Just returned from a great 3 night stay at Loch Ken.
Upon arrival, we reported to reception and we were shown to our pitch in the camping field. As this was with EHU, it was located near the back of the field near the portable toilet block.
The EHU pitches are on a slight slope, but we were lucky to have a more a less flat one available to us.
The camping field is large and stretches right to the waters edge.
The site has a small well stocked shop selling food, drinks, sweets etc. Also avilable from the shop are boats and canoe hire.
There are no shops within walking distance, so this is OK for essentials.
In the caravan section of the site is the main toilet and shower block. I actually felt the portable toilets and showers in the camp field were better maintained. The dishwasher facilities are with the main toilet block, but there are plans to provide additional dish wash facilities by end of June in the camping field. I also felt that the caravan section was quite cramped and glad were we staying under canvas!
Great views from the site overlooking the loch. There is a football pitch and a good park to keep the children amused.
We visited Cream O'galloway which is a great day out for older children with everything from go karts to zip wires to ice cream tasting. This is approx 25 mins from the site. Threave Estate is also very good, around 6 miles away.
There is a fantastic chip shop right next to the harbour in Kirkubright, which is around 20 mins from the site. A good co-op also. The nearest shop to the site is a Spar in Castle Douglas which is 5 miles away.

Just returned from a three night trip to Loch Ken, camped with a large group including lots of children. The park is very well run, well maintained and the staff friendly and helpful.
It's situated in a picturesque location on the shore of Loch Ken, perfect for bird watching and fishing. There were magnificent Red Kites flying around the park, which flew very close to the ground at times.
The park is quite large and sub-divided into two parts. An older caravan park (with statics)set amidst a wooded area and a large camping field.
There was permanent building housing bathroom/toilets and dishwash area within the caravan park and a portable cabin with showers and toilets in the camping field, all of which were maintained to high standard of cleanliness.
There is also a shop a reasonably well stocked shop on site were you can rent boats from and buy fishing permits. There is also bottled gas available. The children in the group were well catered for with good play parks and plenty of space to run wild.
I felt that the toilet / shower / diswashing facilities were stretched at times and if you were at the bottom or back of the camp field were also a fair jaunt to get to.
I also felt that there was inadequate placement of rubbish bins, especially in the camping field. If you are at the back of the field you are only a few feet away from what can be a busy road. However, I also realise that the camp field is relatively new and under development. It would also been good if there was more tree cover in the camp field as it was fairly exposed.
Overall I would say that the positive aspects of this park far out do the negatives. We had a very relaxed and enjoyable time, it was good value, in a nice part of Scotland with helpful friendly staff. I would not hesitate to return or recommend it to friends.

Wow what a great site, very chilled and relaxed- just like campsites should be. I was made very welcome and given the choice of many pitches and made to feel very at home.
The site is on the edge of Loch Ken giving it a very peaceful and relaxed vibe- yet only a few miles from the busy Castle Douglas The showers are the best- private bathrooms with plenty of hot water.
I would suggest going without EHU as the pitched with EHU could be cramped when busy.
We hired bikes from the nearby loch ken activity centre and explored the forests and nature reserves on the other side of the Loch.

This is simply a superb site. Spectacular scenery and a great vibe. The Red Kites and night star scape are amongst our particular favourite memories.
The surrounding area is filled with places to go and visit with Kipford being worth a visit.
Not even a 50/60 plus dads and lads rugby tour could spoil our stay. In answer to earlier comments no one stepped in to quieten them down.
We will be back again and again. Kids facilities are the best we have encountered.

Just back from 2 nights at Loch Ken, site fantastically located, staff very helpful,
Shame the bridge over the Loch was locked because of H&S, not sites fault though, so it was a drive round to the other side where great RSPB site and Red Kite feeding station (well worth a a visit)
Good facilities but pitches too close together and not very level for my liking.

First time caravanners for us and decided to pick this site after a few friends had recommended it. Not disappointed at all, it has been a pleasure to visit. The staff are great, the place is great, the facilities are great, I suppose overall it has just been a spot on place to visit.
It was nice to have someone on hand to assist if you required any help and as said the staff where very helpful in giving advice and pointing you in the right direction. I suppose if I have any thing to moan about it was just that it was a little too tightly packed in for me but then again it was Easter week so it was sort off expected
The shower facilities where always clean and hot water was always available
Will happily be going back very soon

