Our best holiday ever. The cost was double what we have paid at other sites, but everyone seemed to have their own space, it would never be crowded.
We had read previous reviewers' criticisms concerning arrival time of 15.00, and leaving at 11.00 but the staff were very busy during, and outside these hours having a good tidy up. Some inconsiderate campers left litter which was promptly shifted.
Some, including ourselves, were complaining about having to carry gear from car park but the pay-off, in terms of peace and quiet later, no headlights coming and going at night, walking in safety, knowing where there would be no vehicles, a great, big, plus.
Staff were genuinely friendly and helpful. They are a credit to the National Trust.
Toilets and showers were old but very clean.
Everything you could say about ducks has been covered elsewhere, but if you want have a lake then you can expect to be entertained by water-fowl, they just work nights.

I have just got back from a week long stay at Low Wray campsite. We stayed in Vics meadow which is not on the lake front but is only a two minute walk away. The pitches are numbered, which is a shame as the field was mostly empty and they gave us a pitch for a week on a sloping hill!
We did enjoy the visits from the ducks every day though! The premium pitches on the lake front are lovely and the view is amazing but we were glad not to be there as the wind on the lake front was very strong, and to be honest it was cold enough where we were!
The site wasn't busy while we were there so I didn't ever have to wait for the toilets or shower and they were cleaned daily. The shop has a few basics but they are overpriced as you would expect (a pound for a tin of beans) so pack your food or a short drive away in ambleside there is a very well stocked spar and also a co-op.
The check in times of 3.00pm and the fact you have to be packed up and off site by 11.00am do shorten a weekend stay considerably.
There are some lovely walks from Low Wray and the surrounding countryside is beautiful, all in all we had a lovely week there. It is a little on the expensive side but the location is worth every penny.

I have just returned from a 4 day visit at Low Wray.
Arrived on the Sunday and Camped at the edge of the lake. The chap in Reception was very pleasant and explain the hot water in the shower block was not working but would be fixed in 24 hours. Which it was.
Although it was a little hard to find a flat piece of land to pitch the tent, the wildness of the camp site was very appealing.
The toilets and shower were very clean. I did not use the shop.
I had a lovely stay here with an early morning call everyday from the local ducks. But would recommend a stay at this site.
I did feel that better sign age may have help me find my pitch quicker

What a lovely site! We paid extra to stay next to the lake in a field with lots of trees and it was worth every penny. We opened the tent in the morning to beautiful views accross the lake and it was incredibly relaxing. The field was full but had a nice friendly respectful feel to it (was really quiet)and really liked that all the pitches were nicely spaced out. To the pitches there is a walk over an uneven field but there are warnings about this everywhere and as long as you take a torch you will be fine. For me it added to the remoteness of it and was much more fun than your average camping field. Pack well as your car is in the car park and you have to walk over the field with your stuff but well worth it much nicer without loads of cars in the field.
The toilet blocks were very clean and despite the campsie being full I did not have to wait once for one of the two showers in the ladies. There are a number of sinks and a plug for your hairdryer which was great because it was a little chilly at night and would have been cold with wet hair. Also free showers with plenty of hot water.
We did pay slightly more to stay on this campsite compared to others we have stayed at recently but have to say it was worth every penny. The surrounding area is beautiful with some lovely walks taking in the lake and boat trips. Staff were also very friedly and helpful with info on the area. We shall certainly be back.

It was my second time camping, my husband and I stayed for 3 nights at the end of August, although it was 5, bad weather made us leave early!
Had a nice pitch with lovely views (we were in vic's meadow) and it didn't feel like there was too many other people although I think it was almost full. There are only 4 toilets/2 showers in a block and although they were ok and clean enough they could have been a lot betetr. It would have only taken half hour to clean the whole place up a little. There was however 1 plug for a hairdryer ladies! Washing-up area was always clean and there were plenty of rubbish bins.Although there was a site shop it really doesn't have much in it so best to get your things from somewhere else, hawkshead was only a 10min drive with a co-op.
Over-all it was a good site lovely views but I think I'd probably try somewhere else next time. Not the most expensive site but also not the cheapest for the facilities you got.

