears to be solid rock. In the end we bent the tent pegs into hoops and fastened the loosest ones down with the spare rocks. The site itself is about 3 miles from Ambleside, too far to walk and I would not fancy cycling on the narrow and very busy roads. This means driving into Ambleside, a lovely village, but with quite expensive parking. (It is free after 6pm in the smaller car parks. Beware of the temporary car park as this charges in the evening and closes at 10pm) The toilet blocks and showers were dark during the day, and were not cleaned every day. They quickly became rather smelly and unpleasant. The showers were of the swimming pool variety i.e they turned themselves off after about 1min. There is no separation between the shower and the area for your clothes, which means that your clothes get wet whilst you shower. There is nowhere to put your clothes whilst you shower. The water for washing and washing up was cold. If all you want to do is to stay on the site and spend your time on the lake, and you are not too fussy about the toilets, then this is the site for you. My daughters and I wanted to go fell walking, and to spend the evenings in Ambleside, and this site was inconvenient for both fell walking and for staying out in the evening. In addition, after a day on the fells, we wanted a good shower, which we did not get.

Once we found this site and pitched up on a faily even piece of ground we had a pleasant stay. There isn't much to do near by and the access to the lake is limited. It was very busy during our stay and it was very noisy. I would recommend that you think twice, if you are staying in Vic's meadow, to pitch anywhere near the toilet block as the door to it slams everytime it is opened, not good for a restful sleep! The site is well maintained but there is a lack of natural light in the toilet block by day and they could be cleaned more than once a day when the site is full.
