Just had a two night stay at this beautiful campsite. It's situation in a gorgeous position, and looks particularly amazing at 5am (thanks for that, small children).
We paid for a pitch with hook up, but it was very sloped, they say they're going to do some work to sort that out in future, but at the moment it's tricky to find a flat site for a tent, but we did, with glorious views, plus we could see the good play park, so could let the weans run wild.
Shower facilities were good and clean, although toilet roll ran out in the mornings, but they were very well maintained. We had no problems with noise - one group of campers got a bit merry one night, but there are signs up asking folks to quiet down at 10pm, and they did. There were a lot of dogs, and some owners weren't very good at cleaning up after them - we ran out of clothes for the baby who (not being great on her feet) kept landing in poo.
The campsite says it has free wifi and we tried to connect, but to no avail - that said we didn't ask at the shop.
The staff were helpful, and we'd stay there again (unless we can find somewhere with no dogs).
We had fabulous fish and chips from a shop in Castle Douglas and a great day out at Cream O Galloway, but we've got small children. There were lots of fun things to do nearby for older kids and adults.

My camping group consisted of myself, partner and our ten year old daughter. We were staying on an electric hook up tent pitch. What a lovely, well maintained site! Upon arrival we were escorted by a friendly staff member to our pitch, who then GAVE us an electric extension to ensure that we could pitch on the flattest part of our pitch, and still reach the electricity. No deposit was required, he merely asked that we gave it back when we were leaving.
We were originally staying over for two nights, but the beautiful scenery of the loch, combined with the relaxing atmosphere and sunshine forced us to extend our stay.
The toilets, showers and outdoor dishwashing facilities were clean. Onsite kayaks, rowing boats, fishing, playpark, football pitches, giant chess / draughts, table tennis, and rope swings over the loch meant that all of the children on holiday had fun, and I could only tempt mine back with toasted marshmallows.
BBQ and fire are permitted, as long as they are not directly on the grass. Dogs are to be kept on leads. An on site shop stocks all of the basics.
Castle Douglas is only a short seven mile trip away, and has a Tesco, Coop, 4 butchers, petrol station, everything needed.
Overall, I must say that Loch Ken Holiday Park is the nicest campsite, with the friendliest staff. We enjoyed it so much that we will be returning for a short stay towards the end of this month. Very impressive, ten out of ten.

We stayed here for 2 nights. Huge tent field, some spaces with EHU. We didn't need it so we stayed near the top of the field, nearer the road yes, but quieter and less people as most appeared to want loch-side. It had been raining before we arrived and during our first night - but pitch drained well and the site seems very free of mud baths etc. Very well kept facilities - clean. Good showers, plenty of space, good water temperature and pressure. Nice little shop with the basics, tons of local information available from a an information room. Canoes and boats for hire too. The place is well run, well managed, nice staff, nothing too much trouble. The wardens were out each night to ensure everyone was OK, and that if appropriate, people were told to quieten down. Play areas for children, not used by us, but popular. Small soccer pitch. The caravan area seemed a little more cramped, but then they were very busy. No-where is far from the loch at all. You will need a car - some local walks from the site, but no shops nearby. 15 mins to Castle Douglas in the car (Tesco, Co-Op etc). Lovely site, well cared for. Will def return.

Just back from our three night trip to Loch Ken. We stayed on one of the EHU pitches which thankfully was on a flat pitch but most had a slight slope to them. The view from our tent was breathtaking. Thankfully the site was not too full over our long weekend although the caravan/motorhome section did look very busy.
The showers/toilets were kept immaculate and did not encounter any problems with these during our stay.
There were only three sinks for cleaning dishes and a sign was up saying that further sinks would be available in the tent field in June but no signs of any being built.
Our eldest son loved swimming in the loch, which surprisingly was not as cold as I thought it would be. The sun was shining for us the whole of the time we were there so that does help.
The playpark was well used but right by the lochside so younger kids need to be well watched as the loch is very deep in parts.
We have never visited this part of Scotland before and would definitely return to this area and Loch Ken.

The location is gorgeous, and we pitched our tent within yards of the lochside. We had red kites flying directly over the tent several times!
Things to do:
- Play in boats: People had hired sit-on canoes from the site and were clearly enjoying themselves. We based ourselves here for a 2 day canoe trip along Loch Ken and the River Dee, landing the canoes at the campsite overnight.
- Bird watching: we explored the red kite trail, including forest/lochside walks and the feeding station at Laurieston. We saw loads of kites and an Osprey at Threave Castle.
Staff: friendly and informative
Toilet cabins: fine if a bit grassy!
Noise: no problems
Suited us very well, we had a great time, and would very much recommend it.

We recently stayed at Loch Ken for just the night en-route to Oban. It was a mid week night so was very quiet. We pitched at the top of the tent field as we wanted some shelter from the poor weather which was wet and windy.
The pitch was fairly level although I'm not sure there are any totally level pitches on the field which seems entirely sloping. The toilet/shower cabin seemed very new and was very clean. That was until another group of campers had used it the following morning.
The road noise can be quite loud if you're at the top of the field. Loch is very nice with lots and lots of birds. No designated dog walk but our two seemed to enjoy a quick swim in the loch! All in all a nice site.
I just felt that there wasn't enough to interest us in that area but that's just my opinion.
I think if you had young kids they'd love it. Maybe the poor weather just seemed to put a little bit of a downer on our experience.

