We found the site to be very well kept and in an ideal location for walking water sports fishing or anything outdoors.Tent field is large area of superb grass set on a rolling hill but with plenty of level areas.

The day we arrived was very wet with torrential rain all day, we expected a muddy field, but not so as the ground drainage here is excellent with few muddy areas.

Very good children's play ground.Shops etc at Castle Douglas six miles away.Plenty of outdoor things to do in surrounding area. Do go to see the kites being fed.

Three taps near at hand in tent field, short walk to main toilet block max 100yds.The best pitches in my view are near to the loch without power,so do come without ehu and enjoy a superb well kept site.

After visiting this site for the last 5 years the improvements made this year were much appreciated, even though the majority of them were for children. We have always found the owners and staff to be polite always ready to help. The extra pitches for electric hook ups made it so that they could accommodate more families. The extra shower and toilet block on the tent field was brilliant and having the 2 blocks meant there was no queueing and the staff were able to keep them clean.

The children's play area had been well thought out even down to a small football pitch for children and parents alike to have a kick about on.

Castle Douglas has a very good fish and chip shop named Moores, and there is a very good Curry House called the Merrick Hotel.

It is a must to visit the Red Kite Feeding station near Loch Ken Dee Marshes.

At the Marshes there are hides for you to watch the water fowl. This is a David Bellamy conservation area. Well worth seeing.

We enjoy the Camp site and the surrounding area so much we are booked in for 2011

Fantastic family campsite, probably the best we've ever been to! Made very welcome by the friendly staff and owner and we were given a pitch ideal for our very large tent. The site is very well sited with beautiful views over the loch. There is lots to do for the children with daily events and very reasonable canoe, boat and bike hire. The small football pitch has the most fantastic view down the loch.

Our 12 year old son gives the site 10 out of 10 and would love to spend the whole of the next summer holidays here! Lets hope we can fit in a week or two.

The area as a whole is stunning with loads to see and do, even after over 2 weeks we still came away with things we hadn't done.

The site as a whole is very well maintained and the facilities are more than adequate, yes the main toilet block is a little out dated but its clean and there is plenty of hot water (which in my experience makes a change) and it has character missing from so many new soulless facilities.

If in need of a meal out we can recommend the Selkirk Arms in Kirkcudbright where we had the best restuarant meal we have ever had with lots of local flavours, and great for the kids too.

Castle Douglas has a good selection of shops for all tastes with Tescos as well as good quality butchers and bakers, plenty of souvenir oppurtunities as well as a great brewery! Very helpful tourist information.

Galloway Forest Park is a must, plenty of walks and biking opportunities and great visitor centres.

We have just returned from our first scottish camping venture. We are already planning a return visit to Scotland and will be booking Loch Ken for definite.

On arrival at the site the owner and shop staff were very helpful and friendly and you cannot be anything but impressed with the setting. A picture postcard image awaits you with rolling hills and stunning expansive loch.

Our ten year old was straight to the play area at the edge of the loch, which seemed to be a fairly new addition, and well thought out. We had booked for EHU and got a great pitch which was fairly level, however further up the 'hook up wall' pitches were on a distinct slope. There were just 15 tents on the site on the week we stayed (Scotttish kids had gone back to school) and it was just ideally tranquil and quiet.

As other reviewers have commented, the main toilet block could do with a face lift, however we found them to be clean and well kept, so cant really ask more thsn that.

Castle douglas is a lovely little town and I recommend the Pizza/Chip shop at the bottom of the village and the cafe'mad hatters'. Both had lovely meals and not badly priced. In addition to tesco, there is a large co-op and wilkinsons store, however these are set back from the main high street, so you need to ask a local!

We spent many days out and if visiting in August, you have to do Thursday evening in Kircudbight, for scottish night in the harbour square. Kirkcudbright itself was one of our favourite places visited, however I would not repeat a trip to galloway wildlife park as it was very disappointing.

With Ayr,Dumfries, and Gretna all 30-45 minutes drive they are well worth a visit, catching the Air Museum, camera obscura and devils porridge museums. Pick up the Dumfires & Galloway tourist book for free at any tourist info office - it contains 2 for 1 offers, and has a great local map - don't follow your sat nav you will incur long detours. The A75 is fast but don't miss the Gretna Tourist Route as an alternative as roads are lovely to drive, not windy and you wont miss the lots of interesting places to visit.

Had a lovely weekend here. The site is right on the edge of the Loch and you are able to hire kayaks and boats in reception where the staff are friendly.

The caravans look a bit packed in but the tent area was a very large field where you could more or less pitch wherever you wanted. The field is on a slope but it was easy enough to find a relatively flat pitch. However, if you wanted EHU for your tent (we didn't) most of the pitches are at quite an angle.

The toilets for the tent area are in a portable cabin but the showers were free and hot. The older toilet block was nice and clean too and had hair dryers, dish washing and laundry facilities, but was a fair walk from the top of the tent field.

Children's playpark was great and plenty of space to run around. There's even a small football pitch. Good dog walking area too.

There is a sign asking you to keep the noise down after 10pm which most people kept to, however there was a loud group there on the Friday night still shouting until 2.30am when some other poor camper told them to shut up! Happily one of their group had gone the next day and the rest of them were much quieter on the second evening. Not sure if they were pulled up by the staff or not.

The small shop stocks basics and is reasonably priced. The nearest shop and pub are in Cross Michael with main supermarkets in Castle Douglas about 7 miles away.