We have just come back from 5 day trip to the lake district. The site it self was in a good location even though it was a bit of the beaten track but only a short drive to ambleside which has everything that you need. The best pitches are 70 and 32, we where on 70 which fits a medium tent and 32 which is for a small tent, but you are right on the shore of Windemere and the viewings are amazing matter what the weather!
The toilets where okay but could have done with a bit of updating and a new lock on one of the showers meaning that there was only one but the views where well worth it.
All in all I would go back just for the location!

Lovely site, great location, very quiet at night.
We paid the £7.50 premium to stay right next to Windermere which was ideal for launching the kayak and fishing. Gorgeous sunset views.
Only two showers in the shower block and one hairdryer so there was a queue in the mornings, much quieter in the evenings. 3 sinks to wash the pots and that was always free. There is a washing machine and dryer which both worked well.Reception sells a few essentials, nearest shops in ambleside.
There is a small park for younger children, but mine who are older made their own tennis net and entertained themselves in the kayak and swimming in the lake.
Only problem we encountered was we pitched the tent on slight dip on one side so when we awoke after 12 hours of heavy rain, we were waterlogged. The campsite staff were very helpful and let us borrow a brush to sweep the water. However, it didn't dampen our spirits, we booked an extra night and went out walking for the day and when we arrived back it had dried out.
We are definitely going back in a few weeks time

Stayed for a quick overnight stay during week.
Stunning location, paid extra to camp next to lake. And right next to lake we were!
Toilets/showers weren't the best, but were sufficient for the amount of tents on site, wouldn't like to go when it was full as I think they'd struggle.
Helpful staff on Reception and good base for walking around south lakes area.
Would go back but not during very busy periods.

We spent 4 days here just after Easter, and had a great time. We managed to pitch on the field by the children's play area, so our 5 year old spent most of the time on there playing happily with various other children she met whilst there.
The toilet/shower block was very basic. 2 showers and 2 toilets for women and same for men - they only appeared to be cleaned once a day, so did get a bit mucky, but bearable! The water in the showers was almost always hot though, so not too bad.
The small reception/shop stocked the basics, and the staff were extremely helpful. You could also use the freezer for your own ice-packs which came in very useful.
The nearest pub is about a 2 mile walk on a bridle path, which was very nice and quite manageable for our 5 year old!
The site is only 5 mins or so drive to Hawkeshead, 10 mins to Ambleside so is actually very well placed.
All in all we had a great time and met some lovely people at Low Wray.

My wife and I stayed here for four days during August 2008, probably the wettest camping trip that we have ever had.
We hadn't pre booked our site and most of the sites in the srea were either fully booked or water logged. When we arrived at Low Wray they slotted us in straight away onto the small tent field, under normal conditions there was plenty of room but with so much surface water and mud about the field looked very crowded. Not happy with this we requested pitch on another field, the attendant was really helpful and explained that the large tent field was full but we could stay in the group area for four nights only.
The group area was actually in the woods, all of the pitches were secluded and looking out across the lakes. Our pitch was fantastic, about twenty foot from the bank of the lake, excellent view, and no one else in site. The toilet block was quite a walk away, specially at night when it was really dark, no site lights except for around the toilet block. Considering the extremely bad weather and the amount of people staying on the site the toilets and showers were in a good state of cleanliness.
The reception building sold bare essentials but for any real shopping you needed to drive into one of the surrounding towns, about a 10 minute drive. There were two pubs within walking distance but we didn't attempt that due to the extremely wet weather.
In conclusion despite the horrendous wet weather we both thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Low Wray, the staff were always helpful and the location was ideal for a visit to the lakes. We would definitely recommend this site, if you can get a pitch in the group area.
