Stayed at Herding Hill Aug 03 to 05 2012. Booked by phone rather than website (although the facility looks straightforward) as we had two large tents which we wanted to pitch together, Phone booking which very easy/friendly. Arrived on site, and shown to pitch area. Mix of caravans/tents with electric on entry, plus some small camp spaces, then wooden yurts soem with hot-tubs (looked lovely) then the non - electric camp field which was well maintained and laid out.
Toilet/showers/bathing facilities in centre of of site along with sauna, and drying room, washing up facilities, bins/recycling and clearly marked drinking water/grey water taps. Toilet/shower/bath facilities were excellent, well lit, immaculately clean, and large with free hairdryer and state of the art hand-dryer. Most impressive was two full bathrooms with spotless bath and shower above (ladies - sorry can't comment on gents. Small drying room proved very useful as we had the worst storms ever.
The campsite allows open fires in a fire pit - hire cost £10 but includes kindling bag, logs and firelighters. Lovely shop and takeaway and eat in facility, which does pizza etc. Delivered to your tent. At the top of the site there is a wooden fort and play area which is safe and well maintained, and the children loved seeing the animals on site - alpacas and the hens.
We had the most awful weather thunderstorms and 5 hours of constant rain that closed the A69) but due to the great facilities, this wasn't a problem. We met owner who came down to chat with us while we were putting tents up very friendly - and gave us some tips on where to walk, how to get into Halwhistle avoiding the steep road etc. Also met his wife and all other staff in the shop/pizza/restaurant lovely and helpful.
In respect of location, it is 15 min walk to Hadrian's wall, and 15 mins down to Halwhistle (probably 5 mins by car), but the road is windy, quite a steep climb up from haltwhistle has no pavements - but it is also on the bus route apparently - there is an alternative (and nicer route) via the burn. Other campers were mainly friendly families. I can't give this site a high enough rating. Thank you all for a great weekend.

Stayed here on a bank hol weekend which I usually try and avoid but wanted a few days stop on the way home after a week in northumberland. Arrived just myself and the kids and the owner was more than helpful, siting the caravan for me, nothing was too much trouble.
We were on the overflow at the front of the site next to the road which meant a 2-3 min walk to the loos but was no problem and was actually more sheltered from the wind and the noise from other campers over the weekend, there was very little road noise overnight too. It was also very handy for stargazing :-)
The toilet block is lovely, underfloor heating should be compulsory in all toilet blocks, good showers, nice baths, nice to have the radio on in the loo's too, the playground was an instant hit with my younger kids, as were the animals and the shop.
We didn't have pizza or use the tea room but it looked good and was always people in and I believe they do breakfasts from 9 - 11am. The reception has 2 lovely settees in and some folders with walks along hadrians wall for you to look at. Was ample parking at the entrance and the owners were always friendly, as were their children.
I would stay again, at a less busy time and opt for a hardstanding pitch. Its worth noting the instructions on the website if towing a caravan, not to approach the site from Haltwhistle as the bank is very steep with a few sharp bends most unsuitable for a caravan. Haltwhistle itself has the usual takeaways and the co-op though we found Sainsbury's by accident which proved better value for money than the co-op, we didn't try any of the pubs in town.
The site is very handy for exploring the wall, we went to some of the forts as they had activities on for the kids and carlisle is only about 20 miles away, Chesters Roman Fort is well worth a visit too.
All in all a lovely site, first class facilities, with very welcoming and helpful owners which you can not put a price on.

Stayed in an en-suite wigwam, it was absolutely brilliant, it has a toilet, sink, kitchen sink, fridge, microwave and crockery can be hired for £2. 50 per day.
We hired a hot tub and it was delightful even in the rain!
The facilities are superb with clean, well maintained showers and even baths, there is also a family bathroom.
The mini farm and play park for kids is also excellent.
I would highly recommend this site, the owners are very friendly and it's in a good location.

A lovely site very close to Harians Wall.
Newly built and excellent facilities - a lot of thought has clearly gone in to the facilities which are excellent. I was only disappointed that I didn't get a chance to try the sauna.
Great on site cafe too - turning out really excellent pizza that they will even deliver to your pitch!
Lots of competition in the area - this site is definitely recommend for long or short stays and close to a great part of the wall too.

Just home from a great week at this site
I should tell you its terrible so we can go back any time we want but! This is what modern camping is all about. This site has it all. Toilet block is fantastic (underfloor heating) baths etc.
Great playground for kids, If you want to camp basic or go for the new Glamping this site ticks all the boxes. Wigwams looked really good.
Only mins from both Hadrians wall and Haltwhistle and with an on site restaurant / bar this site gets 10/10 from us
First couple of days had very heavy downpours of rain and site coped very well with good drainage.
We usually use only Caravan club sites so this was a great find for us with the location and facilities. Owners and wardens were very helpful and friendly.

