Lovely setting with beautiful views but sadly let down by the lack of facilities.

Showers require tokens but the shop & reception shuts at 5pm. The toilets & showers need renovating and are quite far from the tent field and the shop is really only sweets, soft drinks, ice creams & a few toys.

Expensive too - £31 for a family of 4! Everything costs extra on top of the basic pitch. We asked if we could leave the trailer on site for a few hours and were told by the manager that it would be £10 to park it from 12noon to 4pm! They were very quiet - only another 4 units in the field too.

Went to this camp site for two nights with my 10 year old son. The tent field was large with great views across the loch, you had choice of were to pitch, which I prefer. The swing park wasn't up to much, a small slide and a swing but then who cares when the loch is there. My son had a great time in the water and he could walk out a good bit before it got too deep.
We hired canoes out for an unbelievably cheap rate of £2.50 for each canoe per hour, wish I'd hired them out longer but wasn't sure how my son would cope.
Toilet block was clean with showers that took tokens. The one minor gripe I had was that the shop closed at 5 pm. I really liked this site and would recommend it for fishing or water sports or if your just like me and want to get away from it all.

For my first ever camping expedition, I stayed at this site for two nights with my husband and our dog - I was very impressed by the overall experience. The shower blocks had no queues and were cleaned regularly; there was a separate disabled toilet / shower. The only comment I would make it that although we don't have kids, I noticed a lady with a small child finding it a bit difficult to dry and dress in the shower areas as there were no facilities to lie the child on (like nappy changing table) - she seemed happy enough on the floor though!

The site is very spacious, and although there were plenty of vans and tents it was very quiet. As the tent field has no marked pitches, there are some wonderful spots to pitch up with lovely views of the loch. Lovely area for walking too.

Nearby Catle Douglas (6 miles by car) provides plenty of places to eat, drink and shop!

Would definitely recommend the site to all and will probably return before the end of the season.

This is the second time we have been to this site. There is access directly onto the loch via several little beaches. The water is clear and often warm enough to paddle and swim. The tent field is huge but I'd be disappointed if I were a caravan or motor home as their views are not as good.
There is a small shop with basics. It also has loads of tourist info. You can hire canoes and row boats or bikes. The double canoe was £4 and a single £2.50, which is great value.
The showers are adequate and although they are 50p, it does mean I didn't have to queue and they gave you plenty of time. There is a small playground but the rope swing and loch was the main draw for children. We mostly went to bike tracks (the 7 stanes) but there is a lot to do around. The main problem is struggling to tear ourselves away from the site. We saw hawks and the red kite. Our son likes to fish and because he is under 15 it's free. I also like that they recycle.

This site is beautiful with very friendly staff and great value. We rarely go back to sites but this is a definite.

Although we hadn't booked the warden found us a pitch with electric hook up.

Site has fantastic views over the lock.

Shop did not have much basic stock.

The site was packed and I have to say that you could have touched the caravan pitched next to us - pitches are small. Also our pitch had a view of the toilet block and very little else. The 'static tourer' behind us had a 4x4; massive awning; picnic table and speedboat so space was very restricted and felt very cramped.

We have just returned home from 2 nights staying at Loch Ken. We arrived at 7.30pm so the reception had closed, which we knew about as they had told us when we booked. We pitched to the right on the field, as directed, as we didn't have electric hookup and chose to a pitch at the top of the slope, which had a lovely view over the loch. The pitches weren't mapped out and it is really just a big field, which suited us fine. When we went to pay and use the shop the staff were all very helpful and friendly.
The toilet block is standard, nothing fancy but not too basic either, didn't use the showers so can't comment on them. They were cleaned twice a day but it was so wet and muddy that the floors were quickly muddy again, but everything else was clean. However, as the doors and windows are left open all the time there are loads of insects and wasps in the toilet area. I think closing the doors, as they do in some campsites, would combat this. The dishwashing area was adequate.

