All in all a wonderful campsite.
We had a premier tent pitch for a weekend of mixed weather in July. On arrival the staff were very friendly, showed us to our pitch which they swapped to be more suitable for our tent without a problem.
The facilities are fantastic, and put other campsites to shame. Immaculate at all times, day and evening. The ladies has 3 toilets, 3 shower cubicles and 2 bathrooms with additional toilets. Underfloor heating, free hairdryer and background music. Plus the facility to be able to clear up after yourself if needed with a mop/cloth. Also Sauna available at an additional cost.
Playground also looked brand new, wonderful fort and pirate ship and swings, our 2 preschool aged children had lots of fun. Field of Alpacas, chickens, ducks and rabbits right next to the playground also.
Pizza service available on certain nights from the tearooms.
We explored Hadrians wall and the nearby gorge and all in all had a lovely weekend.
Will be returning and recommending this GEM of a campsite!

We were looking for a site with good facilities, which allows campfires, in Northumbria, and this perfectly fitted the bill. As others have said, the facilities are extremely high quality, very clean and warm.
We were there over a fairly chilly couple of nights, the second night rainy and windy, and I would have very much liked to have slept in the facilities block for its underfloor heating!
It was very quiet when we were there. We were the only tent, with just a couple of tourers and a couple of the wigwams occupied. For camping in tents, it didn't seem to have the atmosphere that some sites have, although that might have just been because it was so quiet.
It is a beautiful, but very exposed setting, and the wind whipped down the hill from Hadrian's Wall, which you can actually see from the site.
The children's play area is lovely. And the alpacas are very sweet.
The site is sloping. We had a pitch at the top, next to the wigwams, which was flat, but if it was busier you might find yourself on a bit of a slope.
Managers extremely friendly and accommodating, allowing me to buy 'emergency' marshmallows after the shop was shut.
Great location for visiting Hadrian's Wall. Vindolanda, just a few minutes away, is a fascinating place to visit, with a live archaeological dig going on which my son found fascinating.

Excellent stay, owners and staff were really welcoming, and we had a great stay despite the weather. Very well situated for the hadrians wall. Was only a short walk to an excellent pub for evening meals, wish we could have stayed longer.
Great facilities, and lovely that enviro friendly approach has presided successfully over the design. We have camped a lot, but these were truly A++ class and very welcome given the summer weather we have had.
Brill breakfast really set us up for a days cycling, and thehoods are ace, you have to stay in them! Thank you very much for a lovely break.

We have just returned after spending 3 nights at Herding Hill Farm. I was going to book another site just off the M6 but after further searching found this one. I am so glad I did.
This site is everything the owners said it was and more. For a small site it packs in so much more than many larger sites. The brand new amenities block is brilliant. Free showers and 2 full bathrooms in the ladies section. A small sauna which carries a charge. You'll never be cold in this shower block which is solar powered and has under floor heating.
The reception hosts a small lounge and shop and a tea room which is open to campers and passers by alike. The site is beautifully kept by the owners and their site wardens. For the children there is a brilliant fort and swings.
They now have 3 Alpacas and for a charge you can have an alpaca experience (taking them for walks!) They also have small animals and children's birthday parties can be arranged.
The cafe offers cooked breakfasts and if the demand is there meals can be provided on Saturday evening (They are also licensed to sell beer and wine!).
The piece de resistance for me are the wigwam cabins. I would love to have stayed in one of these. Some even have their own hot tubs which are charged for separately. My son in law doesn't know this yet but I have booked him a 2 night stay in one of these cabins for his 50th birthday present. My daughter can't wait.
This site is everything I expected it to be and more besides. I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see it gaining awards from different organisations and they will be well and truly deserved. I for one will definitely be returning and am telling everyone who will listen how good this site is.

