I visited this site as 1 of a group of 7 ladies away to celebrate a friends 30th birthday. We had struggled to find a site that would accept us being a same sex group, but this site said they were happy to take us as long as we stuck to the rules. We booked 2 pitches, one medium and one small, and requested for them to be together, which was granted in the booking confirmation.

On arrival, the site is very easy to find, and only 10-15 mins drive from Ambleside, surrounded by beautiful countryside views. It is quite a drive from the site entrance to reception, but it is signposted all the way! You have to park in the 'parking for new arrivals area' and then walk through the trees to reception (we missed the sign for this and took the long route!) Check in was easy and we noted there was a shop area there selling essentials. The guy was very friendly and helpful, gave us a site map, a map of our pitch area and explained how to get to it. He told us we had pitch number 117 and 118. We had to go back on ourselves to get to it as it was on the lower fields of the site, but we found it easily.

We knew from the website that you can't park next to your tent, which I was dreading a bit having so much stuff, but our pitches had a parking area just next to them and the toilet block was also right by us so we were really pleased. Our pitches were very generous! The ground was a bit slopey, and there were some small boulders in bits of it, but we managed to avoid them, the earth is also VERY VERY stoney, and it was really hard work trying to get the pegs into the ground.

We pitched the tents, got sorted and then walked to the local pub, the drunken duck. It's about 2 miles away, but the last 1/2 mile is up a hill, so we were ready for a drink when we got there! The views were lovely and the pub was very smart!

On arrival back at our tent, we found a group with a massive tent and several small tents had pitched right on our doorstep, literally 1 meter from the back of our small tent, on an area which we had been told was part of our pitch! We weren't very happy, but having chatted it out with them, they had been told that pitch 117 was their pitch as well, so I ended up going to reception to get things sorted. The guys were really good about it, and even came down to have a look at the situation. Effectively, the guy who booked us in had given us the wrong pitch, but he had done it to prevent us being surrounded by a big group, unfortunately, he hadn't told anyone, and so when the big group checked in, they were given the same pitch, but we were already on it! So instead of going back to reception and asking, they just pitched right by us, which seems a bit stupid to me, but hey! Anyway, the NT guy told us if we were all happy then we could all stay put, and as we were all already pitched, that is what we did. We weren't particularly pleased to have such close neighbours though, but no way was I re-pitching our tents at 9pm!

Anyway.

The site itself is really big, and the walk around it is actually quite nice. I did feel that the website is a tad misleading though. I understand having to pay extra for the lakeside pitches, but I was kind of expecting to at least be able to see it from our pitch. But no! In fact unless you pay for a lakeside pitch, I doubt you will see it from your pitch!

The facilities were really good, modern and clean, hot water, lots of toilets but in the block by us only 4 showers for a lot of tents! Also, they have Dyson hand dryers in the toilets, which at first I thought was a great idea, until they woke me up several times in the night because our tent was so close to the loo and they are so damn noisy! After one night of disturbed sleep we had had enough of them and actually turned them off at the wall the second night! I slept like a baby until someone found the on switch at 7am!

The other moan I have about this site is that it was really over crowded. A lot of the tents were closer together than fire regs state they should be, and it made for a really noisy stay for us, not only because of our close neighbours, but also because people were constantly walking past our tent to get to the loo and pot wash, and people seem to forget how loud they are being and that tents aren't sound proof!

I also feel the site is really over priced! I expected to pay a bit more with it being NT, but we paid nearly £140 for 2 nights! I have stayed at a lot of campsites over the years, and this was honestly one of the worst, especially when you consider the price!

Unfortunately I wont be returning or recommending this place.

Spent a night here by chance while walking the Wainwrights.

It is about 4 miles from Ambleside, a great town with all you need as a base for a holiday in the lakes.

The site is on the shores if lake Windermere and run by the National Trust. An excellent bast for canoeing in the lake.

Facilities on site are very good, with plenty of hot, clean showers.

Friendly staff on site who are happy to help.

We had a wonderful stay on this site. The staff were very helpful and suggested a pitch for us which was their favourite. We could see why - parked up beside a stream in a peaceful spot with a friendly swan visiting us now and again!

We went on several bike rides from the site, including one along lake windermere. It involved a short ride along a quiet road and then it was along paths. A new path is currently being built from the site. You can hire bikes and canoes from the shop on site.

All facilities clean. Shop with food and information etc.

We didn't book ahead but there are only a limited number of pitches for motorhomes.

 This is a great site!

It is expensive, but it's a really spacious, attractive site, set in woods and beside Windermere lake.

Children's facilities are good, with a couple of play areas, and although our children are young (4 and 6) we were happy to give them a little bit of freedom. They can also play at the lake-shore, with supervision!

Washing facilities are also good and clean.

Within walking distance is Low Wray castle, which is also a lot of fun for children, as well as interesting for the adults.

Staff could have been a little brighter. They initially gave us the wrong pitch, and they weren't always at the shop when it should have been open; but they were generally friendly.