Our party of seasoned Glampers have just returned from the Bank Hol weekend at this site. The staff at the site were very friendly on arrival. There was some confusion over the pitch numbers we are a party of 4 families which was resolved in a fashion.
The owners are certainly getting their monies worth as the pitches are very close together & the maximum have been squashed in some on a steep grassed area which is disappointing as it is not a cheap site also it is stated in the booking conditions units to be a minimum of 3 meters apart which on our weekend they were not.
Like other reviewers I agree the park & animals a hit with our young children also the toilet block music made a change. However there was no shelving in the showers/bath cubicles only hooks on the doors so when bathing two small children was a juggling challenge! Also there are only 3 showers 2 baths & 3 toilets in the ladies not many for the size of the site. I would suggest to the campsite that they add more with storage/shelves & also do away with the mops & signs requesting to clean the shower areas after use as you can imaging the colour of the mops/water the germs that would be breading hence non of our party did so.
Better rubbish facilities needed as every day the bins were full and there was no recycling bins.
We did not try the food as it seemed expensive £2. 95 for beans on toast £3 for eggs on toast, this weekend there was a hog roast & acoustic guitarist as it was the owners 40th however again expensive £8 per adult & £5 per child.
You can hire fire pits at £8 per night & if you bring your own you have to use their fuel at £8 per bag wi-fi is available at a charge but free if you sit in the tea room!
The local pubs & restaurants had more to offer for value for money. The location is the asset to this site overall ok site but would not return.

Management response: There was a little confusion when this party arrived as we were unaware that they were 4 large families together, as we state quite clearly on our website that we do not take groups although we did agree to accommodate them with a reminder that we are a family site and do not accept noise after 11pm
Our pitches are 6m diameter and this is clearly stated on our website. We can accommodate larger tents by prior arrangement. The parties were advised to pitch their tents with the pitch number markers to the middle of each tent as this ensures that there is the required 3 metres between each unit. Three of the tents were larger than 6m and they chose to ignore this advice and pitch their tents closer together, even joining them together with windbreaks. The advice is given for a very good reason to ensure safety in the event of a fire. This group had booked the premier tent pitches which include electric hookup and are completely level. We do offer a cheaper rate for the non-electric tent pitches as they are on a slight slope which is made clear at the time of booking.
We are adding to our amenity building constantly and will no doubt add shelving and more hooks etc. But we only opened the brand new building at Easter and have undoubtedly achieved a great deal in this time. Most campsites do not offer baths with unlimited free hot water to assist families travelling with young children and it is a shame that was not received more favorably by these guests. We have welcomed thousands of visitors through our site this season and everyone seems to have managed with the number of showers and toilets provided. We can only assume that this group wanted to use the facilities all at the same time! We also have an accessible/family bathroom where mum, dad and children can use the room together to help with bathing babies and very small children. The mops are rinsed through with bleach and the water changed every day and it is standard practice to ask visitors to mop & squeegee cubicles after they have used them in order to respect other guests.
We pay a local recycling company to take all our waste to a central processing plant where it is sorted and recycled. As a result of this we are now having signs installed to let guests know about this, as recycling is key to our eco credentials.
The food in our tearoom is freshly prepared using the best local produce and is always well received. The entertainment we provided on Saturday evening was a huge success. Our local butcher prepared a beautiful hog roast and we added salads and homemade coleslaw. We booked a local singer and guitarist to play songs old and new and charged £8 for adults and £5 for children which we believe was excellent value for money for a full evenings food and entertainment.
We are 1 of only 2 campsites in Northumberland who allow firepits on site. We do not allow people to bring their own or use their own firewood which allows us to monitor who has fires and ensure that they are used safely and the actual charge is £10 for the hire which includes logs etc and extra bags can be bought at £4. 50. We have installed a site wide wifi system which covers our entire 5 acre field and it standard practice to offer complementary usage to customers eating or drinking in the tearoom.
We are sorry to read such a critical review given that we have had recent positive reviews. |

Reception was perfect, even without reservation,
Reservation might be necessary in the future, because the place might make a great career
Thank you for receiving us at this marvellous site

We visited this campsite last weekend and it was our first camping experience. The campsite is great, everything is very new, fantastic changing block with showers and baths and a sauna to hire.
The campsite offers food, lovely pizzas and lots of other meals, plus alcohol!
Only downside is its quite high up and therefore exposed, on the plus side its very close to all the Hadrian Wall sites.
Would definitely go back!

Herding Hill is a fantastic campsite that provides modern, clean and well thought out facilities - some of the best we have seen.
The owners and staff extend a warm and helpful welcome, taking time to add that 'personal touch' to your stay. We really enjoyed the two meals we had in the tea room - service and quality of food excellent.
Great location, easy access to great walks and proximity to Roman Wall and Forts is brilliant. Didn't have time to go into Haltwhistle, but we will definitely be visiting Herding Hill again to explore further.
Thank you for your hospitality and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

We stayed on this site for two nights.
The wardens were very helpful and escorted us to our hardstanding pitch. The site is very well maintained.
The showerblock was the best we have encountered on our travels. Even having bathrooms! It was spotless, and had pleasant background music.
The location is excellent for visiting Hadrian's wall, Vindalanda, the Roman Army museum and Housesteads. A lovely and interesting part of the country.
The children's playground looked fantastic with a wooden fort and pirate ship etc. There are also Alpacas, ducks and hens in a special pen.
Reception includes a small shop, and although we did not use the on site cafe which is open 10-4, it did look very nice.
We would definitely stay here again if we were in the area.