We have three children (12,10,7) and they had great fun. There is a small park for them and a rope swing over the loch, which they didn't get to go on many times as it was wet some of the time and we wouldn't have been able to dry their clothes if they had fallen in! The middle of the field was empty of tents so a lot of the children played there as well: cricket, frisby, kite flying. All our children made friends with other children.

We didn't really explore the surrounding area as we were enjoying relaxing and not doing much, but next time we will explore Castle Douglas a bit more.

The main bonus for us was, having camped at Loch Lomond last year, there were no midges! which can spoil a weekend away!

We will definitely go back to this campsite soon.

We stayed at Loch Ken for 2 nights during the 6 week holidays. The weather was ok when we got there but it rained the next day all morning, so alot of people were all sitting in their tents (like us) waiting for it to stop; eventually it did :)

PITCHES

There wasn't marked pitches for the tents, which we were pleased about, as things can be too organized for us! There are 2 large fields, but we were told to only use the right-hand-side one. The ground was really quite hard where we pitched, but as it was quite windy we didnt want to be on top of the hill so we just got on. The field is not all flat, but has great views of Loch Ken from all angles. We were pleased with our spot but very surprised when we returned from a day out to find another family had pitched their tent less than a metre behind us-why do people do this!?

TOILET BLOCK

We found the toilet block ok. There was a few showers, which were ok. The loos were adequate.

SHOP

The small on site shop was quite well stocked, and had a fair bit of info on the nearby attractions. The staff were lovely.

THE AREA

We were very pleased with the nearby attractions-Castle Douglas was great :) There are some good cafe's there.

Not the best site we've been to-it was a little bit too busy for us, and we were very glad that we didnt have a caravan as they were literally on top of each other. We would probably come back.

Arrived and greeted by a friendly and helpful young lady who showed us where to a pitch. Great pitch overlooking the loch. Nice little play park area near the water (so children should be watched). Plenty of open area so felt spacious. People very nice and helpful on this site. There are some statics and looks like some season pitches. Peaceful and relaxing site, clean toilets and dishwashing area.

Surrounding area was very nice and rural, plenty of walking and wildlife. The Red Kites are a must to see, nearby feed station (farm) cost £5 each person, worth the experience and view of the birds.

Great site, only downside, we stopped 2 nights wished we could have stayed longer. Would definitely like to visit again but stay longer and spend some time on the loch which is accessible directly from the site.

We have just spent a night at Loch Ken and it was fantastic. There were 6 of us with 2 large tents oh and not forgetting our dog. We arrived and were met by a very smiley and friendly person. Didn't get her name, unfortunately. We went into the field and found a great spot to pitch our tents, on the top of the site with great views of the Loch. The area was clean and tidy and very well kept, we did bend a few pegs in the area we had chosen with a few rocks under the grass, but nothing major. The site also has a dog walk, dogs are to be kept on the lead at all times.

The toilets, showers, laundry and washing up facilities were very clean. We had our 2 children with us aged 7 and 14, there was a play area (not so much for the eldest to do, but we took a frisbee and ball and all had a great time.)and a rope swing, which we all had a go on! and boats which we also went in, this was fun and our dog enjoyed swimming from boat to boat, very reasonable prices for the pitch and the boat hire. It cost us £3.00 per boat for an hour, and for the 2 tents with electric hook up was £28.00 for the saturday night.

This place is ideal if you want a nice relaxing break with great views and friendly atmosphere.

There is a small shop, no entertainment on site, which was perfect for us as we all just wanted to relax.

We really enjoyed our stay, especially seeing the baby ducks and swans on the Loch. Wish we had been able to stay longer.

Would definitely go back.

The kids loved it , had rope swing over water ,they even went swimming in loch . Plenty of play area for kids . This is a quiet park on a hole , will definitely go again the park is well maintained, the warden out cutting grass at every available opportunity no litter there are recycling points well worth a visit