Beautiful location along the loch with splendid views. Booking very easy and staff are extremely pleasant and helpful. Had a problem late evening on the first night which when mentioned to 'the boss' the next morning was immediately sorted out and an explanation was given as to what the problem had been.
Loved the shower cubicles that had shower, toilet and sink all together. Water always nice and hot and whatever time we went. Toilet/shower block did get a bit messy at times due to the rainy weather and the grass coming in on peoples shoes and wellies. However this is no reflection on the campsite staff who regularly cleaned. It was more the fact that the people using the facilities didn't bother to clean their footwear on the carpet provided or use the mop to help keep it tidier.
A number of children on site but not too bad noise wise as they mostly played in the children's area and along the loch side.
The shop had adequate supplies of essentials like papers, bread, milk along with toiletries, throat sweets, washing up liquid etc. They especially do a superb icecream in little tubs which I can highly recommend called 'Cream of Galloway' - truly delicious.
You can visit the location of where this is made and it has some sort of adventure playground for various ages to it which appears to be very popular. The car park was crammed full when we went in the middle of the afternoon.
From what I could see they have an icecream parlour, guided tours, an inside play area, an outside area which looks as though it covers an area of woodland with ropebridges, walks etc and it also appeared to have people on mountain bikes riding around. Probably worth a look on the internet.
A car (or if you are an avid cyclist) is definitely necessary. The site is about six miles or so from Castle Douglas, fifty five miles from Stranraer. There is a small village shop on the roadside in one of the villages halfway between Loch Ken and Castle Douglas but nothing in Parton itself except for a few houses.
It was delightful to watch the red kites most of the days that we were there. They seemed to prefer the cooler windy weather as apposed to the last two days of our holiday with were rather hot. Several miles away from the site there is a place you can go to see them and watch them being fed - leaflets are available on the site. The information room is available at any time of the day or night and is very well laid out and clear in sections of interest (best info room I've seen).
As stated by others you can hire canoes/row boats for which you are given appropriate life jackets to wear. I would recommend it if you get the chance. We had an hour on a row boat and had a great time (and I have the blisters to prove it.
Would love to go back sometime in the future but as journey takes us five hours to get there it is not likely to be very soon - unfortunately.

Had a lovely 3 night stay at Loch Ken. The caravan section was very full and seemed a bit cramped but the tent field is very spacious with loads of room for the children to play (there were people flying kites, playing cricket, cycling etc etc etc with no trouble).
Small football pitch and a couple of swings in field as well. Loads for the kids to do. Close proximity to water so great for slightly older kids - would need to supervise younger ones well.
Beautifully kept site - toilets and showers clean and loads of hot water for washing up.
My only gripe was the noise in the evenings. It's lovely to hear children play but screaming at gone 10.30pm was a bit much. There are signs up to ask people to be quiet after 10pm but these were largely ignored. It is a shame as without this it would be 10/10.
Site staff very friendly and helpful.

Arrived on Mon for 4 days however on arrival and choosing our pitch and seeing how beautiful it was we decided to stay an extra couple of nights. We chose a pitch in the tent field right on the lochside which was ideal for my partner and son who love fishing (permits can be bought at reception for £5 for 24 hours).
We also hired a boat and went arond the loch. There really is no need to leave this campsite providing the weather is ok we absolutley loved it and will definitely return.
The only negative was for me the porta loos were a distance from our pitch but we really wanted to be by the loch side so had to comprimise (might invest in a porta loo of my own). Brilliant site. Perfect for kids and adults of all ages.
Loos and showers warm, clean and family friendly. 5* camp site

Just back from 5 nights at Loch Ken. Overall this is a really nice site.
We'll start with the minus points to get them out of the way:
1. Quite a walk to the washing-up sinks (though I didn't mind at all)
2. Loos in the tent field were just a little inadequate size-wise at busy times and could have done with cleaning more than once a day (though they were easily clean enough, really. I'm just being over-fussy!)
3. The site is popular with dog owners; this is not really a problem as they were all kept well under control and there was no visible dog mess, yet sometimes I wished they'd stop barking.
4. When we were there there seemed to be several large groups (extended families, mostly) who had set-up sort of sub-encampments. Some of these were a bit noisy at times - why-oh-why must people bring their pop music with them, however 'quietly' it is played? This, though, is not a gripe about the site; more about the nature of some modern campers!
And the plus points:
1. Gorgeous loch-side location: hire a boat (or bring your own), bob about on the loch or up the little creek opposite the site. Its blissful, peaceful, teeming with wildlife. We loved this.
2. Very friendly & helpful staff
3. Boat hire (though not cheap)
4. Very large tent field, with freedom to pitch wherever we wanted
My son and I have been going on 'Dad 'n' Lad' camping trips for the last 6 years, so we know what we're doing and what to look for. This is an excellent site, and the plus points far outweigh the minus ones.
