Just got back from this campsite, had lovely weather and a great weekend. It was great owners are really friendly, helped us out big time in a sticky situation. After driving 3. 5 hours we got to the site and realised we had left the keys to our roof-box at home, saw the owner Steve who went to the office to have a look what keys he had a miracle he had a key that opened our roof box! Site was very clean, toilets and showers were fantastic, power showers with plenty of room for your clothes, ladies had 2 cubicles which had baths in which is great for kids, also had baby changing facilities, radio was playing in the toilet block and heated floor and sauna to hire. Site had wigwams which our friends stayed in these looked good, some also had hot-tubs. Kids loved the playground which had a fence to keep them from running off, and the animals (donkeys, rabbits, ducks and alpacas). Food from the cafe bar was very nice and was delivered to your tent. Only 1 negative was that when the site was full there was no grass area for children to play games that was not right in front of your tent, there may have been down in the bottom field where no electric pitches were but not at the top where we were. We walked down to the village in Haltwhistle which was a lovely walk, we found the path through the fields and forest which had some stunning views, ended up at the Jubilee pub which was lovely and the landlord offered to drive us back to the site at the end of the day as the taxis's had just taken a group from there and it saved us walking (which is very steep) this was very much appreciated and he wouldn't accept any money from us. We would really recommend both the campsite and the pub and will be returning. :-)

We were first time campers and found this site about an hour and a half from where we live. We arrived around 7pm and were warmly greeted and taken to our pitch. After setting up we ordered a pizza from the on site cafe and although they only open till 8. 30 still fulfilled our order this was delivered to our tent around 8. 45. The facilities were great music in the bathrooms and were warm and clean. The site location is ideal for walking to hadrians wall and about a 1 mile walk to halt whistle. This is a family run site and you tell this by the welcoming atmosphere nothing is to much for them there's is also a pub about 1 mile away the mile castle inn which serves hot meals and is ideal to stop for a quick drink after walking to hadrians wall. Also in haltwistle there are a few shops and a sainsburys so no need to stock up before you go. It was a beautifully weekend and a lovely touch for the kids was a visit from the local ice cream man. All in a all a great first time camping experience would definitely stay here again

This site is situated within beautiful surroundings! The staff were friendly and welcoming. The shower blocks were clean and everything was at hand in one area, though we were there at a quiet period. There are saunas to hire by the hour for £15!Which I thought was quite steep, considering we were there as a couple but they were in separate shower/toilet blocks, therefore my hubby and I would not be able to go in together. They also deliver pizzas to your tent between 6PM and 7:30PM which I thought was a nice touch, and they were beautiful!
The children enjoyed the playground which was situated next to the donkeys, ducks, rabbits and guinea pigs, so very child friendly. This site is dog friendly also, though I do need to stress the staff needing to monitor peoples need to pick up the dog dirt after their pet.
They only major gripe I have on this site was the advertisement of level electric tent pitches. Though these are supplied to the front of the site, we were actually located to the 'one' electric hook-up point in the main, basic field at the back next to the last wigwam. That pitch was not level. We didn't make a fuss about it at the time, as we thought the ones at the front must have been fully booked all weekend, but by the end of our short stay, we realised they weren't. So that, I did find odd. So if you do want electric hook-up, on level ground with your tent, make sure you tell them you want the pitches at the front. We visited the local areas which were beautiful and also The Roman Army Museum which the kids really enjoyed.
It's located right next to Hadrian's Wall, so it's well worth a visit!
All in all, I would visit again, hopefully with an electric pitch situated at the front.

I have reviewed this site before as a large family group (4 adults, 9 children) and after a great experience last time, went back with 4 D of E teenagers in backpacking tents, and pleased to say that Herding Hill again was superb. Called up a few hours before we were going to arrive - Herding Hill is quiet this early in season, and we were not quite sure when we would arrive but Steve and Ann had left us keys to the showers/toilet block and also a fire pit with wood etc. The D of E kids absolutely loved the site and it is an excellent stop off Hadrian's wall.
As last time, the toilets / showers / full bathroom (with bath) were immaculately clean and the site well kept. We made use of the heated drying room but did not need any other facilities as backpacking with our own food and water. Had a chance to look at the site's new bunkbarn facility which will sleep 24 in two rooms of 12 with private facilities (opening in next few weeks). Also had a chat with them about bringing scouts for a night hike, they get lots of D of E and there is a small camping area to the right of the main reception which is near the warden's accommodation, and further from the main site/family areas. The owner used to be a cub leader so understands what is important and useful to those in scouting.
Fast becoming my favourite site in Northumberland - partly due to the excellent clean facilities, but mainly due to the care taken of the site and the friendliness/helpfulness of the owners.
Two other points worth a mention - for D of E /scouts is if you are approaching site on foot via the wooded walk from haltwhistle and up the steps, keep left in the first field, over the stile where the farm is, and keep left again in that field on the public right of way, then over the 'set in stone wall' - the farmer does not take that kindly to you walking down his private road. Also, there is a pub on the military road (go out of site, turn left and it is 10 mins tops - (watch out for fast cars / blind bends) but nice pub, with good outdoor area and locals friendly and welcoming.