We probably will return.

Just back from a stay at Low Wray for the May Day Bank Holiday. Being National Trust, it is relatively expensive, but don't let that put you off paying extra for the 'Lakeside Pitch', literally on the shores of Lake Windermere. The views were stunning - although the Geese were a little noisy.

The shower block is clean - even when the site was full like it was this weekend - and we didn't have to wait once. The washing up areas could do with a light though. Other than that, we were really happy.

A few things to note however, some of the pitches in other parts of the campsite looked to be on a steep slope, if that was mine I would have been very disappointed. Also, you can't drive down to your pitch and have to carry it to the car park. This wasn't an issue for us, but I know it could be for some others it could be a real issue.

Overall, I really recommend this site and wouldn't hesitate in going back.

I used this site as the venue for my first solo camp in my new vango blade. I didn't arrive at the site until just after 7pm on a Saturday and was worried that I wouldn't make it in time but was glad to find the reception still open with a friendly and helpful lady behind the desk. The toilets and showers seemed very clean and nice to be in with a sink at the back of the block to do washing up in.

I pitched my tent facing the lake on pitch 5 which I had to pay extra for but I'm glad that I did. Not that the other pitches had anything wrong with them but the view I had from my tent across the lake whilst eating my meal was very peaceful. I was one of only 3 tents on the site due to it being a somewhat wet and wild weekend. It wasn't quiet however due to the ducks and swans going about their business. I thought this added to the feeling of being somewhere wild but was surprised at the volume.

All in all a great site to get away from it all which was just what I was looking for!

We stayed for 7 nights in August on a 'Large Lakeview' pitch in a newly opened field which was the best on the site with a view straight across the lake! The tents were very well spaced making for a peaceful camp.

It's worth noting that you can't drive to your pitch, so we had quite a long distance to drag a very full trailer, but worth it to have the cars out of the way for the rest of our stay. Anyone who would have difficulty moving their kit should probably ask for a pitch in 'Vick's Meadow' as that is near the parking. The site got very full over the weekend and the 'Vick's meadow' area was engulfed in a smog of BBQ smoke, so we were pleased to be pitched a bit higher up.

The showers/toilets were clean and even during this busy time I only had to queue for a shower once. I do think that opening the new field has put additional strain on the nearest block though, and 4 sinks is not enough at busy teeth cleaning times! It was helpful to see from the other review that there are a couple of sockets so bring your own hairdryer and you can charge your phone.

The shop was good for camping supplies, but no help for food as it carried very low stock. Nothing you could make a meal from except the excellent local burgers, bread, eggs and milk all out of stock and onions the only fruit / veg! You can get an ice cream though, and your ice packs re-frozen for 20p each. There is a Tesco express in nearby Ambleside, and we had a great Chinese takeaway from the Lucky Dragon.

Don't go to this site without some kind of boat! The weather was hot so swimming and rowing were the main occupations.

Overall an excellent week on a fantastic site 'proper camping' with no bars and discos. Great kids play area.

Would definitely return and I hope they don't spoil it by expanding any more, as I think the weekend we were there was capacity.

This is a great site in a beautiful location. The staff were friendly and helpful. The shop is adequate but pricey. Our pitch (on the main field nearest the reception) was fine, but a lot of the other pitches were seriously sloping. This would be my only criticism of the whole place.

I always rate campsites by the state of the shower block, and this was excellent. It was always clean, the showers were hot, and I never had to queue.

Two things I particularly appreciated were plugs for hair driers or straighteners, and plenty of hooks & a bench to put all your stuff on when you were in the shower.

One of the highlights for us was the twice daily visit of the Yew Tree Farm van serving fantastic burgers (lamb or beef), sausage and bacon rolls with chips. It would be quite expensive if you were feeding a family of four, but the quality was exceptional.

This is a beautiful campsite and well worth a visit. Lots of camping areas with many of them secluded and some in a large field.

We arrived late in the day and were offered one of the two remaining campervan spots. Unfortunately because of the extreme rain the week before it was very boggy.

We parked the van and promptly got stuck in the mud! MrH managed to get us out but we were concerned about staying there overnight in the chucking rain.

The warden was helpful and said we could be towed out in the morning if need be. Because the van was elderly we opted to stay in one of the car parks in the trees instead which was fine. Not the campsites fault but disappointing because I would have to say that our allocated spot was one of the best ever.

If you ever get a chance and you have a van. Go in the dry weather for an amazing stay!

Facilities were good and setting perfect. Great kids playpark.

Lovely site, large site however lots of privacy especially in the woodland area.

Facilities good, only 2 showers in the block nearest to us (1 of 3 blocks), and often a queue. Busy bank holiday weekend, and the cleanliness of the toilets and showers varied, sometimes clean and tidy other times later in the day heavy mud in the showers and very dirty, with no way of cleaning up for ourself.

However, lovely friendly site, great little shop, great park and great location. Will return!
