My Husband and I returned from this site today after staying for 2 nights. We were lucky to be offered a pitch that had been recently cancelled as they were fully booked.
This site is in a glorious area with beautiful views and nestled on the shore of Loch Ken, it is ideal for families, having lots of space for children to play. We noted that this site is also popular with fishermen and visitors bringing their own boats.
There is a couple of children's playgrounds, a variety of different boating craft to hire, outdoor chess and table tennis available.
The shop is open all day, and a 24hr indoor information room available.
Wardens are very helpful, polite and friendly.
The toilets and showers are spotless, three toilets and three cubicles with shower, toilet and wash basin in the ladies, can't comment on the gents as my Husband didn't use them.
Our pitch was on a spacious hardstanding, we struggled to get the awning pegs into it, (these pegs were for hardstanding ground), and had to borrow a heavier hammer.
This is a well kept, organised site.

We stayed for 5 nights during the Easter Holidays, although busy it didn't feel packed. Our pitch was very spacious with room for the van, awning & car side by side. Our son enjoyed the play park and the freedom he had to play in a safe environment. He also enjoyed the rope swing and hiring a rowing boat with his dad.
Toilets & Showers were spotlessly clean and warm, plenty of hot water, the only criticism if I had to have one is there could be more showers/toilets although it wasn't an issue for us, I could imagine there being a queue in the summer hols.
All the staff were very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed visiting the beaches in the area and also the local National Trust property.
We will definitely be back, my sons favourite campsite so far.

Returned yesterday from a great 3 night stay at Loch Ken. Only rang day before we wanted to go, no problem. Warm welcome in reception & shown location of pitch. Not from from Loch side. Very tidy & welcoming site, friendly staff. Had a great chat with Mungo, he really needs to complete a family/area history. Sadly my wife had flu during the stay so spent most of it in bed! Will we return? Too right we will.
We do most of our trips midweek, when it tends to be quieter, so this trip was ideal.

We stayed here for two nights in July. the site itself is well maintained clean and tidy. although we enjoyed our stay Pitch No5 should only be used as a last resort. we were given this pitch and all through the day campers coming in were parking on the pitch adjacent to our motorhome some leaving engines running when they booked in, when we complained that there was no parking area for check in we were just told ' It doesn't matter they are only stopping for a couple of minutes'. When we have paid for a pitch we expect it to be our pitch and not a car parking space for all who use reception and the shop. Would stay again if in the area but NOT on Pitch 5.

Unfortunately we arrived a little late at this site – just after 5pm. We telephoned ahead and the owner had very kindly stayed behind to check us in. When we booked we were told that we would have a loch side pitch and I was a little disappointed when this was not the case. However, we had a pitch by the reception building which seemed to have more space around it so it was not a problem in the end.
The toilets are kept very clean with the gents having three individually complete bathrooms (sink, toilet and shower) as well as having separate facilities too. The shower block seems quite new – my only criticism here is push button showers and taps with some of the taps being a little too high pressure.
The site is kept to a very high standard with the grass kept to a good length and everywhere being very clean. We had a walk into the tent field one night and glad we did not have a pitch here as it is not very level.
I think my only criticism would be some of the other guests seem to drive to the shower block or the washing up. Not a massive problem normally but when people are trying to get a caravan or motorhome out of the site it can cause a roadblock.
The site is about 8 miles away from Castle Douglas where there is supermarkets, fuel etc. Closer to the site there are a couple of villages which have local services and the occasional pub. The site is an excellent base for exploring the Galloway Forrest which has lots of walks and cycle trails. There is also the Loch itself at the campsite which has fishing or you can hire canoe’s, pedallo’s etc. I would return to this site but maybe Mid-week next time rather than over the weekend as it does get busy.

Just returned from a week here. Tent with hook up, two adults and a dog.
It's a truly beautiful site with all the features you could need. The toilets in the tent field are basic but there is another block near the shop which are slightly higher spec. The site was very peaceful (apart from the nesting Oyster Cachers!) and clean. Freezer available for your ice packs but its in the shop and it's only open 8-5 which if your bit forgetful like us can cause you warm drinks!
Each afternoon we we're treated to a Red kite display above the site so no need to go on the trail around the Forrest! Some really good attractions nearby. We saw wild red dear between the site and Castle Douglas twice.
Plenty of space allotted for each pitch and if you have a long lead you can be completely away from any other tents.
No pub within walking distance is a downside but the view of the Loch makes up for it!
The only downside of the whole site is they mow the lawn a lot and don't pick up cutting so if you have a crazy dog like us or small children you bring half of it back home with you!

Watched all the reviews for this site for over a year deciding when we could fit it in. Arrived 23rd May (bank holiday weekend). 2 women arrive! so, did they wait to see who arrived for pitch F6? worst camping pitch I've ever been allocated in all my camping years. How do you eat from a plate sliding off a table?? when we were showed round, I said 'on the hill? ' just shrugged his shoulders and said aye! how how much do I regret accepting this! asked for a late checkout and was charged £10.
Tent field was busy with /without electrics but the toilet/shower facilities DID NOT cater for the amount of campers. 3 toilets 2/3 showers in a portacabin. Outdoor wash area is an add on! No chemical waste anywhere near tent field.
4 star on Trip Advisor. Please explain why?? Cannot leave a review :-(
Don't think we'll be back
Not ideal for people without kids!

We have just arrived home after spending a couple of days at this site and it was fantastic. My husband and I was there with our 5 children and had a great time, apart from the weather which rained the whole time we were there. The site has 2 great parks 4 the kids and plenty of space for them to play on their bikes. Also this is 1 of the cleanest and quietest sites we have been on so if you are looking for lively evenings it's not for you. The only downfall about this site is the shop its not very well stocked. We will be back also recommended it to family.

Great Site with great views and lots to do for all the family.
Lots to do off site too in the local area. We had a 4 night stay here with one very wet night, but the tent performed as it should, unlike others nearby.
I have only one gripe and that is the toilets are small for the size of the site, if you wake up late you could find yourself in a queue for the loo or a shower, 3 loo's and 3 showers each M/F. But apart from that it was a very well run site and we will return next year.

Nice spacious site by the Loch, great views, good facilities and friendly staff at a reasonable overnight fee. Nice and quiet in June and handy for the Galloway Forest Park for cycling, walking and red kite spotting. Has canoes and boats for hire on the Loch and lots of information in the main building
Negatives: midges and lack of range of food in the shop - could do with fresh rolls in the morning!
