The site is in a fantastic location with the amazing Hadrian's Wall, Birdoswald, the Roman Army Museum, Vindolanda and many other roman sites within easy striking distance. The AD122 bus service stops outside the farm gate so a day's walking can easily be done without having to use the car. Hexham is about 20 minutes drive away and is really worth exploration. The Abbey is incredible and has a lovely parkland area behind it.
We stayed at Herding Hill over the Spring Bank holiday weekend 27-30 May and, unfortunately, experienced the full force of exceptional driving rain and 70mph winds. However, thanks to Steve, the owner, we found our two tents upright and intact when we came back to the site after a day's exploration of the area on Sunday early evening. Steve had positioned his landrover to protect our tents from the wind and had checked pegs and fastenings throughout the day. We really cannot thank him enough as his actions were over and above our expectations. We were really overwhelmed by his kindness and thoughtfulness. We know that we were not the only campers who were helped by Steve that day. There was a such a warm and friendly welcome on our arrival from both Steve and Anne and we were delighted to hear of their plans for further development of the site. It will be an amazing site when all the plans come to fruition.
Despite the weather, we loved the site and had a wonderful weekend. Many, many thanks again to Steve and Anne for being such fantastic hosts. Your hard work and dedication deserves so much success.

Stayed in a wigwam from 20th-25th May. Very cosy, larger than we have used before, full size fridge, electric kettle and electric heater.
This site will be an absolute little gem when the landscaping has been completed, and we will certainly be returning to see the progress. I understand that there will possibly be a wigwam village in the near future, at the moment there are two wigwams. There are also plenty of hook ups and hard standings for caravans and camper vans.
The owners are two of the friendliest and welcoming we have ever met and have some fantastic ideas for the site. The alpacas were lovely but we only saw them one day as they don't like the wind and it was rather 'breezy' when we stayed.
The site is perfectly placed for walking to Hadrian's Wall, Cawfield Crags is approx 15 minutes walk away and for those less energetic the bus stops right outside the camp site gates. We were very surprised how close the Wall was to the site. There is a pub 5 mins down the road and we can recommend the food on the site itself (which is also licensed). Haltwistle is a 5 minute drive away but would be an uphill hike for walking back.
Free wifi is available close to the shop, but we also managed to pick this up in the wigwam a few times.
We would certainly recommend this site to anyone wanting to visit Hadrian's Wall and we will certainly be returning and wish the owners every success in their venture.

After a tiring walk on Hadrian's Wall what a pleasure to visit this lovely campsite and tea room made more pleasurable by cakes, hot drinks and a warm welcome from the owners.
The site is close to Chesters Roman fort where we enjoyed a great family day out.
There is a pub within walking distance of the site, always a good idea! The facilities are good with the promise of a new toilet and shower block to come.
We particularly loved the Alpacas which were grazing in a fenced area close to the shop. With so much history close to hand another visit is definitely on the cards.

What a find! if you are into Roman history and beautiful scenery, this is what the area has needed.
Obviously the site is still under development but nonetheless we were made to feel very comfortable and welcome.
The owners have planted a lot of grass seed so when we return it will hopefully be a lot greener. Also a further shower block is due to be constructed in the near future.
The farm shop is handy and the cafe is great serving reasonably priced and tasty dishes. Added to this there are a couple of really decent pubs nearby.
Of course its not a Butlins holiday camp but that suits me fine. For people who wish to walk in some of the most breathtakingly beautiful scenery this part of Britain has to offer, you would be foolish to overlook this place

This is a brand new site, and my expectations were as such. The location was fantastic, the views were great and the sunset over the hills was spectacular.
Both owners made us feel very welcome, and made sure the pitch was suitable. The owner even helped a young couple who were struggling with a broken tent pole to get a fix in place and the tent put up, that's service.
The Roman sites are about 10 minutes drive from the site, and Haltwhistle has a small Sainsbury's for shopping. I agree with the previous reviewer, that the walk up the hill, from Haltwhistle in 15 minutes would be difficult, but the walk to the pub is about that time, and really worth it for the food and beer.
Only one criticism would be that when the site is busy, the showers and toilets could get very busy.

This campsite is in a fantastic location and the pub at the top of the hill is about a ten minute walk with good beer, atmosphere and food.
I have to take my hat off to anyone who can walk back from a pub/shop/cafe in haltwhistle in 10/15 minutes because you will be walking a good half a mile up a 1 in 5 hill and the centre of haltwhistle is about a mile away.
As at April 2011, the campsite is still under development which means.
The campsite has only one shower, two loos and a very small sink (with no mirror) for each gender and I have to say that I did not want to be in the facilities with the people that I was camping with let alone a stranger so this may be an issue if the campsite fills up all of its pitches.
When I stayed there was at least one earth moving vehicle on site and a fair amount of uncovered soil and not sure how this will work when normal summertime weather returns.
For those of you who have tents, this campsite is situated between two hillocks and let's hope that the earth moving vehicle is going to level this site off a little because at the moment, we struggled to pitch our tent on a flat section and the campsite was not full.
The farm shop/cafe looks great but it was only open between 9 to 5 so our (reasonably) early morning fry up came from haltwhistle.
All in all, this site has a lot of potential and, assuming the owners get this right, this could be an excellent campsite.
I suspect that for 2011, people need to go into this with their eyes open and get the owners to tell them where they are with the development because the campsite has a number of limitations which may or may not impact the way you want to camp.

Just back from a bank holiday stay at Herding Hill Farm Campsite. Upon arriving both the owners made us feel very welcome, showing us the facilities available and ensuring that we were happy with the pitch given. Although as previously stated the site is still being developed this in no way detracted us from the beautiful location of the site and the enjoyment of a wonderful weekend. The farmshop is superb offering local produce for sale along with the amazing teashop serving delicious food.
We felt privileged to be able to share their ideas which will come to fruition in due course so they achieve their dream of running a super campsite with great facilities in what can only be described as a breathtaking part of the country. Hadrians wall only ten minutes away, Haltwhistle a few minutes walk and Hexham within easy driving distance for some super shops.
We have already booked to go back in July, only this time in one of their cosy wigwams and look forward to meeting their wonderfully friendly Alpacas again.

We were the first campers on this brand new campsite. They have a wonderful farm shop and cafe where we had a great breakfast and hot meal for tea from their menu of home made dishes. The food and their friendly welcome more than made up for the fact that the site is not yet established as far as the grass and shrubs go.
The site is open with great views all round. There is also a bus stop for the Hadrians Wall bus that saves you using the car to visit places along the wall. We went to Housesteads for £2.90 each and walked back - 6 miles. There is also a lovely walk down into Haltwhistle - 15 mins and a nice pub 5 mins along the road.
Another feature everyone seemed to be enjoying are the fire baskets and logs so campers could sit around a fire in the evening this is a site where families make their own entertainment as there is no park or clubhouse. It is a lovely place to stay. Beautiful, quiet and peaceful but close to the tourist attractions in the area.