This is a lovely small site with superb facilities. Shame access to family bathroom and laundry room is limited by there only being one key. When we said so to the owners, they didn't seem to think it was a problem as the family facility is not often used but I suggested they might raise awareness of it as it is fantastic. That said, the sauna and baths (with plugs!) in the washrooms are very welcome.
The playpark is wonderful and was well used despite poor weather. My suggestions to the owners for improvements would be better hooks/shelves in the shower cubicles and somewhere to sit.
Also to have more keys for the locked facilities which could be logged in and out with a deposit paid. Better information about this on arrival would be great.

This was our fifth visit to Herding Hill Farm. The first being in April 2011, opening weekend. We have watched the site grow and blossom into one of extreme quality, offering the friendliest of welcomes, super amenity block, wonderful tea room, all in an area of outstanding beauty.
Steve and Anne have delivered everything they wished to in order to provide visitors with an exceptional site and therefore memorable stay.
No expense spared in the shower block, lovely clean and spacious shower cubicles, toilets and bathrooms. Great drying room and laundry room within the block and also a sauna. Fantastic!
We love the new play area, a fort, fitting for the little 'romans' who love to roam the area. Within a year they have accomplished so much and again this will not be the first nor the last visit this year.
Thank you for a great weekend. The ensuite wigwam a delight and the hot tub, idyllic bliss.

This was our first trip in our new (to us) motorhome. A family of 4, kids aged 9 & 10. The site is very well placed for Hadrians Wall, leisurely kid walking pace about 15 mins, just past the Milecastle PH. We ate at the pub on friday PM and the food was superb, if a little pricey.
The site was very well laid out, everything is brand new and the shower block was excellent. Loads for the kids to do - large play area, many animals and safe for kids on bikes.
Steve and Ann were very welcoming and extremely helpful despite their very busy schedule. As stated this was our first, very short notice trip and steve was on hand to guide us through it, including the loan of a heater when the temperature plunged below freezing. We made good use of the bus service AD122, which stops at the site gate and takes you to all the local Roman sites, and onto Carlisle and Hexham.
The food and licensed tea room, were lovely and we managed to catch the FA Cup final on the big TV sited in the lounge next to the shop.
All in all a lovely site and very friendly, hard working owners. We will definitely visit again and can't wait to see the site develop/mature.

What a difference, first went in feb, a lot of work to be done, then just came back, fab. Lovely underfloor heated toilet block, great play ground, spacious pitches. Had a meal plus drinks in cafe. Lovely friendly owners. Just booked to go back in June, hopefully try the sauna out. Great walks along hadrians wall. There is a steep hill and narrow road to come up if you come of the A69 but ok if you have a 4x4. Had a meal in the mile castle pub at the bottom of the lane, really nice, hubby enjoyed the real ale, nice friendly pub

This was a first visit to this cracking little site. The new toilet block (with sauna) is probably the best I have ever seen on a site !
We did not have children with us but there is a brilliant play park and lots of small animals to entertain. There is a shop and cafe on site which is going to open in the evenings with great variety of drink and food. We walked along Hadrians wall on the Sunday and then came back to the site for the first of the seasons Sunday Roast ! Yummy ! The owners were great and had although not been there long put a lot of time and effort into making this a definite return to site ! One slight problem is some of the tent sites are sloped which might not be suitable for some !

We wanted to do a bit walking on hadrians wall and this site is in a perfect location for this, , you can either drive to any point you like or also just walk up the road past the pub on the military roed (no dogs allowed in this one)this site is a work in progress but when it is finished next month it will be excellent which will tick all the boxes for just about everybody (see owners website for this though) as I said we were there to walk 10/10, for dog owners there is a brilliant little walk down the farm to halwhistle (way back is harder by road) or taxi where you can enjoy a pint in a couple of doggy friendly pubs eg black bull or railway inn. We were impressed with this site and it can only get better, the owners Steve and Anne were very friendly, so were the chickens and ducks, they also have alpacers on site, guinea pigs and rabbits etc for the children. Also a nice play park. They're also going to get a fishing lake. So this site is for Walking dog lovers who like a pint or two, families, young couples, , well just about anybody. Will be going back
