We were rather disappointed with this site. We had tried to camp here in August but upon arrival were told they were full, so we stayed at the Croft in Hawkshead. We took this to be a good sign and so booked to stay in September.

Upon arrival at 2.45pm we found the office was closed, with a sign saying they were open at 3pm. We waited in the car and 4 staff arrived a few minutes later, although they stood about until 3pm exactly before unlocking the doors to let us in. We checked in quickly and were told we could pitch anywhere within a designated field, but not by the Lake as our tent was too big.

Upon finding our field, we found it was very uneven, with a large hill in the middle and many potholes and stones. The grass was also rather long, certainly it had not been cut in a long while. After pitching our tent we decided to wander down to the Lake where we found that there were people camped with tents far larger than ours, so we don't know why we were told we had to camp in the field.

The toilet block was rather tired, not very clean and the showers were not very warm. They were adequate for our weekend stay but we would not have been happy to use them for a week long trip.

Overall, we felt that the site was a disappointment, especially as it is run by the National Trust. It was very overpriced, and the pitches were uneven and not as described. The facilities were also not up to standard.

I would definitely NOT be returning to this site. There was no hot water (I would have thought if you advertised hot water, this should be the case and I see this is common practise.

We did complain but the staff were most unhelpful. Also even though no noise after 11pm, there were some young french students who partied until 3.00am!

We did phone the numbers given, even the emergency one and not available! this was unbelievable. And yes the Lake view was not! and we paid extra for this. Yes and showers were dirty

The campsite is rather expensive and throughout the time we were there (2 nights) we had no hot water and washrooms in the ladies were filthy. Otherwise it was fine, although categorising tents as 'lake view' and other view is a bit pretentious and a real lake view only had those at the very edge of the campsite.

My main complaint is less related to the campsite itself, but you might want to be careful with swimming in the windermere, I got a nasty stomach bug from it.

Previous reviews cast doubt about our choice of site but upon arrival all our fears were dispelled. A great location with super friendly staff and slick check in. Facilities are basic but the site is designed to blend in with the nature not wipe it out.

Kids loved the location and the friends they made. Weather could have been better but that's the chance you take in the Uk, we will be visiting again and hope to try the other NT sites in the region. Building works are apparently ongoing to create a new shop and reception area

We stayed at Low Wray in August with our 15 yr old boys and their 13 yr old friend and on the whole we were all disappointed with the site considering that we paid over £100 for three nights.

The NT website says 'watch the sun rise over Windermere and admire the magnificant fell views.' From Woodhouse Meadow, where we were pitched, you could not see the lake at all and the views were far from 'magnificent' for the Lake District. In fact, our pitch was facing the toilet block!

It appears from previous reviews that you can pay extra to pitch by the lake, but we were not aware of this and were not given an option when we booked.

The site is only 10 minutes drive from Ambleside but is quite secluded and peaceful. On checking in, we were told the number of our pitch and shown a map of its location. The pitch was marked with a metal, numbered plate.

The ground is gently sloping and quite rocky and our tent pegs would not go into the ground more than a few inches so we were grateful a friend had lent us his rock pegs.

The shop sells a small range of basic food and camping items. The staff are very helpful and will even charge your phone for you.

The toilet block is very basic with four sinks, four loos and two showers in the ladies and the same in the gents. There were three other cubicles which remained locked during our stay but despite this and the site being almost full we never had to queue to use the facilities. The sinks, loos and showers themselves were very clean but other parts like windows, light fittings (full of dead flies and cobwebs) etc obviously had not been cleaned for some time.

Our kids were too old for the playground and preferred to start a game of football, for which there wasn't really enough room.

If you get fed up with cooking on the camp fire head to 'Lucy's on a plate' in Ambleside. The breakfasts are excellent!

We've just returned from a 12 night stay at Low Wray. The location is absolutely superb with access straight onto the lake. We took our Kayak and spent many hours paddling! The site is very clean and the staff very friendly.

We camped on Vics Meadow and were glad to be at the top of the hill as those at the bottom were a bit soggy! The pitches are sloping in Vics Meadow but this didn't bother us too much.

The only thing letting this site down are the toilet blocks. They need a bit (lot) of a re-vamp, they're not disgusting but need either a very deep cleanse and paint or refitting completely.

The playground at the moment is very basic but an adventure playground looks as though it is under construction.

Camping away from the cars didn't pose a problem and it was nice to let the children play without worrying about cars coming past all the time. Overall we had a very pleasant stay and would go again.

The location of this site is fantastic; right next to Lake Windermere, with lots of good walks from the site (maps available at reception). Ambleside and Hawkshead are just a short drive away. The kids and I loved pottering about at the edge of the lake and even ventured in for a swim (brrrr!) We had no problems with ducks, in fact my 2 year old was delighted by them.

Site staff were friendly and very helpful, one young man even helped us unload our car.

The wash block was well maintained and clean, with plentiful hot water and a useful disabled/family wash room round the back.

It's a bit of a pain not being able to park near the tent and it would be helpful if the site could provide wheelbarrows to help transport stuff from car to pitch (I know I'm camping, but hey, I've got 3 kids!)

Even though this is a really expensive site, I would definitely go again and pay the extra for a lakeside pitch.

I love this campsite for it's location. It is so beautiful with views across the Windermere that are worth every penny.

There are aspects of the booking procedure that need sorting. They bought in booking on-line system which is great as before you just had to hope they had enough space. How ever having phoned to request a specific area near the children's playground on arrival we discovered that we had been moved to the other side of the field, out of sight of the playground. With 3 and 6 year old children this was not good.

With the co-operation of some very nice campers around us they squeeze us in so we were able to camp where we wanted to but it was not made any easier by their 6m between ten rule.

This rule was there for fire safety reasons but obviously did not apply to the gazebos that were being put up between tents with BBQs in. I am happy to abide by campsite rules but as long as they are consistent.

The reception opening hours of 8-11am and 3-7pm are just silly. It means that there are long queues of arrivals at 3pm rather than staggering arrivals as happens at most other campsites.

Another little niggle is the lack of hand dryers in the shower blocks.

I have now been twice and will go again but will be phoning to check my booking for a week before.

Lovely sight beside Lake Windemere just past Ambleside. Ideal for canoeing. Pitches varied in angle, kids adventure playground not yet completed, but new wooden bridge links the two halves of the site. Noisy until 11pm and quite a few inconsiderate people around.

Weather when we stayed was variable - the tent is currently airing in the garage! Ducks and swans on the lake very beautiful.

Cost slightly more than average (£49 for 2 nights) and shower block basic - only 2 showers and 5 loos. Hot water free but varied in temperature and pressure. Small shop on site is well stocked but pricey.

All in all, probably worth it - would go back there again, but when the weather forecast improves!

Lovely pub in Bowness - The Old John Peel did brilliant meals (with kiddie options) - child and dog friendly.

Pootled on the boat from Bowness to Lakeside and on the steam railway and back (£14 per adult return, under 5's free) - takes about 3 hours round trip.

Booked Friday - Sunday in July. Weather was absolutely terrible but managed to pitch the tent without getting too wet.

Booking in good, got a map of the site and directions to our area. Check in up til 9pm which was appealing seeing as we were coming up after work. We were in the woodland part near the tipis. Nice quiet location. Shower block close and not busy. (3 separate blocks for the sites different areas.) Plug for hairdryers located in the shower block. Water tap available and bins for general waste and recycling. No separate washing up facility though.

Didn’t use the site shop although looked quite well stocked. Play area for kids but as we did not take them this time we did not visit.

Good base location.

Want to try different sites and locations but would come back again if staying in the area.