We were only here for a weekend but there looks as if there is lots to do in the area and we will definitely go back.

All in all a nice site. My only criticism would be the lack of fresh water pipes around the site and the long walk to wash the dishes!

The site is generally peaceful with the only disturbance being from the main road behind the site (which can have HGVs thundering past but then go for 5 minutes with no traffic at all) and from groups of campers late at night or into the early hours. Not that the site seems to attract rowdy visitors, just that there doesn't seem to be any on site warden presence in the evening and even big family / friends groups can get a bit noisy after a few drinks with their barbecue. Probably fine for most pitches but a minor irritant if you're next to them.

The on site shop has a reasonable range and didn't seem to be too badly priced. There's also a decent little general store in Crossmichael and Castle Douglas has lots of foodie shops as well as a fair sized Tesco open late.

The children's facilities are pretty good: a football pitch and swings in the tent field and swings, slide, sandpit and play area between the loch and touring area. There's also the rope swings along side the loch and a giant chess set. Plus, there's loads of room to run around or fly kites as well as some little walks from the tent field. Our kids certainly didn't complain of boredom.

The loch is a big draw. In July it was swimmable (but cold!) and we hired canoes and a rowing boat from the site. There also seemed to be a number of people camping and fishing. Probably the best benefit is the view that the loch gives, with hills and woods in the background - fantastic outlook. There's also red kites flying overhead and the kids liked seeing the bats flitting about by the old railway bridge behind the tent field.

There was lots of space for tents - though less for those who wanted EHUs - but caravans were quite close together. There were a couple of slopes but you'd have to make a real effort to find a pitch that wasn't flat and the grass was kept mown daily.

The old toilet block was fine if aged but the new portable cabins in the tent field were good - 3 toilets and 3 shower cubicles for men and the same for women. Loads of hot water. Cleaned daily but probably could have done with a second clean a day as wet grass trailed through and one of the water pipes in the men's leaked a bit. Plus, I suppose the gents did get a bit 'messy'!

Overall though we thought this a really good site.

We stayed Loch Ken for three nights towards the end of July 2010. It is an excellent site in a very good location. If you are into fishing or watersports then look no further. We arrived on a Thursday and were given a fairly level pitch among some caravans as we wanted the use of a hookup. The 6 metre rule is not applied on this part of the site so we did feel a bit close to other units but nothing that was a problem. The playpark for the kids has been added to and is very good.

There are notices which ask patrons to be quiet after 10pm. Unfortunately this was neither observed or enforced with a number of dogs barking and some people just being a bit too loud. We have a 14 month old child who struggled to get to sleep as a result.

This would not put me off returning to the site as I would ask for a pitch in the large tent field thus giving more space between the tents. The owner of the site was present during the day and made everyone feel welcome. The receptionist was also very friendly.

Facilities on the site are clean and well maintained. The on site shop is also very good.

This site is well worth visiting particularly for families. We intend to return soon.

Love this site. Easy to find with nice access. Pitches overlook the loch. Open grassy area to front of caravan area with a new play park for children or rent a cricket set full refund when set returned.

This is a loch side site great if children are supervised due to direct access to water. Tent area is spacious and never looks overcrowded. Peaceful and relaxing site. Great for fishing. Boats available to hire or take your own. Direct access to loch from the site.

Static van area to one side of the site which are available to rent. Short drive into Castle Douglas with usual shops, Tesco, petrol stations etc., and plenty of eating out places. On site shop has a good selection of everyday items, milk, eggs, bread etc.

Red Kites can be seen from the site (even cheeky to come down and pinch your fish), swans, ducks etc. Water activity close by with water skiing lessons on offer. Lovely peaceful site. If you want pubs, discos etc this is not the place for you. If you want peaceful walks, bike rides, fishing, boating and relaxing in lovely countryside this is hard to beat. Looking forward to visiting this site again

First time to this site and will definitely return. Told when we booked we would be allocated pitch on arrival, arrived after 6pm on Friday night and were told we could pitch anywhere. Shop usually shuts 5pm. Shop staff very friendly and helpful. Tent field huge and overlooks loch- lots of space and fab views, very tranquil. Ground quite hard, needed rock pegs, some of which got bent.

Top end of tent field porta cabins with three showers and loos each for ladies and gents, very clean, free showers, and very hot water. Locked between 6am and 10pm which is a bit of a pain, but equally clean, warm toilet block a short walk away, near to shop, which stocks basic items, fresh rolls and papers etc.

Site well kept, tidy and quiet, warden checks round after 10pm. Recycling facilities.

Tree swing at loch side for kids, as well as play park, large grassed area sectioned off in tent field for football/ games, although site quiet enough when we were there to play beside tent. Kids hired double canoe and lifejackets for £4/ hr- loved it, seemed good value too.

A very relaxing weekend - will def return!

Castle Douglas-6 miles away, Tesco and co-op,pubs, hotels, plus lots of lovely individual shops. Kirkcudbright 9 miles away, Artists Town, Broughton house,Harbour, Art Gallery, tea rooms, pubs,, small tesco, shops. A lovely area to visit.

Visited park early in May, very beautiful park, shop girl very helpful and friendly (warden a big asset to the park), shop very expensive.

Went back weekend just past, new staff in shop, not the same. Warden still brilliant.

New playarea, not really for very young children. Showerblock very clean as usual, just a distance to walk to from tent field. Hired rowing boat (very old) but enjoyed it out on the water.