Just returned from a lovely weekend at this relatively new site. Owner really friendly and happy to give advice on local area, walks, pubs, etc. This site has only been opened a couple of years and the owners are setting high standards for their site. We were on a hard standing fully serviced pitch which was a really good size. As stated previously, the washrooms are really good and the ladies included 2 baths which would be ideal for toddlers but also brilliant for teenagers as mine said. The site also has one of the best play areas I have seen on sites and would see this as being well used if you have younger children. The site also has a cafe adjacent to the play area which wasn't open for our stay but the owner confirmed would be open from Easter. The donkeys and alpacas are a nice touch.
There is a lovely walk (about 15 mins) into halt whistle through the burn and has several shops, supermarkets and pubs, cafes, etc.
Overall a lovely site, will definitely return and looking forward to see how site develops over the next few years

Just stayed at this site for a long weekend, as we stayed here when it was under construction a wanted to see the finished article. This is an immaculately clean site with plenty of space. Lovely shower blocks with plenty of hot water (no button to press). They also have Pods on site, there are also animals, donkeys, llamas, ducks, chickens etc and the owners were very helpful and friendly. £26 50 per night for van. They have a tea room but this was not open on our visit. Short walk into town, take my advice and walk up the hill to the military rd then left for 100 yards you will come to gate on left and this is a lovely little walk into haltwhistle. Enjoyed my stay, thanks

Our first time out with our motorhome.
Friendly staff keen to help answer questions from us newcomers.
Site is perfect for Hadrians Wall walks and visit to Haltwhistle town - which is named as the centre of Britain.
Do visit La Toot in Haltwhistle for coffee and cakes/meals.
Do book up early to avoid missing out on this site.
Worth considering is directions to site due to narrow uphill road from Haltwhistle especially with caravans.
Use B6318 from Greenhead from west.
Facilities on site great.

We are two adults with two large dogs. We hired a running water wigwam with the hot tub (we normally use our tent so this was quite a step-up!)
Location:- This is a great location, although after walking with dogs on one occasion along the road we decided to drive to car-parks and walk from there as the roads are typical country roads. The site was an excellent base for us to continue our exploration of Hadrians wall. This is a rural camp site and so you really feel as if you have left civilisation behind. There is very little light pollution but, unfortunately for us, too much cloud to enjoy the stars during our stay.
Wig-wam:- What a first foray into this world. It has opened up the possibilities of continuing camping throughout the year. It was basically the size of our tent (a Tigris 400) but it had a toilet, sink and a kettle. There was plenty of room for all of us and the dogs (a retriever and a collie/lurcher cross) had plenty of floor space to move around and sprall on. The beds were REALLY comfortable, even though we thought they looked hard they were memory foam mattress and we slept really well. The heater was great and we really appreciated it after getting very cold during the day.
Amenity Block:- WOW. Can we have more like this please on other sites! It was a pleasure to have a shower as there was none of the normal shivering waiting for the water to warm up, the shower heads were great and the water stayed the same temperature throughout (and none of those annoying buttons that only run for 1 min). The baths looked great although we didn't use. The block was clean and it's great to see a site that leaves you a mop and squidgee to wipe up after you. It meant the shower area always looked clean and tidy. The drying room was well used and worked a treat. The site had most of it's touring spots used whilst we were there but no tents - the facilities seemed to cope with the number of people.
Dog Friendly:- The site, and surrounding area, is dog friendly although visitors must remember there are working farms so the dogs need to be kept on lead even if they are well behaved. The little dog walk at the side of the site was perfect for the morning and evening stroll. We were off-site during the day so ours got plenty of walks at other times.
Pizza:- This is the only area I would like to complain. It was too nice! Brett and Rachel made the pizza and it was delivered on time to our wigwam (along with the coleslaw and proper chips) and oh my goodness me. How are we supposed to eat normal pizza or bought coleslaw again? Thanks for an amazing pizza.
Price:- It does seem a little expensive when you look at the prices but, having been there, the it is worth it. There are no limits on the hot showers, the hair dryer or the bath. The drying room is such a bonus and we would welcome that if we were in our tent (we would probably have used the sauna as well). We were looking for somewhere for the dogs and this site ticked our boxes.
Would we go again? YES - we are already discussing when we want to book a wigwam again and have recommended the site to our friends.

We are very new to caravan touring so we chose this location as it is a straight run along the A69 from home. Unfortunately the weather at this time was wet and windy and we decided on route to go the old Military Road to avoid the steep hill from Haltwhistle. Flooding and severe dips are not a good combination when towing a new outfit for the first time. Returning was much easier as we were advised to head home via Greenhead which takes you onto the A69 and a much flatter route. (There is an advisory note on the website)
We were welcomed immediately by the owners who could not have been more helpful in showing us to our pitch, and offered as much help as they could in the tropical monsoon conditions.
We prefer to use serviced pitches, good choice in the circumstances.
Without van the quicker road to Haltwhistle was taken and there plenty of places to see and eat.
This is an excellent location for scenic walking, our range is limited by our 3 Chihuahuas. The owner's daughter was as much interested in them as we were with the resident Alpacas.
We found the on site restaurant/bar very useful and dog friendly. I believe they have plans to alter/expand this area.
We certainly enjoyed our stay and will be going back.

Just returned from a last minute decision to visit this campsite after reading all the great reviews. All I can say OMG its lovely.
If you judge a campsite by the toilet facilities then you will think it is the best site in the world, totally spotless with underflooring heating and music playing 24 hours
You are given a number and that is your tent pitch, we liked that. Has a very nice cafe which sells pizza and beers. Has a mini farm with alpacas, chickens, ducks, rabbits. There is a very good play park for the kids which is very well laid out
I guarantee once you drive into this site you will be impressed with how clean it is and how well designed.
We only met the owner and he was every friendly. I can only say excellent things about this site. One other thing we can say about this site when we were there all the campers that were there were very very friendly.
Cant wait to come back thank you. Paul and lisa