We have just returned from spending three nights at Loch Ken.
We arrived with a five-man tent, a pup tent, two adults, two teenage girls and a ten-year-old boy - and not one of them wanted to leave!
Staff were very friendly on arrival, and the emptiness of the site allowed us to pitch wherever. We chose a prime site right beside the loch.
When I discussed pricing over the phone I feared it could have been expensive, as I paid a deposit for two full-size tents, but on arrival they were happy to let us pay for an 'awning' for the pup tent, which was just for the girls to sleep in.
The shop on site is ok; it certainly has all the basics. I imagine it would be better stocked in high season - food would probably have gone off before being bought when we were there. However, next door is a 24 hour information room. This is fantastic, with everything from leaflets for days out, information on local activities, contact details for places to eat and even a selection of maps for well-known local mountain biking routes.
The site is advertising free wifi for the entire site for 2011. This was working, but was slightly temperamental, dropping in and out occasionally. However, we were there to camp not sit on electronics, so it didn’t bother us!
Previous campers have set up rope swings over the loch - although be careful in case it breaks - and canoes are available for hire on site priced at £5 per hour for a single, £7.50 for a double. There are also row boats available, a ping pong table for hire, plus free kids play areas, football goals and a large chess set.
We were allowed a camp fire, as long as it was in a container and off the ground, and the kids loved toasting marshmallows.
There is a 10pm noise curfew. We stayed up later talking quietly, but as the site was empty we had no one nearby. The owner is frequently still on site at that time, so I'm sure would be on hand to quiet rowdy visitors.
One of the best sights was seeing the red kites hover overhead, spiraling down to the water's edge to feed. They were close enough to see every detail without binoculars. Other tranquil sights included the herons wandering past, seagulls swooping, ducks quacking and swans slowly swimming by - the birds did seem to get noisy at about midnight, but it's part of the camping experience!
There are two toilet blocks, one at the top of the camping field by the electric hook-ups, and one on the main static caravan site. Both are cleaned at least once, sometimes twice, a day. Unusually hot water is free on site – so no scrabbling for 20pence pieces! As an environmentally friendly site the water in the showers is set up like taps in public toilets; you push a button and the shower turns on for about 30seconds to a minute. At first this may seem irritating, but it is simple enough to lean on the button or keep pressing it, and the bliss at having a hot shower outweighs anything else!
There are also three large washing up areas by the main block, including a little roof for the occasional (!) bad Scottish weather, and a laundry room with washing machines and tumble dryers. These accept tokens, bought from the shop.
If you can drag yourself away from the site, there is plenty to explore – Cream O Galloway is a fantastic family day out – and staff on site are happy to suggest places/events/locations/walks to suit.
All in all, we were delighted with the site – and even the teenagers rediscovered their childish enthusiasm for life!

We decided to fish in relative comfort for our first time fishing Loch Ken and choose the Holiday Park.
Friendly staff on arrival and with it being fairly out of season got our choice of where to pitch our bivvy and got prime position right beside the Loch.
Site Toilets/Showers were kept nice and clean and very warm!
3 good size dish washing areas just outside the toilet block with a roof for the times the Scottish weather isn't at its best.
A large shop/reception area and although not a lot of stock when we visited I presumed this was only due to the time of year we were there.
2 large play areas for the kids with swings etc in one and football nets at the other. You are right beside the Loch though so would need to keep an eye on younger children!
I will probably return with my kids for another fishing trip although not many spots to fish from the bank if the site was busy, would be best hiring a boat to get a good spot.

I think enough has been said about this site, Wife and I have been coming up here on and off for about 20 years, so instead I take you on one of my favourite drives, But be prepared to stop often to admire the scenery,
Turn left out of the gate onto the A713 and head for the top of the Loch, at the top by the pub hang a left over the bridge towards New Gallow. Take the A762 down the opposite side of Loch Ken until you see a sign for The Raiders Road on the right (This is a forest road with all that entails (it's not too bad but it is a forest road )) ( there is a nice hidden loch near the start of the road with an old viaduct that was also part of the railway line that the bridge at the holiday park was )Follow this road from memory about 15 miles until you exit onto the A712 turn left and head for Newton Stewart ( there are several veiw points along this road.
Arrive at Newton Stewart and it's time for Lunch. After lunch head through town to the A75 turn left and head for Dunfries/Castle Douglas ( watch your speed as pc plod does tend to be out with his gun )(and again be prepared to stop at the 'Smokery' and various Castles etc on your way back) either follow the A75 back to Castle Douglas or if you want a more scenic route follow the A75 till you see a sign on the left for the A762 follow that with Loch Ken on your right till you get to New Galloway over the bridge, right at the Pub and down A713 to Loch Ken Holiday Park and a well earned Dram
